feat(ui): a Zarr layer following the time slider reads its step off the frame - #1469
Part of #1291 step 3 (tracked in #1252): the Zarr "follow time slider" layers leave the UI thread.
What changes
In the desktop app, moving the time slider no longer waits for a Zarr step that hasn't been read yet.
Off the frame
With Session::zarr_off_frame on (the UI sets it in RustGisApp::new on desktop), cmd::zarr::follow_time reads a step that isn't in the slice cache on a thread of its own (read_off_frame).
At most two such reads run at once. They share the reading_ahead set with read-ahead, so a step is never read twice.
The layer keeps showing the step before until the new one lands.
When a read lands, the app is woken (rustgis_map::source::wake). The frame loop calls Session::follow_time_landed, which costs one atomic load when nothing landed, and the layer shows the step.
A web store's next two steps are still read ahead.
Playing waits for each step to be read before it steps again (Session::zarr_waiting), so every step shows, as before, while the window stays responsive.
Failures
A step that can't be read empties the layer and says why once it lands, once for all the layers on that step.
The last 16 failures are kept, and a later successful read clears its entry.
Read-ahead now also wakes the app when it ends early or panics, so a step it gave back unread is read off the frame.
Unchanged:
Scripts and the command line still wait for each step (the flag is off).
An animation's frames (time.export) read each step before they draw (follow_time_now).
…he frame (opengeos#1291 step 3)
In the desktop app, moving the time slider no longer waits for a Zarr step that hasn't been
read: the step is read on a thread of its own (at most two at once), the layer showing the step
before until it lands, and the app then draws it (`Session::follow_time_landed`, asked each
frame). Playing waits for each step to be read before it moves on, so every step shows, as when
the read waits. A step that can't be read empties the layer and says why once it lands; a step
read before (the last eight, and a web store's two read ahead) shows at once.
Scripts and the command line still wait for each step (`Session::zarr_off_frame` is off), and
an animation's frames (`time.export`) read each step before they draw.
Zarr time-following reads can run in background threads on desktop. The app tracks pending and completed reads, pauses playback while a step is pending, and follows landed steps. Animation export, scripts, and plugin-invoked commands use synchronous step handling.

Summary
Zarr read and follow behavior crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/zarr.rs, crates/map/src/source.rs
Session state tracks off-frame reading and landed steps. Zarr follow logic limits background reads to two workers, keeps the displayed slice while a read is pending, and reports stored read failures. Completed reads wake the map source.
The app enables off-frame reads on non-WASM targets and checks for landed steps. Playback resets its timer and schedules a repaint while a Zarr read is pending.
Synchronous workflows and validation crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/plugins.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/time.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/data.md
Animation frames call follow_time_now. Script and plugin command execution uses step tracking. Tests cover background reads, failures, cache locking, and frame loading. The guide describes desktop loading and synchronous behavior in scripts, command-line use, and Export.

Background reads can exceed the intended limit, and a failed read may be reported twice. The remaining test gaps leave pending reads and exported frame contents unverified; these are bounded merge risks.

A rabbit watched the time slices glide, While quiet workers read beside. The slider waits; the frames align, A landed step redraws the line. The hare thumps once: “The maps look fine!”
Scope: the 8 files in the PR, the diff, the surrounding Zarr follow/read-ahead code, timebar.rs playback, the source.rs waker, and the wasm cfg gates. prior-reviews.json has no threads, so nothing was left out as already raised.
Bugs
Abandoned step failures are reported late and not retried. A failed off-frame read is only said when a layer currently wants that step. If the slider has moved on, the entry stays and is reported on the next visit without a re-read. The comment at zarr.rs:613 claims a re-read that only happens after cap eviction. Confidence: medium. (Inline comment posted.)
Playback can hold on a read that never returns.zarr_waiting keeps playback paused until the step lands, and the PR has no cancel. I could not confirm a request timeout for web stores from the Zarr module. Confidence: low.
Security
None found in the changed lines.
Performance
slice_key is computed twice per layer per follow (zarr.rs:668-669), each with filesystem stat calls for folder stores. Only a nit. Confidence: high.
Quality
source.rs:1141 adds pub fn wake(), whose body duplicates the existing pub(crate) fn landed() at source.rs:529. Make landed public and reuse it. Confidence: high.
The playback hold is untested. a_zarr_step_is_read_off_the_frame_in_the_app only asserts !zarr_waiting() after the step lands (tests.rs:16975). Also not covered: the thread-cap path, the spawn-failure fallback, and two layers on one step. Confidence: high.
reading_ahead lock poisoning makes read_off_frame return Ok silently, which would leave playback held forever. Very unlikely in practice. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
One error notice per layer, not one per kind with a count (zarr.rs:726). The blocking path has the same shape. The PR text says "once for all the layers on that step", which the code does not do. Confidence: high. (Inline comment posted.)
Wasm: the new cfg gates look correct. frames has a wasm stub, landed_since returns false on wasm, and the source.rs addition is wasm-safe. I did not build for wasm.
Inline comments are on crates/engine/src/cmd/zarr.rs lines 613 and 726. The quality items above are grouped here rather than posted inline, per the nit guidance.

Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base c072c7a to PR head f1ad89d).
Add deterministic pending-state coverage as a follow-up refactor.
The test does not observe the state between time.goTo and the step landing. It therefore does not detect a blocking move or a missing pending state. The current fixture uses ordinary local files, and the read path has no test-controlled delay, so this requires a read-control seam before adding the assertion. Once that seam exists, hold step 2 pending and assert that the previous value remains visible and s.zarr_waiting() is true before releasing the read.

The time-navigation test only checks state after step 2 lands, so it misses
blocking moves and absent pending state. Add a test-controlled read delay for

Exercise an uncached frame and verify its rendered content.
The export assertion checks only the frame count. Step 2 was loaded earlier and can remain in the slice cache, so this test does not protect the blocking export path. A wrong step can also pass because the frame count remains one.
Add a valid fixture step that the test does not visit before export. Export that step, decode the generated PNG from the ZIP, and assert pixels that identify its data. Run the focused engine test to validate the regression check.

…res said once per cause
- Agents, models' and tasks' steps, notebooks and nested commands wait for the step, as their
next command may read the layer; `time.export` restores the slider's step the same way.
- A kept step is looked up once; a miss goes off the frame, never read on the UI thread.
- A failure kept for a step no layer waits for any more is dropped, so coming back reads it
again; a read-ahead that failed isn't read ahead again until the step is read.
- Layers emptied by one cause are said in one notice with a count.
- A landed step redraws the layout page too, and shows for a whole step while playing.
- The Zarr tests that read steps take one lock on the shared slice cache.
Script pane scripts don't wait for uncached Zarr steps (confidence: high). script.run runs each line's command function directly, so depth stays at 1 and the new wait gate reads false. A time.goTo followed by an export then reads the stale raster. This is the open thread on crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:1134, re-raised because the wait condition in follow_time changed and the problem remains. Inline comment posted at crates/engine/src/cmd/zarr.rs:658, with a suggested fix (a script_running flag, as notebooks use) and the missing test.
Failed reads of abandoned steps are dropped unsaid (confidence: medium). Left alone: the earlier thread on this is resolved, and the design is that the failure is said when the slider returns to the step.
Security
None found in the changed lines.
Performance
follow now runs on every background landing, and slice_key does up to three metadata calls per folder-store layer on the UI thread (confidence: low). Bounded in practice, so I'm not raising it inline.
Quality
The notice reads "and 1 more layers" for a single extra layer (confidence: high). Pluralisation nit, left for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. There are no new unwrap, expect or unsafe calls in non-test code, the wasm branches are gated, and engine notices are English because the engine doesn't use tl!.
The docs (docs/user-guide/data.md) say scripts wait for each step. That is inaccurate for the Script pane until the bug above is fixed.
Already raised (left alone, 9 threads): the layout redraw, the playback advance, the read-ahead failure loop, the shared-cache lock, the kept-step lookup, the notice grouping, the export restore, the failed-read retention, and the mutex/poison points. The fixes in 2e2f9c7 address them.

Use one shared limit for background Zarr reads.
A native non-waiting follow can start two read_off_frame workers and then start two read_ahead workers. The separate counters allow four Zarr reads to overlap, despite the stated two-read limit. Share one counter and one maximum between both paths.

`script.run` and a plugin's host calls run their commands directly, at the depth of the command
running them, so a Script pane line moving the slider read its Zarr step off the frame and the
next line read the step before. `Session::steps_running` counts commands run as another's steps
(set by `workflows::steps_of`, on every path), and `follow_time` waits under it. The grouped
failure notice says "1 more layer".
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (low, ~70% confidence): every background landing invalidates the map and the layout page, even when no shown step changed.
follow_time_landed returns true whenever landed_since sees any landing. Read-ahead calls landed() for every step it reads, including steps no layer is showing. The app then calls self.map.invalidate() and self.layout.redraw() (ui-egui lib.rs), so a web store playing forward forces roughly three full map redraws per step.
Suggested direction: have follow report whether it changed any layer's shown or data, and return that from follow_time_landed. The UI then redraws only when a step it draws has arrived. This is not a one-line change, so I have not written a suggestion block.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Test coverage (medium, ~60% confidence): the test does not prove the move returns before the read finishes.
The comment says "the move returns at once", but the only assertions are after landed(...), which loops until the step arrives. A blocking implementation would also pass: the time.goTo would read synchronously, and landed would return on its first check. The "a step read before shows at once" case is the same.
A deterministic check needs a read that can be held open, for example a store whose chunk read waits on a gate the test releases. Without that, asserting the old value right after the move would race the thread on a local store. The time.export block also asserts only frames == 1, not that the frame drew step 2.
I found no crash, safety, or silent-data-loss bugs in the changed code. Two inline comments are posted, one on performance and one on test coverage. The rest are low-confidence notes.
Bugs
Low, ~35%: a raster export the user runs while the slider's step is still being read writes the step on screen, the previous one, with no notice. Scripts and agents wait for the step, but a top-level share.exportRaster does not. Decide whether this should wait or say so.
Security
None found. The change adds no new input parsing or commands.
Performance
Low, ~70% (inline comment posted at crates/engine/src/lib.rs:1152): every background landing invalidates the map and layout page, even when no shown step changed. Read-ahead landings cause this too.
Quality
Nits, left for the release quality pass: the off-frame branch in follow repeats the error handling of the blocking branch. Two failure caches (failed_reads, failed_ahead) are similar.
Low, ~30%: if a background thread cannot be spawned, read_off_frame reads synchronously on the UI thread. That is rare, but it is the stall this PR is meant to remove.
Test coverage
Medium, ~60% (inline comment posted at crates/engine/src/tests.rs:16973): a_zarr_step_is_read_off_the_frame_in_the_app does not check that the move returns before the read finishes. A blocking implementation would pass. The time.export block asserts only the frame count.
AGENTS.md
Checked: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, no unsafe, wasm gating looks consistent, and zarr_cache_lock is used. I could not compile or run anything in this environment.
Prior reviews
I left 11 earlier threads alone. The fixes in aab6a2e and 2e2f9c7 are confirmed in the code.
One concern stays open in substance: a failed read for a step the slider has already left is dropped without a notice. The author's reply covers the retry, not the silence. The PR text still says the step "says why once it lands". I did not repost it.
Change size
Compared with the base branch (merge base c072c7a to PR head aab6a2e), not the latest push.

Keep failures until every waiting layer processes them.
If a worker fails between two layers in the same follow pass, the first layer remains waiting and the second records the failure. This cleanup removes the failure because it was reported for the second layer. The first layer then retries and produces another notice. The grouped-error assertion can also fail intermittently. Process a consistent failure snapshot for all layers before removing it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Part of #1291 step 3 (tracked in #1252): the Zarr "follow time slider" layers leave the UI thread.
What changes
In the desktop app, moving the time slider no longer waits for a Zarr step that hasn't been read yet.
Off the frame
Session::zarr_off_frameon (the UI sets it inRustGisApp::newon desktop),cmd::zarr::follow_timereads a step that isn't in the slice cache on a thread of its own (read_off_frame).reading_aheadset with read-ahead, so a step is never read twice.rustgis_map::source::wake). The frame loop callsSession::follow_time_landed, which costs one atomic load when nothing landed, and the layer shows the step.Playing waits for each step to be read before it steps again (
Session::zarr_waiting), so every step shows, as before, while the window stays responsive.Failures
Unchanged:
time.export) read each step before they draw (follow_time_now).Tests
a_zarr_step_is_read_off_the_frame_in_the_appcovers:time.exportstill draws its frame's step.The existing
a_zarr_variable_follows_the_time_slidercovers the blocking path, unchanged. Not covered
No Cancel or progress row: each read is one slice, bounded by the store's chunks, and the slider stays usable meanwhile.
ci_fast passed: fmt, clippy, the tests (apart from failures that also fail on
mainon that machine), the layers check and the wasm32 build.Summary by CodeRabbit
