Part of #1291 step 3 (tracked in #1252): Export Map and Export Layout leave the UI thread, after Export Features and Export Raster in #1433.

What changes

On the desktop, Export Map (PNG) and Export Layout (PNG, PDF, SVG) now draw on a thread of their own, with the status bar's spinner, progress and Cancel from #1433.

  • They draw a copy. Export Map clones the active map, and Export Layout clones the project into a fresh Session and runs the existing layout_bytes / layout_svg on it. Moving the map, or editing or closing the layout while it draws, doesn't change the file. A map series steps through its pages on the copy.
  • Cancel stops between pages and stops the map's wait for tiles. For the tile wait, rustgis_tiles::cache::wait_for_news_unless gives up as soon as the export is cancelled. A cancelled export writes nothing, and a file it was to replace stays as it was. rustgis_data::progress::{begin, step, check} are now public, so the engine and render crates can use them.
  • Progress: a map series PDF counts its pages. Export Map and one-page layouts show only the spinner.
  • Notices: they are the same as before, in the same order and with the same severity. The copy's notices are said again on the real session when the export lands, in full. A layout export that fails still says the warnings it gave first, then why it failed: an export's Then can now return an error.
  • Style view: while a style added with its own view ("view": true) is still loading, the app runs Export Map where it is called, as before, so the export waits for the map to move there.
  • Scripts: scripts, models, the AI Assistant and the command line still wait for the file (write_here). Their layout exports also draw on a copy, so they give the same output and notices.

Not moved: printing a layout, and the exports of reports, presentations and animations.

Tests

  • exports_run_on_another_thread:
    • Map PNG and layout PNG, PDF and SVG exports run on another thread and give the same bytes, answer and notices as when run where they're called.
    • A cancelled run writes nothing.
    • Moving the map or removing the layouts after the start leaves the file unchanged.
    • A failing layout export reports the same error when it lands.
  • export_map_and_export_layout_draw_on_a_thread (UI): Export Map and Export Layout start a job, land it and write the file.

ci_fast passed everywhere except mapgpu::tests::parity_vector_tile_meshes. That test failed once in the full parallel run and passes on its own (run twice). It compares GPU and CPU drawing; this change only touches the tile wait when an export is cancelled.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Desktop map and layout exports now run in the background. Multi-page layout exports show progress and can be canceled.
    • Exports use the map or layout state captured when they start; canceling leaves existing files unchanged.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Export failures are now reported, and rendering can stop waiting for tiles when an export is canceled.
  • Documentation
    • Updated sharing guidance to describe background exports, snapshots, and cancellation. Progress bars are not shown for map exports or one-page layouts.

… step 3)

On the desktop, Export Map and Export Layout (PNG, PDF, SVG) now draw on a thread of their
own, with the status bar's progress and Cancel that Export Features and Export Raster have
(opengeos#1433). Export Map draws a copy of the map, and Export Layout a copy of the project, so
moving the map or editing the layout meanwhile doesn't change the file.

- Cancel also stops the map's wait for tiles (`wait_for_news_unless`); a cancelled export
writes nothing. A map series PDF counts its pages in the progress bar.
- A layout export that fails still says the warnings it gave first, then why it failed.
- While a style added with its own view loads, Export Map runs before the window goes on,
as the command waits for it.
- Printing, and the exports of reports, presentations and animations, are unchanged.

Walkthrough

Map and layout exports now run as background jobs on supported native builds. The workflow captures export state, checks cancellation, writes output atomically, and reports completion results. Tests and documentation cover export formats, state snapshots, and cancellation behavior.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code in exports.rs, layout.rs, share.rs, progress.rs, render/src/lib.rs, tiles/src/cache.rs, exportjob.rs, engine/src/lib.rs (notice and diagnostic paths) and diagnostics.rs. I checked the AGENTS.md rules on panics, unsafe, layering, wasm, and the Session::notify / warn reporting path. The new code has no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test paths, and the wasm branches compile-shape correctly. Features is Arc-backed, so the Map and Project clones on the UI thread are cheap. I did not build or run the tests.

Bugs

  • Export Map and Export Layout now land from the app outside Session::run, so their notices are recorded in troubleshooting history under "Application" instead of the command id. Notice text and severity are unchanged. Confidence ~60%. (crates/engine/src/cmd/exports.rs:68)

Security

  • No findings. The new paths write only the requested file, and write_atomic and the cancel check run before the write.

Performance

  • No findings. Project and map clones are shallow for feature data, and the export runs off the UI thread apart from those clones.

Quality

  • The layout notice severities are paired with notices by position across two separately capped lists. This works today, but nothing enforces the one-to-one invariant. Confidence ~45%. (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:3508)
  • Nits, for the release quality pass: the //! doc at exports.rs:1–2 is about 140 columns; the IN_BACKGROUND closure wrappers look redundant but are needed for the &mut to & coercion, so a short comment would help; the rewrapped doc at layout.rs:3341–3343 ends with an orphaned "once.".

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The format-error check for layout exports now runs at start rather than run time, which is the intended behaviour and is covered by the test.

Test coverage

  • The cancel-while-waiting-for-tiles path in complete and wait_for_news_unless is not exercised, because the cancel test uses an offline map. Confidence ~50%. (crates/render/src/lib.rs:5598)

I posted three inline comments: exports.rs:68, layout.rs:3508 and render/src/lib.rs:5598.

Earlier review threads: none exist on this PR, so no earlier concerns were skipped.

28052-28055: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Add a cancellation case that runs the export before cancelling it.

The new export cases call control.cancel() before run.run. Such a run never enters the map tile-wait loop, and it never reaches a second layout page. These cases therefore cannot show that a cancelled export stops early.

Cover the mid-run path in one of these ways:

  • For a multi-page layout PDF, cancel after the first page is drawn. Then measure the pages actually drawn through a channel other than the progress probe. Progress counts alone cannot detect removal of the per-page progress::step call, because that call also performs the count.
  • If the test harness can keep a map tile request pending, cancel during that wait. Assert that run.run returns the cancellation error without waiting for the 60-second render budget.

28123-28126: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Cover warning replay on a failed layout export.

The failure case at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:28123-28126 checks only the returned error string. Removing the notice replay in export_work (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:3493-3525) leaves that error unchanged, so the test would still pass.

notices_since returns Notice values that hold only text and error. A warning is stored with error set to false, so its severity is not visible through notices_since. To assert severity, read the diagnostics history that export_work uses.

Add a layout export that emits a warning before a write that fails. Assert the warning text through notices_since, and assert its Severity::Warning through the diagnostics history. Pair it with a clean export that produces no warning.

147-155: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Add a test that checks where map and layout drawing runs.

The UI test export_map_and_export_layout_draw_on_a_thread and the engine test exports_run_on_another_thread do not record the thread where drawing runs. A later change that moves png_of or layout drawing into export_start can still pass both tests. Current code draws inside the Work closures, so this gap does not affect present behavior.

Suggested approach: add a render hook or a blocking render fixture. Assert that export_start returns before drawing starts. Alternatively, record the drawing thread ID in the hook and assert that it differs from the caller's thread. No such hook exists in the repository, so this approach needs new test infrastructure.

…ch the live layers

- A streamed layer's read under way stays with the live map (`Map::detached`): the copy and
the map shared it, and the one that didn't take it waited for it forever.
- A source that failed on the copy is marked on its live layer, unless the layer was removed
or opened from elsewhere meanwhile; a failed map export also says its warnings first.
- Notices keep their severity, so the copy's are said again without pairing them with the
history; what a landed export says is filed under its command in the history.
- Export Map on the window's thread (a style's view loading) is refused while another export
runs, and the guide says it runs there.

Code review

Checked the diff against AGENTS.md, read the surrounding code for the export, source, render and tile paths, and verified the threads already on the PR. No crash paths, security issues or silent data losses found in the new code. Notable things I checked and found correct: the diagnostics fix in export_land, the source-failure marking in drawn, the streamed-layer detach_read (exports read blocking, so the copy reads for itself), and the cancel paths.

Bugs

  • Export Map's copy does not keep the worldview it started with: the world outline is drawn from the global worldview at draw time, so a change mid-export can mismatch borders. Confidence ~50%. Re-raised on crates/engine/src/cmd/share.rs:199, because the line moved and the problem remains.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • layout.export clones the whole project, then clones each map a second time in detached() (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs around line 3492). Confidence ~70%, low impact.

Quality

  • Grouped nits on crates/engine/src/cmd/exports.rs:30: the &mut Session Start type with wrapper closures that aren't needed, the said parameter shadowing said(), and an over-long header line.
  • No test checks that a warning (named fonts, pictured pages) from a landed layout export keeps its Warning severity. Confidence ~60%.

AGENTS.md

  • The PR body has no screenshots, although the export status bar now covers Export Map and Export Layout. AGENTS.md asks for screenshots for any visible change. Confidence ~60%.
  • "Test both ways": the severity replay on the thread path is only covered for plain notices (see Quality).

Already raised, left alone: 8 earlier threads. Of these, the diagnostic-source, source-failure, shared-Pending, sync Export Map block, severity-by-position and sharing.md concerns are addressed in the code. Two remain open and unchanged: the render cancel-wait test coverage and the export tile priority.

A source error from the export's copy is marked on the live layer only when the live source
is still the same open (`SourceLayer::same_opening`: the same handle or opening slot, path
and table), so a layer reopened meanwhile (a replaced GeoPackage table) isn't given the old
open's error. The export starts take `&Session` again.

Bugs

  • Background Export Map and Export Layout no longer reach the session log. Session::run logs commands whose parameters name a path, and both exports have path. Export Features already has this gap, so this PR extends it. Inline comment posted at crates/engine/src/cmd/exports.rs:167. Confidence ~60%.

Security

  • Nothing found in the changed code.

Performance

  • layout.export clones the whole project on the UI thread, then detached() clones every map a second time. Features is Arc-backed, so the cost is modest. Low confidence, not posted.

Quality

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/exports.rs:5 is still over 140 characters, though the earlier thread replied that the paragraph was reflowed. Left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Nothing new. No new unwrap/expect in non-test code, and the new progress functions are cfg-free so wasm still builds. Exports now land through drawn and export_land, so every notice keeps its severity and every failure is reported. The Exported {path} line uses format!, but that line was moved, not written here.

Checked and left alone

  • I checked the shared opening slot and the detach_read / same_opening logic against the earlier threads. Both hold up.
  • Earlier concerns still applied to this head and not re-raised: the export-job diagnostics source, the duplicate-severity pairing, the tile-priority question, the worldview snapshot, the export-overlap race, and the lost source errors. I left 9 earlier concerns alone because they were already raised and answered or resolved.

The app's exports on a thread of their own bypass `Session::run`, so they were missing from the
session's log (Export Features since opengeos#1433). `ExportRun::started` keeps the command, its

with the parameters kept as the log keeps them, failed or not.

Code review

I read the full diff against the staged AGENTS.md, checked the surrounding source for the points below, and compared against the 13 earlier review threads. The PR is well built: the background path draws on a detached copy, cancel is honoured before any write, notices keep their severity, and the source-error and log handling pass their tests. I found no crash path, no security issue, and no silent loss that the change introduces.

Bugs

  • Low (~30%): a streamed layer's copy error is only marked on the live layer when same_opening holds. Otherwise the file is written without that layer and nothing is said. The live map already drew without the layer before this PR, so this is mostly pre-existing, but the "Never silent" rule applies. Inline comment posted on exports.rs:116.

Security

  • None found. Path handling and parameter checks are unchanged in substance.

Performance

  • None significant. Map::detached() and the project clone run on the UI thread, but Features and opening are Arc-backed, so the clones are cheap. Session::new on the export thread is safe to repeat: register_external is idempotent, and Once guards the tile fetcher.

Quality (grouped nits, left for the release quality pass)

  • tests.rs:28074 adds unpathed_json, which duplicates the existing unpathed closure at tests.rs:28095 with the same body. Keep one.
  • exports.rs:5 is still an overlong line, although the earlier reply says it was reflowed. Inline comment posted.

AGENTS.md

  • The change makes Export Map and Export Layout show progress and Cancel in the status bar, which is a visible change. The PR body has no screenshots (~60%). AGENTS.md asks for after-only screenshots for new UI, or before and after for changed UI.

Earlier threads: 13 threads in prior-reviews.json. I left 12 alone because they were fixed or declined with a reason: the worldview thread was declined twice, the tile-priority thread was withdrawn, and the render test-coverage thread was declined. I re-raised one point, the exports.rs:5 reflow, because the diff shows the claimed fix did not fully land.

- `export_land` says a failure itself, once and under the export's command, as `Session::run`

- A source that failed on the export's copy, where its live layer is gone or was opened afresh,

Code review

I read the whole diff, the 16 prior review threads, and the call sites the diff depends on. Most earlier concerns are resolved in the code. I found no crash paths, no unwrap in non-test code, and no wasm breakage in the new code.

Bugs: none confirmed.

Security: none found.

Performance

  • Every map is cloned twice when a layout export starts: once by s.project.clone() and again by m.detached() (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:3492). This runs on the UI thread, because export_start runs before the export thread spawns. Export Map has the same UI-thread clone (share.rs:199). Confidence ~85%. Inline comment posted.

Quality

  • Each missing layer gets its own warning (crates/engine/src/cmd/exports.rs:120). AGENTS.md asks for one notice per kind with a count. Confidence ~50%. Inline comment posted.

AGENTS.md

  • The rule above is the only point against AGENTS.md. The rest of the new code follows it: notices go through Session::notify/warn, and the new tests cover both lossy and clean input.

Low-confidence notes

  • The export's log entry is written at landing, so it sits after any commands run while the export drew. A replayed script would then write the file from a later state. Confidence ~40%. Inline comment posted (exports.rs:200).

Checked and left alone

  • I did not re-raise any of the 16 earlier threads. Two of them (the worldview snapshot and the tile-priority scheduling) are declined by the author and unchanged in the code.
  • I checked and ruled out:
    • tile diagnostics on the export thread (exportjob.rs already enters the session's capture),
    • the register_external global side effects of building a copy session (it is idempotent),
    • the Notice field and Severity derives (no other struct literals).

…one copy of the project

- The layers whose source failed on the copy and that can't be marked on their live layer are
said in one notice with a count, naming the first. The opening is checked first, so a layer
reopened and failing again meanwhile is still said.
- Export Layout drops the copied maps' reads under way in place (`Map::detach_reads`), so the
  project is copied once.

Code review

I read the diff in full, the earlier review threads, and the surrounding code in exports.rs, layout.rs, share.rs, exportjob.rs, source.rs, progress.rs and render/lib.rs. I found no crash paths, no unsafe code, and no unwraps in non-test code. The new background path matches the design the threads describe. The findings are below.

Bugs

  • Notice cap drops early notices from the export copy's history (~35%). copy.notices is trimmed to 200 and the copy's history is discarded, so a drawing that says more than 200 things loses its earliest notices from the troubleshooting history with no count. Inline comment on layout.rs:3506.
  • Copy session starts without this session's logins and connections (~30%). A streamed layer that reopens on the copy may fail where the screen succeeds. drawn reports it as missing, so it is not silent. I did not confirm that such a layer reopens rather than reusing its live handle. Inline comment on layout.rs:3497.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • Every layout.export call, including scripts through write_here, now clones the project and builds a full Session, which includes cmd::all() (~25%). Before, scripts drew in place. The cost is probably small. I did not raise it inline.

Quality

  • The new unpathed_json closure in tests.rs duplicates the existing unpathed closure. This is left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. There are no new unwraps, no std::time on the web path, no new literal UI strings, and the wasm gating looks right.

Already raised, left alone (5 threads): the render cancel-wait test coverage (declined), the worldview snapshot (declined, raised twice), the log ordering (declined), and the export tile priority (withdrawn). The other threads were fixed and resolved, and I did not re-raise them.

…s, and give the copy its own thinning

- Past the 200 notices a session keeps, the copy's earlier notices are said as one count.
- `detach_read` gives the copy its own thinning decisions, so the map's redraws never wait on

Code review

No high-confidence bugs, crash paths, silent data loss, or security issues in the changed code. I read the diff against the base-branch AGENTS.md, the prior threads, and the surrounding code for the export paths, cancellation, notice landing, the source-copy logic (same_opening, detach_read), and the wasm gating. I did not compile or run the tests here. No inline comments were posted because nothing cleared the bar for one; the items below are the only leftovers.

Bugs

  • None found at high confidence. I checked that cancel from the status bar still reaches export_land and is logged as failed. exportjob::stop only runs on app exit, so the cancel-path log concern does not apply.

Security

  • None found. The new background paths take the same path parameter that the commands already used.

Performance

  • No new concerns. The UI-thread project and map clones at export start were already discussed in the prior threads, and the author answered them.

Quality (nits, confidence about 60–70%, for the release quality pass)

  • crates/engine/src/tests.rs around line 28043: the new unpathed_json closure duplicates the unpathed helper defined further down in the same test. One helper defined before its first use would do.
  • crates/engine/src/cmd/exports.rs around line 223: export_start destructures command as &'static str, which shadows the command: &str parameter. A different name would read more clearly.
  • crates/engine/src/cmd/exports.rs around line 170 (confidence about 30%): when the write itself failed, the landing still says "<path>: <layer> isn't in the file". No file exists in that case, so the wording is slightly misleading. The error is still reported.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, or panic. Missing layers are reported as one notice with a count. Both the lossy and clean cases are tested, including the cancelled runs. The new code has no wasm-only build risk: drawn, map_work, and export_work are not cfg-gated, and Started and the background-only functions are gated. Engine notices stay English, as the existing engine notices do.

Prior review threads

  • The thread list has 23 threads. I left all 23 alone: 17 were fixed or confirmed by the author, and 6 were declined, withdrawn, or accepted by the reviewer. I found no new evidence against any of the author's answers.
