Summary

Part 2 of 3 for #1033. Stacked on #1347 (the analysis plane): until that merges, this diff includes its commit; the change here is fix(engine): edit polar features on the ground and its review follow-ups (the commits after it that aren't merges of part 1). Part 3 also changes crates/engine/src/cmd/design.rs (Validate Topology's warning; here Move, Rotate, Scale and Split), and the two merge cleanly in either order.

edit.move, edit.rotate and edit.scale worked in Web Mercator, which clamps latitudes to ±85.0511°, so a polygon between 87°S and 89°S, moved 1 km east, was stored with every vertex at 85.0511°S.

Within ±85.05° nothing changes: a feature is edited in Web Mercator, exactly as before (to the bit, which a test checks), while it and its Web Mercator result stay within ±85.05°. Otherwise it's edited rigidly on the ground, in azimuthal equidistant planes, as agreed on the issue:

  • Move takes selected features that share a vertex together (one place however it's written: 180° or −180°, 0.0 or -0.0, a pole at any longitude and to within POLE_TOLERANCE), as a turn of the world. Their center goes the distance and direction asked along the geodesic, and every vertex keeps its distance and direction from the center, the direction turned as much as the geodesic's own direction turns (from GeographicLib's direct solution, so a move of a trillionth of a meter turns nothing). On a sphere that's a rotation, so a move is rigid however far it goes: moved 3,000 km, a polar box keeps its sides and diagonals to 0.1% (a shift in the plane at its old center would shrink its east–west sides by several percent). Shared vertices land exactly together, even where a line runs a full turn around the pole. Other selected features move independently: an equator box selected with a polar one moves exactly as it would alone, and features near both poles each move about their own center. A center at a pole takes its directions from the prime meridian, so how the features' longitudes are written doesn't matter.
  • Rotate and scale turn each feature about its own center.
  • The center is the length-weighted center of a feature's edges, sampled every half degree as the plane draws them, so adding vertices along an edge hardly moves it: 53 extra vertices along one edge of a 20° box at 86°S move a turned corner by under 50 m. Points selected with lines don't pull it; points alone are centered on themselves. One command samples at most a million stretches in all, groups in selection order; past them, an edge counts in one.
  • Longitudes stay written as they were: each point, and each line's or shell's first vertex, lands in the range nearest where it was (a point at 90° moved a kilometer stays near 90°, not −270°), the rest running on from it, past ±180° as within ±85.05° (a box at 179.5°–179.9°, 87°N, moved 50 km east is written 188°–190°; one carried more than halfway around a pole is written within half a turn of where it was). A vertex two features share, written a turn apart in each, stays so. A polygon's holes are placed in its shell's range of longitudes, however far the shell runs on or follows a shared vertex.

An edit that moving the vertices one by one would break is refused, and nothing changes:

  • a line or polygon that reaches a pole (refusing a feature that encloses a pole was agreed for now);
  • one with an edge spanning 180° of longitude or more (which way around it goes is unclear once moved; so a polar polygon written across ±180° that way is refused too);
  • one the edit would carry onto or around a pole, as the moved shape shows, or whose result, written straight in longitude/latitude, would have an edge spanning 180° or more or a ring no longer closed;
  • a move of more than 10,000 km on the ground, or a scale carrying a vertex more than 10,000 km from the center (well short of its antipode, where the plane tears).

The whole edit is refused and rolled back; for a move, the pole and 180° checks on features leaving the square come before any center is worked out. Since the whole edit is refused, so selecting every feature of a world layer and moving it fails while Antarctica, which reaches the South Pole, is selected: leave it out (on main it was clamped). A move of no distance leaves features beyond 85.05° as they are (a cap reaching the pole included), and with only those selected says it changes nothing. A point at a pole can be moved onto or off it, and a vertex missing a coordinate stays as it was without spoiling the rest. edit.split beyond 85.05° splits where it's asked (on main, at 85.0511°), through the analysis plane. Where the point asked or the line reaches beyond 85.05°, where the plane stretches east–west far more than north–south, it cuts at the line's point nearest on the ground. Each segment is sampled evenly in the plane, once for each 22.5° of longitude or latitude it spans (eight times at least, 1,024 at most), and each basin among the samples (one each time a segment going around a pole passes the point) refined by golden-section search to a millimeter while it could hold a nearer point; a segment that can't come nearer than the nearest end of a segment with both ends known (by the triangle inequality, from its ends' distances and a bound on its length) is skipped, and a part of one point or a segment missing a coordinate passed over (within ±85.05° too, where on main a segment missing a coordinate took the cut). One split works out at most a million distances along segments; past them, a segment counts as near as the nearest point found on it so far (its nearer end at first), and the split warns how many lines it cut, or left whole when that point was an end (with no line split, its error says so), where a part of a segment it couldn't search might hold a nearer point than the one it found (from that part's ends, by the triangle inequality). A split at a vertex, to within a millimeter, no longer repeats the vertex in both parts as on main, within ±85.05° too. A place that's no place (a latitude past ±90°, a coordinate missing) is refused, where main clamped it. A ground-to-grid correction applies to a polar move as to one within ±85.05°: both take the corrected distances as meters on the ground.

Trade-offs, in the editing guide:

  • Only vertices move rigidly; edges stay straight in longitude/latitude between them, so long edges bend, the more so the nearer the pole one end is than the other, and far less for moves north–south: an edge from 87° to 89° (the issue's polygon) bends 333 m for each kilometer moved east and 2.9 m for each moved north; one from 89.5° to 89.99°, about 12 m for each meter moved east (nearly 10 km for a 1 km move). The guide says to add vertices first.
  • Moving neighbors one at a time, one within ±85.05° and one beyond, can leave their shared corners apart, by about the distance moved times 2·sin(Δλ/2), Δλ being the corner's longitude from the center of the one moved on the ground (a tenth for 6°, half for 30°): select them together.
  • Right by a pole a move's directions turn quickly with its center's place: a center at the pole takes "east" from the prime meridian (toward 90°E), one a meter away from its own longitude.
  • Rotate and scale turn a feature within ±85.05° about its Web Mercator extent's center, as on main, and one beyond it about its center on the ground, so a turn that just stays within 85.05° and one that just passes it turn about different centers and can land apart.
  • Within ±85.05° a move is made in Web Mercator, as before, which a long move north covers less ground than asked in, so a move that just stays within 85.05° and one that just passes it can land far apart.
  • Selected features sharing vertices move as one rigid body, so in a large connected group the parts far from its center turn with it rather than each going the distance asked.

These are in the guide rather than in a notice for each edit: every vertex lands exactly where the rigid move puts it, and how an edge between two vertices bends depends only on where its ends are, as with any edit that moves vertices. Behavior change: moving, rotating or scaling a selection that includes a line or polygon reaching a pole (Antarctica in a world layer) is now refused, where main clamped it to 85.05°S.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, all tests, layers) and cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web: pass on this branch.
  • crates/engine/tests/polar_edits.rs (42 tests): a split at a vertex leaving it once in each part, at 10°N and 88°N; a split along 70,000 edges at 88°N, more than one split searches, saying so, and a line selected after it, left with too few distances to search, left whole and saying so, while alone it's searched in full and says nothing; latitudes of 95° and −90.5° refused; a split within ±85.05° passing over a segment missing a coordinate; a split passing over a part of one point and a segment missing a coordinate; a split along an edge going twice around the pole cut where it comes nearest (the previous revision cut 114 km off); a move of no distance leaving a polar box and a cap reaching the pole as they are, to the bit; a split at 89°N taking the part nearest on the ground, cutting at the point nearest on the ground (near 47°E, where the plane's would be near 13°E), and comparing on the ground from 84°N near a line reaching beyond 85.05°; points around a pole moved a kilometer keeping their longitudes as written; a polygon with edges spanning 180° refused; the regression test from the issue (87°S–89°S stays put through move, rotate and scale); rigid moves, turns and scales on the ground, each to 0.1% (a 30° rotation turns the sides and diagonals by 30°, a 10 km move goes 10 km east, a scale by 1.5 grows them by half); a 300 km move turning the feature with north (about 53° around the pole); a 3,000 km move rigid; moves of a trillionth and a billionth of a meter moving it no farther; a point moved onto a pole and off it; a 19,000 km move and a 100,000× scale refused, with their message; refusals (a cap reaching a pole, by move, rotate and scale) leaving every selected feature as it was; a polygon straddling 85.05° moved, turned and scaled; an in-band box whose Web Mercator scale would pass 85.05° scaled on the ground (each side doubling, to 0.5%); a point moved 1,000 km north from 84°N crosses the pole to 87°N on 180° (on main it stops at 88.66°N); neighbors moved together keeping their shared corners, written as 0.0/-0.0 or 180°/−180°, in a chain of three, and over the pole with a hole kept inside; a vertex shared by a line spiraling once around the pole and the next line; points around a pole moving the same however their longitudes are written, east from the pole being toward 90°E; edits within ±85.05° matching Web Mercator's to the bit; an equator box moved with a polar one; features near both poles; a polygon across ±180° staying narrow at 10°N and 86°S; undo; a line; a missing coordinate keeping its latitude; a pivot that doesn't move with extra vertices; a vertex missing a coordinate, or with an infinite latitude, staying to the bit through a move, turn or scale on the ground and within ±85.05°, counted once per feature in one warning, and nothing said for a whole feature or a refused edit.
  • Unit tests: a split's segment search stays within its budget (and with too little, takes the nearer end); one command's center sampling stays within its budget; a tiny move on the ground doesn't turn; a vertex is one key however its longitude is written (190.1° and −169.9°, 36,000,000,010° and 10°, −1e-20° and 0°, a pole and 5e-8° short of it included); a hole lands in its shell however far the shell goes; points moved with lines don't pull their center; in rustgis-geom, a weighted point counts as that many (and weighted antipodes balance out), and a geodesic arrives turned as far as it has gone around the pole.
  • Against part 1 alone (this branch's polar_edits.rs on its parent commit): 32 of the 42 fail; the 10 that pass check what's meant to stay as it was (edits within ±85.05° matching Web Mercator to the bit, an equator box moved with a polar one, undo, and the like).

…os#1033)

The tools worked in Web Mercator, which clamps latitudes to ±85.0511°, so polar
vertices landed on 85.05°: Clip returned nothing, Dissolve no geometry, and
Simplify, Minimum Bounding Geometry and Feature To Point collapsed polygons
between 87°S and 89°S onto 85.0511°S.

They now work in one analysis plane, `lonlat_to_plane`/`plane_to_lonlat` in
rustgis-geom: Web Mercator bit for bit within ±85.0511°, continued beyond at
the slope it reaches there, so nothing is clamped and the poles lie at
±26,424 km. Like `lonlat_to_merc` since opengeos#1001, it keeps longitudes unwrapped.
convert.rs (every overlay and geometry tool), Clip's point test and its
candidate index, the convex hull, Near's shared point and the topology checks
go through it; `lonlat_to_merc` is unchanged for drawing, tiles and (until a
later change) radius searches. Coordinates within ±85.05° project as before; a
result can change where an edge crosses 85.05°, which the plane keeps straight
where Web Mercator clamped its far end.

Tools added since the plan follow the plane too:
- Geodesic buffers split an outline's edges against edges straight in the
plane, so beyond 85.05° (where they were left whole) a buffer keeps its
  distance between vertices as elsewhere.
- Tabulate Intersection measures areas with each edge straight in the plane
(a rhumb line within ±85.05°, straight in longitude and latitude beyond), so
a polar class's share and a zone's percentage are no longer taken as if its
part beyond 85.05° had no area, and a class wholly beyond it gets its row.
Its notice about the 85.05° limit is gone; the guide says how `area_km2`,
along the shortest way between vertices, and the percentages can differ
  near a pole.
- Kernel Density leaves out a point (a multipoint's member too) its coordinate
system can't hold, as Web Mercator can't one past 85.05°, rather than piling
it on the edge, and says how many it left out.

Beyond 85.05° the plane stretches east–west by sec(latitude) but north–south by
a constant sec(85.05°), and a pole is a line in it. A dangle end there is
measured in the azimuthal equidistant projection about its pole, at WGS 84's
curvature there, up to the pole and across ±180°: against the parts in the
grid cells within its reach, and of each edge only the stretch within reach,
in pieces that stray from it (a spiral in that frame) by at most a thousandth
of the tolerance. Cells, entries, parts opened and pieces count against the
work limit. The grid is sized for 85.0511° rather than 85°, so an end between
the two no longer misses a neighbor in the next cell, and it fills only the
cells within the lines' extent.

For a feature wholly beyond 85.05°, Simplify already converts its tolerance with
a scale no larger than the smaller of the plane's two, so it drops nothing
farther than the tolerance on the ground.
edit.move, edit.rotate and edit.scale worked in Web Mercator, which clamps
latitudes to ±85.0511°, so a polygon between 87°S and 89°S, moved 1 km east,
was stored with every vertex at 85.0511°S.

A feature is still edited in Web Mercator, exactly as before, while it and its
Web Mercator result stay within ±85.05°. Otherwise it's edited rigidly on the
ground, in azimuthal equidistant planes:
- a move takes selected features that share a vertex together, as a turn of
the world about the center of their edges (weighed by length, so a vertex
added along an edge hardly moves it), so shared vertices stay shared; other
features, such as an equator box selected with a polar one, move as they
  would alone;
- rotate and scale turn each feature about that center of its own.
Longitudes stay written as they were, running on past ±180° as they do within
±85.05°. An edit that moving the vertices one by one would break is refused
and nothing changes: a line or polygon reaching a pole, one with an edge
spanning 180° of longitude or more, and one the edit would carry onto or
around a pole. A move of no distance leaves features beyond 85.05° as they
are. A point at a pole can be moved off it, and a coordinate missing stays
missing, alone.

edit.split beyond 85.05° splits where it's asked, through the analysis plane;
where the point or the line reaches beyond 85.05°, at the line's point nearest
on the ground, each segment's basins searched within a budget per command;
past it, a segment counts as near as the nearest point found on it so far (its
nearer end at first), and the split warns how many lines it cut, or left whole
when that point was an end, where a part it couldn't search might hold a
nearer point. A split at a vertex (to within a millimeter) no longer repeats
it in both parts, within ±85.05° too. A place that's no place (a latitude past ±90°, a
coordinate missing) is refused, where it was clamped.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(engine): edit polar features on the ground (#1033)" matches the main change. The engine's Move, Rotate, Scale, and Split commands now edit features beyond ±85.05° on the ground instead of clamping them in Web Mercator. The title is specific, concise, and uses a conventional prefix. It names the engine scope and the core behavior. The issue number is a minor addition. The PR objectives title (#1348) differs from the title's (#1033) reference, but the title itself is accurate.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Summary, Testing, and Related issue. It explains the change, the Web Mercator-preserving behavior within ±85.05°, the ground-based edits beyond it, refusal conditions, and the behavior change. The Testing section lists the CI commands and the 42 polar-edit tests, and it reports the results against part 1. The Related issue section says "Part of #1033." The UI evidence section is missing. The template requires it, even when no visible UI change exists, and the author should keep the 'No visible UI change.' line. The author wrote that line in the template but the PR description omits the UI evidence heading and the line entirely. The description is long and dense, and the template asks for concise prose, but it covers the required information.

The note says "as past 85.05° in Web Mercator" whatever the layer's CRS, but this tool accepts any projected CRS (UTM, State Plane, ...). For those layers the explanation is wrong, so the note misleads when it fires. Suggest dropping the parenthetical:

The kernel-density test in this file asserts m.contains("85.05°") on this note, so that assertion needs the same change. Confidence: medium (about 60%). This is a message-accuracy point; it doesn't change results.

Fixed in #1347 (2f028aa), merged in here: the note names the system and says "past 85.05° of latitude" only for Web Mercator.

A vertex with a missing coordinate is left where it was, and nothing tells the user. The move, rotate or scale still reports success with modified: n, so the feature's other vertices are carried and this one is not. AGENTS.md asks that a command which approximates data say what, how much and where, so this needs a count-per-kind notice (for example via the Session::warn path, one notice per command) and a test that checks it fires for lossy input and not for clean input. The fix has to reach polar_transform, which returns Result<Geometry, String> and has no way to report yet, so I haven't suggested a block. Confidence: medium-low (about 40%). Hostile input only.

Fixed. Move, Rotate and Scale now warn once, "N feature(s) have a vertex missing a coordinate, which was left where it was" (6052aa2), and a9eceb7 and 4b7c33e make that true within ±85.05° too, where a turn used to make (NaN, 11) into (NaN, NaN). Such a vertex, or one with an infinite coordinate, now stays to the bit on both paths. On the ground it no longer refuses the edit or pulls the center off. a_vertex_missing_a_coordinate_left_where_it_was_is_counted checks the vertex and the warning on both paths, several features counted once each, and a refused edit saying nothing.

Bugs

  • None confirmed. I traced the polar move, rotate and scale paths, the split search and its pruning bound, the dangle check's polar ends, and the area and overlay changes. I found no crash path, rollback gap or wrong result. Session::run restores the project on error, so the refusals really are rolled back.

Security

  • None. The change does no I/O and adds no dependencies.

Performance

  • The work limits look sound. Every new loop charges a shared budget (CENTER_STEPS_TOTAL, SPLIT_STEPS_TOTAL, MAX_WORK) and the piece counts are capped. I didn't find an unbounded path. Confidence: medium-high.

Quality

  • crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:2869 (medium, about 60%): the kernel-density note says "as past 85.05° in Web Mercator" for any CRS, but the tool accepts UTM and State Plane too. Inline comment posted with a suggestion. The test at the same file asserts that text, so it needs the same change.
  • Two wording nits, left for the release quality pass: the second split notice reads "…couldn't be searched in full … and were left whole", and split in design.rs has grown to about 150 lines and could be split up.

AGENTS.md

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/design.rs:768 (medium-low, about 40%): a vertex with a missing coordinate is left in place with no notice, and the command still reports success. That is a silent approximation under "Never silent". Inline comment posted. It is hostile-input only, and the fix needs plumbing through polar_transform.
  • Rotate and scale don't group selected neighbours that share a vertex, so two selected polar parcels split at their shared corner. Move does group them. This matches the documented "own center" behaviour and what main does within ±85.05°, so I'm noting it, not flagging it. Worth confirming with the author.

I left 0 earlier concerns alone, because there were no prior review threads on this PR. The PR body's test count (41 in polar_edits.rs) matches the file. Engine messages aren't wrapped in tl! anywhere in the crate, so the translation rule doesn't apply to them.

Nitpick Add a two-layer shared-vertex case to polaredits.rs.

20-23: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a two-layer shared-vertex case to polar_edits.rs.

Every helper in polar_edits.rs builds one layer per session. move_planes groups selected features across all selected layers, but no test checks that grouping. A later change that limits grouping to one layer would still pass this suite. Add a test with two layers that share a vertex, select a row in each, run edit.move, and assert that the shared vertex still matches.

Add a two-layer shared-vertex test to the `polar_edits.rs` test suite, using the
existing setup pattern to create both layers and select one row in each. Run
`edit.move` on the selected features and assert that the shared vertex remains
matching across the layers.
Nitpick Add a test for the nearest cut on a capped multi-turn edge.

353-368: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a test for the nearest cut on a capped multi-turn edge.

The multi-turn split test at crates/engine/tests/polar_edits.rs:353-368 covers a 700° edge. That edge needs 32 sampling pieces, so it never reaches the 1,024-piece cap in nearest_on_ground. No other test checks the cut location on an edge that reaches the cap. A regression in the capped branch would pass the suite. Add a test on an edge with a longitude span above 23,040°, and compare its cut with a brute-force nearest point.

Nitpick Add a point just past the Web Mercator cutoff to the Kernel Density rejection test.

6402-6405: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a point just past the Web Mercator cutoff to the Kernel Density rejection test.

The rejection test uses only 87° and 89°. The round-trip check admits points up to about 85.05123°, so a wider cutoff of 86° or a change within that band would still pass. Add a point at 85.0513° and assert that it is counted as beyond.

Nitpick Add a polar polygon clip case with a partial mask overlap.

Add a polar polygon clip case with a partial mask overlap.

The polar clip assertion uses a mask that covers both polygons. A clip that returns the input polygons unchanged would pass it. No test checks a polygon wholly beyond 85.05° cut by a partly overlapping mask. Add one that asserts the cut latitudes and longitudes.

# Conflicts:

…pengeos#1033)

- Geodesic buffers: an edge reaching beyond 85.05° is always checked, even
when short. STRAY_PER_M2 holds for rhumb lines, not for the spirals that
straight edges are there: a 10 km point buffer at 89.9°N was 25 m off its
circle (tolerance 0.2 m), as the doc on may_stray said it shouldn't be.
- Dangles beyond 85.05°: the end's own part counts from where the walk
passes twice the tolerance, inside an edge too, not only from that edge's
far vertex. An edge winding round the pole passes back over the end.
- An edge needing more than POLAR_PIECES_MAX pieces (one winding round a
pole on the order of 180 times) stops the dangle check, reported as
incomplete, instead of being measured coarser without a word.
- Kernel Density: the note on points a system can't hold names the system,
and says "past 85.05° of latitude" only for Web Mercator.
…eded (opengeos#1033)

From a second review round on the polar fixes, and CodeRabbit's on opengeos#1348.

- Dangles beyond 85.05°: the walk along an end's own edges stops at the
piece that passes twice the tolerance, at the point within it found by
length, and only those pieces count as work. A hairpin crossing its end
inside a long piece meets it, and a long edge no longer costs its whole
  length.
- A stretch needing more than POLAR_PIECES_MAX pieces is measured in that
many and the check says it's incomplete, but goes on: one hostile edge no
longer stops the check for the rest of the layer.
- Geodesic buffers: an edge with both ends beyond 85.05° is bounded as the
spiral it is about the pole (Δλ(ρΔλ + 2Δρ)/8, plus each frame's turn),
so edges far from the pole again skip the full look. The fuzz test now
tries short edges on planes to ±89.99°; over a thousand pass the bound,
and the full look agrees on each. Buffers across ±180° and round a pole
  are tested too.
- Kernel Density in Web Mercator leaves out a latitude past 85.05° before
projecting: the round trip let one a hair past it onto the raster's edge.
- Tabulate Intersection's polar test checks area_km2 against GeographicLib.
…eep the spherical mean finite

Move, Rotate and Scale leave a vertex missing a coordinate where it was,
within ±85.05° and on the ground alike, and said nothing. They now say how
many of the features they changed have one, in one warning.

SphericalMean::center compared the summed vectors with the total weight but
then passed them on unscaled, so a lone point of tiny weight had no center;
it now takes the mean of the vectors. Weights whose total would overflow
turned a valid mean into None; the totals are now scaled down by 2^512 when
they would pass 1e300, and every later weight with them, which leaves the
mean as it was.

Review follow-up for opengeos#1348.
…polar radius (opengeos#1033)

- Dangles beyond 85.05°: the walk along an end's own edge is cut into at
most POLAR_PIECES_MAX pieces, as a measured stretch already is, and the
check says it's incomplete. An edge winding round a pole a hair from it
can't use up the check's work.
- A piece count that overflows (coordinates far out of range) is one
piece, said to be coarse, not POLAR_PIECES_MAX pieces that measure
  nothing better.
- When an end's earlier edges come to exactly twice the tolerance, all of
the next edge counts: its first piece was skipped.
- Geodesic buffers: the spiral bound beyond 85.05° measures distance from
the pole with the polar radius of curvature (a²/b), as the dangle check
  does, through one spiral_stray.
…he ground (opengeos#1033)

The walk along a polar end's own edge placed the point where it passes
twice the tolerance in proportion to the piece's length, but the piece's
parameter isn't: an edge reaching from beyond 85.05° far into the band is
one piece, along which the plane stretches about 11.6 times more per
meter beyond 85.05° than within it. A line from 86°N down the meridian to
60°N measured "the rest" from about 0.77 times the tolerance, so its
polar end met its own line and wasn't reported, the check still
complete. The place is now found by halving the piece on the distance
from its start, at or just past it, never before.

Validate Topology's note on incomplete rules now says a rule is also
incomplete when it measured a part coarsely.
…±85.05° too (opengeos#1033)

Move, Rotate and Scale warned that a vertex missing a coordinate "was left
where it was", but only the ground path left it: within ±85.05° a turn
made (NaN, 11) into (NaN, NaN), a scale moved its latitude, and an
infinite latitude was clamped onto 85.05°. Web Mercator now leaves such a
vertex as it is, to the bit, as the ground does.

On the ground, a vertex with an infinite coordinate is now no place as a
missing one is: it no longer counts as reaching a pole or making an edge
wide (which refused the edit), isn't measured against the 10,000 km reach,
and an edge to it doesn't weigh in the center (an infinite latitude
reached a pole in the plane, pulling the center thousands of km off).

SphericalMean leaves out a subnormal weight, as a zero one: half its unit
vector rounds to nothing, so alone it gave a wrong center.

Tests: the vertex stays to the bit on both paths, with an infinite
latitude too; several features count once each, a point a turn leaves
alone and a whole feature not at all; a refused edit says nothing; totals
scaled down once they hold a point; a subnormal weight alone has no
center.
…k an overflowing edge (opengeos#1033)

From review of the polar dangle fixes:

- The halving that places twice the tolerance within a piece now stops
once the place is within a millimeter past it (about 25 halvings, not
60), and each halving counts as a unit of work, as each piece does: a
layer of many short polar lines can't run the check far past its work
  limit.
- An edge whose length overflows (coordinates far out of range) is walked
as one piece between its own vertices, and the check says it's
incomplete, as edge_from already did: interpolating to its end gave a
missing coordinate, the walk's length went missing, and the rest of the
end's own line was never measured.
…opengeos#1033)

A vertex with an infinite longitude, left as it was, made the check that
no moved edge spans 180° refuse a move, turn or scale on the ground, saying
it would carry the feature onto or around a pole. Edges to such a vertex
are no edges there, as in the check before the edit. The test now edits a
feature with a latitude infinite, a longitude missing and a longitude
infinite.

This field is the plane-based area that the percentage column divides by (line 4032). In the same row, area_km2 (line 4030) is the ellipsoidal ground area. Beyond about 85.05°, the two measures can disagree widely. The analysis.md text added in this PR says so for a cap along 88°N (about 64%). The notice that used to flag polar parts was removed here, and nothing at runtime now says that percentage and area_km2 measure different things. AGENTS.md ("Never silent") asks a tool that approximates to say what, how much and where. Suggest either emitting a count-per-kind notice when a zone or class polygon has edges beyond 85.05° (with a test for clean and for polar input), or computing the percentage on the ground area. Confidence: about 55%. I haven't built or run this, so the size of the gap is taken from the PR's own docs, not measured.

Fixed in #1347 (f71ea65), merged in here: Tabulate Intersection now gives a notice with a count of zone and class features that have an edge beyond 85.05° running east or west, saying their percentages follow the map while area_km2 follows the ground. I kept the percentages on the map measure, since that's what the overlay cuts along: a feature's shares in zones that cover it then add up to its whole value.

Code review

I read the full diff (4,355 lines), the staged base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding source. I did not build or run the tests, so everything below comes from reading. Posted one inline comment, on crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:3753.

Bugs

  • None confirmed. I checked the points most likely to break:
    • modify writes features in place before recording undo, but Session::run → guarded restores the project snapshot on any error, so a mid-command refusal is rolled back as the PR claims.
    • Divisions in rhumb_ring_area, Cells::key, walk_edge, and nearest_on_ground are guarded or have non-zero denominators.
    • Non-finite angle and factor inputs are rejected by f() (which filters non-finite values) or by the factor range check.
    • Union-find, the placed snapping, and the ring-closure check look consistent on read-through.

Security

  • None. No I/O, no new dependencies, and no secrets touched.

Performance

  • No new issue. Polar work is bounded by MAX_WORK, CENTER_STEPS_TOTAL, and SPLIT_STEPS_TOTAL. PolarEnds::new scans the grid once per dangles call, which is fine.

Quality (left for the release quality pass)

  • The ground_movable message "(as features beyond 85.05° are)" is hard to parse.
  • geodesic.rs around line 125 has a comment line well past the surrounding width.
  • The analysis.md "Leaving radius empty…" sentence is appended to an existing long line.

AGENTS.md

  • Never silent (confidence about 55%): percentage divides by the plane-based map_area_m2, while area_km2 is ellipsoidal. Beyond 85.05° these can disagree widely, and the PR removed the polar notice without a replacement. The inline comment has the details.
  • Documented but not flagged: Minimum Bounding Geometry of points spread around a pole gives a sliver, and a move that just stays inside 85.05° lands differently from one that just passes it. The PR documents both as trade-offs, so I did not raise them.

Prior threads

  • I left 1 concern alone because it is already raised and its code is unchanged: the non-polar dangle tolerance at topology.rs (about 0.4% mismatch at the 85.05° boundary).
  • The other 7 appear addressed in the head: the missing-coordinate notice (move_features), the kernel-density wording, the round-trip tolerance, the area_km2 assertion, the weight overflow and normalization, and the own-part measurement in PolarEnds::meets. The threads are still open, so they may need resolving by hand.

Search every turn a stored longitude can occupy, not only one turn each way.

Reach::shifts covers only the end's longitude and one turn either way. Edits keep stored longitudes near their previous values, so a polar part can sit two or more turns away from an end that is at the same ground point. The occupied-cell search then skips that part, and dangles can report the end as dangling with a complete result. Find the parts by normalized longitude, or search all turns a stored part can occupy, and add a test with a coincident part stored 720° away.

… near a pole; a count that's no number is coarse (opengeos#1033)

From the second round of review:

- Tabulate Intersection says how many zone and class features have an
edge beyond 85.05° running east or west: the overlay takes it straight
in longitude and latitude, as the map draws it, and the percentages and
shares follow, while area_km2 takes the shortest way on the ground,
which near a pole can differ widely. As for the antimeridian, one
notice with a count per layer; tests with polar features and without.
- The map measure's cut of an edge across 85.05° is tested on a triangle
with two diagonal edges there, against ∮ sin φ dλ summed in a million
  steps along each edge.
- In the dangle check, a piece count that isn't a number (a missing
coordinate, or a zero-length stretch of an edge whose length
overflows) is coarse, as an overflowing one is, so the check says it's
  incomplete.
- POLE_TOLERANCE's doc says only the tests use it here.
The two refusals that end '(as features beyond 85.05° are)' now lead with it: features beyond 85.05° are edited on the ground, which can't yet take an edge spanning 180° or more, or carry one more than 10,000 km from its center.

On the rest of the latest review: the two refusals ending "(as features beyond 85.05° are)" now lead with it (d89301e): "features beyond 85.05° are moved, rotated and scaled on the ground, which can't yet take a line or polygon with an edge spanning 180° of longitude or more", and likewise for the 10,000 km reach. The long comment and guide lines are left for the release quality pass.

Latitudes past ±90° are clamped to the pole here with no notice. edit::validate doesn't reject out-of-range latitudes, so a reader that doesn't validate could hand a tool a vertex at, say, 95°, and the analysis would treat it as the pole without saying so. AGENTS.md asks that approximations be reported, so either the readers or the tools should count and report these (one notice per kind), or this should be documented as a deliberate clamp. Confidence about 35%: I haven't checked which readers validate latitude, so the reach of this is inferred from the code.

Code review

I read the full diff (about 4,000 lines across 13 files) and the 10 prior review threads. I found no high-confidence bugs. The polar code is carefully bounded (work limits, saturating arithmetic, no unchecked indexing in non-test code), and I checked that Session::run/guarded restores the project on error, so a refused multi-feature edit doesn't leave partial changes.

Bugs

  • None found at high confidence. I traced the dangle grid and PolarEnds reach logic, the split's ground-distance bound, the SphericalMean rescaling, and the rhumb_ring_area cuts and Taylor branches, and they hold up.

Security

  • None found. The PR adds no I/O, parsing, or external input paths.

Performance

  • None blocking. The split's ground search is capped at 1M distances, the dangle check at MAX_WORK, and the centre sampling at 1M stretches. Each budget is charged before the work it covers.

Quality (grouped nits, all optional for the release quality pass)

  • crates/geom/src/lib.rs: the POLE_TOLERANCE doc says "here only the tests use it", but design.rs and the analysis code use it too.
  • crates/engine/src/cmd/design.rs: the move_planes doc has a stray "With the map, how many vertices move on the ground." that reads oddly.
  • crates/analysis/src/topology.rs: PolarEnds::meets and the grid loop repeat the same reach and column logic in two places.

AGENTS.md

  • Radius-based measures still clamp latitudes beyond 85.05° with no runtime notice. crates/analysis/src/network.rs within (about line 426) projects with lonlat_to_merc, which clamps, and analysis.md says radius selections "still measure in local Web Mercator". The guide documents the limit, but AGENTS.md asks for a notice in the run. This is pre-existing and not in the diff, so I did not post it inline. Confidence about 50%.
  • Inline: crates/geom/src/lib.rs:200. lonlat_to_plane clamps latitudes past ±90° to the pole silently, and edit::validate doesn't reject them. Confidence about 35%. Posted as an inline comment.

Already raised, left alone (10 threads)

  • Nine of the earlier concerns are answered and fixed or withdrawn, so I did not repeat them.
  • One is still open with no reply: crates/analysis/src/topology.rs:431, where Reach::shifts only checks one turn either way. The code is unchanged, so I did not re-post it. It still applies.

Nitpick Add a southern-latitude ring to the map area cut test.

7243-7243: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a southern-latitude ring to the map area cut test.

The test ring has only northern latitudes, so no edge crosses −85.05°. rhumb_ring_area handles the southern crossing through its (south, -max_lat) cut entry, but no assertion exercises that entry. A regression that affects only the southern cut would leave this test passing.

Add a mirrored ring with negated latitudes and check it against the same oracle:

[(0.0, -80.0), (20.0, -88.0), (-15.0, -87.0), (0.0, -80.0)]

The oracle already compares absolute values, so the same assertion applies to the mirrored ring.

…le; word Tabulate's polar notice for the plane (opengeos#1033)

Simplify takes its tolerance east-west at 85°'s scale beyond 85.05°, so it removes less there than asked; it now says how many features reach that far, and the user guide says so (a 3 km tolerance at 89.9°N takes out about 60 m east-west). Tabulate Intersection's polar notice now says the analysis plane takes an edge straight in longitude and latitude beyond 85.05° (a rhumb line within it), not 'the map'.

Silent approximation. Once the command's budget (CENTER_STEPS_TOTAL, a million stretches) is spent, every later edge is weighed in one piece, so the center that move, rotate or scale turns about is computed differently for the rest of the selection, and nothing is reported. AGENTS.md asks that an approximation say what, how much and where. Suggest having plane_at return how many edges it weighed in one (or a flag), passing that up through about_center and move_planes, and warning once per command, e.g. "N feature(s) were turned about a center worked out coarsely, past one command's limit of a million stretches". A test should check that a large selection that exhausts the budget gives the notice and a small one doesn't. Confidence about 55%: I haven't run a selection large enough to hit the budget, so the size of the effect is inferred from the code.

Rotate and scale on the ground take each feature's own center (plane_at(std::iter::once(g))), so two selected features beyond 85.05° that share a vertex get different transforms, and their shared corner lands in two places. Move groups features through shared vertices (move_planes); rotate and scale don't, and the editing guide's shared-corner caveat only covers Move. Within the square, Web Mercator rotate already works per feature on main, so this is partly existing behavior, but the ground path is new and nothing tells the user. Two options: group shared vertices for rotate and scale too, or state in editing.md that these edits split shared corners on the ground. Confidence about 45%: I haven't built a two-polygon case to confirm the gap.

Code review

I read the summary, the staged metadata and prior-review threads, and most of the diff (design.rs, geom/src/lib.rs, geodesic.rs, topology.rs, the tool changes, and the docs). I did not build or run the code. The topology.rs dangle-check internals and the 1,000-line polar_edits.rs test file were reviewed at the level of their logic and claims, not traced line by line.

Bugs

  • Nothing confirmed at high confidence. Low-confidence note: polar_transform checks reach with p.x.hypot(p.y) > GROUND_REACH_M, which is false for NaN, so a NaN vertex from a finite input would pass and be stored, since edit::validate does not reject NaN. I think Aeqd::forward doesn't produce NaN for finite input, so this is low (~25%).

Security

  • None found. Hostile-input handling (get, checked_sub, charge/work limits, Cells::key saturating casts) looks consistent with AGENTS.md.

Performance

  • None found beyond the existing work budgets, which are enforced.

Quality

  • Move/rotate/scale on the ground share one per-command center budget, and when it runs out each later edge is weighed in one piece. See the inline comment at design.rs:592.
  • Rotate and scale on the ground don't group shared vertices (see the inline comment at design.rs:630).
  • Nits, left for the release quality pass: the "and were left whole" notice (design.rs:1162) reads awkwardly after "N line(s) … couldn't be searched"; a few doc comments in geodesic.rs are unevenly wrapped.

AGENTS.md

  • Silent approximation: the plane_at budget fallback (design.rs:592) has no notice, which conflicts with "Never silent".
  • The other new notices (kernel density, simplify, tabulate, split, missing-coordinate warning) have notices and tests both ways, as the rule asks.

Already raised, left alone (2 concerns):

  • topology.rs Reach::shifts covers only one turn each way. The thread is still open and the code is unchanged, so I did not post again.
  • geom/src/lib.rs lonlat_to_plane clamps latitudes past ±90° with no notice. The thread is still open and the code is unchanged.
  • The other earlier threads are resolved or withdrawn, and the author's fixes check out in the diff.

Nitpick Assert the reported count in the polar notice test.

5447-5450: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the reported count in the polar notice test.

The test named simplify_says_how_many_features_reach_beyond_85_degrees checks only that a message contains beyond 85.05°. A regression that reports the wrong nonzero count, such as 2 feature(s) for one polar feature, still passes. Match the exact count in the positive assertion.

🧪 Suggested fix
-            res.messages.iter().any(|m| m.contains("beyond 85.05°"))
+            res.messages.iter().any(|m| m.contains("1 feature(s) reach beyond 85.05°"))

Correct the simplify notice: polar features use their label-point latitude scale, not 85°.

simplify_geometry converts the tolerance with merc_scale(feature_lat(g)), where feature_lat is the label point's latitude. merc_scale clamps only at ±85°, so a feature whose label point is below 85° uses that lower latitude's scale, even when its vertices extend beyond 85.05°. The notice says the scale is 85°'s, which is wrong for these features. The real scale is smaller, so the shortfall is larger than the notice implies.

Infinite latitude is treated as the pole here, not as "no place". c.y.clamp(-90.0, 90.0) turns an infinite latitude into 90°, so the distance is finite, nearest_on_ground does not skip the segment, and the cut can land on a segment that ends at an infinite latitude as if it ended at the North Pole. The rest of this PR treats a vertex with an infinite coordinate as having no place: plane_at skips such edges, polar_transform leaves the vertex where it was, and the move/rotate/scale tests check that an infinite latitude stays to the bit. Split should follow the same rule. Confidence about 55%: I traced this from the code and haven't run a case with an infinite latitude.

Suggested fix: give such a vertex a NaN distance, so the segment is passed over like one missing a coordinate. Also add a split test with an infinite latitude on the line, next to a_split_passes_over_a_segment_missing_a_coordinate.

Code review

I read the whole 3,500-line diff against the base-branch AGENTS.md. I also checked the source on disk for panics in non-test code, the Session::warn path, the translation rule, and the geometry helpers the new code calls. I could not build or run the tests, so everything below comes from reading the code.

Bugs

  • Split treats an infinite latitude as the pole, not as "no place" (crates/engine/src/cmd/design.rs:1102, posted inline). c.y.clamp(-90.0, 90.0) turns an infinite latitude into 90°. The segment is then searched as if it ended at the North Pole. The PR's own rule treats such a vertex as having no place. Confidence about 55%. The suggestion makes these segments pass over, like ones missing a coordinate, and asks for a regression test.

Security

  • None found. The new loops are bounded: the split budget, the centre-sampling budget, the dangle check's work limit and POLAR_PIECES_MAX all cap the work. I found no new unwrap, expect or panic! in non-test code.

Performance

  • None found beyond the budgets above.

Quality

  • Nit: the move_features notice says "missing a coordinate", but it also counts infinite coordinates. The wording is slightly off. Left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • None found. The new engine messages are not wrapped in tl!, matching the existing engine commands, and the diff adds no dependencies or assets.

Checked and found consistent

  • Within ±85.05° the edits keep the old Web Mercator path. The new lonlat_to_plane and plane_to_lonlat round-trip. The turn direction in ground_move matches the rotate sign.
  • The move grouping through shared vertices, polar_transform placement, the split budget and "left whole" notices, dangles going coarse and reporting an incomplete check, the rhumb-area cut at ±85.05°, and the Simplify and KDE notices all read correctly.

Prior reviews

  • I left 6 earlier concerns alone because they are still open and unanswered, and the code they point at has not changed: the two-turn Reach::shifts search, the latitude clamp past ±90° in lonlat_to_plane, the silent budget exhaustion in plane_at, rotate and scale not grouping shared corners, the Simplify notice wording, and the in-band dangle tolerance (the author declined it).
  • I did not re-post 3 earlier concerns the author answered and the code now reflects: the missing-coordinate notice, the Tabulate percentage notice, and the KDE note wording.

Nitpick Add a partial-budget case to the center-budget test.

1943-1947: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a partial-budget case to the center-budget test.

The test covers only a full budget and a zero budget. Neither detects a guard that spends a remainder smaller than an edge's cost. With 100 steps left, an edge that needs 340 should take one step. A regression that spends the whole remainder would pass the current test. The zero-budget case cannot catch overspending, because saturating_sub hides it. Add a case with budget = 100 and assert the budget falls to 90.

The UTM block checks only the rejected count and the absence of "85.05°". A regression that admits (15°, 0°) and drops one of the two nearby points keeps the count at one, so the test still passes. Assert the accepted samples or the output raster extent so this swap fails the test.

Strengthen the kernelDensity UTM test so it verifies which point is excluded,
not just the rejected count and absence of “85.05°”. Use the returned accepted
samples or raster extent to confirm that (15°, 0°) is included and the intended
out-of-range point is excluded, while preserving the existing count check.

Reject or bound longitudes so Split does not skip interior turns.

A GeoJSON line with a longitude span near 368,640° passes import unchanged. Split samples it at one point per full turn, so every sample lands at the same longitude. The search then returns the line's end, and Split refuses with "select a line to split (away from its ends)" even though a point about 27 m away exists. Validate longitude range at import, or sample each turn of a long polar segment.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/cmd/design.rs around lines 1229 - 1230:
Update the segment sampling logic around `span` and `pieces` so `Split` does not
miss interior locations on long polar segments whose longitude spans multiple
turns. Ensure samples cover distinct interior positions across the segment, or
establish and enforce a valid longitude bound during import; preserve existing
behavior for ordinary segments.

…, and names the scale it uses (opengeos#1033)

Points aren't simplified, so a point beyond 85.05° is no longer counted; and the tolerance is taken at the scale of the feature's middle (its label point's latitude, at most 85°), not always 85°'s, as the notice and the user guide now say.
… latitude (opengeos#1033)

Split clamped an infinite latitude to ±90° and searched the segment as if it ran to the pole. Such a vertex is no place, as in Move, Rotate and Scale: it no longer sends the split to the ground, gives no distance, and a segment to it is passed over.

On the latest review's Split finding (design.rs, the c.y.clamp(-90.0, 90.0) in the vertex distances): fixed in def2321. A vertex with an infinite latitude is no place, as in Move, Rotate and Scale: it no longer sends the split to the ground, gives no distance, and a segment to it is passed over rather than run to the pole. a_split_passes_over_a_segment_to_an_infinite_latitude cuts a line along 88°N that ends at such a vertex at its corner on 88°N, not at 89.5°N on the segment "to the pole". Current main is merged in too.

and latitude between them, so long edges bend, the more so the nearer the pole one end is than
the other, and far less for moves north–south than east–west: an edge from 87° to 89° bends
333 m for each kilometer moved east; one from 89.5° to 89.99°, about 12 m for each meter, and
nearly 10 km for a 1 km move. Add vertices along them first to keep their shape. A moved

These two figures can't both hold. "About 12 m for each meter" moved east is 12 km of bend for a 1 km move, not "nearly 10 km". The PR description repeats the same pair. Please take both from one measurement and state one consistent pair. Confidence about 75%: I haven't run this case, so I can't say which figure is right.

Code review

I read the full diff (about 3,500 added lines across 13 files), the prior review threads, and the surrounding code for the changed paths. I did not build or run the tests, so everything below comes from reading the code. The new code I checked has no panicking calls outside test code, no unsafe, and no new I/O surface.

Bugs

Security

  • Nothing found. The new inputs are numeric, and the new searches are bounded by work limits (MAX_WORK, CENTER_STEPS_TOTAL, SPLIT_STEPS_TOTAL, POLAR_PIECES_MAX). Confidence high.

Performance

  • Nothing material. The dangle grid, the polar end scan and the union-find in move_planes stay near-linear under those budgets. Confidence medium-high.

Quality

  • docs/user-guide/editing.md lines 54–55 (also in the PR description): "about 12 m for each meter" and "nearly 10 km for a 1 km move" contradict each other. Posted inline. Confidence about 75%.
  • Grouped nits, for the release quality pass: move_features is also used by rotate and scale, so the name is misleading. Several split and dangle tests assert exact work counts tied to internal constants, which makes them brittle. Confidence high that these are nits.

AGENTS.md

  • Added non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic!, unreachable!, todo! or unsafe. Test-only panics are fine.
  • Two silent approximations remain and are already raised (see below): the center budget in plane_at and the latitude clamp in lonlat_to_plane.
  • Wasm and layering look fine from the diff. Confidence medium-high.

Earlier concerns

  • I left 6 unanswered concerns alone because they are still present and nothing new was added: topology.rs ~431 (Reach::shifts misses stored longitudes two or more turns away), geom/src/lib.rs ~200 (silent clamp of latitudes past ±90°), design.rs ~612 (silent center budget), design.rs ~650 (rotate and scale don't group shared corners), tools.rs ~8186 (UTM test asserts the count only), and design.rs ~1241 (split can skip interior turns on very long segments).
  • 11 other earlier threads are answered, resolved or outdated. I checked them against the code and they hold.

On the latest review's note that Cut Polygon, Reshape and Trace (sketch_edit.rs) still project through the clamped lonlat_to_merc: right, and as it says, that's main's code, which this PR doesn't touch. I'll take those tools onto the analysis plane in a follow-up PR under #1033, along with the other follow-ups raised on #1347 (Simplify's per-vertex tolerance) and #1349 (a notice for latitudes past ±90°).
