ci: skip changeset check on the changesets release PR - #922
Conversation
The release PR opened by changesets/action deletes every .changeset/*.md and bumps package.json + CHANGELOG.md across packages/framework, packages/blocks and friends. That makes changed-packages report requires_changeset=true, while check-changeset looks for an ADDED changeset and finds none, so the job fails on every release PR. Exempt it by head branch (changeset-release/*), the prefix changesets/action owns, alongside the existing renovate[bot] exemption.

workflow to require github.event.pull_request.head.repo.full_name to equal
github.repository while retaining the existing changeset-release/ prefix check,
so fork branches cannot bypass .github/actions/check-changeset.

head.ref is contributor-controlled on fork PRs, so a fork branch named changeset-release/anything would have skipped check-changeset. Pair the prefix match with head.repo.full_name == github.repository, which only the branch changesets/action pushes can satisfy.

Problem
The changesets release PR (#864, "Version Packages") fails
check-changeset:That PR deletes every
.changeset/*.mdand bumpspackage.json+CHANGELOG.mdacrosspackages/framework,packages/blocks, etc. So:changed-packagessees the diff touchpackages/(framework|integrations|modules|blocks)/and setsrequires_changeset=truecheck-changesetthen looks for an added.changeset/*.md(--diff-filter=A) and finds none — the release PR consumes changesets, it doesn't add themThe job's
ifonly ever exemptedrenovate[bot](which gets a changeset generated for it bycreate-renovate-changeset). The release PR was never exempted, so it fails on every release cycle.Fix
Add a head-branch exemption to
check-changeset:!startsWith(github.event.pull_request.head.ref, 'changeset-release/')Matching on the branch prefix rather than
github-actions[bot]ties the exemption to the actual mechanism —changeset-release/is the branchchangesets/actionowns — instead of blanket-exempting anything opened with the default token.A skipped job counts as success for required status checks, same as
create-renovate-changesetalready does on renovate PRs.Unblocking #864
Re-running the failed job won't help — it replays a merge ref that predates this change. Once this lands on
main, the push triggersrelease.yaml, which updates thechangeset-release/mainbranch, firingsynchronizeon #864 so the checks re-run with the exemption in place.Summary by CodeRabbit
