fix(analysis): Join Field matches a text key with an integer key written out in full - #1186
Join Field now joins a Text key with an Integer key, the most common Census join: the CSV reader types the Gazetteer's GEOID (47157000100) as an integer, while the TIGER/Line tract shapefile stores it as text, and Join Field refused the pair with key field type mismatch.
This is option 1 from the issue, plus the clearer message from option 3:
Text against Integer: each whole number is written out in full and compared with the text exactly. Nothing is trimmed or parsed, so leading zeros stay meaningful ("01001" does not match 1001), and "+42", " 42" or "42.0" don't match 42.
Records that miss only by leading zeros are reported. A record left unmatched whose key equals a key in the other table once leading zeros are dropped (a county FIPS stored as the number 1001 against the text "01001"), either way round, is counted, and Join Field adds one warning with the count and the first pair: Warning: 2 record(s) left unmatched because one key has leading zeros the other lacks (first: target key 1001, source key "01001"); .... The counts are on JoinFieldReport (leading_zero_mismatches, leading_zero_example).
Other incompatible pairs (Text against Double or Boolean, and so on) keep the refusal. The message now names the way out: convert one key with Add Field and Calculate Field.
No new parameter, dependency, or command id/parameter change. The comparison mode is crate-private. validate_key_compatibility is removed: Join Field calls the comparison directly and nothing else in the workspace used it (rustgis-analysis isn't published).
The user guide's Join Field section describes the new behaviour: codes join when they match as written, and a lost zero leaves the record unmatched with the warning.
Touches crates/analysis (attribute_join.rs; tools.rs, which adds the warning to the tool's messages and changes one existing test that used the Text/Integer pair as its example of a refused pair, now Text/Boolean) and docs/user-guide/analysis.md.
For your review
Double keys stay refused against text. A spreadsheet can type an id column as Double, and the join already treats 10.0 and 10 as the same key, so extending this to whole-number Doubles is a small change if you want it. I left it out to keep the change to what the issue describes.
The comparison follows the values. In the Text/Integer mode a whole number on either side is compared as its text, including a whole Float held in an Integer column (SQLite-backed sources can hold one). The alternative is to normalise by each side's declared type; I chose the simpler rule, which is documented on KeyComparison.
The message keeps Long. The issue mentions the message naming the type Long rather than Integer. That's FieldType::label(), which the Add Field dialog, the attribute table and layer.fields also show, so I kept it to match what users see in Add Field.
Once #1165 lands, its nightly test can drop the Add Field/Calculate Field workaround and serve as a further regression test.
Testing
cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, tests, layers), cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web and pre-commit run --all-files pass.
Unit tests in attribute_join.rs: every pair of key types; whole numbers across all magnitudes including i64::MIN/MAX, each also checked against 0n, +n, n, n and n.0; look-alike texts (-0, full-width and Arabic-Indic digits, 42e0, 0x2A, a zero-width space, a number past i64::MAX); values that disagree with their field's type; duplicates; nulls; both join directions. The leading-zero warning is tested both ways round (1001/"01001", 7/"007", 0/"00"), with look-alikes that must not count ("0x5", " 7", "7.0"), and with clean input and same-type text keys, which give no warning.
crates/analysis/tests/join_field.rs runs the tool through rustgis_analysis::run on tables read by the CSV and Shapefile readers (each test checks the reader's typing it relies on): the Census case both ways (no warning), codes with leading zeros (the warning names the count and the first pair), selections on both sides (including a selected target record whose match is among the selected source records), the three duplicate strategies, and the refusal message.
The new tests fail against main's behaviour; I also checked that they fail when the conversion is removed, applied on one side only, replaced by parsing the text as a number, or when the message loses its hint, and that the warning tests fail when either direction of the leading-zero check is removed or the tool drops the warning.
Real data, with rustgis-cli run: the 2020 Census Gazetteer tract file for Tennessee (2020_gaz_tracts_47.txt, 1,701 tracts) and the TIGER/Line 2020 tract shapefile (tl_2020_47_tract.zip). On main both directions fail with key field type mismatch; with this change both join 1,701/1,701, and every joined ALAND/AWATER equals the Gazetteer row and the shapefile's own ALAND.
Join Field supports matching text and integer keys when the text exactly represents the integer. Leading zeros remain significant, so text 007 does not match numeric 7.
Whole-number integer and floating-point keys can match across types. Null and non-finite values do not match.
Join results now report the count and first example of unmatched keys that differ only by leading zeros.
Duplicate-key options determine which matching record is used or whether the join returns an error.
Documentation
Updated Join Field guidance to describe key matching rules and converting incompatible key types.
…ten out in full
An all-digit id is often a number in one table and text in the other: the
CSV reader types the Census Gazetteer's GEOID 47157000100 as an integer,
while the TIGER/Line tract shapefile stores it as text. Join Field refused
the pair with "key field type mismatch", so the most common Census join
needed an extra Add Field and Calculate Field.
A Text key against an Integer key now compares each whole number written
out in full with the text, exactly: no trimming or parsing, so leading
zeros stay meaningful ("01001" does not match 1001). Other incompatible
pairs keep the refusal, and its message now names the way out (Add Field
and Calculate Field). validate_key_compatibility keeps its signature.
Unit tests cover every key type pair, i64 bounds, look-alike texts and
values that disagree with their field's type; tests/join_field.rs runs the
tool on tables read by the CSV and Shapefile readers, in both directions,
with selections, duplicate strategies and codes with leading zeros.

Walkthrough
Join Field now supports Text–Integer key comparisons by rendering whole-number values as decimal text. Leading zeros and other alternate spellings remain significant. The join report can include the count and first example of leading-zero mismatches, and the tool displays that notice.
Changes: Mixed-Key Join Field
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Select and apply key comparison crates/analysis/src/attribute_join.rs
Key compatibility selects exact comparison or decimal-text comparison. Source indexing and target lookup use the selected mode.
The report records the count and first example of leading-zero-only mismatches. The tool displays the notice, and the guide documents matching rules and conversion guidance.

Explanation
Issue [#1178] requires Text/Integer joins by exact written representation and a clearer refusal message. key_comparison selects NumberAsText in both directions, and from_value_compared writes integer values with to_string() without parsing or trimming text. Leading-zero mismatches are counted and reported through JoinFieldReport and the tool message. Unsupported pairs include Add Field and Calculate Field guidance. The user guide and unit, integration, CSV, and Shapefile tests cover these requirements.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to [#1178]. The leading-zero report, JoinFieldReport additions, comparison refactor, refusal-message test update, integration tests, and documentation support the requested join behavior. Removing the unused compatibility validator and making the comparison crate-private support the requested implementation. No unrelated parameter, dependency, command ID, or command-parameter change is shown.

A rabbit checks each digit’s place, Text meets number, face to face. Zeros stay where they were written, Missed pairs get a notice given. Joins return their values true, And tidy rows hop into view.
No correctness bugs found. I traced the Text/Integer comparison path (key_comparison, from_value_compared, source index, and target lookup) and the new tests' expected values by hand. Nothing I could confirm by reading is wrong. I could not compile or run the tests here.
Security
None found. The change adds no input parsing beyond the existing key extraction, and the new integration test writes only to a temp directory it removes.
Performance
None significant. Each Integer key in NumberAsText mode now allocates one String, which is linear in the table size and fine. from_value also clones text keys before they are discarded, but that cost was already there.
Quality
Doc overclaims for FIPS and ZIP codes (docs/user-guide/analysis.md:416, medium confidence). "Census GEOIDs, FIPS codes, ZIP codes still joins" holds only when neither side has lost a leading zero. A spreadsheet's county FIPS stored as numbers (1001) won't join text 01001. The new codes_with_leading_zeros_only_match_as_written test shows this. Inline comment posted with a suggested rewording.
Leading-zero mismatches are only counted, not reported (crates/analysis/src/attribute_join.rs:293, medium confidence). Under AGENTS.md "Never silent", the rows lost to a dropped zero appear only in the unmatched count. A notice counting unmatched text keys that start with 0 against an integer source would meet that rule. Inline comment posted.
validate_key_compatibility is now used only by its own test (crates/analysis/src/attribute_join.rs:105, high confidence, nit). It stays pub through pub mod attribute_join, so there is no warning. Inline comment posted.
AGENTS.md
Quality gates, unwrap/panic use, and tl! are fine. The unwrap/panic! calls are in test code only.
The "Never silent" concern above is the only guideline point I'd raise.
Change size
Compared with the base branch (merge base 8b322b2 to PR head f59edb1).
Add a selected mixed-key match to the source-selection test.
With the current selections, no selected target row matches a selected source row. Target 47157000200 matches gazetteer row 2, but the source selection vec![0, 1] excludes that row. Both asserted ALAND values are therefore null. Discarding every selected source row produces the same nulls, so a regression that drops selected mixed-key matches passes this test.
Also select target 47157000100. It matches gazetteer row 1, which is selected, and yields ALAND 1000. Target 47157000200 keeps its excluded-source null, so the existing excluded-source check stays in place. Output keeps target table order: 47157000100, 47157000200, 47157980100.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/tests/join_field.rs at line 130:
Update the source-selection test to include target row 0 in the tracts
selection, alongside rows 1 and 3. In the GEOID and ALAND assertions, preserve
target table order and verify that GEOID 47157000100 matches the selected source
with ALAND 1000, while GEOID 47157000200 remains null because its matching
source is excluded.

A Text key against an Integer key is compared as written, so a county
FIPS stored as the number 1001 doesn't match the text "01001". Those
records were only counted as unmatched, with nothing saying why. Join
Field now counts unmatched records whose key equals a key in the other
table once leading zeros are dropped, either way round, and adds one
warning with the count and the first pair (target key 1001, source key
"01001").
The user guide no longer says FIPS and ZIP codes always join: they join
when the codes match as written, and a lost zero leaves the record
unmatched with that warning.
validate_key_compatibility is removed: Join Field calls key_comparison
directly and nothing else used it.
The selection test now selects a target record whose match is among the
selected source records, so it fails if selected mixed-key matches are
dropped.

Join Field's report gained two leading-zero counts. Only join_field
builds a JoinFieldReport, so marking it non_exhaustive lets new counts
be added later without breaking struct literals in other crates.
