Summary

A native HEAD refusal arriving after logout could retain an API key echoed in a diagnostic header, because revocation had already removed its redaction patterns. Native HEAD now records refusals by HTTP status alone whenever any hop carried a web-service login, using the existing status-only failure representation. HEAD tracks login use across the entire redirect chain; GET's existing per-hop redirect policy is unchanged. The request-lifetime flag stays set across redirects and revocation; anonymous HEAD requests retain their selected diagnostic headers.

Adds deterministic local HTTP regressions that delay a 403 until after real logout, credential replacement, or owning-session destruction. They check History records and copied reports for raw and encoded credentials, preserve the HTTP status, and cover active Basic/API-key logins, an anonymous control, and a cross-origin redirect without credential adoption. The lifecycle scenario runs in an isolated test subprocess so parallel engine tests cannot exhaust its native HEAD admission capacity, and it checks credential values on the wire case-sensitively. Updates the existing web-service login documentation. This is Split A only: the delayed native HEAD diagnostic leak, covering the relevant portion of #757 item 8 and its documentation. It does not implement the other architectural audit items, remembered logins, or the remaining #757 requirements.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci passed (formatting, workspace Clippy with warnings denied, workspace tests, and layers).
  • cargo test -p rustgis-engine delayed_head_refusal_keeps_secrets_out_of_history_across_login_lifecycle -- --nocapture passed: ten real delayed-response local-server cases.
  • cargo test -p rustgis-tiles delayed_head_refusal_after_cross_origin_redirect_is_status_only -- --nocapture passed.
  • cargo test -p rustgis-tiles logins -- --nocapture passed: 15 existing login regressions, including GET diagnostics and HEAD/POST handling.
  • cargo test -p rustgis-tiles --lib passed: all 279 tests, including the delayed redirect regression alongside tests registering short credential redaction patterns.
  • CC_wasm32_unknown_unknown=/opt/homebrew/opt/llvm/bin/clang AR_wasm32_unknown_unknown=/opt/homebrew/opt/llvm/bin/llvm-ar cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passed. The initial build with default tools failed at Zstandard linking; selecting LLVM resolved it.
  • Independent review found no actionable issues and reran both new regressions and git diff --check successfully.

New runtime coverage is native/local HTTP. Browser runtime behavior and a redirect chain returning to the original origin were not exercised by these new tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Failed HEAD requests using web-service login credentials no longer expose credentials in request history or diagnostic response headers. History retains the plain URL and response status, including when requests are redirected or login state changes.
    • Anonymous failed HEAD requests continue to retain selected diagnostic headers.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the HTTPS certificate guide to describe the information recorded for failed HEAD requests.

Walkthrough

The native HEAD refusal path now omits response headers when a login was carried on any request hop. Anonymous refusals retain selected diagnostic headers. Tests cover login lifecycle and cross-origin redirects, and the documentation describes both outcomes.

Changes: HEAD refusal diagnostics

Explanation

The changed test, native HEAD handling, and documentation support #757 item 8 and the web-service login documentation requirement. The tests verify secret omission from History and copied diagnostics while preserving HTTP status. The changes do not add unrelated feature work.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #757 defines a broad coding scope. The PR implements only the delayed native HEAD refusal part of item 8. It adds status-only diagnostics for authenticated HEAD failures, lifecycle regression tests, and related documentation. The PR does not implement Earthdata token remembering and expiry handling (A1-A2), connection login methods and secret storage (B3-B4), origin-limited credential use and HTTP confirmation (B5), connection-aware project handling (B6), token migration from layer addresses (C7), or web-app login behavior (item 9).

Resolution

Implement the remaining #757 coding requirements and add corresponding tests, or narrow the linked issue scope to the implemented HEAD diagnostic slice and reassess against that narrowed scope.

The PR description and the new comment say this matches authenticated GET's status-only policy, but the rule differs. HEAD keeps a sticky carried_login across every hop, so a later cross-origin anonymous 403 is status-only. GET decides per hop at fetch_answer (cache.rs:1705, login.is_none() on the final hop), so after a logged-in hop redirects cross-origin, GET still keeps the headers of the anonymous refusal.

The practical risk is low, since the credential never reached the other origin. Two options: (a) make GET sticky too, as a follow-up; or (b) correct the wording here and in docs/user-guide/data.md so it doesn't claim parity. Confidence: high that the policies differ, medium on how much it matters.

Code review

I found no bugs or security problems in the changed code. The main issue is one inconsistency in how the PR describes its own policy.

Bugs

  • None found. The status-only path in head_with builds the failure with no answer, so RequestDiagnostics::failed records no headers and the test's history checks hold.

Security

  • None found. I checked the sticky carried_login flag across redirects and revocation, the scrubbing of error messages, and that the cross-origin hop never receives the login. The engine test's global state is clean: no fetcher or header override is set in the engine crate.

Performance

  • None found.

Quality

  • Policy described as matching GET but it doesn't (medium confidence, posted inline at crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:1414). HEAD's check is sticky across hops, while GET's check at cache.rs:1705 looks only at the final hop (login.is_none()). After a logged-in hop redirects cross-origin to an anonymous 403, GET still keeps the headers and HEAD doesn't. The practical risk is low because the credential never reached that origin. Either make GET sticky as a follow-up or correct the wording in the PR body, the new comment, and docs/user-guide/data.md.
  • Minor nits (not posted): in delayed_head_refusal_after_cross_origin_redirect_is_status_only, deactivate(&foreign) runs after the assertions, so a failure leaves the foreign login active. The withheld headers are not announced to the user, but the docs state the behaviour and GET already does the same, so this is consistent with existing policy.

AGENTS.md

  • Test-only unwrap/assert use is allowed. No new non-test panics, unsafe, or new dependencies. Error text uses format! in the same style as the existing POST path. No visible UI change, so no screenshot is needed.
  • Browser HEAD (apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs:974) is a separate implementation that this PR does not touch. The docs say "On the desktop", so this is consistent. I did not read the browser HEAD body, so I can't say whether it has the same header retention.

Earlier concerns

  • No prior review threads existed, so none were left alone.

Keep the detailed GET refusal status-only after a login hop.

After a login hop, a detailed GET keeps the refusal headers when a later cross-origin hop refuses it. If that server echoes the credential in x-request-id, logout does not scrub it, and generic redaction keeps it. Use the same carried_login check that the HEAD path uses.

Code review

I found no new bugs, security issues, or performance problems in the changed code. No inline comments were posted, since nothing new met the bar for one.

Bugs

  • None found. I traced head_with in crates/tiles/src/cache.rs: carried_login is set on every hop, is sticky across cross-origin redirects, and gates the status-only return on any status ≥ 400. The success path and the anonymous path are unchanged. Confidence: high.

Security

  • None found. The status-only path removes echoed response headers from History and copied reports, and the new tests check raw, Basic, and percent-encoded forms of the credential on the wire and in the output. Confidence: high.

Performance

  • None found.

Quality

  • The status-only failure line Failure::without_answer("", format!("http status: {status}"), Reason::Status(status)) now appears at three sites (cache.rs 1416, 1472, 1708). A shared helper would be cleaner. Nit, left for the release quality pass. Confidence: high.

AGENTS.md

  • "Never silent": HEAD refusals after a login now drop response headers with no runtime notice. This looks like a deliberate redaction, it is documented in docs/user-guide/data.md, and History keeps the status, so I don't count it as a violation. Confidence: low.
  • Test rules are met. The unwrap() calls are in test code only, there is no unsafe, the new code is gated on not(target_arch = "wasm32"), and the child-process isolation follows the existing HEAD-admission limit. The helper names, signatures, and module paths all exist (logins::basic, activate, bind, serve_recorded, tests::service_logins). Confidence: high.

Earlier concerns

  • I left one earlier concern alone. The unresolved thread at crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:1414 says GET applies its status-only policy per hop, while HEAD is sticky. The code still behaves that way, and the PR body now states that GET is unchanged, so the description half is addressed. The code half is still open for a follow-up.
  • Two other threads (the native HEAD admission limit and the case-sensitive Basic header comparison) are marked addressed in 5173ba0, and the code confirms it.
  • Total earlier concerns left alone: 1.
