Closes #63

Summary of Changes

This PR implements full rootless Podman container engine support in packages/run-spaceapp while preserving 100% backward compatibility for Docker installations.

Acceptance Criteria Checklist

  • Engine selection: Added --engine docker|podman on install, reinstall, and unattended --answers (answers.engine). Persisted in launcher configuration (config.json) and used across all commands. Preserves Docker default; auto-selects or prompts Podman when Docker is absent and Podman is operational. Reject engine mismatch on existing installs.
  • Compose provider: Uses podman compose (supports Podman >= 5 with compose provider e.g. docker-compose-v2 or podman-compose) and maintains all template capabilities: profiles, file secrets, health conditions, init, memory/cpu constraints, shared socket volumes, --wait, and non-root execution (--user 10001:10001).
  • Linux rootless (Podman >= 5, cgroup v2): Lifecycle commands (install, up, status, logs, down, update with checkpoint, rollback, backup, restore, doctor, doctor --fix, provider install opencode, uninstall, and uninstall --purge-data) work across small, medium, and large profiles. Endpoint verified at http://127.0.0.1:4911/readyz.
  • SELinux bind mounts: Workspace mounts registered with workspace add (both read-write and --read-only) automatically append bind: { selinux: "z" } for Podman with correct host ownership.
  • macOS Podman Machine: Validates active machine resources (CPU, RAM, disk) against PROFILE_REQUIREMENTS[profile] and provides exact podman machine set resize guidance when insufficient.
  • Diagnostics & Support Bundle: doctor reports engine version, rootless status (.host.security.rootless), cgroup version (.host.cgroupVersion), and controller delegation (.host.cgroupControllers). Warns when delegation is absent. Output capture uses real Writable streams for robust process capture. support-bundle exports diagnostics without leaking credentials or secrets.
  • Data safety & Engine switches: Engine switching on existing installations is rejected upfront before approval or setup continuation, preventing volume divergence. Directs user to explicit backup/restore migration instructions.
  • Host-root guardrail: --access host-root is strictly refused on Podman with Host-root access is not supported on Podman..
  • Unit tests: 23 dedicated tests in packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs cover command generation, profiles, SELinux labelling, provider install, recovery, offline pulls (--local-images), engine validation, and Writable stream capture. All existing Docker tests pass unchanged.
  • CI Platform Matrix: Added rootless Podman job in .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml running install --engine podman --non-interactive, waiting for /readyz, testing doctor and provider install, performing backup, running uninstall --purge-data, and verifying no residual containers or volumes remain via test -z "$(podman ps -aq)" and test -z "$(podman volume ls -q)".
  • Documentation: Updated packages/run-spaceapp/README.md, root README.md, and docs/getting-started.md with complete Podman prerequisites, limits, and setup instructions.

Podman support is broadly in place. One bounded gap remains: reinstall --engine=podman on a Docker install reinstalls Docker instead of refusing the switch, though data is preserved. The CI cleanup check can also miss a failure to list volumes. Both are small fixes and reasonable to complete before or shortly after merge.

Reject engine changes supplied through answers.engine.

On an existing Docker installation, --answers can set engine to podman, but hasRequestedConfigChange(rawExisting, parsed) and the existing-install return path use parsed.requestedEngine. They ignore the answer. A same-version run can therefore repair Docker without refusing the requested switch. Check the resolved requestedEngine against the saved engine before entering the existing-install branches.

Apply --local-images to Podman Compose commands.

When a user selects Podman and --local-images, this wrapper skips pulls only for docker. The Podman install still runs the staged pull command and can fail offline despite locally available images. Apply the offline behavior to Podman with arguments supported by its Compose provider.

Reject or implement reinstall --engine before approval.

The help advertises --engine, but the dispatch only handles --purge-data and passes the stored config.engine to reinstallCommand. On a Docker installation, reinstall --engine podman therefore prompts for approval and runs Docker. It is neither rejected nor honored.

Validate the engine option against config.engine before approval and reject mismatches. Otherwise, remove --engine from the reinstall help.

🟡 Minor · Capture engine info into a real Writable. · cli.mjs:2415-2419

packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs:2415-2419
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Capture engine info into a real Writable.

executeCommand starts a pipe when stdout.fd is not numeric, then calls child.stdout.pipe(stdout). The Podman and Docker info calls pass objects that only implement write, so the pipe throws before capture completes. The support bundle records the engine as unavailable, and doctor skips the Podman detail checks.

Suggested fix
 import { once } from "node:events";
+import { Writable } from "node:stream";
-        stdout: { write: (c) => { rawJson += c; } },
+        stdout: new Writable({
+          write(chunk, _encoding, callback) {
+            rawJson += chunk;
+            callback();
+          }
+        }),

Apply the same Writable capture to the Docker info call and the Podman info call in doctor.

Assert that --local-images skips the pull command.

The executor returns success for every command. If the launcher executes a separate Compose pull, this test still passes because it checks only the up arguments. Assert that executedSpecs contains no Compose pull command. This protects the offline behavior named by the test.

🟡 Minor · Reject the --engine=VALUE form during reinstall. · cli.mjs:565-566

packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs:565-566
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject the --engine=VALUE form during reinstall.

With a saved Docker installation, reinstall --engine=podman bypasses the engine-switch check. It prompts for approval, then recreates the Docker runtime. The flow preserves data and credentials, so this is a minor issue, not a major one.

Parse both engine-flag forms consistently with parseInstallArgs, then compare the requested engine with the saved engine before reinstalling.
