feat(analysis): Repair Geometry writes each feature with its geometry made valid and says what it did - #1443
A new geoprocessing tool, Repair Geometry (repairGeometry, Data Management › Features), follows on from Check Geometry (#1417). It writes every feature to a new layer with its geometry made valid by the OGC Simple Features rules that Check Geometry checks. If features are selected, only those are processed.
Inputs:input, a vector layer. output is optional and defaults to <input>_repaired.
Output: one row per processed feature, in table order. Each row keeps its feature id, attributes and CRS, and gets a text field repairs that lists what was repaired as codes separated by , . The codes are the same ones Check Geometry writes, in the same order. A feature with nothing wrong gets an empty repairs value and is copied exactly as stored. If the layer already has a repairs field, the new field takes the next free name (repairs_2) and the tool says so.
Features that can't be repaired stay in the output, with their attributes:
Written without geometry: null_geometry, non_finite_coordinate, too_few_points (every part has too few distinct points) and no_area (nothing with an area is left after the repair).
Written unchanged: too_complex (over the per-feature work bound, or not enough memory) and repair_failed (geo's relate or overlay failed, the coordinates don't fit the overlay's grid, or the rebuilt geometry isn't valid).
Notices: one per kind, each with a count. They cover:
the summary, by code;
features written without geometry, by reason;
features left unchanged, by reason;
rings and parts dropped;
features whose holes were taken out;
features whose parts were merged, or whose split interiors were written as separate parts;
how far the overlay's grid may have moved rebuilt coordinates;
extra attribute values that didn't fit.
Lines may cross themselves, so for lines only repeated vertices and parts with fewer than 2 distinct points are repaired. Points have nothing to repair apart from non-finite coordinates.
How
Fixes that move no coordinate come first. Unclosed rings are closed, repeated vertices are dropped, and any ring or line part with too few distinct points is dropped. When an exterior ring is dropped, its holes go with it. A feature with only these problems keeps every other vertex exactly.
The rebuild by area ("shells minus holes", per part). If the checks still find a polygon-level problem, the polygon is rebuilt from its area:
Each part is its outer ring minus its own holes, and the feature is the union of its parts. This is the same idea as the "structure" method of GEOS MakeValid.
Each ring stands for the area it winds around, under the non-zero fill rule, so ring orientation doesn't matter. GeoJSON and Shapefile rings, which wind in opposite directions, give the same result.
As a result, a hole outside its shell disappears (the part of a hole that lies inside the shell stays a hole), overlapping holes merge, overlapping parts merge, and an interior split by rings touching at points becomes one part per piece.
Self-intersections use boolean_op_with_fill_rule, not unary_union. A ring that crosses itself is resolved with geo's boolean_op_with_fill_rule (FillRule::NonZero). unary_union loses a figure-eight's loop; the fill-rule overlay keeps both lobes of a bow-tie.
Rechecking: after the fixes that move no coordinate, the feature is checked again. Check Geometry doesn't relate a part that has a self-crossing ring to its other rings or parts, so the second check catches those relations. The rebuild also adds hole_outside_shell or parts_overlap when it finds them.
Validation: every repaired geometry is checked again and written only if it is valid. Otherwise the feature is written unchanged with repair_failed.
Grid rounding: the overlay works on an integer grid. The tool reports the farthest rebuilt coordinates may have moved, which is 5 grid steps; in the tests the largest move was about two thirds of a step.
Bounds and memory: these follow Check Geometry.
Each check and each overlay has the same per-feature work bound (validity::MAX_WORK). The overlay's charge includes the vertices it adds where rings cross.
Buffers that grow with the input are reserved fallibly through validity::Room and report Limit::Memory.
In the browser, the overlay's estimated memory is requested before it runs. The output's memory is requested before anything is copied.
The overlay only runs on finite coordinates that fit its grid. Natively, a panic in the overlay is caught and the feature is written unchanged.
The tool loop checks for cancellation and reports progress (control::check/reached) in both the repair pass and the copy pass.
Small shared edits:
validity.rs: Room and distinct_up_to are now crate-visible. Checked gains a contacts count, used to charge the overlay for crossings.
check_geometry.rs: row_bytes, features and joined are shared with the new tool. Check Geometry's behaviour is unchanged.
Docs:docs/user-guide/analysis.md gets a "Repairing geometry" section, and the geoprocessing SKILL.md lists the tool.
Testing
cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, all tests, layers) passes.
crates/analysis/tests/repair_geometry.rs has 16 integration tests through the tool API. They cover:
each repair on its own, and several repairs in one feature;
rebuilt rings winding the way OGC requires, and both input windings giving the same result;
vertex fixes moving no coordinate, and valid features copied exactly;
notices and their counts on a mixed layer;
too-complex features written unchanged;
selection, attributes, CRS and ids kept, and the repairs field renamed when the name is taken;
empty layers, tables and unknown layers;
the overlay's coordinate movement staying below one grid step;
GeoJSON read by the real reader, and a Shapefile round trip giving the same repairs.
crates/analysis/src/repair.rs has 10 unit tests. They cover:
degenerate rings and parts dropped and counted;
both bow-tie lobes kept in either winding;
grid steps;
the reason recorded for each unrepairable case;
the work bound and the overlay's memory request;
crossings charged to the overlay (a 2001-point star);
every fallible reservation refused in turn leaving the feature as it was;
coordinates the grid can't hold;
a repair result that isn't valid not being kept.
crates/analysis/src/tools/repair_geometry.rs has 4 unit tests. They cover:
the output refused when the browser has no room for it;
notices for features left unchanged, by reason;
cancelling during the repairs and during the copies;
rounding of the reported bound.
Screenshots were rendered with cargo run --release -p rustgis-ui-egui --example ui_shot.
UI evidence
New tool, so only after-screenshots:
repair-geometry-dialog.png: the Repair Geometry tool pane with the Parcels layer chosen as input. Parcels holds a bow-tie, a square with a hole outside its shell, and a valid square.
repair-geometry-table.png: the attribute table of Parcels_repaired. Its repairs field reads self_intersection for the bow-tie, hole_outside_shell for the polygon with the stray hole, and is empty for the valid square. On the map, the repaired bow-tie keeps both triangles and the stray hole is gone. The status bar shows the overlay's grid notice.

ROADMAP › Solid ground: "Vector tools, each writing a new layer: check and fix geometry". This PR adds the "fix" half.
Where code comes from: no code was copied or translated from another project. GEOS MakeValid's "structure" method is only a conceptual reference for the shells-minus-holes approach; I didn't follow its code. The overlay is the geo crate's BooleanOps (i_overlay). The validity rules follow OGC 06-103r4 / ISO 19125-1.
Known limits
A ring that crosses itself is rebuilt by geo's overlay before the width check. If the overlay's grid rounds away a lobe thinner than a grid step (about 0.013 mm), that lobe is not reported. Telling it apart needs a check that every input vertex lies near the output, which needs a spatial index on large rings; that is left for a follow-up.
A hole thinner than a grid step outside a self-crossing shell is reported as no_area rather than hole_outside_shell. The hole is still counted and nothing is lost silently; only the label differs.

… made valid and says what it did
A new tool, repairGeometry (Data Management › Features), writes every
feature (the selection, or all) to a new layer with its geometry made
valid by the rules Check Geometry checks, its attributes kept and a
repairs field naming what was repaired.
Unclosed rings are closed, repeated vertices and rings or line parts
with too few distinct points are dropped; these fixes move no
coordinate. A polygon with a ring crossing itself, a hole outside its
shell, rings or parts meeting, or an interior split by rings touching at
points is rebuilt by area with geo's boolean overlay: each ring stands
for the area it winds around (non-zero winding, so ring direction
doesn't matter), a part is its exterior ring's area less its holes', and
the feature is the union of its parts. Every result is checked again and
written only when valid.
A feature that can't be repaired (missing geometry, non-finite
coordinates, nothing with an area left) stays without geometry; one too
complex, without the memory, or that the overlay fails on is written
unchanged. Each kind is counted in a notice, as are dropped rings,
removed holes, merged parts and how far the overlay's grid may have
moved rebuilt coordinates.

Repair Geometry works as described for normal data. Two small gaps remain. Tool text overstates that all output geometry is made valid. Extremely tiny shells paired with distant holes can come out without geometry, and the repairs field reports this as no_area. Both are narrow and visible to users, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Two inline comments on repair.rs cover the one concrete bug. Both are buffered and post after the session completes.
Bugs
Dropped holes are not counted (high confidence). When an exterior ring is degenerate, rings() breaks out of the loop without counting the holes that go with it. The "rings or parts with too few distinct points or no area were dropped" notice therefore undercounts, which breaks the "says how much" rule. by_area has the same gap when a shell has no area. Inline comments are on repair.rs:234 and repair.rs:389. The fix changes the expected count in degenerate_rings_and_parts_are_dropped_and_counted from 3 to 4.
Security
None found. The new code takes file and parameter input only through the existing bounded checks, Room reservations and the has_room callback. The hostile_params_never_panic test in tools.rs iterates TOOLS, so the new tool is covered automatically.
Performance
None significant. The overlay is bounded by OVERLAY_COST against MAX_WORK, and the crossing count is charged to it. Minor: polygon() runs crossing.clone().count() before collecting, which is two passes over the problems. This is negligible.
Quality
Low confidence (about 35%): grid_step in repair.rs hard-codes i_overlay's internal scaling (2^(29 - round(log2 h))). If the geo/i_overlay version changes its grid, both the moved bound and the on_grid guard that protects the browser go stale. A comment naming the dependency version, or a test pinned to it, would help.
Nit (group for the quality pass): docs/user-guide/analysis.md says codes come "in the order of the table above", which is ambiguous, since the code table is below that paragraph.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic!, unsafe or indexing in non-test code that I found. Test code uses unwrap and panic!, which is allowed.
Notices are one per kind with counts. The undercount above is the only silent-loss gap I found.
Tests exist for both lossy and clean input (valid_features_are_copied_exactly).
Asset, licence and i18n rules don't apply to this change in any way I could find.
Prior review threads: none on this PR, so I left no earlier concerns alone.
I didn't compile or run the tests. Everything above comes from reading the diff and the surrounding source.

…rts it drops; movement in degrees
A part whose ring crosses itself isn't checked for holes that overlap each
other, so when the rebuild merged them, repairs didn't list
rings_intersect. Their union now tells it, as the parts' union tells
parts_overlap: fewer polygons than holes. Holes apart or touching only at
a point add nothing.
Stored coordinates are longitude and latitude, so the notice gives the
farthest move in degrees, not in "the layer's coordinate units", which
reads as metres for a projected layer. The user guide gives the grid step
for a 10 km feature in degrees too.
The overlay rounds to a grid that follows the extent of all its input,
so a hole or part far smaller or thinner than the others could be
rounded onto one line of it and vanish: nothing counted it, and a union
making fewer polygons than it was given was taken for parts_overlap or
rings_intersect even when nothing merged. A hole or part narrower than
one grid step in any direction is now dropped before the difference or
the union that would round it away, counted, and written as no_area
after the other codes; one notice gives how many were dropped and from
how many features, and the summary counts no_area.
Rounding moves a point by up to half a step on each axis, so a long
sliver at an angle can collapse while its extent spans many steps on
both axes, and across a diagonal the width needed grows to √2 steps at
45°. The width is measured across the convex hull's edges by rotating
calipers (Shamos 1978; Toussaint 1983), against the most rounding can
move a point across each one; the hull, built in buffers reserved
fallibly, is computed only for pieces whose area doesn't already show
them wide enough.
Reviewed the full diff (9 files) against pr-context/AGENTS.md, the PR metadata, and the surrounding source. I did not build or run the tests, so every finding below comes from reading the code.
Bugs
Shell narrower than the overlay grid is dropped as no area (crates/analysis/src/repair.rs:583). Only holes and parts go through the new narrow filter, not the shell of a part with holes. A thin shell can then round to nothing in the difference, and a valid feature is written without geometry as no_area. Confidence: moderate, from reading only. This re-raises the open thread on this line with the new context: the narrow filter now exists and skips the shell. Posted inline with a suggestion.
Width test assumes pieces have no interior rings (repair.rs, narrower_than, around line 415). It measures only the exterior ring, but a self-crossing hole's union can produce a piece with an interior, so a thin piece could be kept. Confidence: low, contrived case, not posted.
Security
Nothing found. The new code does no I/O beyond the existing Services and Inputs paths. The test writes under temp_dir with a PID-suffixed name.
Performance
Nothing significant. The convex hull runs only for polygons that fail the cheap area bound, as the doc comment says. Each changed feature gets two validity checks, which is acceptable under the work bound.
Quality (not posted; for the release quality pass)
joined(&[why.as_str()], "") allocates for a single code, where the string could be used directly (tools/repair_geometry.rs).
The integration test uses std::time::Instant, while the guidance says web_time below apps/. It is test-only.
The integration test has a println! of the worst move.
One long line in docs/user-guide/analysis.md near the "In the browser" sentence.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic!, unreachable!, todo!, unsafe, indexing, or new dependencies in non-test code. The panic! calls are in #[cfg(test)] modules.
The tool is registered in TOOLS, so the analysis hostile-params test should cover it. I did not open that test to confirm it iterates TOOLS.
Notices are emitted through ToolResult::messages with one notice per kind and a count, and the tests cover both lossy and clean input.
Tool messages are plain format! strings, consistent with the other analysis tools. Data and CLI text is exempt from translation.
The ATTRIBUTION and screenshot rules do not apply, since the PR adds no assets.
Prior reviews
5 earlier concerns left alone: the tools.rs summary still says "made valid" without qualifying unrepairable features (code unchanged, still open); two hole-count threads (answered by the author); the rings_intersect thread and the degrees-of-movement thread (addressed in 72bd6bc).
1 concern re-raised with new context: the shell thread on repair.rs:583.
