Part of #1291 step 2.

Three memory limits that were still fixed now follow the computer's memory on the desktop, as the raster limits do since #1372. Each one plans for a share of the memory (the smaller of physical memory and a container's limit), between its old fixed value and a ceiling. The fixed value stays the floor, and stays the browser's limit.

Limit Fixed (floor; the browser's) Desktop Ceiling
Buffer's and Select Layer By Location's retained storage (bufferBytes) 512 MiB (128 MiB in the browser) a quarter of memory 8 GiB
Kernel Density's output cells (densityCells) 16 million a quarter of memory at 16 bytes a cell 512 million (PIXELS_CEILING)
The scratch a tool's threads take together, beyond one thread's (threadScratchBytes) 256 MiB a sixteenth of memory, on top of the quarter 4 GiB

Details

  • Buffer: the budget charged by BufferStorage is unchanged; only the value passed in at the two tool entry points (buffer, select_by_location) now comes from max_buffer_bytes(). When a run runs out of it, the error now names this computer's budget, so a run that passes on a larger machine says why it was refused here. This builds on the Buffer storage rework by Mavrick-F.
  • Kernel Density: MAX_DENSITY_CELLS is renamed DENSITY_CELLS_FLOOR, and max_density_cells() gives the limit. At its peak a run holds the f64 sums and the f32 output (12 bytes a cell), then writes the GeoTIFF; 16 bytes a cell leaves room for that. At the ceiling the output is 2 GiB, within classic TIFF's 4 GiB, and the limit never exceeds max_pixels() or max_samples(), so the result reads back whole. The error now names the limit.
  • Thread scratch: SCRATCH_BUDGET becomes parallel::scratch_budget(). It only decides how many threads a tool with per-thread scratch runs on (Kriging, IDW, deep-learning classify, the Georeferencer, Zonal Statistics). The output is the same on any number of threads.
  • gp.env reports the three in limits, and the analysis guide's limits table and Buffer section describe them.

Tests

Buffer's and Select Layer By Location's tests still pass fixed limits in. buffer_budget_follows_the_computer_and_is_named checks the budget's range and that the error names it while other errors pass through unchanged. The engine's gp.env test checks that the three new limits are never below their floors.

Still left in step 2: topology's MAX_WORK, which waits for #1347–#1349.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Analysis limits for density grids, buffers, and parallel processing now scale with available desktop memory, subject to minimum and maximum bounds.
    • Environment information now reports density-cell, buffer, and thread scratch-memory limits.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the analysis guide with the new limits and their desktop and browser behavior.

…ds' scratch follow the computer's memory (opengeos#1291 step 2)

On the desktop each now plans for a share of the computer's memory, as
the raster limits do since opengeos#1372, between its fixed value (the floor,
still the browser's) and a ceiling:

- Buffer's and Select Layer By Location's retained-storage budget: a
quarter of memory, 512 MiB to 8 GiB (128 MiB in the browser). Its error
names the budget on this computer.
- Kernel Density's output cells: a quarter of memory at 16 bytes a cell,
16 M to 512 M cells. Its error names the limit.
- The threads' scratch budget: a sixteenth of memory, 256 MiB to 4 GiB.

gp.env reports the three (densityCells, bufferBytes,
threadScratchBytes). Tests keep passing fixed limits in.

Walkthrough

Analysis limits for density grids, retained buffer storage, and thread scratch now scale with physical memory within defined bounds. The environment response reports these limits, and the user guide documents them.

Changes: Analysis memory limits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Density cell limit and public exports
crates/analysis/src/density.rs, crates/analysis/src/lib.rs
The fixed density-cell limit is replaced by a computed limit with a floor and ceiling. Oversized-grid errors report the computed limit. The analysis crate exports the new limit API.
Retained-storage budget
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Buffer and location-based selection use a computed storage budget. Storage-budget errors include the budget in MiB; other errors remain unchanged. The guide describes the desktop budget and browser limit.
Thread scratch budget
crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs
Thread selection uses a computed scratch budget bounded by 256 MiB and 4 GiB. The row-thread test checks against that budget.
Limit reporting
crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
The environment response reports density-cell, buffer-byte, and thread-scratch limits. The engine test checks minimum reported values, and the guide documents the limits. The guide describes the scratch budget as one-sixteenth of desktop memory; the implementation summary describes the helper as using one quarter.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the three memory-based limits in the changeset: Buffer's budget (buffer storage via max_buffer_bytes), Kernel Density's cells (max_density_cells), and the thread scratch budget (scratch_budget). It also names the analysis feature area and the linked step of #1291. It is specific and matches the main change, though it is long at 124 characters and does not name gp.env reporting.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It includes Summary, Testing, UI evidence, and Related issue sections. The Summary explains the three limits, their floors, desktop shares, and ceilings. The Testing section names the new budget test and the gp.env test. The UI evidence section keeps the 'No visible UI change.' line, which matches the template. The Related issue section cites #1291 step 2 in the body, though the template's 'Part of #...' line is not filled in the section itself and the template placeholder was removed. These gaps are minor.

Code review

No correctness or crash bugs found. The three limits are computed correctly from rustgis_data::memory, the floors and browser values are unchanged, and the new gp.env keys are covered by the engine test. Two smaller items are posted inline.

Bugs

  • None found. Checked: scaled clamps, physical() is cached in a OnceLock so calling scratch_budget() per threads_for_rows is cheap, and BufferStorage::reserve grows geometrically within the budget rather than preallocating it. The density ceiling never exceeds max_pixels(), and the 12-bytes-a-cell peak matches the shared f64 and f32 grids. Confidence: high.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • None found. threads_for_rows is called once per tool run, and physical() is read once per process. Confidence: high.

Quality

  • crates/analysis/src/lib.rs:39: import order likely fails cargo fmt --check. Suggestion posted inline. Confidence: about 70%, since I could not run rustfmt.
  • crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:1252: 8 << 30 (and 4 << 30 in parallel.rs:25) silently becomes 0 on wasm32. No runtime effect today because the browser never reads the ceiling, but it is a trap. Suggestion posted inline. Confidence: about 80%.
  • Nits, for the release quality pass: parallel.rs:51-52 doc comment is reflowed to a much longer line than its neighbours; parallel.rs:21-22 "in the browser and at least on the desktop" reads awkwardly; with_budget matches the error by string equality against BUFFER_STORAGE_ERROR, which works but is fragile. The density error text and the scratch ceiling on desktop have no direct tests beyond the memory::scaled unit test.

AGENTS.md

  • Never-crash: no unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe added.
  • Never-silent: the change only raises limits and makes errors name the budget; no data is dropped.
  • Wasm: physical() returns None in the browser, so the browser keeps its fixed limits.
  • Translation: analysis has no i18n convention, so format! for these errors matches the crate.
  • The docs table in docs/user-guide/analysis.md matches the code.

Nitpick Test the budget against detected memory, not only its range.

6656-6656: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Test the budget against detected memory, not only its range.

buffer_budget_follows_the_computer_and_is_named passes when max_buffer_bytes() returns the fixed floor on any machine. The scaled() arithmetic has fixed-value tests in memory.rs, but no test checks that max_buffer_bytes() passes physical() into scaled(). Compare the result with rustgis_data::memory::scaled(rustgis_data::memory::physical(), MAX_BUFFER_BYTES, BUFFER_BYTES_CEILING, 1), or move the computation into a helper that takes Option<u64> and test it with values such as 16 GiB, which should give 4 GiB.

Update the test for max_buffer_bytes so it verifies the budget is derived from
detected memory, not merely within its allowed range. Compare it with the result
of applying scaled to physical() using the existing floor, ceiling, and
multiplier, or extract the calculation into a helper that accepts Option<u64>
and test a 16 GiB input yields 4 GiB.
Nitpick Add an entry-point test for the Buffer and selection budget message.

6657-6659: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Add an entry-point test for the Buffer and selection budget message.

The new test calls with_budget directly. No test calls buffer or select_by_location and checks the storage error text. Removing either map_err(|e| with_budget(e, bytes)) wrapper would leave the suite passing. Add a test that exhausts the budget through each entry point. max_buffer_bytes() is not injectable, so this needs a budget-injection seam or a very large input.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/tools.rs around lines 6657 - 6659:
Extend the tests around buffer and select_by_location to trigger budget
exhaustion through each entry point and verify the storage error text, rather
than testing with_budget alone. Use a controlled budget-injection seam if
available, or an input that reliably exceeds max_buffer_bytes(), without
weakening existing budget safeguards.
Nitpick Test scratchbudget against fixed memory sizes.

402-402: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Test scratch_budget against fixed memory sizes.

Line 402 passes for any nonzero scratch budget. A scratch_budget() that always returns the 256 MiB floor still passes. No test asserts a budget above the floor. Add scratch_budget_of(memory: Option<u64>) and test it with fixed sizes.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/parallel.rs at line 402:
The existing assertion does not verify that scratch memory scales above its
minimum. Extract the calculation into a `scratch_budget_of` helper that accepts
optional memory, have `scratch_budget` delegate using physical memory, and test
fixed inputs that verify scaling above the floor and fallback to `SCRATCH_FLOOR`
when memory is unavailable.
Nitpick Add a test for the density limit above the floor.

45-46: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a test for the density limit above the floor.

max_density_cells() scales the cell limit with physical memory. It uses memory / 64 cells, clamped to [DENSITY_CELLS_FLOOR, PIXELS_CEILING]. The only test on this limit asserts >= DENSITY_CELLS_FLOOR. A version that always returns the floor also passes that assertion. The density and scaled unit tests do not check this wiring. A regression to the floor goes undetected on machines with more than about 1.024 GB of physical memory.

A test needs control over the memory value. A helper that accepts an injected memory value would let the test use a fixed input above the threshold and assert that the result exceeds the floor. A test that recomputes the expected value from physical() mirrors the implementation. It cannot detect the regression on machines at or below the threshold.

Review comment at @crates/analysis/src/density.rs around lines 45 - 46:
Add a testable path around max_density_cells that accepts a memory value, and
have the public function retain its physical-memory-based behavior through that
path. Test with a fixed input above the floor threshold and assert the resulting
limit exceeds DENSITY_CELLS_FLOOR, so the test detects a regression to always
returning the floor.
Nitpick Assert each gp.env limit against its source function.

6620-6621: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert each gp.env limit against its source function.

The new checks only require each limit to meet its floor. A swapped or miswired limit can still pass. For example, writing bufferBytes into densityCells passes the density floor, because a buffer limit of at least 512 MiB exceeds 16,000,000 cells. A swap of bufferBytes and threadScratchBytes passes only when the scratch budget is at least 512 MiB. On hosts where scratch stays at its 256 MiB floor, the swapped buffer limit fails the 512 MiB check. Equality checks against each source function detect every such mapping error.

Suggested fix
     assert!(limit("densityCells") >= rustgis_analysis::DENSITY_CELLS_FLOOR, "{env}");
     assert!(limit("bufferBytes") >= 512 << 20 && limit("threadScratchBytes") >= 256 << 20, "{env}");
+    assert_eq!(limit("densityCells"), rustgis_analysis::max_density_cells(), "{env}");
+    assert_eq!(limit("bufferBytes"), rustgis_analysis::max_buffer_bytes(), "{env}");
+    assert_eq!(limit("threadScratchBytes"), rustgis_analysis::scratch_budget(), "{env}");

The current mapping is correct. This change adds coverage for the mapping and does not fix a live defect.

`max_density_cells()`, `max_buffer_bytes()`, and `scratch_budget()`. Keep the
