Part of #1252, step 2: Resample and band math on several cores.

What

Resampling to a target grid and band math now make their rows on several cores on the desktop. The output is the same, bit for bit, as on one thread.

Measured in a release build on a Xeon Silver 4114 (40 threads), on 4,000 × 4,000 rasters:

Run 1 thread (the loop on main) 16 threads
Resample onto a grid in EPSG:2056 (every cell projected) 8.95 s 0.82 s
NDVI band math on 4 bands 0.56 s 0.09 s

The commands that run them get the speed-up: Raster Functions (raster.function: resample to a target, NDVI, band math), Change Detection, the Suitability Modeler's alignment, and a data cube's grids (cube.rs).

New for both: they honour Cancel and report progress by row inside a tool run. Before, they did neither.

How

Tests

  • band_math_and_per_cell_on_several_threads_are_on_one: a 173 × 61 raster of three bands (rows that don't split evenly), with no-data and NaN cells. Two band-math expressions, including ones that come out non-finite, and a per-cell function that sometimes gives none or divides by zero. Run on 2, 7 and 16 threads and compared bit for bit with one thread.
  • The resample, change detection and band math tests pass unchanged.
  • cargo xtask ci passes locally (fmt, clippy, tests, layers), apart from two tests that fail only on this machine (GDAL and a damaged-Shapefile fixture).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Raster calculations, band math, and terrain processing now use row-parallel processing where applicable.
  • Tests
    • Added checks that parallel and single-thread processing produce identical results for raster and terrain operations.

…es (opengeos#1252)

Each cell of `per_cell` (which Resample to a target grid runs, projecting every cell) and of
`band_math` writes only itself, so their rows go on parallel::for_each_row: the same cells, bit
for bit (band_math_and_per_cell_on_several_threads_are_on_one). A caller of per_cell gives a
cell's cost for the threshold. Both now honour Cancel and report progress by row.

A 4,000 × 4,000 raster resampled onto a grid in EPSG:2056: 8.95 s on one thread, 0.82 s on 16.
NDVI on a 4-band 4,000 × 4,000 raster: 0.56 s, 0.09 s.

Walkthrough

Raster cell processing and band math now evaluate rows in parallel. Terrain fallback and resampling use the updated per-cell interface. Tests compare parallel and single-thread results bit-for-bit across several thread counts.

Changes: Raster parallelism

Layer / File(s) Summary
Per-cell processing and callers
crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs
per_cell now allocates no-data-filled output and processes rows in parallel based on estimated work. Terrain fallback and resampling use the updated interface, with resampling assigned a cost estimate of 10 per cell.
Parallel band math
crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs
band_math now evaluates rows in parallel with a separate band-value buffer per worker. Tests compare parallel and single-thread results bit-for-bit across thread counts, including no-data and non-finite values.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 5befd

The parallel raster changes have no established merge-blocking defect. Adding the suggested valid-output assertion would strengthen the parity test; merging remains reasonable after normal checks.

Bugs

  • Progress counter restarts per call. per_cell_on and band_math_on call control::begin(h) every time, so loops that resample once per slice or band (cube.rs:128, workflows.rs:588) show 0→100% again for each one, and the cancel message reports the last slice's row. Posted inline on rasterops.rs:82. Confidence: about 50%; I did not run the UI.
  • No bugs found in the threaded paths. Output rows are written in place, so the result should match the single-threaded run. per_cell's Sync bound holds: Transformer is cached on Raster and only read. Cancellation propagates through ? and converts to String via From<Cancelled>. for_each_row returns control::check() at the end, so a cancel that arrives after the last row still returns an error. That is existing behaviour.

Security

  • None found. The diff is internal arithmetic; there is no new input parsing and no unwrap/expect/unsafe in non-test code.

Performance

  • None found. threads_for_rows gets the work estimate, the caps on threads and rows apply, and the output buffer is allocated once.

Quality (nits, grouped; left for the release quality pass per AGENTS.md)

  • band_math_on, rasterops.rs:218: the inner if let Some(slot) shadows the outer slot (the output cell, used again at line 223). It is correct, but a reader can easily misread it. Renaming the inner binding to bv would make it clearer.
  • per_cell_on line 78 and band_math_on line 197: the if w == 0 early return is what stops chunks_mut(0) from panicking. Raster::new already rejects zero-size rasters, so this is defensive. A one-line comment saying so would help.

Tests (not required by AGENTS.md; mention only)

  • The new determinism test covers the thread counts and no-data/NaN cases well.
  • Nothing tests the new Cancel behaviour of band_math or resample_to, which the PR description claims. A small test that cancels mid-run and expects Err("cancelled") would cover it.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant with the rules that apply to these lines: no panics, no unsafe, same output as before, wasm path stays single-threaded through threads_for_rows, and no vendor code. The Sync bound is added to the callers' closures, so no public API changes.

Already raised earlier: none. prior-reviews.json is empty, so I left no earlier concerns alone.

Nitpick Add a valid-value check to the band-math parity test.

1285-1289: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Low value

Add a valid-value check to the band-math parity test.

The band-math loop checks only that each thread count matches the one-thread output. An all-NODATA result would pass. The per-cell block already requires a non-NODATA value, so add the same check to the band-math loop.

Suggested test addition
             let one = band_math_on(Some(1), &r, expr).unwrap();
+            assert!(one.iter().any(|v| *v != NODATA), "{expr}");
             for threads in [2, 7, 16] {

Add a valid-value assertion in the band-math parity test loop, using the
one-thread result to ensure at least one value is not NODATA before comparing
outputs across thread counts. Keep the existing parity checks unchanged.

On the review's nits: the shadowed slot in band_math_on, a comment on the w == 0 early return (chunks_mut(0) would panic; Raster::new already refuses zero sizes), and a Cancel test for band_math / resample_to (the shared for_each_row cancel path is tested in parallel.rs) are left for the release quality pass.
