Summary

Implements the standalone batch geoprocessing runner gp.batch in crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs, fulfilling the roadmap item in ROADMAP.md under Underway ("Batch runs: one tool over many layers or a folder of files", #1458).

gp.batch complements gp.run by executing any registered geoprocessing tool over an array of layers, file paths, a wildcard selector ("*"), or an entire directory folder of vector files in an atomic, fault-tolerant run.

Comparison: Single Processing (gp.run) vs. Batch Processing (gp.batch)

Dimension Single Processing (gp.run) Batch Processing (gp.batch)
Command ID gp.run gp.batch
Primary Goal Run a single geoprocessing tool on one layer or table. Execute one tool repeatedly across multiple project layers, file paths, or a directory folder of datasets.
Target Specification Fixed: params: {"input": "Cities", ...} Dynamic: inputs: ["Cities", "Rivers"] or folder: "data/raw/"
Parameter Binding Caller must explicitly name the input parameter (input, target, polygons). Smart auto-binding: detects the tool's primary layer parameter or accepts custom param / batch_param.
Failure Semantics Fail-Fast: Returns Err(msg) immediately on any error. Isolated Fault Tolerance ("Never Crash, Never Silent"): Executes each item in an isolated boundary. If layer $k$ fails, logs a notification, records the error, and continues with items $k+1 \dots N$.
Progress Reporting Single-item progress (0%–100% of rows/vertices). Passes Control to each running tool for step progress; returned JSON and notices report aggregate total, succeeded, and failed.
Cancellation Synchronous on Session; UI background runs use tool_start + Control. Synchronous on Session; run_batch_with accepts an Arc<Control> allowing cooperative cancellation across items for programmatic callers and tests.
Output Naming Defaults to static tool name ("Buffer"). Multiple runs risk layer name collision. Pattern Templating: Dynamically expands output_pattern (default: "{input}_{tool}"), ensuring non-colliding layer names (e.g. "Cities_buffer", "Rivers_buffer").
Session Provenance Logs 1 GpRecord per command call. Logs each individual run into Session.project.gp_history plus notifies a consolidated summary ("Batch 'buffer' complete: 2 succeeded, 1 failed").
Platform Portability Runs on Desktop, CLI, and WebAssembly. Project layer batching (inputs: [...] or inputs: "*") works on Desktop, CLI, and WASM. File directory iteration (folder: "...") is gated desktop-only (#[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))]).

Command Specification & Examples

1. Running across multiple layers:

{
  "tool": "buffer",
  "inputs": ["Cities", "Rivers"],
  "output_pattern": "{input}_buffer",
  "params": {
    "distance": 50,
    "units": "Kilometers"
  }
}

2. Running over all vector layers in project:

{
  "tool": "convexHull",
  "inputs": "*",
  "output_pattern": "{input}_hull"
}

3. Running over a folder of files:

{
  "tool": "simplify",
  "folder": "data/shapefiles",
  "output_pattern": "{input}_simplified",
  "params": {
    "tolerance": 0.01
  }
}

Security & Permission Model

  • File Access Classification (Reach::Files): Because gp.batch can read datasets from disk in the current working directory, all explicit inputs (layer names or file paths) and folder specifications are classified as file access (Reach::Files), prompting for confirmation in the AI Assistant and restricted in imported tasks without file permissions.
  • In-Memory Operations: A wildcard run (inputs: "*") is file access only when the tool reads files through a Path or VectorLayers parameter or runs a GeoLibre program; otherwise it runs over the active map's layers without file access. Tools that write files are refused.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Run a geoprocessing tool across named layers, all vector layers on the active map, or supported files in a folder on native builds. Folder inputs are processed alphabetically.
    • Batch runs continue after individual failures and report successful and failed inputs, output names, and relevant errors. A run succeeds if at least one input completes; if all inputs fail, the errors are reported.
    • Batch runs can be replayed from history.
    • Table outputs are added without replacing existing tables by default; name collisions receive numbered suffixes.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on batch inputs, output naming, parameter assignment, file-access permissions, and error reporting.

- Implements gp.batch in crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs to execute any tool over multiple project layers, file paths, wildcard *, or a directory folder
- Supports dynamic parameter binding, output pattern templating ({input}_{tool}), and cancellation via Control
- Provides isolated per-item fault tolerance adhering to Never Crash, Never Silent
- Adds integration unit tests covering multi-layer, wildcard, fault tolerance, folder scanning, and validation
- Adds documentation in docs/user-guide/analysis.md

Walkthrough

This change adds gp.batch to run one geoprocessing tool across selected layers or files. It adds batch result handling, file-access classification, and history replay support. It also documents batch behavior, updates project status, and exposes accepted parameter-name checks for analysis tools.

Changes: Batch geoprocessing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Batch command setup and inputs
crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs
gp.batch validates options and shared parameters, selects inputs from named layers, active-map vector layers, or native folders, and checks output patterns.
Per-input execution and results
crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs
The command runs each input with cancellation handling, tracks outputs and failures, records history, and returns aggregate results. Tests cover input selection, output naming, file loading, warnings, replay, cancellation, and cleanup.
Tool results and table outputs
crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs
Shared tool execution supports configurable notices and table replacement. It handles table-name collisions, custom history data, and messages from file-queue operations.
Batch access, replay, and documentation
crates/engine/src/cmd/items.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/plugins.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/history.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md, ROADMAP.md, GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md
File-access checks include batch inputs and parameters, and history replay accepts gp.batch records. The guide describes batch options, results, and access rules. Project status documents mark batch runs as underway and available.

Analysis parameter recognition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Accepted parameter names
crates/analysis/src/tools.rs, crates/analysis/src/lib.rs

Bugs

  • Layer names with a dot are truncated. file_stem runs on layer names too, so Roads.2020 becomes Roads_buffer, and Roads.2020 and Roads.2021 collide. (gp.rs:1073, confidence high)
  • Output names can collide, and the batch still reports success. A pattern without {input}, or two inputs with the same stem, gives duplicate layer names. Line 1079 also silently overwrites a caller's params.output. (gp.rs:1074, confidence medium)
  • Possible approval-gate bypass. inputs_of now reads files for single-layer params, but reads_files still only covers Path and VectorLayers. The assistant's gate therefore does not see {"tool":"buffer","params":{"input":"roads.geojson"}} as file access. (gp.rs:771, confidence medium, from reading plugins.rs:357 and items.rs:817; I did not run it)

Security

  • No findings. gp.batch is gated for the assistant because its spec contains "folder", which is in PLACE_KEYS.

Performance

  • No cap on the number of batch items; a large folder runs every file in one call. Low severity.

Quality

  • Unrelated doc rewrites, and they contradict the code. analysis.md documents <input>_Validation and a status schema, but check_geometry.rs:62 writes <input>_check. It also documents fixGeometries, which exists nowhere in crates/, removes the raster.rasterize section even though that code exists, and reworded the work-limit text. (analysis.md:860, confidence high; table row at :161)
  • Silent folder skips. Unsupported extensions, unreadable entries, and an ignored folder when inputs is also given produce no notice. (gp.rs:1036, confidence high)
  • Help text and docs disagree on the parameter name. The spec says outputPattern, while the docs and tests use output_pattern. Both are accepted, so pick one.
  • The "*" wildcard includes table layers, but the docs say "every vector layer".

AGENTS.md

  • One notice per failure. Each failed item calls notify, so 500 bad files give 500 notices. It should be one notice with a count. (gp.rs:1097, confidence high)
  • Missing "test both ways" coverage. There is no test for the folder skip notice, for a clean run with no notice, or for dotted layer names.
  • Concerns already raised in earlier threads: none, since there were no prior reviews. I posted 7 inline comments.

Record failed batch inputs in history when input loading fails.

When read_path fails, run_tool_with returns at map_inputs(...)? before apply runs, so no history record is created for that item. The batch still counts the item as failed. Record the failure before returning, as apply does for run errors.

Remedy direction

Replace the ? at the map_inputs call in run_tool_with with an Err arm that calls apply(...) with the error. This adds the history record and returns the same error text. I did not write a diff because the borrow of s held by the map_inputs result was not verified against the compiler.

2361-2363: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Give the two folder-test inputs distinct geometry, and check each output against its own source.

batch_run_folder_scanning writes the same Point to both files. The assertions check only the counts and the output layer names. A batch run that feeds the first file's data to every input would still pass. The other batch tests do not check geometry either.

Give each file distinct coordinates. Then check that each output layer holds the geometry of its own source file.

- Around line 1076-1079: Validate batch_param against the selected tool’s
declared parameters before entering the batch loop; reject an unknown name with
an error instead of silently inserting it into each item’s parameters. Use the
tool specification and parameter symbols already available in this flow, and
preserve the existing behavior for valid parameters.
- Line 15: Update the gp.batch help text’s param default description to explain
that it auto-detects the tool’s first layer-kind parameter, falling back to
"input" when none exists; match the wording in docs/user-guide/analysis.md.
- Line 15: Update the gp.batch parameter description to declare the top-level
batch_param and output_pattern keys that the handler reads as fallbacks.
Preserve the existing param and outputPattern descriptions and include the
fallback keys so validation and parameter-documentation checks recognize them.
- Around line 771-774: Update the scalar Layer file-loading branch to check for
a same-named standalone table before reading the working-directory file. Reuse
the existing table lookup for snap.tables so the file is skipped when a table
named name exists, while preserving the other loading conditions.
- Around line 771-774: Prevent Output::File writes from overwriting files used
as inputs: track the file-input names discovered by inputs_of and check each
destination with names_file before writing, returning an error on a match. Pass
this input information from run_tool_with into apply or write_file_output, and
ensure the check also covers the output path used by gp.run.
- Around line 1030-1032: Update the folder enumeration logic in the batch
target-building flow to propagate errors from both `std::fs::read_dir` and
individual directory iterator entries instead of silently skipping them.
Preserve the existing file filtering, sorting, and target collection behavior
when the folder is read successfully.
- Around line 761-772: Update reaches to classify scalar layer parameter kinds
as file access when gp.run can fall back to reading a path, so the files
permission check applies to those reads. Preserve existing permission handling
for Path and VectorLayers and avoid requiring files permission when the input
resolves to a session layer.
- Around line 14-16: Update the `touches_files` check to include `gp.batch`
alongside `gp.run` when resolving the tool through `tool_id`. Preserve the
existing file-writing classification so batch runs using layer names are
recognized as file access.
- Around line 1073-1074: Update the batch output-name construction around
`base_name` and `out_name` so `{input}` uses the full name when the target is a
layer, preserving names such as `Cities.v2`; retain the existing stem behavior
for file targets. Use the batch command’s existing target classification to
distinguish layers from files.
- Line 1082: Update the gp.batch execution path around run_tool_with to handle
GeoLibre tools in web builds through the browser-supported asynchronous
execution path used by external_start, rather than invoking the wasm32 runner
that returns an error. Establish how to await and collect each tool’s result
while preserving native execution and existing batch history behavior.
- Around line 979-993: Update the parameter-kind selection for batch_param to
include ParamKind::VectorLayers so merge binds each batch item to its inputs
parameter. Before relying on this selection, verify that layer_list accepts a
single name string; if not, use the existing supported representation that binds
each item correctly without reusing the full inputs list.
- Around line 1084-1085: Update the batch output-name reporting around
`succeeded.push` and `output_names.push` to report each added layer’s applied
name, not the requested `out_name`. Use the added layer’s ID to retrieve its
final name, including any suffix assigned for collisions, and return those names
in `outputs`.
- Line 1079: In the batch export flow that builds out_name before inserting it
into the output map, track names already produced and check each name before
running its item. For duplicates, use the existing per-item failure and progress
handling to skip the export; otherwise record the name and continue.
- Around line 985-989: Update the gp.batch input-loading flow for
ParamKind::RasterLayer so raster file paths are loaded and made available to
MapInputs::raster before each batch item runs. Preserve lookup of already-loaded
map layers and ensure valid raster paths no longer fail as missing layer names.

Review comments at @docs/user-guide/analysis.md:
- Line 161: Remove the unsupported fixGeometries reference from the tool table,
Check and Fix section, and gp.run example unless a tool with that ID is actually
registered; if it is registered, ensure the registration makes the documented
lookup succeed.
- Around line 81-90: Update the work-limit paragraph for Viewshed, IDW
Interpolation, Kriging, and Kernel Density to state that caps apply only to runs
that cannot be stopped while running; explicitly preserve the exemption for
rustgis-cli run invoked with stdin and stderr attached to a terminal. Keep the
existing limits and desktop/web behavior clear.
- Around line 860-864: Update the Check Geometry output description to document
the `output` layer (default `<input>_check`) rather than a standalone validation
table. State that it contains only features with problems, retains their
attributes, adds the text fields `problem` and `detail`, and writes features
with non-finite coordinates without geometry; preserve the existing line-check
behavior description.

Code review

Four inline comments are posted. Three are new, and one re-raises an earlier concern whose code has moved.

Bugs

  • The batch's own progress never works: each item resets the shared Control to 0 via run_under (crates/analysis/src/lib.rs:488), so the PR's "macro progress" claim does not hold. Confidence high. Inline.
  • Re-raised: a misspelled param is silently ignored, so every item can run on the same layer and report success. Confidence medium-high. Inline.
  • merge (its input is VectorLayers) is not bound by the batch binder, so every item fails. Already raised, unchanged; left alone.
  • Batch runs of file-writing tools (SaveFile) are not refused. Each item queues a file export, queue_file caps pending downloads at 8, so later items fail, and outputs lists names that are not layers. Confidence medium; I did not trace the browser and desktop delivery paths.

Security

  • gp.batch reads any non-layer inputs entry that is a file, but the plugin reaches check and the task touches_files check classify it by tool kind and path shape, so a bare file name passes without the files permission. Confidence medium-high. Inline. This is new code, though the same gap exists for gp.run.

Performance

  • No findings.

Quality

  • Nits, not posted inline, for the release quality pass: the "folder ignored" notice tests is_some() but the logic tests for non-empty targets; the summary says "complete" after a cancel; a failed item still reserves its output name, so a later name gets a suffix with a "collided" notice that is misleading.
  • Missing tests for the notices the code emits: the "inputs and folder" notice, the output-collision notice, and the skipped-input notice.

AGENTS.md

  • Never silent: non-string or blank inputs entries and a non-object params are dropped without a notice. Confidence high. Inline.
  • Test-both-ways: the notices above lack their lossy-input tests.

Already raised, left alone: 22 prior threads. 16 are resolved or no longer apply because the diff changed (the doc-deletion threads refer to content this PR no longer touches). Six are still open and unchanged (the merge binding, raster file paths, the GeoLibre web path, and three gp.run file-access items), so I did not re-post them. One re-raised with new detail (the param validation).

successful `Output::Update` results from `calculateGeometry` are retained or
exported before the temporary input layer is removed. Preserve cleanup for cases
where no successful update needs to be saved, and use the existing
update-persistence path rather than introducing a new API.

Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/items.rs:
- Around line 780-781: Update touches_files so imported-task checks account for
bare relative file names used by gp.batch, which can otherwise pass the guard
and be read from the working directory. Because touches_files cannot distinguish
project-layer names from file names, establish the policy for preserving layer
batching versus blocking these inputs before changing the guard; continue
rejecting absolute and ../ paths.

Bugs

  • Batch cancellation never reaches the running item. batch() builds its own Control, and nothing outside the tests can cancel it. Each item also runs under a separate item_control, so a cancel that does arrive is not seen by the in-flight item. The PR body's "aborts the active item in-flight" is not true. Confidence: high. Inline comment posted at gp.rs:1183.
  • Standalone tables lose their dotted name. A table Roads.2020 falls through to file_stem, so its output is Roads_buffer. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted at gp.rs:1123, with a suggestion.
  • Folder notice can be false. "running 'inputs' and ignoring 'folder'" fires even when inputs yields no targets, and then the folder is scanned. Confidence: high. Inline comment posted at gp.rs:1008.

Security

  • No new issue found. The read gate now covers every non-wildcard inputs entry (plugins.rs reaches, items.rs touches_files), which closes the bare-name bypass raised earlier.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. Folder and input lists are unbounded, and each file is loaded whole, one at a time. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • Never silent: the file reader's report is discarded (Ok((dataset, _report))), though inputs_of forwards the same messages. Confidence: high. Inline comment posted at gp.rs:1144.
  • One notice per kind: output-name collisions notify once per item. Confidence: high. Inline comment posted at gp.rs:1134.
  • Nits, grouped:
    • The wildcard check is repeated in gp.rs, items.rs and plugins.rs; one helper would do.
    • gp.rs shadows s (the Session) with |s| in the wildcard closure.
    • The docs omit that inputs also takes a single string.
    • run_batch_with is pub but only tests use it.

AGENTS.md

  • Screenshots link to a fork's raw.githubusercontent.com branch, not opengeos/rustgis-assets.
  • The PR body's "Macro progress" and "in-flight cancel" claims are not accurate for the code as written.

Already raised, left alone (no new post): the file-input output-name collision and the lost Output::Update on temporary layers, both still present, plus the GeoLibre-on-web and bare-name policy threads. The earlier progress-reset concern no longer applies, because the item now runs on its own control. Its replacement is the cancellation finding above. The earlier security-gate and missing-param threads are fixed in this head.

Preserve file-reader notices.

The new single-string input path can load a file here, but _report discards its reader notices. A GeoJSON reader can report skipped features or CRS problems, so the batch can report success for incomplete data without warning. Forward the notices with the input name and retain them in the run history. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Record a replayable file input.

For native file targets, history stores the temporary layer name in the individual gp.run record. The batch removes that layer after the item completes. History replay and task.new with fromHistory then cannot resolve the recorded input. This affects single-string inputs, input arrays, and native folder inputs.

Preserve the original file path in the recorded command, or add a supported batch-level replay record that retains the file paths.

Code review

Bugs

  • No new bugs confirmed.
  • Still open from an earlier thread, not re-posted because the line hasn't changed and nobody has replied: the joinField filter at gp.rs:1074-1075 still omits key, target_key, target_field, duplicateStrategy and duplicate_strategy, which normalize_join_field_params (crates/analysis/src/tools.rs:5833) accepts. A batch that uses them gets a false "unrecognised parameter" notice. Confidence high that it is still present.

Security

  • No new issues. I checked bare file names and folder/inputs classification in touches_files and reaches, symlinks (DirEntry::file_type doesn't follow them), the wildcard with a folder, and the Output::File path. The Output::File producers are built-in SaveFile tools, which writes_files already refuses. Confidence high.

Performance

  • Nit only: base_params is cloned three times per item (item_params, record_params, and the record_json command). The params are small JSON, so this is negligible. Confidence high.

Quality

  • Posted one inline comment at gp.rs:1899: gp.run now records a failed History entry when map_inputs fails. Before this PR it returned early. This is unmentioned in the PR and untested. Low severity, confidence medium.
  • Nit: a failed batch emits two error notices, the aggregate "Batch 'x': N failed" and the summary "complete: a succeeded, N failed". Confidence high.
  • Maintainability: run_batch_with is about 500 lines inside gp.rs, which is now over 3,400 lines. Splitting it into its own module would help, but that is a refactor and can wait for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • The PR body's screenshots are hosted on the author's fork (raw.githubusercontent.com/quanguet0409/RustGIS/assets/...), not in opengeos/rustgis-assets as the Assets section specifies. Confidence medium.
  • Checked and fine: no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code (the batch test module is #[cfg(test)]), no unsafe, wasm-only unused_mut cases are gated, notices go through s.notify with counts, ROADMAP and GEOLIBRE_PARITY are updated, and there are no new dependencies.

Earlier threads: 131 are visible in prior-reviews.json, and 22 more were cut off. I re-raised none of them. Four are unresolved: the items.rs:898 clone concern (now effectively addressed by Cow), the joinField list above (still valid), the silently dropped param/batch_param and outputPattern/output_pattern aliases at gp.rs:1018 (still valid, line unchanged), and an outdated analysis.md comment (addressed). I could not run the test suite or clippy here, so the PR's own test claims are unverified.

Code review

I read the full diff and the whole prior-review history (about 150 threads: 129 in the file plus 25 cut off). Most substantive concerns in those threads are addressed in this head. I found no new correctness, security, or AGENTS.md violations, so the findings below are quality points. I left the other earlier concerns alone because they were already raised.

Bugs

  • None new. I checked the file-input temp-layer lifecycle, the active-layer restore, cancellation ordering, table collision handling, the all-failed error path, and the wasm cfg gating, and found no new defect.
  • Low: padded layer names are not trimmed, while padded file paths are. " Cities " fails with "no layer named" rather than being matched. It is reported as a failure, so it is not silent. Confidence: medium.
  • Low: when a file item is cancelled mid-run, the break skips the per-history reader-warning record. The warnings still reach the aggregate notice and warnings. Confidence: medium-low.

Security

  • None new. The gate changes in items.rs and plugins.rs match the documented policy, and the wildcard path's early return in reaches is deliberate (the "folder" help text would otherwise trip PLACE_KEYS).

Performance

  • Nothing that matters at realistic batch sizes. The per-item messages.clone() is noted under Quality.

Quality (inline comments posted)

  • gp.rs:3390: the symlink test passes vacuously when link creation fails, which happens on Windows without privilege. Confidence: medium.
  • gp.rs:984: run_batch_with is about 800 lines. Splitting it would help review. Per AGENTS.md this can wait for the release quality pass. Confidence: high.
  • gp.rs:1871: two positional bools in run_tool_internal are unclear at call sites. Confidence: medium.
  • gp.rs:2175: the table-rename block is duplicated in the OutputLayer::Table arm, and the gp_history 500-entry trim appears four times. Confidence: medium.
  • items.rs:875: the comment about gp.run now sits above the new gp.batch block. Confidence: high.
  • tools.rs:5834: JOIN_FIELD_ALIASES duplicates keys read by normalize_join_field_params, which is a drift risk. Confidence: medium.
  • gp.rs:1314: an unnecessary msg.clone(). Confidence: high.
  • gp.rs:2244: result.messages.clone() runs for every tool call. Confidence: medium.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the points I checked: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, remove(0) guarded by a length check, notices aggregated with counts, Err on all-fail (matching the docs), and wasm gating present. Tests are the only place with unwrap.

Code review

I reviewed gp.batch in crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs (run_batch_with and run_tool_internal/apply_inner), the items.rs and plugins.rs permission gates, the history change, the analysis helper and the docs. I checked the non-test code for unwrap, expect, panic, unsafe and indexing; there are none. I also checked the drop and restore paths for temporary layers and active_layer, and the wasm cfg gates by reading them. I did not compile or run the tests.

Bugs

  • No new correctness bugs found. I checked the temp-layer cleanup on the error and cancel paths, active_layer restoration, collision naming and history recording, and found them consistent.

Security

  • No new issues. The permission classification in batch_touches_files, reaches and touches_files is consistent, and any file read is classified as file access. (Confidence: medium-high.)

Performance

  • distinct_tool_messages and the reader-warning aggregation do a linear find per message, so they go quadratic if a tool emits a distinct message per item. (Low, confidence: low.)
  • The result's warnings array gets one entry per reader message per item, with no cap, while notices are aggregated. (Low, confidence: medium.)

Quality

  • Inline comment posted on gp.rs:1146: the batch_param check ignores joinField aliases that is_accepted_param accepts, so "param": "input" is refused. (Low-medium, confidence: medium.)
  • Folder scans include .json, so a folder with package.json or tsconfig.json gets failed items. (Low, confidence: medium.)
  • Unreadable directory entries use error severity, although the run continues. (Nit, confidence: medium.)
  • On cancel, an in-flight error goes into errors and the summary notice, not into failed as the thread reply says. The behaviour is not silent, but the reply does not match the code. (Low, confidence: medium.)
  • Batch failure is reported three times: the failure notice, the summary notice, and the returned Err. (Nit, confidence: medium.)

AGENTS.md

  • The PR body links its screenshots to a personal fork's assets branch. AGENTS.md says screenshots live in opengeos/rustgis-assets and are served from assets.rustgis.app. (Confidence: medium.)

I left alone the open threads on the same points: the run_batch_with size and refactor, the run_tool_internal boolean flags, duplicated table rename and history-cap code, the extra clone of messages, the misplaced comment in items.rs, JOIN_FIELD_ALIASES drift and the mid-file pub use, the conflicting-alias warning, the reader warnings lost on the all-fail Err, the symlink and sub-folder docs, and the cancel-reach and folder notice. Of the 135 earlier review entries, 11 are still open and I left all of them alone. The rest are resolved or outdated, and I did not re-raise them because the code they point at is unchanged or the replies answer them.

Hi @Mavrick-F,

Thank you for the static review! We have addressed both issues and updated the roadmap:

  1. Reader Warnings & Diagnostics Retention:

    • Rather than capping at three messages, reader warnings across all files are aggregated by warning kind with counts and affected inputs in session notices (e.g. gp.batch: 2 input(s) had dropped Z or M values (f1.geojson, f2.geojson)).
    • In addition, the full diagnostics are preserved in each file input's replayable history record (GpRecord::messages) and returned in the batch result under "warnings": [{"input": ..., "warning": ...}].
  2. All-Failed Batch Error Handling:

    • In accordance with "Unusable results are errors", gp.batch now returns an Err when no items succeed (num_ok == 0), including individual failure reasons in the error message (e.g. Batch 'buffer' failed: all 2 inputs failed: ...).
    • Succeeded, failed, and attempted counts alongside the "errors" array are properly preserved.
  3. Roadmap & Upstream Sync:

    • ROADMAP.md has been updated with Batch runs: one tool over many layers or a folder of files ([#1458](https://github.com/opengeos/RustGIS/pull/1458)) under Underway, and GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md has been updated accordingly.
    • Merged the latest origin/main into the branch (cleanly integrating the upstream execution cache).
    • All review threads from GitHub Actions and CodeRabbit have been addressed and resolved. Re-triggered CodeRabbit review for the current head commit (b0665eda).

All tests, clippy, and layering checks are passing cleanly. Ready for merge!

Bug (confidence: high, severity: low). The browser build skips the wildcard error and rejects an empty folder. The native folder fallback is gated on !is_wildcard and trims the value (lines 1243 and 1290 onward). This wasm check has neither gate. So on wasm, {"inputs":"*","folder":"x"} on a map with no vector layers returns "folder batch runs are not supported in the browser" instead of the '*' matched no vector layers error. ps returns Some("") for an empty string, so "folder": "" also gets the browser error, while native ignores it.

Suggested change
if targets.is_empty() && ps(p, "folder").is_some() {
if targets.is_empty() && !is_wildcard && ps(p, "folder").is_some_and(|f| !f.trim().is_empty()) {

Line 1243 has the same empty-string issue: "folder": "" with inputs gets a spurious "both 'inputs' and 'folder'" notice. Not checked on wasm, since the wasm build can't run the native tests here.

Code review

Reviewed the full PR diff (gp.rs gp.batch runner, items.rs/plugins.rs file-access gating, analysis alias helper, history replay, docs) against pr-context/AGENTS.md. I did not compile or run tests; the wasm finding rests on reading the cfg blocks.

Bugs

  • Browser build skips the wildcard error and rejects an empty folder (crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:1352, posted inline). The wasm folder check lacks the !is_wildcard gate and trimming that the native path has. inputs: "*" with a folder on an empty map gives the wrong message, and "folder": "" gets the browser error. Also "folder": "" with inputs raises a spurious "both 'inputs' and 'folder'" notice (line 1243). Confidence: high. Severity: low.

Security

  • Nothing new. I checked the touches_files, reaches and layer_name_left_out gating for gp.batch. Folder scans skip symlinks, and wildcard runs only classify as file access when the tool or a static parameter names a file. Layer-name inputs also require file-access approval, which the docs state; that is a usability trade-off, not a hole. Confidence: medium.

Performance

  • No cap on the number of items in inputs or a folder scan. Each item runs a full tool and history record, so a very large folder runs unbounded. AGENTS.md asks for clamped sizes. Confidence: low, since this is a design gap rather than a demonstrated failure.

Quality

  • run_batch_with is about 830 lines. The folder scan and the per-item logic would read better as separate functions. Confidence: high. This is a quality point for the release pass.
  • The all-fail thread reply says run_batch_with "preserved the Ok(ret) result with succeeded: 0". The code now returns Err (around line 907), matching the docs. The reply is stale and should be corrected. I did not re-raise the concern. Confidence: high.
  • The non-UTF-8 test ignores the result of std::fs::write (gp.rs:3602). A failed write would show up as a confusing assertion failure. Confidence: medium. Minor.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect, panic, unsafe or indexing in new non-test code that I could see. Notice-with-count patterns follow the Never-silent rule. The new command is registered, so hostile_params_never_panic covers it. ROADMAP and GEOLIBRE_PARITY are updated. No new dependencies. Labels follow the existing gp.run style.

Earlier review threads: 131 threads on this PR, all resolved. I read the first ~680 lines of prior-reviews.json in full and searched the rest by keyword and state. I left alone every concern that was already raised, including the JOIN_FIELD_ALIASES drift and the in-place calculateGeometry case, which was fixed in 0df3ea3. I re-raised none.

Make the batch input take precedence over equivalent aliases.

If param is target_layer and params.input is set, each joinField run can process the same static layer instead of its batch input. Remove or override only the aliases equivalent to the selected batch parameter, and preserve replayable history.

Report every tool loss message in batch notices.

Three distinct routine messages can fill the sample before Buffer reports skipped features. The loss then appears in history but not in a notice or the batch result. Report tool messages with their affected inputs instead of capping them at three. Add tests for lossy and clean inputs.

Block file inputs in imported gp.run tasks.

On desktop, an imported merge step can pass cities.geojson in params.inputs. If no project layer has that name, inputs_of reads the file despite the imported-task restriction.

Reject unresolved VectorLayers inputs for imported tasks before the read. Keep project-layer inputs allowed, and add a regression test for a bare file name.

Bug (low severity, confidence: medium). A batch item whose inputs fail to map leaves no gp_history entry.

For a non-file input (a layer or table name that exists), command is None. The guard here then returns Err(e) before apply_inner, so no GpRecord is written. Failures in run_with and in file reads do get a record. The PR description says each batch run is logged in gp_history, so this is a gap against that claim. Example: inputs: ["Elevation"] (a raster layer) for a vector tool, where map_inputs rejects it.

Suggested fix: keep the gp.run behaviour (run_tool_with passes record_params: None) and record batch items:

Suggested change
if command.is_none() {
if record_params.is_none() {
return Err(e);
}

Not compiled or run here. The is_file_input and command logic is from reading the diff.

Code review

Bugs

  • Low severity, medium confidence: a batch item whose inputs fail to map (an existing layer of the wrong kind, for example) returns before apply_inner, so it has no gp_history entry. The PR says every run is logged. Posted inline on crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs:2028 with a suggestion.

Security

  • No new issues. I checked the file-access gating for gp.batch: touches_files, reaches (including the early return, which skips nothing it needs because gp.batch is not in REACHES_FILES or READS_FILES), the wildcard and folder paths, and the history replay. The gate holds for the cases I traced.

Performance

  • Low: distinct_tool_messages and reader_warnings are scanned linearly for each item, so a large batch with per-item messages is quadratic. Not worth blocking on.
  • Low: apply_inner clones result.messages for every item, including gp.run. This is already noted in an earlier thread.

Quality

  • Doc comment on run_batch_with (gp.rs:1089) says "with cancellation and progress reporting". Progress reporting was removed, so the comment is stale.
  • run_tool_internal takes two positional bools. Already raised, left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found in the new non-test code: no unwrap, expect, panic, indexing or unsafe; notices are aggregated with counts; file-input loss is reported; wasm gating is in place.
  • tl! is not used anywhere in crates/engine, so the translatable-text rule does not apply to these notices.

Already raised, left alone

  • Four open threads still apply to the current code and I did not repeat them: the ungated wasm folder check (gp.rs:1351), joinField alias precedence over the batch input (analysis/src/lib.rs:391), the tool-message sample cap (gp.rs:1787), and imported gp.run reading bare file names in inputs (items.rs:854).
  • About 90 resolved threads are visible in the staged file. The file itself says 38 more were left out, and I could not read them.

Reviewed without running: I did not compile, run the tests, or run cargo fmt/clippy. Every finding comes from reading the diff and the surrounding source.
