perf(analysis): the Georeferencer's leave-one-out refits run on several cores (#1252) - #1381
Part of #1252, step 2: the Georeferencer's residuals on several cores.
What
The Georeferencer's leave-one-out check now refits on several cores on the desktop. The report is the same, bit for bit, as on one thread.
The check (georef::assess, run by Control Point Fit, raster.gcpFit) refits the model once for each point switched on, leaving that point out, and measures how far the refit misses it. Measured in a release build on a Xeon Silver 4114 (40 threads):
Model
Points
1 thread (the loop on main)
16 threads
Thin plate spline
250 (its leave-one-out limit)
1.50 s
0.16 s
Third-order polynomial
1,000 (the most points)
0.70 s
0.07 s
Affine
1,000
0.11 s
0.02 s
How
Refits on parallel::try_map_on: each refit is its own. Each thread switches points off in its own copy of them and back on after each refit, so the refits don't depend on how they are shared out. The errors come back in point order, as before.
The threshold counts a fit's work: linear in the points for the polynomial and projective models, cubic for the spline (threads_for_rows, with a thread's copy of the points as its scratch).
The spline's leave-one-out limit (MAX_SPLINE_LEAVE_ONE_OUT, 250 points) is unchanged. It could rise now that the check takes about 0.16 s at that size, but that is a separate choice.
Tests
assess_on_several_threads_is_assess_on_one: 80 points with a small wobble, every fifth switched off, for all six models (similarity, affine, projective, second- and third-order polynomial, spline). Run on 2, 7 and 16 threads and compared with one thread: the whole report.
The existing Georeferencer tests pass unchanged.
cargo xtask ci passes locally (fmt, clippy, tests, layers), apart from two tests that fail only on this machine (GDAL and a damaged-Shapefile fixture).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Performance
Leave-one-out error calculations can now run across multiple threads, reducing analysis time for larger workloads while adapting thread usage to workload and memory requirements.
Reliability
Reports remain bit-for-bit consistent between single-threaded and multi-threaded runs across supported transform types, including when some control points are switched off. Existing leave-one-out limits and reporting are unchanged.
…al cores (opengeos#1252)
assess refits the model once for each point left out, each on its own, so the refits go on
parallel::try_map_on, each thread switching points off in its own copy: the same report, bit for
bit (assess_on_several_threads_is_assess_on_one, every model). The threshold counts a fit as
linear in the points, or cubic for the spline. The check now honours Cancel inside a tool run.
On 16 threads: the spline with 250 points 1.50 s → 0.16 s, the third-order polynomial with
1,000 points 0.70 s → 0.07 s, the affine fit 0.11 s → 0.02 s.
Also, from the review of opengeos#1377: threads_for_scratch and threads_for_rows hold the budget beyond
one thread's scratch, and now say so.
Leave-one-out assessment now computes refits through parallel mapping, using a supplied or selected thread count. A test checks bit-for-bit equality of reports across thread counts. Documentation clarifies the scratch-budget limits for parallel helper functions.
assess delegates to assess_on, which maps leave-one-out refits across threads. Each worker uses a copy of the control points and skips switched-off points. Tests compare reports across thread counts and transform kinds. Parallel helper documentation clarifies scratch-budget limits.

opengeos/RustGIS#1252: Its open item names georeferencer residual assessment, which this change parallelizes.
opengeos/RustGIS#609: The issue includes leave-one-out error in the planned georeferencer work; this change updates how those existing refits are computed.

The change is mergeable with awareness of avoidable thread-start overhead when many control points are disabled. Additional test coverage would protect the existing disabled-point behavior.

A rabbit counts the points in rows, Then sends each refit where it goes. The threads return, their errors neat, Each report matches, bit by beat. The bunny nibbles, pleased and bright, While scratch limits guide the flight.

Bugs: None found. Checked the per-thread rest copy, restoration of on after each refit, error ordering in try_map_on, the ?/From<Cancelled> conversion, overflow on wasm32 (saturating arithmetic throughout), and the single-thread path. Results should match the serial loop.
Security: None found. No unsafe, no unwrap/expect/panic! in non-test code, and no new input-handling paths. MAX_POINTS is still enforced by fit() before the loop runs.
Performance:
The thread-count estimate in georef.rs:212-214 sizes work from points.len(), not the points switched on (used). Off points return immediately, so the estimate is inflated for the spline. This affects only the threshold, not results. Inline comment posted. Confidence: medium.
The MIN_ROW_WORK calibration (16 units per point per refit) is not justified in the code or PR. Low confidence that it matters.
Quality:
parallel.rs:41 doc line is about 122 columns, with an uneven rewrap. Posted as a nit under the quality sweep. Confidence: high.
The /4 in the spline work estimate is an unexplained magic number. Nit.
The test assess_on_several_threads_is_assess_on_one says "bit for bit", but it compares with PartialEq, which is == on f64. It treats -0.0 == 0.0 as equal and fails on NaN. The claim is slightly overstated. Nit, confidence high.
indices: Vec<usize> is allocated only to feed try_map_on. Nit.
AGENTS.md: Compliant. Layering is fine (analysis only). Wasm is handled because threads_for_rows returns 1 on wasm32 and try_map_on then runs inline. No new user-visible text. The hostile-params coverage is via the existing gcp.fit path. The doc fix in parallel.rs matches the code (1 + SCRATCH_BUDGET / scratch_bytes).
Latent, not reachable today (low confidence, no inline comment):
control::begin(n) in assess_on resets the progress counter of any enclosing run. Today gcp_fit runs without a control, so this is a no-op.
The new cancellation path (try_map_on returns Cancelled) is untested. If a future caller runs assess under a control, compare() would turn the cancel into per-kind Err("cancelled") strings, and gcp_fit would then report "the points can't fix any transform". That message would be wrong.
Prior reviews: There were no existing threads, so I left 0 earlier concerns alone.

Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 50addfa to PR head d3b7158).
Assert None for switched-off points in the thread-equivalence test.
The test checks that some leave-one-out entry is Some, and that every thread count matches the one-thread report. Neither check covers switched-off points, although leave_one_out documents None for them (crates/analysis/src/georef.rs:145-146). If the g.on filter at line 222 were removed, a switched-off point could get an error. The thread comparison would still pass, because every run would produce the same values.
Add an assertion that each switched-off point has no leave-one-out error:
Suggested fix
let one = assess_on(Some(1), kind, &points, true).unwrap();
assert!(one.leave_one_out.as_ref().is_some_and(|e| e.iter().any(Option::is_some)), "{kind:?}");
+ for (g, e) in points.iter().zip(one.leave_one_out.as_ref().unwrap()) {+ assert!(g.on || e.is_none(), "{kind:?}");+ }
for threads in [2, 7, 16] {
assert_eq!(assess_on(Some(threads), kind, &points, true).unwrap(), one, "{kind:?}, {threads} threads");
}

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/georef.rs around lines 650 - 654:
Add a check in the thread-equivalence test around assess_on that verifies every
switched-off point has a None leave-one-out entry. Keep the existing assertion
that some entry is Some and the comparisons across thread counts.
