feat(data): a memory budget, the GeoJSON fallback said, losses of kept features and field aliases for ArcGIS protocol buffer pages (#1432) - #1437
Closes the gaps #1432 lists in reading an ArcGIS layer in f=pbf pages, one commit each:
Memory budget across pages.esripbf::Page says what its fields, rows, text and geometries take once read (memory, as the reader already counted against its per-page caps). ogc::Pages sums them against max_decoded_bytes(): a quarter of the computer's memory, from 512 MB (the browser's limit) up to 3 GB (4 GB doesn't fit a 32-bit usize), scaled like max_paged_features. The first page is always kept; a later page past the budget ends the read with "the page after feature N would take the layer past M MB of memory; the rest aren't read".
The GeoJSON fallback is said. A layer whose first protocol buffer page couldn't be fetched or read, and was read in GeoJSON, now says why in its note ("its protocol buffer pages couldn't be read (…), so it is read in GeoJSON"); before this the fallback was silent. The reason is cut to 200 bytes, and carried to whichever page reading goes on. A clean read, in protocol buffers or GeoJSON, still says nothing: I changed this from the issue's proposal (a note on every read) so that a clean Add From Service doesn't give a notice.
Losses of the features kept only.esripbf::read_page_within reads a page's first limit features (the rest counted in Page::left_out), and land_pbf reads each page within what the feature limit leaves, so a page cut at the limit doesn't count what its left-out features lost.
Page::report no longer holds the loss messages, so join_page doesn't take them out by text: esripbf::read says a single page's, and Pages::finish the joined layer's, once.
with_format keeps a #… fragment, as with_query does.
first_mark hashes the first and last features as it writes them, instead of keeping their Debug text.
Field aliases.esripbf::field reads the alias of the format's Field message (field 3) into Field.alias; an empty one, or one equal to the name, is none. A non-UTF-8 alias counts in the existing UTF-8 notice.
The issue's question on saved projects (reading a saved f=geojson query address in f=pbf pages) is left as it is: a saved address is read as it is. A follow-up can change that if wanted.
docs/user-guide/data-formats.md: the ArcGIS REST row says the memory budget and the fallback notice; the protocol buffer row says the aliases.
a page past the memory budget isn't joined and says so, a first page over it is kept, and one within it is joined;
each GeoJSON fallback (refused page, a query asking for f=pbf, a page that can't be fetched) gives its note, and a long reason is cut;
a page cut at the feature limit counts the Z values of the 3 features kept, not 4.
ogc::tests::arcgis_pbf_pages_only_when_listed_with_a_page_size: a layer that lists pbf but names no page size, and one that doesn't list it, are read in GeoJSON.
esripbf::tests::field_aliases_are_kept_unless_empty_or_the_name: aliases kept, none for an empty one or the name, and a non-UTF-8 one said.
arcgis_layer_read_in_protocol_buffer_pages (engine): the layer read in protocol buffers gives no notice; the one read in GeoJSON after its refused page says why.
The PBF reader now parses field aliases and supports bounded page reads with memory estimates, omitted-feature counts, and fingerprints. ArcGIS paging tracks decoded memory, limits page reads, and can fall back to GeoJSON with a redacted, truncated failure reason.
Changes: ArcGIS PBF paging and decoding

Summary
PBF page decoding and field aliases crates/data/src/esripbf.rs, crates/data/src/esripbf/tests.rs, tests/support/esripbf.rs, docs/user-guide/data-formats.md
The reader parses field aliases, adds bounded reads, and reports memory, omitted-feature counts, and fingerprints. Tests cover aliases and bounded reads. The guide documents aliases as display names.
ArcGIS paging and fallback notes crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs, crates/data/src/ogc.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/data-formats.md
Paging tracks decoded memory and does not join later pages that exceed the budget. A first-page PBF failure triggers GeoJSON reading with a redacted, truncated reason in the note. Format replacement preserves URL fragments. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.

The title names a memory budget, the GeoJSON fallback notice, feature-loss counting, and field aliases. All four appear in the changeset. It leads with a conventional prefix and a long list of items. The title is 138 characters and 21 words, which exceeds the concise single-sentence guidance. Its grammar also reads awkwardly, since 'the GeoJSON fallback said' is an unclear verb phrase.

The new public items (DECODED_FLOOR, DECODED_CEILING, max_decoded_bytes, Page::memory, Page::left_out, read_page_within) are used by these paths. The fingerprint over serialized protocol buffer data and the "join pages by field names and types" intent from the commit messages relate to #1432 point 5 and point 4. No unrelated change was found.
Uncertainty: the full ogc.rs diff was not read in this review. Some tests in that file were not checked line by line.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #1432 is the only active target. No parent context applies. Four of its five coding points are met at the reviewed head. Point 2 is not met.
Met:
Memory budget [#1432 point 1]: ogc::max_decoded_bytes scales from physical memory, bounded to 512 MB to 3 GB. esripbf::Page::memory counts rows, geometries and text. Pages stops the read when a later page exceeds the budget. The first page is always kept.
Loss counts [#1432 point 3]: esripbf::read_page_within keeps the first limit features and sets Page::left_out. land_pbf passes the remaining room. A cut page counts losses only for kept features.
Field aliases [#1432 point 4]: esripbf::field reads field 3 into the alias. An empty alias, or one equal to the name, becomes none. Invalid UTF-8 counts in the existing UTF-8 notice.
Quality points [#1432 point 5]: loss messages are no longer filtered by text in join_page. with_format keeps the # fragment. first_mark hashes features. The tests for a layer that lists pbf without a page size, a layer that does not list pbf, and with_format with uppercase F are in the PR.
Fallback note [#1432 point 2, fallback case]: when the first pbf page fails, the note says its protocol buffer pages couldn't be read, with the reason cut to 200 bytes.
Not met:
Issue point 2 requires the layer note to say "read in protocol buffer pages" or "read in GeoJSON pages" for each read. The PR adds a note only on fallback. The PR description states that a clean read gives no note, as a deliberate change from the issue. The engine test arcgis_layer_read_in_protocol_buffer_pages expects no protocol buffer notice for the Parcels layer. A layer read in GeoJSON without fallback also gets no format note.
Not counted: the saved-project question in #1432 is a maintainer question, not a coding requirement.
Limit: the repository diff tool returned no text for crates/engine/src/tests.rs, and the file read was truncated before the relevant test. The engine test expectation rests on the supplied change summary and the PR description.
Resolution
Add the format note to every layer read. For a clean protocol buffer read, say "read in protocol buffer pages". For a layer read in GeoJSON without fallback, say "read in GeoJSON pages". Keep the fallback note and its reason. Update the Step::Done(_, None) assertions in ogc::tests::arcgis_pbf_pages_joined_when_the_layer_lists_them and the expectation in the engine test arcgis_layer_read_in_protocol_buffer_pages. Add tests for both clean cases. Alternatively, the maintainer can amend #1432 to remove the clean-read note requirement. This check must then be reassessed against the amended issue.

A rabbit reads pages, one nibble at a time, Keeps aliases neat and counts every line. If memory fills, the next page can wait, A note tells why GeoJSON took the gate. The URL keeps its fragment in view, And the rabbit thumps, “The read is through!”
Reviewed the full diff (7 files), the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code in ogc.rs, esripbf.rs, memory.rs, value.rs, the engine test and tiles/cache.rs. There were no prior review threads, so nothing was skipped as already raised. I did not run the test suite.
Bugs
The memory budget is enforced only after a page is decoded, and the first page is kept whatever its size. A single page can add up to about 2 GiB (1 GiB geometry + 512 MiB text + 512 MiB rows) before the check runs. On small machines that can exceed the "no more than a quarter of the computer's memory once read" wording in data-formats.md. Confidence: medium-low. Inline comment left at ogc.rs:3457.
No other correctness bugs found. I checked the land/land_page wrapper for the carried fallback reason, read_page_within truncation before the feature loop, the finish losses-once path, first_mark, with_format, and the Field alias parsing (empty and name-equal aliases are dropped; a non-UTF-8 alias is noticed).
Security
The fallback reason from a failed first pbf page is now shown in notices (and in Python and assistant output). If transport errors embed the request URL, an ArcGIS token could leak. I could not confirm that from the code. Confidence: low. Inline comment left at ogc.rs:3428, with a diagnostics::redact suggestion.
Performance
max_decoded_bytes() calls physical() once per Pages value, which is cached, so the cost is negligible. No issues.
Quality
Nit: the UTF-8 notice (esripbf.rs:155) now also counts non-UTF-8 aliases but still says "values or field names". Wording only, so it can wait for the release quality pass.
Nit: first_mark now compares a 64-bit DefaultHasher digest instead of the exact text. A collision would stop the read with a note, not silently. The probability is negligible.
AGENTS.md
Never crash: no new unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. Saturating arithmetic is used throughout.
Never silent: the notices cover the fallback, the budget stop, the feature cut and the losses, and the clean-read tests assert no notice. Aliases are read into Field.alias; I did not confirm whether every writer preserves them.
Docs were updated and no new dependencies were added.
Low-confidence, not posted
Field equality now includes alias, and ogc.rs:3473 compares fields across pages. A page whose aliases differ from the first would stop the read with "has other fields than the first". ArcGIS should send the same aliases on every page, so this is unlikely.
Change size
Compared with the base branch: the whole PR against main (merge base 2f16331 to PR head ef84c91).
GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
I found one low-confidence issue, posted inline. The rest of the change looks correct as far as reading the code can show; I could not compile or run the tests here.
Bugs
Low confidence (about 30%), crates/data/src/ogc.rs:3461: when a protocol buffer read has joined only empty pages, the new budget notice is dropped. stop discards its note and re-reads the layer in GeoJSON, which has no memory budget. This needs an empty first page followed by an over-budget page, so it is narrow. Posted inline.
Security
None found. The pbf fallback reason now goes through diagnostics::redact and is cut to 200 bytes. I confirmed redact strips ?token=… and that the 16 KB input limit doesn't affect the long-reason test.
Performance
None found. read_page_within truncates before decoding per-feature values, so features past the limit aren't decoded (confirmed in esripbf.rs). first_mark now hashes instead of formatting a large debug string.
Quality
Nit, for the release quality pass: tests/support/esripbf.rs::page_with_z duplicates page and could take a Z flag instead.
Nit: the engine test's starts_with("Parcels") check is narrower than the old "protocol buffers" check. It works, but it depends on the engine's notice prefix.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. New non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe. Notices use format!, as the rest of the data crate does. Both paths of the notice are tested. The docs match the code: "a quarter" is memory::SHARE = 4, and the 512 MB to 3 GB range matches the constants.
Prior reviews
2 existing threads. One is answered by this PR's change: the reason is now redacted, so I did not re-post it.
The other is the first-page budget overshoot (ogc.rs:3458). The code is unchanged, and the docs now name the first-page exception. I left it alone, but the code still allows about 2 GiB on a 4 GB machine.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 2f16331 to PR head 63f3495).
I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the three prior review threads, and traced the changed paths through ogc.rs (land, land_pbf, join_page, stop, finish) and esripbf.rs (read_page_within, field). I could not run the test suite (no execution in this environment), so these findings come from reading the code.
Bugs
None found on the changed paths. The budget stop, the GeoJSON fallback note, the carry of pbf_failed across pages, and the feature-limit truncation all behave as the tests describe. Truncation runs before feature decoding, so the loss and memory tallies only count kept features. Confidence: high.
Security
Low: first_mark now hashes with DefaultHasher::new(), which has fixed keys. A hostile server could craft two different pages with the same hash, and the second would be taken as a repeated page. The result is a visible stop note ("the server sent its first features again"), not silent loss, so the impact is small. Confidence: low.
The fallback reason is passed through diagnostics::redact before it is cut to 200 bytes, and a test covers a token= in the reason. This matches the earlier thread's request. Confidence: high.
Performance
None worth raising. The hash avoids holding a second copy of large geometries, and the memory budget is a single addition per page.
Quality
Pages::land (crates/data/src/ogc.rs, the Step::Decoded arm of the wrapper): this arm can't be reached. After a protocol buffer fallback, pbf is false and decoded is None, so finish always returns Done. The arm can be dropped in favour of step => step, or kept with a comment. Confidence: high (about 90%) that it is dead.
DECODED_FLOOR and DECODED_CEILING are pub, but they are only used inside ogc.rs. They could be private unless something outside needs them. Confidence: medium.
Both are nits, so they can wait for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe in non-test code. The new non-test code uses get-style and saturating arithmetic.
The new code is wasm-safe: physical() returns None on wasm, so the budget falls back to the 512 MB floor, and the 3 GiB ceiling fits in a 32-bit usize.
Silent-loss rules are met: the budget stop, the record-limit cut, and the GeoJSON fallback each produce a notice. Clean reads produce none, and the tests check both cases.
The field alias's non-UTF-8 case goes into the existing "values or field names aren't valid UTF-8" notice.
The new user-visible notes are plain English, like the existing notes in the data crate, so I did not flag them for tl!.
No new third-party code or assets.
Prior review threads
I left 3 earlier concerns alone. Two are answered by the author: the first-page memory overrun (wording changed in the docs) and the empty first page losing the budget note. The third, about tokens in the fallback reason, is answered by the redact call. I did not repeat any of them, since the code they point at is unchanged or the answer covers them.
No inline comments: nothing I found needed one. The two quality nits are grouped above for the release quality pass.

Count only retained features against the row budget.
read_page_within checks MAX_ROW_BYTES against every feature in the page. It applies limit only after that check, at features.truncate(limit). Features past limit are never decoded, so the check can reject a page whose retained features fit. For a very wide schema, the first page then fails and falls back to GeoJSON. The check should count only the features that are kept.

Update the MAX_ROW_BYTES check in read_page_within to count only retained
features, using the smaller of the feature count and limit for both the budget
check and its error details. Preserve the existing truncation and pagination
behavior.
Both assertions at lines 212-213 still pass if Page::memory counts only rows. A regression that drops the geometry or text terms would not fail this test.
Add a case with equal row and feature counts. Give one feature more vertices or longer text than the other. Assert that the feature with more geometry or text reports a larger memory.
This adds coverage for current behavior. It does not indicate a current defect.

On the follow-up about MAX_ROW_BYTES counting every feature of a page before the limit: that check is as it was before this PR, when the whole page was read, so it refuses no page it didn't refuse before; it only matters for a page whose rows alone take over 512 MB. Left for the release quality pass.
I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code: the page reader (esripbf.rs), Pages::land_pbf/join_page/finish/stop (ogc.rs), memory::scaled, diagnostics::redact, the engine test, and the support encoder. I found no bugs that would cause a crash, silent data loss on a normal path, or a security problem. One low-confidence concern is posted inline.
Bugs: none found. The checks that mattered came out clean:
Page::losses are now said once in read()/finish(), not removed by text match. No other caller of read_page depends on loss messages in report.
cut (left_out > 0) reaches finish_at_max exactly when the old read() > max check did, so the feature limit behaves as before.
The pbf_failed note is carried across Fetch and wrapped on Done/Decoded, and the Done(first, None) path from stop gets the note too.
scaled(…, 1) gives a quarter of physical memory, clamped to 512 MB–3 GB. 3 << 30 fits a 32-bit usize.
MAX_ROW_BYTES, MAX_TEXT_BYTES and MAX_GEOMETRY_BYTES exist, so the doc links resolve.
tests/support/esripbf.rs has #![allow(dead_code)], so the new page_with_z helper does not trip -D warnings in the engine test crate.
Security: the fallback reason goes through diagnostics::redact and is cut to 200 bytes after redaction, in that order. The engine test checks the notice text.
Performance: nothing notable. The fingerprint hashes only the first and last features, and the reader decodes only up to limit features.
Quality (not posted, minor):
DECODED_FLOOR and DECODED_CEILING are pub const, and max_decoded_bytes is only used inside ogc.rs. pub(crate) would do.
The doc on read_page_within ("counts what those it keeps lost, and no others") reads awkwardly.
read_page_within still checks MAX_ROW_BYTES against the whole page before truncating to limit. This is the same as before the PR, so it is not a regression.
AGENTS.md: every new notice is tested both ways (lossy input gives it, clean input does not), and the new arcgis_pbf_pages_only_when_listed_with_a_page_size test covers the fallback gate. The engine test's pbf-layer check was narrowed from "no notice mentions protocol buffers" to "no notice starts with Parcels". That is still sufficient for the pbf layer.
Inline comment posted (1):
crates/data/src/ogc.rs:3458: a later page with a different alias for a field is joined silently and its alias dropped. This conflicts with "never silent". Low confidence (about 35%), because servers rarely change aliases mid-read.
Prior review threads: there are 5 (the alias-comparison thread, the first_mark fingerprint thread, the memory-budget thread, the GeoJSON-stop note thread, and the redaction thread). The code matches each author reply, so I left all 5 alone and did not re-raise any.

I found no blocking bugs in PR #1437. The memory budget, the GeoJSON fallback note, the left-out loss counting, the aliases, and the fingerprint all match the PR description, and each has a test covering both the lossy and the clean case. I traced the pbf_failed carry through land, the budget stop, and the finish_at_max cut, and found no path that drops a notice. One low-confidence point is below. I posted no inline comments: the one I tried (esripbf.rs:246) is outside the PR's diff hunks, so GitHub rejected it.

Low (about 25%), crates/data/src/esripbf.rs:246: The row-budget check runs while the page is read, against every feature the server sent. The limit cut comes later, at features.truncate(limit). So a page whose sent features exceed MAX_ROW_BYTES is refused whole, even when only the kept features would be read. Real pages are bounded by the record limit, so this is hard to reach. A hostile server could reach it, and the result is an error with a notice, not silent loss or a crash. Either count only the kept features, or note in the doc comment that the bound covers the whole answer.
Security
None found. The fallback reason goes through diagnostics::redact before it is cut to 200 bytes. The test covers a token= value, and the cut happens after redaction, so a token cannot be split and leak.
Performance
None found. The fingerprint hashes only the first and last features. The field comparison is linear in the field count.
Quality (grouped nits, all optional)
ogc.rs, land: the Step::Decoded arm can't be reached while pbf_failed is set. The fallback only happens while decoded is None, and pbf is false afterwards. The arm could go, leaving the step => step catch-all.
ogc.rs: DECODED_FLOOR and DECODED_CEILING are pub const. Check whether anything outside the module uses them. If not, they can be private.
The engine test now checks t.starts_with("Parcels") where it used to check for "protocol buffers". That is correct, because the new Zoning note contains that phrase. It is weaker only if a notice for the clean layer were ever prefixed differently.
AGENTS.md
Compliant. No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe is added to non-test code. Every loss is noticed, and each notice is counted once. Both branches are tested. Docs are updated. The new Field.alias population is covered by the existing UTF-8 notice.
Prior review threads: 6 threads exist. 5 are resolved and fixed (the first-page budget wording, the fingerprint, the alias join, the redaction, and the alias-join note). The sixth, about the empty-first-page path that re-reads GeoJSON without the budget, the author answered as a hostile-server case; the code has not changed there. I did not re-raise any of them.
Confidence: high on the code paths I traced. Lower on whether the row-budget case matters in practice.

Add the format note to every layer read. For a clean protocol buffer read, say
"read in protocol buffer pages". For a layer read in GeoJSON without fallback,
say "read in GeoJSON pages". Keep the fallback note and its reason. Update the
`Step::Done(_, None)` assertions in
`ogc::tests::arcgis_pbf_pages_joined_when_the_layer_lists_them` and the
expectation in the engine test `arcgis_layer_read_in_protocol_buffer_pages`. Add
tests for both clean cases. Alternatively, the maintainer can amend #1432 to
remove the clean-read note requirement. This check must then be reassessed
against the amended issue.

Summary
Closes the gaps #1432 lists in reading an ArcGIS layer in
f=pbfpages, one commit each:esripbf::Pagesays what its fields, rows, text and geometries take once read (memory, as the reader already counted against its per-page caps).ogc::Pagessums them againstmax_decoded_bytes(): a quarter of the computer's memory, from 512 MB (the browser's limit) up to 3 GB (4 GB doesn't fit a 32-bitusize), scaled likemax_paged_features. The first page is always kept; a later page past the budget ends the read with "the page after feature N would take the layer past M MB of memory; the rest aren't read".esripbf::read_page_withinreads a page's firstlimitfeatures (the rest counted inPage::left_out), andland_pbfreads each page within what the feature limit leaves, so a page cut at the limit doesn't count what its left-out features lost.Page::reportno longer holds the loss messages, sojoin_pagedoesn't take them out by text:esripbf::readsays a single page's, andPages::finishthe joined layer's, once.with_formatkeeps a#…fragment, aswith_querydoes.first_markhashes the first and last features as it writes them, instead of keeping theirDebugtext.esripbf::fieldreads thealiasof the format'sFieldmessage (field 3) intoField.alias; an empty one, or one equal to the name, is none. A non-UTF-8 alias counts in the existing UTF-8 notice. The issue's question on saved projects (reading a saved
f=geojsonquery address inf=pbfpages) is left as it is: a saved address is read as it is. A follow-up can change that if wanted.docs/user-guide/data-formats.md: the ArcGIS REST row says the memory budget and the fallback notice; the protocol buffer row says the aliases.Testing
