fix(layout): refuse a colour the element kind doesn't have (#1455) - #1459
layout.addElement and layout.update accepted "color", "fill" and "outline" for every element kind and silently dropped the ones a kind doesn't draw. They are now refused before anything changes, with a message naming the kinds that take the key, the same way font/fallback (ONLY_TEXT_FONT) and radius (ONLY_RECTANGLE_RADIUS) already are. null still means "not given".
Which kinds take which key, read from what each command actually applies:
A map frame's extent-indicator and grid colours stay in the extentIndicator/grid objects of layout.update; a top-level color on a map frame is refused.
One related fix: adding a rectangle, ellipse or circle dropped "outline" (only "color" set it), while layout.update already took "outline" for them. Adding now takes "outline", with "color" as the fallback, as updating does.
The .params() strings of both commands and docs/user-guide/layouts.md say which kinds take each key.
No change to command ids, the data model or the .rgis format. The UI only sends these keys to kinds that take them (checked layoutview.rs and ribbon.rs), so nothing in the app is newly refused.
Testing
New layout_colours_are_refused_for_elements_without_them (engine): for each key, kinds that don't take it are refused in both commands with the layouts byte-identical afterwards (an update that also renames proves nothing is applied); null is accepted; every kind that takes a key succeeds; a rectangle's outline wins over color when adding; a text's color is applied.
cargo test -p rustgis-engine: 747 passed. mbtiles_archives_become_tile_layers failed once under heavy load and passes alone, with and without this change.
Layout elements now reject non-null color, fill, and outline settings that aren’t supported for their type. Null values are treated as omitted.
For shapes, an explicitly provided outline takes precedence over color.
Documentation
Clarified which layout elements support color, fill, and outline, including differences between adding and updating elements and the precedence of shape outline settings.

layout.addElement and layout.update accepted color, fill and outline for
every element kind and dropped those a kind doesn't draw without a word.
They are now refused before anything changes, naming the kinds that take
them, as font and radius already are; null still means not given.
Adding a rectangle, ellipse or circle also takes outline now (color as
the fallback), as layout.update already did.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Layout commands now reject non-null color, fill, and outline values that the target element kind does not support. Shape creation uses outline before color. Tests and documentation cover the property rules.
layout.addElement rejects unsupported color properties. For rectangles, ellipses, and circles, outline takes precedence over color. Tests and documentation cover supported and unsupported properties.
Update rules and validation crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
layout.update rejects unsupported color properties. Tests check rejected and accepted values, including null values.

Explanation
[#1455] Both commands reject unsupported non-null colour keys before mutation and name the accepted kinds. The gives helper treats null as absent. Adding shapes now applies outline with color as fallback. The merge-base command descriptions already identify scale-bar color and fill support; the new checks preserve it. The engine test covers refusal, unchanged layouts, null values and accepted keys.

Quality (misplaced doc comment): the colorbar doc comment ("A colorbar shows a raster's colour scale…") now sits above the new layout_colours_are_refused_for_elements_without_them test. layout_colorbars_follow_a_raster (around line 5860) has lost its doc comment, and the new test describes colorbars. Moving the existing doc back is the fix; the new test needs its own comment.
Suggested change
/// A colorbar shows a raster's colour scale on a layout (#326): added and edited through
/// A layout element refuses a colour, fill or outline its kind doesn't draw, before anything
/// changes: added and edited through commands, with the layouts unchanged after a refusal.
Then put the original colorbar comment back directly above #[test] of layout_colorbars_follow_a_raster.
Per AGENTS.md this is a quality point, so it can wait for the release quality pass if you prefer. It is small, though, and it is the only doc that goes wrong here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Test coverage: the PR says "every kind that takes a key succeeds", but the extent indicator's color is never accepted here. The template has one map frame, and of defaults to that same frame, so the call always fails with "of must be another map frame". The is_none_or assertion also passes whenever the call succeeds, so the success path is never checked.
Suggest a second frame, as the test near line 6953 does, so the add is really exercised:
let other = s.run("layout.addFrame",&json!({"x":150,"y":150,"w":40,"h":40})).unwrap()["element"].as_u64().unwrap();let ind = s.run("layout.addElement",&json!({"kind":"extentIndicator","frame": other,"of": find(&s,"mapFrame"),"color": red})).unwrap();assert!(ind.is_object());
Then assert the frame's extent_color is #B91C1C, as the test near line 6970 does.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 6ae84d9. The test adds a second frame with layout.addFrame, adds the extent indicator on it with color, and checks the frame's extent_of and extent_color (#B91C1C).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit, for the release quality pass): this doc comment is hard to follow. "added also an extent indicator's or a grid's" reads as a dangling clause. Something like:
Suggested change
/// Colours are refused for the elements that don't draw them, as a family is, so a script doesn't
/// Colours are refused for the elements that don't draw them, as a family is, so a script doesn't
/// take them as applied: "color" is a text's, a line's, an arrow's or a shape's outline (a
/// rectangle's or an ellipse's), and, when adding, also an extent indicator's or a grid's.
Bugs: None found. I checked each refusal against the code that applies the key. Colours are applied for every kind the new lists allow: text and dynamicText share one arm, grid colour goes through grid_params, and extent-indicator colour through indicator_style. Refusals return before any mutation. The UI callers (layoutview.rs, ribbon.rs) send colour keys only to kinds that take them. Grid and extent-indicator colours are nested objects, so the top-level check does not catch them. Confidence: high.
Security: None found.
Performance: None found.
Quality:
The colorbar doc comment now sits above the new test, and layout_colorbars_follow_a_raster has lost its doc. Inline comment posted on tests.rs:5752. Confidence: high. Under AGENTS.md this can wait for the release quality pass.
The ONLY_COLOR_ADDED doc comment reads awkwardly ("added also an extent indicator's or a grid's"). Inline nit posted on layout.rs:2644. Confidence: medium.
The docs sentence in layouts.md ("as is outline, which wins when both are given") is also hard to parse. Not posted inline. Confidence: medium.
Test coverage:
The PR says "every kind that takes a key succeeds", but the extent indicator's color is never accepted in the test. The template has only one map frame, so the call always fails, and the is_none_or assertion passes on success without checking it. Inline comment posted on tests.rs:5814, with a fix using layout.addFrame. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md: No violations found. Refusals are errors, not silent drops, which matches the "Never silent" rule. The test covers both refused and accepted inputs. The change touches no UI text, assets, dependencies, or wasm-sensitive code.
Prior reviews: There were no existing threads, so no earlier concerns were left alone.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base d733327 to PR head 88fcac6).
Compare the null result with the omitted-key result.
The assertion at line 5791 passes when the null call succeeds, or when it fails with any message that lacks "take a". A null rejected with an unrelated error, such as "color must be a string", still passes. A regression that rejects null this way would go unnoticed. Compare the null result with the omitted-key result instead.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/tests.rs around lines 5787 - 5791:
Update the null-value assertion in the test around `layout.addElement` to
compare its error result with the result when the same key is omitted. Require
null to behave exactly like omission, while preserving the existing kind and key
context in assertion failures.
Assert the stored outline for ellipse and circle creation.
The new test does not check the stored outline for ellipse or circle creation. It calls layout.addElement with ("circle", "outline") and ("ellipse", "fill"), then asserts only that each call succeeds. The stored-outline assertion covers only the rectangle. If the ellipse and circle branch in crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs ignored outline, this test would still pass.

Extend the `layout.addElement` test to verify the stored outline for both
ellipse and circle elements, not just that creation succeeds. Create each shape
with the outline value and assert that `outline` returns the expected color;
preserve the existing rectangle assertion and use the test’s established helpers
and color setup.

… a fill
opengeos#1452 gave the scale bar a colour and a fill, so both are allowed for it when adding and
editing (an outline is still refused). Review: the new test has its own doc comment and the
colorbar test has its comment back, the extent indicator's colour is checked on a second
frame, and the doc comment and user-guide paragraph read more plainly.

Quality (doc accuracy, nit): in the layout.update params string, the "outline"? entry reads (northArrow, rectangle, ellipse, and a scaleBar's fill; ...), which says an outline applies to a scale bar's fill. The "fill"? entry has no description at all. Suggested wording, to be made in the string itself: "fill"? (northArrow, rectangle, ellipse; a scaleBar's light divisions; refused for other elements) and "outline"? (northArrow, rectangle, ellipse; refused for other elements; for a rectangle or ellipse, color sets it when outline is not given). The string is too long to quote as a suggestion block, so this is prose only. Per AGENTS.md this is a quality point and can wait for the release quality pass.
Bugs: None found. I checked the new refusals against the kind lists in add_element and update, the restyle paths, and the colour-application code. Refusals run before any mutation, the add and update kind lists agree, and null is treated as not given. The UI (layoutview.rs, ribbon.rs) sends color, fill and outline only to kinds that take them. Grid colour goes through the grid object, and extent-indicator colour through extentIndicator. No existing test or caller passes a refused key. Confidence: high.
Security: None. The change adds only validation and no new input paths.
Performance: None.
Quality:
crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:94 (layout.update params string): the "outline"? entry says (northArrow, rectangle, ellipse, and a scaleBar's fill; …), which suggests outline applies to a scale bar's fill. The "fill"? entry has no description. Posted inline as a nit. Confidence: high.
The kind lists are duplicated across ONLY_COLOR_ADDED, ONLY_COLOR_UPDATED, ONLY_FILL and ONLY_OUTLINE, and the two color checks can drift apart. This is a maintainability point for the release quality pass. Confidence: medium.
PR description: the table omits scale bars from the color and fill rows, and says "Scale bars take none of the three on main". The main docs and restyle already accept scale bar colour and fill, so the table and that sentence are inaccurate. This is not a code issue. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md: No violations found. The new code has no unwrap, expect or indexing outside tests. Refusals are errors, not silent drops. Both ways are tested. docs/user-guide/layouts.md is updated. No UI change, so no screenshot is needed.
Prior review threads: Three earlier concerns (the doc comment wording, the misplaced colorbar doc comment, and the extent-indicator test path) were all answered by the PR author and fixed in 6ae84d9. I checked the current code and did not re-raise any of them. I left 3 earlier concerns alone.
