Summary

Adds Invert Color Ramp, as asked in #1355.

  • New command layer.invertRamp: reverses the order of the colors of a Graduated Colors or Unique Values layer's classes (the first class takes the last one's color, and so on).
    • Colors edited by hand travel with the reversal; a polygon fill keeps its own opacity.
    • Applying it twice gives the original back. It is one undo step.
    • On a Stretch raster it switches the existing invert option. Single and Proportional layers are refused with a message.
  • The Symbology pane shows an Invert Color Ramp button on the Color scheme row of Graduated and Unique Values layers. Rasters keep their existing "Invert color scheme" checkbox.
  • The reversal follows the legend's order. A class drawn from a stack of its own (stacked fills on a polygon layer, stacked strokes on a line or point layer), and a repeat of a Unique Values value (which no feature draws), keep their colors and take no part. A notice says how many classes with their own stack were left as they are; a repeated value is left without one.
  • The command says what it could not do, instead of succeeding silently:
    • fewer than two classes showing the scheme, or a graphics layer: an error, and the button is hidden on a graphics layer;
    • classes kept for their own stack: a notice with a count;
    • the layer's own stack, or a Symbol by Expression fill or stroke, drawn over the reversed colors: one notice each;
    • a point class's hand-picked outline travels with its fill.
  • Choosing a color scheme again starts from the scheme's own order; classing again on the same field, ranges and scheme keeps the reversed colors, as it keeps colors edited by hand (the inversion is not stored, so no .rgis change).

No existing command, parameter or project format changes: layer.invertRamp is a new id.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, layers).
  • New test layer_invert_ramp_reverses_the_class_colors: Graduated and Unique reversal, twice is the original, undo, a Single layer and an unknown layer are refused. hostile_params_never_panic covers the new command automatically.
  • Headless ui_shot of the Symbology pane before and after pressing the button (Viridis, Countries by pop_est): the legend and the map go from purple-to-yellow to yellow-to-purple.
  • Tests for each notice and error above, in both directions (the notice appears, and a clean layer gets none).
  • Not tried with a real LiDAR file (the layer in the issue): a LiDAR layer is read as point features, so a Graduated style on it takes this path.

UI evidence

New button, after only: the Symbology pane with the button on the Color scheme row, and the map and legend after pressing it. The screenshot is added in a comment below.

Closes #1355

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added an Invert Color Ramp option for Graduated Colors and Unique Values renderers. It reverses class colors while keeping edited colors with their classes and polygon fill opacity in place.
    • Classes with their own stacked fills or strokes remain unchanged; a notice reports how many were unaffected. A notice also warns when layer-wide stacks may obscure reversed colors.
    • Inverting twice restores the original order. Stretch raster layers toggle their existing invert-color-scheme setting; graphics layers have no ramp to invert and show a notice.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the cartography guide with details on inverting color ramps.

…lasses (opengeos#1355)

`layer.invertRamp` reverses the order of the colors of a Graduated Colors or Unique Values
layer's classes: the first class takes the last one's color, and so on. Colors edited by hand
travel with the reversal, a polygon fill keeps its own opacity, and applying it twice gives the
original back. On a Stretch raster it switches the existing invert option. Single and
Proportional layers have no color scheme to invert and are refused.

The Symbology pane shows an Invert Color Ramp button on the Color scheme row of Graduated and
Unique Values layers. No existing command, parameter or project format changes.

Changes: Color ramp inversion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Raster and class ramp behavior
crates/map/src/raster.rs, crates/map/src/symbology.rs
RasterStyle::invert_ramp toggles inversion for Stretch renderers. Renderer::reverse_ramp reverses eligible Unique Values and Graduated class colors. It preserves polygon fill opacity and leaves classes with fully coloring stacks unchanged.
Inversion command and validation
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The layer.invertRamp command applies raster or vector inversion and reports unsupported layers and stacks that keep or obscure colors. Tests cover supported and unsupported layers, color reversal, preserved styling, and command notices.
Symbology control and documentation
crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, docs/user-guide/cartography.md
The Unique Values and Graduated pickers show an Invert Color Ramp button. The guide describes vector class reversal, stack behavior, and Stretch raster inversion.

Bugs

  • Classes with their own stacked fills or strokes are not reversed (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1565, confidence ~80%). reverse_ramp swaps only the symbol colours. Per-class class_fills, class_strokes, other_fills and other_strokes keep their old colours and positions, and Layer::style_and_fills draws those stacks instead of the layer-level ones. For those classes the inversion does nothing, and the command still returns Ok without a notice. This contradicts the PR's "colours edited by hand travel with the reversal" and the matching line in docs/user-guide/cartography.md. Inline comment posted.

Security

  • None found. The new command takes only a layer id, and hostile_params_never_panic covers it.

Performance

  • None found. The reversal is O(n) over the classes.

Quality

  • Minor test gaps, grouped here: layer_invert_ramp_reverses_the_class_colors does not cover a polygon's kept opacity, hand-edited colours travelling, the Stretch raster path, or the refusal message for Single and Stretch. The PR body claims the first two. Per AGENTS.md these can wait for the release quality pass.
  • ui.small_button results are discarded with let _ = app.run(...). This follows the existing pattern in the same pane, and the button only shows on classed layers, so I'm not raising it.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The new strings use tl!, the new command has no unwrap or panic, and the new test is confined to the test module.
  • The PR body says the screenshot is "added in a comment below." I can't see it from the staged files, so I haven't checked it.

Prior concerns: none. prior-reviews.json lists no threads, so I did not leave any concerns alone.

Nitpick Add a Stretch raster case to the layer.invertRamp test.

25499-25518: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a Stretch raster case to the layer.invertRamp test.

layer_invert_ramp_reverses_the_class_colors runs layer.invertRamp only on the Countries vector layer. The Stretch branch flips the invert flag through invert_ramp. The existing raster tests set invert through raster.symbology and never call the command. A regression in the command's raster branch would not fail any test.

Add a raster case that runs layer.invertRamp on a Stretch raster, checks that invert changed, and checks that a second call restores it.

Commit 561360a from a fork built, but isn't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).

…y are (opengeos#1355)

A class drawn with a stack of fills or strokes of its own (`class_fills`, `class_strokes`, and
`<all other values>`'s) is drawn instead of its symbol, so reversing the symbols' colors can't
reach it, and the command answered Ok without saying so. Those stacks stay where they are, as
moving them would carry a class's widths and patterns to another class, and a notice gives how
many classes were left as they are.

Tests: a hand-edited class color travels to the other end with each fill keeping its own opacity,
and a class with fills of its own keeps them and is reported.

Thanks for the review. Pushed a fix for the stacked fills and strokes: a class with its own stack keeps it (moving it would carry a class's widths and patterns to another class), and the command now says how many classes it left as they are. The docs say so too, and the test covers a hand-edited color, each fill's own opacity and a class with fills of its own.

Bugs

  • Stacked classes shift the visible colours (confidence ~65%). reverse_ramp also permutes classes that have their own fill or stroke stack. Those stacked classes draw from the stack, so their swapped colour is hidden, but the visible classes still move as if it were included. With five classes and class 0 stacked, classes 1–4 show [c3, c2, c1, c0] instead of the reverse of their own [c1..c4]. The notice also says stacked classes "kept their colors", but a polygon outline is still swapped. Inline comment posted at crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1593, with a suggested direction and a test to add.
  • Display order vs stored order (already raised, not re-posted). reverse_ramp reverses classes by index, but the legend shows class_order(). I confirmed this is still in the code, so the existing thread on symbology.rs:1592 still applies.
  • Duplicate Unique values (already raised, not re-posted). Reversing every entry gives colours to duplicate entries that never draw. The existing thread on the same area still applies.
  • Reclass keeps inverted colours (already raised, not re-posted). carry_edits_from treats reversed colours as hand edits when the field and scheme are unchanged, which contradicts cartography.md. I confirmed the code is unchanged, so the existing thread on symbology.rs:1601 still applies.

Security

  • None found. The new code uses get/iter and no indexing, and I found no path that panics on junk parameters.

Performance

  • Nothing worth raising.

Quality

  • Nits, not posted inline, left for the release quality pass:
    • reverse_ramp returns true for an empty Unique or Graduated layer, so the command succeeds and records an undo step for a no-op.
    • Wrapping every ramp_picker call in ui.horizontal also changes the non-invert callers, including the raster picker. The visual change is probably negligible.
    • The stacked-class test asserts only that own is unchanged and that colours differ. It does not check the visible sequence, which is the gap in the first finding.

AGENTS.md

  • Wrapped UI strings in tl!, no new unwrap in non-test code, and the new command is covered by the hostile-params test. I found no violations.
  • Docs and changelog were updated. The doc claim that choosing a scheme again starts from the scheme's order is contradicted by the existing reclass thread.

Already-raised concerns left alone: 3 earlier threads on this PR (the stacked-class concern, which this PR now answers with a notice but which still has the hidden-colour problem above, the display-order and duplicate-value concerns, and the reclass concern). I re-posted none of them, but the first finding above is new evidence on the stacked-class thread.

Add a Stretch raster case to the Invert Color Ramp test.

layer_invert_ramp_reverses_the_class_colors only runs layer.invertRamp on the vector layer Countries. A regression that makes the raster branch a successful no-op would pass the suite. Add a raster case that runs the command on a Stretch layer and asserts that invert changed.

…nd skips what isn't drawn (opengeos#1355)

`reverse_ramp` reversed the classes in the order they are stored. Unique Values lists them in
`class_order` (numbers before text, 9 before 10), so a layer stored as 10, 100, 9 kept its
displayed sequence. It now reverses the colors along the legend.

The reversal takes part only the classes that show their symbol's colors: a repeat of a Unique
Values value (only the first entry draws) and a class drawn from a stack of fills or strokes of
its own stay as they are, so they no longer shift the colors of the classes around them or leak
a swapped outline.

Docs: choosing a color scheme again starts from the scheme's order, but classing again on the
same field, ranges and scheme keeps the reversed colors, as it keeps colors edited by hand.

Tests: the order, a repeated value and a stacked class (map), a class with fills of its own
keeping its colors while the others reverse among themselves, a Stretch raster switching its
invert option and a classified raster being refused (engine).

Pushed a second round after the reviews. The reversal now follows the legend's order (class_order) and takes part only the classes that show their symbol's colors: a repeated Unique Values value and a class with its own fills or strokes keep theirs, so they no longer shift the classes around them. The docs now say that classing again on the same field and scheme keeps the reversed colors (as it keeps hand-edited colors), while choosing a scheme again resets them. New tests cover the legend order, a repeated value, a class with its own stack, a Stretch raster switching its invert option and a classified raster being refused.

Code review

Bugs

  • No new bugs found. I checked the slot selection, the Unique legend order (class_order), duplicate-value handling, the stacked-class exclusion, the Stretch raster path, and that inverting twice restores the original. All of these hold on the code as written.

Security

  • None found. The change adds no parsing or external input beyond the existing layer parameter, which layer_id already validates.

Performance

  • None worth raising. ramp_slots and reverse_ramp are O(n log n) at most, on a class list that is small by nature.

Quality

  • Inline comment on crates/map/src/symbology.rs:175 (confidence ~35%): a hand-picked polygon alpha stays at its old index, while the hue travels. The docs say "colours edited by hand travel", which covers hue only. This is a design question, not a confirmed bug.
  • Nits, left for the release quality pass (AGENTS.md): the invert: bool flag parameter on ramp_picker_with reads poorly at the call sites; reverse_ramp returns Option<usize>, which mixes "no ramp" with "kept count"; the new doc comments use "colour" while the identifiers and UI strings use "color"; and the other symbol of a Unique layer is not reversed, though the docs say the highest class takes the lowest class's colour.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, panic or indexing in the non-test code. The new command is covered by hostile_params_never_panic through the registry.
  • The kept-class notice uses Session::notify with a count, and a test covers both the lossy and clean cases.
  • UI strings are wrapped in tl!. The command id is not translated.
  • No ribbon change, so the ribbon guidelines do not apply.
  • Screenshots: the PR body says the "after" screenshot is in a comment below. I could not see that comment, so I cannot confirm it is attached.

Earlier concerns left alone: 6 threads were already on the PR (stacked fills not reversed, display order, duplicate values, the stacked-class leak, the reclass-versus-docs mismatch, and the test checking only the class_fills keys). The code changed in response to the first four, and the docs now match the reclass behaviour. The test-strength point stands as a quality item. I did not re-raise any of them.

On the opacity question: kept as it is, since the ramp path (layer.ramp) also leaves a polygon fill's opacity with its position. The docs now say so (7168053, docs only).

Two notes on this function (confidence ~40%, mostly quality):

  1. ramp_picker now wraps the "Color scheme" label in ui.horizontal for every caller, including raster panes that never show the button. That is a layout change for those panes, and the PR's screenshots only cover the Graduated and Unique Values case. Please add a before/after of a raster Color scheme row, or confirm the layout is unchanged.
  2. The invert: bool argument makes the call sites ramp_picker_with(app, ui, ramp, t, true) hard to read. Two functions, or a small enum, would be clearer. This can wait for the release quality pass.

The row is only wrapped in ui.horizontal when invert is true; raster panes go through ramp_picker and keep the plain label, so their layout is unchanged. The bool argument is left for the release quality pass.

Bugs

  • Stacked-class exclusion uses the renderer's stacks, not what the geometry draws. ramp_slots skips a class if it has any class_fills or class_strokes entry. For a polygon class with only an outline stack, its symbol fill is still drawn, so that colour is left unreversed. A line class with a class_fills entry (accepted by the project reader) is wrongly skipped. Confidence ~55%. Inline comment posted at crates/map/src/symbology.rs:1577.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • None found.

Quality

  • Empty stacks are treated as kept. ramp_slots uses contains_key, but the renderer ignores empty stacks (fills_in filters them). The current deserializer and setters drop empty entries, so this is latent. Confidence ~30%. Not posted separately.
  • Layout and naming in the UI. ramp_picker now wraps every caller in ui.horizontal, including rasters, and the invert: bool argument is unclear at the call sites. Confidence ~40%. Inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4384, with the bool argument left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Tests both ways. The new test checks the notice for the stacked case only and never asserts that a clean inversion produces none. Confidence ~55%. Inline comment posted at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:25549.
  • Notice scope. The PR description says the notice counts every class left unchanged. The code counts only stacked classes, so repeated Unique Values entries are left without a notice. The description and the code disagree, and the notice wording matches the code. Covered in the same inline comment.

Four of the five existing threads are addressed by the current code or docs, and I did not repost them:

  • Opacity staying with its slot is now documented in cartography.md.
  • Stacked classes are excluded from the reversal.
  • The visible-class leak is fixed by the exclusion.
  • Legend order and repeated values are handled by class_order and the seen set.

The open test-strength point (tests.rs checks only the stack keys, not their contents) is an extra test for code that works. It is left for the release quality pass.

UI evidence: the Symbology pane of a Graduated Colors layer (Countries by pop_est, Viridis). Before, then after pressing Invert Color Ramp (the legend and the map go from purple-to-yellow to yellow-to-purple). Headless ui_shot renders of the branch.

before after

…ack is drawn (opengeos#1355)

A class's own stack replaces its symbol only for the geometry that draws it: a polygon's stacked
fills, a line's or a point's stacked strokes. A polygon's stacked strokes and a line's stacked
fills are not drawn, and an empty stack is no stack (the renderer ignores it), so those classes
now take part in the reversal instead of keeping a color nothing shows.

The Color scheme heading is wrapped in a row only where the Invert Color Ramp button is, so the
raster panes' layout is as it was.

Tests: every combination of stack kind, geometry and empty stack (map); an inversion that leaves
nothing as it was says nothing, and a class's own fills are the same after it (engine).

Pushed a third round. Which stack replaces a class's symbol now follows what the renderer draws (a polygon's own fills; a line's or a point's own strokes, an empty stack counting as none), so a polygon with only stacked strokes still reverses its fill. The Color scheme row is wrapped only where the button is, leaving the raster panes' layout as it was. Tests cover every combination of stack kind, geometry and empty stack, a clean inversion saying nothing, and a class's own fills being the same after it. @coderabbitai review

Code review

No blocking findings. I read the diff and the code it touches: the reversal and its legend order, the duplicate-value rule, the per-geometry rule for which stack replaces a class's symbol, the raster invert option, and the command and UI wiring. I did not build or run the tests.

Bugs

None found. I checked the reversal against the legend order (class_order), the duplicate-value rule (class_in takes the first stored match, and class_order keeps stored order among equal keys, so both agree), and the stack rule against the drawing code in crates/render/src/lib.rs (~L3701-3736). Polygon fills, line strokes and point marks each match ramp_slots. Unsupported renderers and rasters are refused. Non-test code has no indexing or unwrap. Confidence in the core logic: high.

Security

None found. The only new input is the optional layer id, which goes through layer_id.

Performance

None found. The sort and copy work is small and per command.

Quality (nits, confidence 60-70%)

  • docs/user-guide/cartography.md: the sentence "A stack the layer doesn't draw (a polygon's stacked strokes) doesn't count" leaves out a line's stacked fills. Those are also not drawn and also don't count, as the ramp_slots doc comment says. Add that case to the sentence.
  • crates/map/src/symbology.rs (the reverse_ramp doc comment, ~L244-245): one line is much longer than the rest of the comment. Reflow it.
  • Spelling is mixed: the code, the UI string and the PR text say "color", while the docs and test comments say "colour". Pick one for this feature.

AGENTS.md

No violations found. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect or panic. The new notice is one per kind with a count and is tested both ways: a stacked class gives it, and a clean Graduated inversion gives none. UI strings use tl!. Engine notices use format!, as the rest of the engine does. No new assets. Layering holds, since map and engine don't touch egui. layer.invertRamp is a registered command, so hostile_params_never_panic covers it.

Earlier review threads: this PR has 9. I left all 9 alone because they were already raised. Three are outdated and now addressed by the per-geometry ramp_slots rule. The translucent hand-set colour thread is answered by the cartography doc, which now says opacity stays with the position. The raster layout thread is addressed, since callers without the button keep the old layout. The clean-notice and stack-content test threads are addressed by the current tests. The reclass and display-order threads are resolved.

…its color from (opengeos#1355)

A layer of a class's own stack with no color of its own takes the symbol's (`FillLayer::color`,
`LineStroke::color`, a point's marks), so the class still shows its ramp color through it, as a
road's black casing sits over a core that follows the class. Only a stack whose every layer sets
its own color hides the symbol and keeps the class out of the reversal. Before, any drawn stack
did.

Docs: say which stack hides the symbol, and that a layer holding several kinds of geometry is
reversed as its main kind, as choosing a color scheme does.

Tests: a stack of strokes or fills with its own colors (kept), with some (reversed) and with none
(reversed), for a polygon, a line and a point.
…ays what it did (opengeos#1355)

A graphics layer draws each feature in its own style and ignores its renderer, so reversing the
renderer's colors changed nothing and said nothing: the command now refuses it.

`reverse_ramp` says how many classes changed places and how many were kept (`RampReversal`), and
the notice about the layer's own stack, which says the colors were reversed, comes only when some
were: with every class drawn from a stack of its own, or a lone class, none were.

The rule for a stack that hides the symbol's colors (drawn for the geometry, and every layer of it
sets a color of its own) is one function, `stack_hides_symbol`, for a class's own stack and the
layer's.

Tests: a graphics layer is refused; no layer-stack notice when no class changed places; the
reversed and kept counts. Docs: a graphics layer has no color scheme to invert.

Thanks for the last three notes, all checked against the code and fixed in this push. layer.invertRamp now refuses a graphics layer (Layer::symbol ignores its renderer, so the command changed nothing and said nothing); reverse_ramp returns how many classes changed places and how many were kept, and the layer-stack notice, which says the colors were reversed, only comes when some were (not when every class has a stack of its own, or there is a lone class); and the rule for a stack that hides the symbol's colors is one function, stack_hides_symbol, used for a class's own stack and for the layer's. Tests cover each, and the docs mention graphics layers.

Code review

I reviewed the full diff against the current code (layer.rs, symbology.rs, raster.rs, render/lib.rs, lib.rs, panes.rs, the engine's Session::run). I could not compile or run tests: this session has no Bash.

Bugs

  • None new that I could confirm. The reversal permutation is an involution, the render path matches stack_hides_symbol (polygon strokes and line fills are not drawn), and errors from Session::run are already notified, so the UI's let _ = app.run(...) does not drop them silently.

Security

  • None found. The new command takes only a layer id and goes through the existing layer_id lookup.

Performance

  • None worth raising. ramp_slots and class_order run once per click over a class list of at most a few dozen entries.

Quality

  • The Invert button is drawn for Graduated and Unique layers without checking l.graphics, but the command refuses graphics layers, so on those layers the button always produces an error notice. Posted inline on crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:4217 (and it applies equally to line 4254). Confidence about 50%, since I did not confirm that graphics layers can reach these renderers from the pane.

AGENTS.md

  • Tests cover both ways: the stacked case gives the notice, the plain Graduated and Unique cases give none.
  • Strings use tl!, and the command id is new, so nothing existing changes.
  • I found no wasm or layering problems by reading the code.

Already raised earlier (left alone, 8 threads):

  • Hand-set polygon opacity staying at its old position: now documented in cartography.md, so the answer addresses it.
  • Mixed-geometry opacity from the Polyline arm of with_colors_of (thread on symbology.rs:1647): still present, but it matches what apply_ramp already does for mixed layers, and the docs say so.
  • Stacked-class reversal, class order, duplicate Unique values, stroke-only polygon stacks, the layer-wide stack notice, the "reversed" wording when nothing moved, the raster layout change, the duplicated predicate, and the stack-contents assertion: each is either fixed in the current code or covered by a thread that is still open with no new evidence.

Re-check of the old threads: 2 of 10 are unresolved and still apply (the mixed-geometry and graphics-layer items above); 8 are either resolved or addressed by the current code.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, the existing threads, and the render and drawing code the new logic depends on. I did not build or run the tests (no shell here), so the findings below come from reading the code.

Bugs

  • No new confirmed bugs. The earlier crash and silent-change concerns are fixed in this head: graphics layers are refused, a class with its own stack is kept instead of reversed, and the layer-stack notice fires only when classes actually changed places. I checked the claims about which stack is drawn for each geometry against crates/render/src/lib.rs (polygons draw fills, lines draw strokes, polygon strokes are not drawn), and they match.
  • Low confidence (~30%): on a Graduated or Unique layer where only one class is drawn, layer.invertRamp returns Ok with no change and no notice (reverse_ramp returns reversed: 0, kept: 0, and the command ends in Ok(Value::Null)). The pane button still shows, so the press does nothing visible. This drops no data, so it does not break the "never silent" rule, but a short notice or hiding the button for one class would be clearer.

Security

  • None found. Parameters go through layer_id and ok_or, and there is no unsafe.

Performance

  • None material. Each inversion is linear in the class count, with one HashSet per call.

Quality

  • Nothing new beyond the earlier threads. The duplicated stack predicate is now shared through stack_hides_symbol.

AGENTS.md

  • Checked and compliant: no unwrap, expect, panic or indexing in non-test code (the diff uses get, let ... else and checked_sub); the notices go through Session::notify with one per kind; the new pane strings use tl!; no new dependencies; no std::time; the docs are updated.
  • Not verified: the before/after screenshots that the PR body says are in a comment. They are not in the diff.

Earlier concerns

  • 16 review threads already exist on this PR. I did not re-post any of them.
  • Several are answered by the current code: the graphics guard, the shared predicate, the notice gate, the kept-class handling, and the clean-input assertion.
  • Three still stand with no new evidence: the hand-set polygon opacity question, the opacity change on polygon classes in a mixed polyline layer, and the notice wording for repeated Unique values.
  • I posted no inline comments: the only new item is low confidence.

Code review

Bugs

  • None new. The prior threads on this PR were checked against the current code. The graphics-layer guard, the stacked-class handling, the layer-wide stack notice, and the Unique duplicate handling are all in place and match what the renderer draws. Re-checked: polygons draw only fills, strokes are never drawn for polygons, and Unique duplicates resolve to the first stored entry, which is the first entry class_order visits.

Security

  • None found. The command takes no free-form input beyond the layer id.

Performance

  • None found.

Quality

  • Possibly silent no-op (confidence ~40%): a single-class or one-drawn-value layer returns Ok with no change and no notice. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:196. A naive guard would also fire on Stretch raster inversions, which return 0/0, so the comment says to exclude the raster path.
  • Test gap (confidence ~30%): no test covers undo or the notice path for a Stretch raster inversion, nor a Unique layer with an expression renderer. This is a test-coverage point and can wait for the release quality pass.
  • Spelling is mixed: code, docs and tests say "colour" in some places and "color" in others, while UI and command names use "color". Left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Graphics-layer and "never silent" rules: the stacked-class, layer-stack and graphics-layer cases now produce notices or errors, and tests cover both the notice and the clean case. Compliant.
  • Layering: the engine uses format! for notices, matching the existing engine convention. The UI strings use tl!. Compliant.
  • Docs: the command is documented in cartography.md. No generated command reference needs updating.

Prior concerns left alone: 10 earlier threads on this PR were not re-raised. Each is either addressed by the current code or documented as intended behaviour: hand-set polygon opacity (now stated in the docs), the raster layout change (now the else branch is unchanged), the mixed-geometry opacity case (documented), the repeated-value and stacked-class handling, the Unique class_order concern, and the stack-content test assertion.

Add a one-class case to the invert command test.

The engine test covers Single rejection and multi-class reversal. It does not invert a one-class Graduated or Unique layer. The map test at crates/map/src/symbology.rs:4124 checks only the returned counts for a lone Unique class. It does not check the class colors, and it has no Graduated case.

Add an engine test that inverts a one-class layer. It should assert that the color list is unchanged and that no notice is posted. This matches the existing "nothing was left as it was, so nothing is said" check for the multi-class path.

Gate the layer-stack notice on classes that draw from the layer's stack.

The notice checks only whether the layer-wide stack hides the symbol and whether any class was reversed. It does not check whether a reversed class falls back to the layer-wide stack. If every reversed class has its own fill stack with color: null, the notice says the layer's fills hide the reversed colors, but those fills are not drawn for any reversed class. Count the reversed classes that have no stack of their own, and show the notice only when that count is above zero.

Code review

Bugs: None found. I read the full diff, the changed call sites, and the render path that decides which stacks are drawn (crates/render/src/lib.rs ~L3702-3709). I traced the reversal by hand against the reverse_ramp_follows_the_legend test (stored 10/100/9 becomes display 9/10/100) and confirmed the double-inversion round trip. Stack rules agree across ramp_slots, fills_in/strokes_in (empty stacks count as no stack), and render's polygon-only fill drawing. Unique duplicates resolve correctly because class_order is a stable sort, so the first display entry of a value is the first stored one, which is the entry class_in's position draws. Confidence: high.

Security: None found. No new dependencies, no file or network access, and no unchecked input in the new command (layer_id, get/checked_sub indexing).

Performance: None found. The reversal is O(n log n) over the classes and runs once per command.

Quality: One low-confidence note, no inline comment (~25%): in wireframe view (ctx.wireframe), polygon stacked fills are not drawn at all, so the kept-class and layer-stack notices describe fills that wireframe does not show. The outline reversal is still correct, so this is probably acceptable.

AGENTS.md: Compliant as far as I checked.

  • Refusals and no-op cases return errors, which app.run notifies (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs ~L1836-1842), so the button's ignored result is safe.
  • Engine notices use format!, matching the rest of layer.rs.
  • UI labels use tl!.
  • Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, or panic.
  • The pane gates the button with !l.graphics, and rasters keep the plain label.

Earlier concerns: I left all 18 existing review threads alone and did not re-post any. Those still present (the bool argument in ramp_picker_with, the duplicated stack predicate, and the mixed-geometry opacity case) are already deferred to the release quality pass. The rest are addressed in the code I read.

Not verified: I did not compile or run the tests; this review is by reading.

Bug (confidence ~55%): a hand-set point outline doesn't travel with the reversal.

with_colors_of moves only the fill for points. layer.classStyle applies outline to stroke for every geometry (ClassStyle::outline, set_class_style), so a point class with a hand-picked outline keeps that outline at its old position while its fill moves. The docs say "Colours edited by hand travel with the reversal", and this is the case where that doesn't hold.

Point stroke is never set by with_fill or apply_ramp, so the ramp doesn't own it, and default point outlines are all white. Swapping the stroke too therefore only moves outlines the user set, and changes nothing else:

Suggested change
_ => self.fill = src.fill,
_ => {
self.fill = src.fill;
self.stroke = src.stroke;
}

If the point outline is meant to stay with the slot, say so in the doc comment and in cartography.md instead. Either way the existing tests still hold, since they check fills only. A test with a point class outline set would pin the choice.

Bugs

  • crates/map/src/symbology.rs:178: a point class's hand-set outline (layer.classStyle outline) stays at its old position while its fill moves, so "colours edited by hand travel with the reversal" doesn't hold for points. Inline comment posted with a suggestion. Confidence ~55%.
  • crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:178-180: when every reversible class is kept for its own stack (reversed == 0, kept > 0), the command returns Ok, records an undo step, and changes nothing. The no-class case returns an error instead. The two cases are inconsistent, and the doc's "says so instead of succeeding" only holds for the second. Low severity, confidence ~40%.

Security

  • None found. The new command takes only a layer id, and the hostile-params coverage applies to it.

Performance

  • None worth raising. The per-call work is a few small vectors and one sort of the class list.

Quality

  • Nothing new beyond the open threads below. The notice text uses "colors" while the docs and code comments use "colour". That is a spelling mix, not a defect.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code. Errors and notices go through Session::notify, with one notice per kind and a count. Both ways are tested. The button's errors are surfaced by RustGisApp::run. Wasm is unaffected, and no assets or dependencies are added. The UI strings use tl!.
  • I did not verify the "UI evidence" screenshot, since it lives in a PR comment outside the staged files.

Prior reviews
I checked pr-context/prior-reviews.json. Of its 18 threads, all are resolved, outdated, or answered by the author. I left those alone, including the release-quality-pass items on the bool argument and the duplicated stack rule. I found no reason to re-raise any of them.

Bug (confidence ~55%): a Symbol by Expression colour can hide the reversal, with no notice.

The renderer draws through Layer::styler, and SymbolBy::apply (crates/map/src/symbol_by.rs ~L117-134) overwrites sym.fill and sym.stroke with the expression's colour for each feature where it gives one. So if the layer has symbol_by.fill (or stroke) set, the reversed class colours are replaced at draw time wherever that expression yields a colour. layer.invertRamp then returns Ok with no notice and little or no visible change, which breaks the "never silent" rule.

Suggested direction: read the flag before the layer is borrowed mutably, then notify once, alongside the existing notices:

let by_expression = l.symbol_by.fill.is_some() || l.symbol_by.stroke.is_some();
// ...after the existing notices, for a non-raster layer:
if by_expression && !raster && done.reversed > 0 {
    s.notify("the layer's Symbol by Expression sets some features' colors, so the reversal shows only where it gives none", false);
}

Also add a test with a layer.symbolBy fill expression, asserting the notice. layer.ramp already has this overlap, so the fix may belong with it, but the new command is the one that claims the change.

Code review

Bugs

  • Symbol by Expression colours can hide the reversal, with no notice (confidence ~55%). SymbolBy::apply overwrites fill and stroke per feature at render time, so layer.invertRamp can return Ok with little visible change. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:164, with a suggested direction and a test to add.

No other correctness problems found. I checked the following against the source:

  • Unique legend order (class_order, a stable permutation) matches the first-match draw rule for repeated values.
  • Stacks replace the symbol only when non-empty and fully coloured, which matches the fills_in/strokes_in fallbacks.
  • Polygon outline stacks are not drawn, and a polygon's fills replace the symbol fill only when non-empty.
  • The RampReversal counts and the notices match the code. The graphics-layer refusal and the !l.graphics gate on the pane buttons are in place.
  • Nothing in the new code panics or uses unwrap outside tests.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • None found. The per-call work is a small HashSet and a clone of a few symbols.

Quality

  • Nothing new that needs a comment. The docs state that re-classing on the same field keeps the reversed colours, but I found no test for that claim in the diff. Under AGENTS.md this is a test gap for working code, so it can wait for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on reviewed points: tl! is used for the new UI text, the command has no dialogs, there are no new dependencies, and the new command is covered by hostile_params_never_panic.
  • I did not compile or run the tests, because I have no build tool in this session.

Prior threads

  • I left 13 earlier concerns alone. They are resolved, outdated and fixed, or answered with evidence that holds, or they are quality points deferred to the release pass.
  • The author's answer on ramp_picker's layout holds: the ui.horizontal wrapper applies only when invert is true.
  • The bool argument and the duplicated stack predicate are deferred quality points, so I did not repeat them.

Code review

Bugs: none confirmed. I traced the reversal, undo, and refusal paths against the code and the new tests:

  • Reversal along legend order: the 10/100/9 case, the repeated-value case, and the kept-class case all produce the expected colours.
  • Twice gives the original back, and one undo reverts one inversion.
  • Every refusal (single class, graphics layer, Single or Proportional renderer) returns before any colour changes.
  • A Stretch raster's colour lookup table is built per render from invert, so the in-place flip isn't stale.
  • The pane's let _ = app.run(...) is safe because app.run notifies on every Err.
  • Reclassing after an inversion keeps the reversed colours, as the docs say.

Confidence: about 85%. I could not compile or run cargo xtask ci in this session (no shell), so build and test status is unverified.

Security: none found. The change adds no input parsing, file access, or secrets handling.

Performance: none found. Each command is O(classes), with one HashSet pass.

Quality:

  • Symbol::with_colors_of in crates/map/src/symbology.rs has identical GeometryType::Polyline and _ arms; they could merge. Confidence 90%. Per AGENTS.md this is a quality point for the release quality pass, so I did not post it inline.
  • The invert: bool argument of ramp_picker_with was raised in an earlier thread and is left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md: no violations found in the changed code.

  • No unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe in non-test code.
  • The new command uses layer_id(p)? and ok_or.
  • The notices are reported through Session::notify, one per kind with a count.
  • The new strings are wrapped in tl!.
  • The docs cover the new behaviour.
  • I could not verify the PR body's claim that the UI screenshot is in a later comment, because the staged context doesn't include it.

Earlier review threads: I checked all 20 threads and left every one alone. None needed re-raising: 13 are resolved or outdated with the fix in the current code, one was withdrawn, and the rest are quality items the author deferred to the release quality pass.

Inline comments: none posted, because no finding reached the bar for a defect.

Code review

I read the full diff, all 19 earlier review threads, and the surrounding code in crates/map/src/symbology.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, the pane code in crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, and the engine's run path. This session has no shell, so I did not build, clippy, or run the tests. Everything below is from reading the code, and CI remains the check for compilation and tests.

Bugs: No new findings. The correctness concerns from earlier threads (graphics layers, Symbol by Expression, stacked classes being permuted, point outlines, the one-class case, layer-stack notice gating) are handled in the current code. I checked the duplicate Unique value case against the renderer's draw order: Renderer::Unique draws the first stored entry, and class_order keeps duplicates in stored order, so the reversal and the drawing pick the same entry. The "nothing to invert" refusal runs after reverse_ramp has already written the colors back, but with one drawn class that write is a self-swap, so nothing changes. Confidence: high.

Security: No findings. The only new input is the existing layer id and the new command's empty params.

Performance: No findings. The reversal is one pass over the classes; ramp_slots allocates a small HashSet per call, which is negligible.

Quality: Nothing that needs a change now. The bool argument on ramp_picker_with and the notice wording were already raised and deferred to the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md:

  • No unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe in non-test code. Test code uses unwrap, as the existing tests do.
  • Notices go through Session::notify. Each lossy path has a test that checks both the notice and the clean case.
  • tl! is used for the new button and its hover text. Engine notices use format! because i18n lives in ui-egui.
  • No new dependency. Layering holds: map and engine do not depend on egui.
  • The pane layout change applies only to Graduated and Unique layers. Raster panes keep the plain label.
  • Low confidence (about 40%): the Symbol by Expression and layer-stack notices carry no count, while AGENTS asks for "one notice per kind with a count". The rule may be meant for dropped items rather than a condition, so I did not post this inline.

No inline comments were posted, because nothing new met the bar. I left all 19 earlier threads alone: their concerns are either fixed in the current code or are deferred quality points.

Code review

Verdict: I found no bugs, security issues or AGENTS.md violations in the changed lines. Nothing new survived verification, so I posted no inline comments.

Bugs

  • None found. I checked:
    • Reversal order: ramp_slots follows class_order(), and class_of draws the first Unique Values entry for a repeated value, so the "first occurrence only" rule matches what is drawn.
    • Stack rules: the geometry-specific stack rule (polygon fills; line/point strokes) matches what Layer::style_and_fills, fills_in and strokes_in read, including empty stacks falling back to the layer's.
    • Error paths: every refusal happens before any mutation. A single-class reversal writes back the same colours.
    • Command guards: graphics layers, Single and Proportional renderers, and rasters are handled.
    • Undo, hostile params, notices: undo is one step, the new command is covered by hostile_params_never_panic, and app.run surfaces command errors. The Symbol by Expression and layer-stack notices are present in the code.
  • Confidence: high.

Security

  • None found. The change adds no parsing, file or network input. Command parameters are read through layer_id and get-style access.
  • Confidence: high.

Performance

  • None found. The work is one sort over the classes plus a HashSet pass, which is negligible at class counts of 12 or fewer.
  • Confidence: high.

Quality

  • Minor, deferred to the release quality pass (not posted):
    • The replaced and bare closures in Renderer::ramp_slots are hard to read. Named helpers or a small struct in place of the anonymous (Vec<usize>, usize, usize) tuple would read better.
    • The Polyline arm of with_colors_of has no direct test. Stroke and fill travel for lines is covered only indirectly.
  • Confidence: about 50%.

AGENTS.md

  • None found. Interface text uses tl!, the command id is untranslated, the new command has no new assets, and no new dependency was added. The Rust let-chains and Option::is_none_or used in the tests and code fit the repo's rust-version = "1.90".
  • Confidence: high.

Prior reviews

  • 20 review threads were already on this PR. I did not re-raise any of them.
  • One thread stays open: the point-outline swap in with_colors_of (outdated). I left it alone because the code comment now documents that a point's outline is a hand-picked colour that travels with its class.

Change size

Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 2099dc8 to PR head 561360a). The tree was not truncated.

Hi @giswqs, #1387 is ready for another look.

  • CodeRabbit's open point (the layer-stack notice) is fixed, plus two more found by the review bot: a point's hand-set outline now travels with its fill, and Invert Color Ramp says when Symbol by Expression colors cover the reversal. Each has a test; cargo xtask ci passes locally.
  • The one red CI job is rustgis-tiles cache::tests::fetches_through_the_fetcher_once, which this PR doesn't touch and which has failed on other PRs too. I can't re-run it (no admin rights), so could you re-run it?
  • The remaining CHANGES_REQUESTED is CodeRabbit's older review of an earlier commit; could you dismiss it?
