First-class third-party completion package activation, following the script activation pattern shipped in #14. Design contract: docs/specs/2026-10-29-completion-activation-design.md.
Registry spec gains a nu-completion activation kind with declared targets: targets: [{command, path, kind}], where kind is "static" or "command-backed" (declared, never inferred). validate_completion_targets() mirrors script validation: non-empty, command-name grammar, Nu reserved keywords rejected, duplicate commands/paths rejected, safe package-relative .nu paths only.
Install persists completion_targets in the lockfile and never executes package code. A nu-completion kind on a non-completion package type is rejected at install.
Activation renders each target into the managed numan.nu autoload file as a # numan:completion <owner/name> <command> marker plus use "<abs path>" *, sorted by scoped ID then command, through the existing candidate-validation, journal, drift, and recovery machinery. Ground truth is a per-package completion_activation lockfile record with the same Nu-identity fields as script_activation.
Target ownership is exclusive across active completion packages: a command already owned by a different active completion package rejects activation instead of silently shadowing it.
numan info shows declared targets and kinds before activation, and for command-backed targets states that the provider can execute code during completion (only when Nushell requests one, never at install or activation).
Mirrored everywhere script_activation is consulted: deactivate, init --refresh re-resolution/regeneration, remove, update, doctor (new activation.completion_stale finding), activation switch, autoload recovery/state, and the TUI.
README support table now lists completion packages as Supported via numan activate, and the stale post-First-class script package activation and lifecycle #14 Script row is fixed in the same pass. CHANGELOG entry distinguishes completion packages from numan completions <shell> (Numan's own generator).
Real-Nu acceptance (ignored test, run explicitly against Nu 0.116.1): a fresh session loading the managed file has the fixture extern defined with its positional bound to the declared completer; after deactivation it is gone; user config untouched. Nu exposes no non-interactive completion querying, so the test proves this honest equivalent and says so in its comments.
New fixture suite tests/completion_activation_test.rs: validation, rendering + lockfile record, already-active skip, cross-package conflict rejection, traversal/missing-target rejection, deactivation removing only that package's lines.
Notes
Deviations from a blanket mirror of the script rules, both commented in code: numan try keeps completions install-only only when they declare no targets (a completion with declared targets activates normally), and numan list reports completion packages as "installed" like modules/scripts (per-Nu state is on activate --list).
Follow-up, separate from this PR: the 15 completion packages in the live registry still declare no activation targets, so they cannot activate until numan-registry adds their declarations.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Completion packages with declared targets can now be activated and deactivated alongside other Nushell packages. Activated targets are loaded in Nushell, and deactivation removes only that package’s contribution.
numan info shows declared completion targets and notes when a provider may run during completion requests.
Safeguards
Installation and activation do not run completion providers. Conflicting command ownership and invalid targets are rejected.
Active completion packages must be deactivated before they can be updated or removed.
Documentation
Updated the README and changelog with completion package support and activation details.

Walkthrough
This change adds activation for Nushell completion packages with declared targets. Numan validates and stores those targets, writes them to managed autoload content, and tracks activation through deactivation, refresh, recovery, and package-management commands.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review be7e0
Completion activation works in the core path, but the Windows test job currently fails and registry packages cannot yet declare targets. Activation through try and the TUI does not warn that command-backed providers can run code, and doctor does not surface or repair stale completions. Resolve these before merging, or explicitly accept them as follow-ups.

Explanation
The changed files are mirrors of module and script activation handling, so they serve the #15 requirement that completion activation follow the same journal, drift, recovery, and ownership discipline. Each change maps to a listed requirement:
Deactivate, remove, update, init --refresh, doctor, activation switch, autoload state and recovery, and TUI: the same activation paths that handle modules and scripts.
info: target display and command-backed execution disclosure (#15 UX requirement).
try and list: the deviations are documented in code comments and the PR description. Each is limited to completion packages.
Lockfile fixture initializers in many test files: required by the new LockfileEntry fields.
README, CHANGELOG, and the design spec: documentation for the new activation kind (#15 documentation requirement). The README stale Script row fix is in the same documentation table.
No change was found that is unrelated to #15 or that alters behavior for modules or scripts beyond the completion extension. This assessment relies on the PR summary and the visible test file. It did not read every changed hunk.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Implementation evidence supports most of #15 coding requirements at head be7e01a. Evidence shown:
Explicit declared targets (command, package-relative path, kind = static or command-backed) and validate_completion_targets (src/core/package.rs, per PR summary and tests/completion_activation_test.rs).
Install persists completion_targets without executing package code (src/install/transaction.rs).
Activation renders # numan:completion <owner/name> <command> markers and use "<abs path>" * into the managed numan.nu file, with a per-package completion_activation lockfile record (src/nu/autoload.rs, src/state/lockfile.rs).
Cross-package command ownership conflicts are rejected. The test activation_rejects_cross_package_target_conflict covers this.
Deactivation removes only the target package's lines. The test deactivation_removes_only_that_packages_lines covers this.
Traversal and missing-target rejection at activation time. The test activation_rejects_missing_target_and_traversal_declaration covers this.
Real-Nu acceptance test exists as an ignored test. It was run per the PR description.
Unresolved: Issue #15 acceptance criteria require fixture coverage for interrupted activation and updates. The PR description does not report tests for either. The visible portion of tests/completion_activation_test.rs (first 16000 bytes) has no interrupted-activation or update test. The remainder of that file was truncated, so its contents are unknown. Recovery code (src/state/autoload_recovery.rs) and update refusal (src/cmd/update.rs) were changed, and a refusal test for update is reported. No evidence shows a test that verifies recovery after an interrupted activation or update behavior for completion records. The numan inspect requirement maps to numan info in this repository. This is a naming difference only. Schema documentation of unsupported forms is documentation and is not assessed as a coding requirement.
Resolution
Provide evidence of automated tests that cover (a) recovery of completion activation after an interrupted or replaced activation transaction, and (b) update behavior for completion packages with and without an active completion record. Cite the test names and file paths. If no such tests exist, add them to tests/completion_activation_test.rs or the recovery test module.

Review Summary
This PR implements first-class completion package activation (nu-completion kind) following the same pattern as script activation (#14). The implementation is comprehensive and well-tested, covering the full lifecycle: install validation, activation, deactivation, drift detection, recovery, doctor findings, init --refresh, and TUI.
Critical Finding
Consent table omits completion (and script) targets — see the inline comment on src/cmd/activate.rs. The print_grouped_consent_table function signature only accepts plugins and modules, so any user activating a completion or script package via the CLI path sees a blank consent display even though numan.nu is about to be modified. This is a concrete behavioral gap between what the user is shown and what the tool does. Updating the function to accept and display script/completion targets would fix it.
Other Observations
The install validation (transaction.rs) correctly validates nu-completion targets before promoting the payload, following the same pattern as scripts.
The ownership-exclusive collision check for completion targets mirrors the script collision detection faithfully.
The 13-step autoload journal transaction is correctly extended for completions.
Partial deactivation (run_partial_deactivation) correctly re-resolves completion targets from stored paths, mirroring the script branch.
is_full_module_deactivation correctly includes active completion packages in its accounting.
clear_module_activations correctly clears completion_activation alongside the other activation records.
The AutoloadState::active_autoload_ids_from_lockfile correctly includes active completion packages.
The generate_candidate_id collision-avoidance is reasonable (timestamp + PID + counter).

Base the Discover install-only note on the selected version.
For a completion package with declared targets, this call still adds a note saying the package declares no targets and cannot be activated. The new completion activation support makes that note false. Check the selected version’s nu-completion targets before adding the note; a package-level check alone can mislabel a pinned version without targets.

Automated review — implementation is thorough and mirrors the script-activation machinery correctly; two gaps found, both around repair/test wiring.
Inline findings
src/cmd/doctor.rs:1048-1064 — important · activation.completion_stale is never dispatched by numan doctor --fix (needs_activate list omits it).
docs/specs/2026-10-29-completion-activation-design.md:57-60 — suggestion · acceptance promises recovery/update fixture coverage that the new test suite does not provide; the new recovery branch is untested.
Out of diff
src/cmd/search.rs:214-222 — suggestion · numan search still labels Completion (and Script) rows [install-only; activation deferred], contradicting the new README/CHANGELOG support claims.
src/tui/app.rs:232 — suggestion · the catalog detail pane uses the type-only install_only_note, so a completion package that declares targets is still told it "declares no targets"; it should use install_only_note_for_package.
docs/numan-doctor.md:97,165 and README.md:371 — suggestion · the new doctor finding is absent from the findings/repair tables, and the numan deactivate row still says "Remove module autoload entries" although it now removes script/completion contributions too.
Consent table now lists script and completion targets; try and the TUI disclose command-backed completion targets before activation; doctor reports and repairs activation.completion_stale and activation.script_stale; install --force refuses to clear an active autoload record; init --refresh validates a copy of the managed file instead of the live file; Discover uses the package-aware install-only note. Tests: real-Nu test resolves nu through PATH (CI runs it without NU_BINARY) and the Windows managed-path assertion matches production formatting; new coverage for refresh with an active completion, execute-level remove, activation switch round-trip, interrupted-deactivation recovery, and try activation. README wording corrected in three places; the design spec gains the registry-schema dependency note.
The Deny check fails on master as well: the advisory was published after master's last CI run and the PR changes no dependencies. libz-sys 1.1.31 stops the build script logging the build environment. cargo deny check is fully green with this bump.
Reviewed the delta since the previous review (be7e01ac..0332e69). The follow-up fixes are sound and address the earlier consent-table, doctor, TUI, and CI findings; three gaps remain.
Fixed the three unresolved review threads; each thread was replied to and resolved.
Fixed
src/install/transaction.rs:186-195 — the reinstall guard now treats a missing payload directory as a replacement, so a same-version non-force reinstall with a deleted payload is refused instead of orphaning the managed numan.nu lines. Extended integration_force_reinstall_refuses_active_completion (tests/install_test.rs) to cover the missing-payload case and record survival.
tests/completion_activation_test.rs:791 — added recovery_rebuilds_completion_record_from_replaced_activate_journal, exercising the Replaced/Activate rebuild branch in apply_replaced_transition (record rebuilt, autoload-state recreated, journal cleared).
src/cmd/activate.rs:2086-2104 — the completion consent section now prints package command -> path [kind] and includes the command-backed execution note, matching info, try, and the TUI.
Not fixed (resolved as not valid)
None.
Addressed non-thread feedback
None beyond the above.
CI
No failing checks on the previous head; the new push will restart checks. Local verification: cargo test --test completion_activation_test, --test install_test, --test activate_test, --test script_activation_test, --test init_test all pass; cargo clippy -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --check clean.
