feat(ui): Add Data and Load All read their file off the frame (#1291 step 3) - #1479
Part of #1291 step 3 (item 1 of the UI-thread track in #1252).
On the desktop, Add Data's whole-file reads and Load All Features now run on a thread of their own, so a large file no longer holds the window.
Which reads:
a native raster;
a raster GDAL converts;
a GeoJSON read whole (up to 32 MB);
delimited text;
a spreadsheet;
Load All Features from the layer's menu in Layers.
Status bar: shows the read under way, its progress, how many files wait, and Cancel.
How it works
Engine (cmd/reads.rs):
read_ahead picks the read a command would make and takes what it needs of the session; for Load All that's a detached copy of the layer.
ReadAhead::run reads under the run control, so Cancel and progress work.
The app then runs the normal command with the read placed in the session (Read::placed). The command's read sites (add_data's whole reads, raster::add_path, add_gdal_path, load_all) take it by key instead of reading again.
So what the command adds, says, logs and puts in Undo is unchanged.
A read failure is given to the command, which says it as before.
App (ui-egui/src/readjob.rs):
Reads go one at a time, in the order asked: files dropped together, and layers ticked in Choose Layers, are added in that order.
Each request remembers the project, the map and, for Load All, the layer it was asked for. If another project or map is open by the time it lands, or the layer is gone, it is left. One notice per reason says so, with a count.
Cancel leaves the read under way and those waiting, and says so.
Closing the app cancels a read and waits for it.
Only the desktop binary turns this on (RustGisApp::reads_off_frame). Scripts, the command line and the tests read where the command runs.
Not changed
Web app: works as before. Files come from the browser as bytes through layer.addDataBytes, and there are no threads there, so a large parse still blocks the tab. Moving that needs a Web Worker or a parse split across frames, and is left for a follow-up.
Formats still read when added: files read in place, web services, databases, KML/GPX/zip and DXF add as before. So do GeoJSON with "stream" given and Load All from the ribbon or command search.
Delimited Text… dialog: reads as the command runs, so a column that doesn't hold coordinates keeps the dialog open with its choices for another try. Its scripted form (ui.addDelimited with options) also reads as the command runs.
ui.addFile with reads off the frame: answers started or waiting instead of the added layer.
Tests
reads_made_ahead_are_taken_by_the_command:
GeoJSON, CSV, XLSX and GeoTIFF are read ahead and the file is then deleted, so what the command adds can only come from the read; the read must also be taken;
Load All on a streamed layer;
a cancelled read.
readjob tests:
the queue order matches adding the files one by one;
Undo;
Cancel with one waiting;
another project opened;
another map open when a Load All lands;
Load All asked twice;
closing the app.
Local run: fmt, clippy, the workspace tests (only failures already known on this machine), the layers checks and the wasm32 build of rustgis-web.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Desktop Add Data reads supported rasters, smaller GeoJSON files, delimited text, and spreadsheets in the background. Multiple files are added sequentially, and files requiring layer selection join the sequence after selection.
Load All Features runs in the background while the layer remains streamed until loading finishes.
The status bar shows the active read, queued files, available progress, and a Cancel option.
If the project or map changes during a read, affected requests are left unapplied with a notice. Canceling discards active and queued reads.
If a delimited-text file cannot be read with the selected columns or coordinate system, its dialog remains open.
…os#1291 step 3)
On the desktop, Add Data's whole-file reads (a raster, one GDAL converts, a GeoJSON, delimited
text or a spreadsheet) and Load All Features read on a thread of their own, with progress and
Cancel in the status bar. The command then runs as before and takes what was read instead of
reading again, so what it adds, says, logs and puts in Undo is unchanged. Files dropped together
read one at a time and land in order; Cancel or another project opened leaves them, and says so.

A rabbit watches files take flight, Then waits as reads run out of sight. The queue moves on, one task at a time, A cancel button keeps the chime. New features hop into the map, While streamed layers pause their lap.
Load All drops skipped rows and reader messages (pre-existing, on a path this PR rewrites).load_all_ahead calls copy.load_all(), which discards the skipped count and the ReadReport messages. The share export uses load_all_counted and reports them. Confidence: high. Inline comment posted.
Read-ahead parsing runs outside the panic guard.reads::read_ahead (add_data_ahead / load_all_ahead) runs on the UI thread before any read starts. It is not inside Session::run's catch_unwind. Confidence: medium on the gap, low on an actual panic. Inline comment posted.
Security
None found. The new code adds no new path handling or external input beyond what the existing commands already accept.
Performance
None significant. Load All clones the layer on the UI thread (cheap for streamed layers, since the dataset is a sample). Landing and the status checks are trivial per frame.
Quality
Nits, left for the release quality pass:
readjob.rs:197 uses format! for a user-visible notice; AGENTS.md asks for i18n::fmt.
readjob.rs uses tl!(job.name) in status and tl_raw!(job.name) in notify. Make these consistent.
data.md and the PR body say "Cancel leaves the file being read and those waiting". The code drops them, so "leaves" reads as "keeps". Reword it.
Test gap: hostile_params_never_panic doesn't exercise reads::read_ahead with junk params.
AGENTS.md
Closing the app (readjob::stop) clears queued reads without a notice. Files the user queued are dropped silently. Low confidence; the user chose to close, but AGENTS.md's "never silent" rule is worded broadly.
The queue-order promise holds only for readjob entry points. Commands that call app.run("layer.addData") directly (assistant, plugins, scripts) add synchronously and can land ahead of queued reads. The module doc claims more than that. Low confidence.
Load All and Add Data use the existing take / placed seam without new commands or dialogs, so the "commands never open dialogs" rule holds.
I did not compile or run the tests. I had no shell, so the wasm build, cargo xtask ci, and the new tests are unverified. Their behaviour is judged from reading only.

Move the GeoJSON size check off the frame thread, or accept the stall.
add_data_ahead calls std::fs::metadata at layer.rs:1472 before the read worker starts. On a stalled network share, the frame blocks before the status bar shows the read. add_data already stats the same file on the frame at layer.rs:1290, so this adds one blocking call rather than creating the freeze.
Why no edit is proposed
read_ahead must decide eligibility synchronously, because it returns None to mean "read in place." Moving the size check into the worker would need a second dispatch path, so no localized safe edit is established.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs at line 1472:
Update add_data_ahead so the GeoJSON metadata check does not block the frame
thread; preserve read_ahead’s synchronous eligibility and “read in place”
behavior by establishing a safe worker dispatch path before moving the check. If
that path cannot be established, retain the current behavior rather than
changing eligibility semantics.
Load All test cannot detect the fallback re-read it describes.
The test asserts that read_ahead is cleared and that the layer is no longer streamed. Both also hold when the prepared dataset is not used. The test's comment states a no-reread property that these assertions do not check.
Deleting the source file does not reliably make that fallback fail. The fallback reuses the layer's open handle, so the result depends on how that handle is backed. Do not rely on file removal as the check.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/tests.rs around lines 28536 - 28538:
Update the Load All test around read.placed to verify that the subsequent
layer.loadAll call uses the prepared dataset without rereading the source; the
existing state and result assertions do not prove this. Add a deterministic
check that observes or prevents a fallback read, rather than relying on deleting
the source file or on the backing behavior of an open handle.
The cancellation check in reads_made_ahead_are_taken_by_the_command calls control.cancel() before ahead.run(&control). It covers only a read that never starts. The read-job test in crates/ui-egui/src/readjob.rs cancels after add_file returns and checks only the layer count and the notices. Neither check shows whether the reader stopped early. A reader that ignores cancellation during its read can pass both tests.
Add a test that starts a read, waits until its work begins, cancels it, and asserts that the read returns an error containing cancelled. The crate-internal reads::ahead constructor accepts a work closure. The closure can signal the start over a channel, then wait until the control reports cancellation. This test covers how ReadAhead::run handles a cancel that arrives after work starts.
Do not require that every reader stop promptly. Some readers cannot be interrupted mid-read. Assert only the checkpoints that the readers expose.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The read spinner, name, progress bar, waiting count and Cancel button are appended to an already populated, fixed-height horizontal status bar. At narrow desktop widths the new controls may overflow or be clipped.
Cancel or read progress can be inaccessible even though the read is running.
This can occur when: A read is active at the desktop window's minimum width, particularly alongside an export status or a long projection label.

- reads_off_frame was set inside the macOS-only block: Linux and Windows read on the frame.
- Load All says how many rows couldn't be read, and keeps the layer's name if it was renamed
while the read ran.
- A GeoJSON read whole ahead keeps that route even if the file grew past the in-place size.
- A read whose project, map or layer went is cancelled but keeps its place until its thread
ends, so reads still go one at a time.
- Picking the read runs under a panic guard; a panic there reads where the command runs.
- Docs: a file that asks which layers to add joins the order once chosen.
Delimited Text and spreadsheets still read on the frame on desktop (high confidence). The ribbon's Home › Add › Add Data › Delimited Text… (ui.addDelimited, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:2854) opens dialogs::open_csv. Its Add button calls app.run("layer.addData", p) directly (crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs:819), bypassing readjob::run. The same direct call is at lib.rs:2869 for the scripted-options path. So a CSV or spreadsheet added this way is read on the UI thread and can land ahead of files still waiting in the queue. The PR body and docs/user-guide/data.md say delimited text and spreadsheets are read in the background, which doesn't hold for this route. Routing it through the queue needs a decision: r.is_err() keeps the dialog's file for a retry, but a queued read fails later, at landing. This file is not in the diff, so I could not post it inline; it is reported here only.
Security
None found. The paths and parameters read are the same as before this PR.
Performance
Low confidence: load_all_ahead calls l.clone() on the live streamed layer on the UI thread, before the read starts (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, load_all_ahead). That clone may copy render caches. I did not measure it.
Quality
The wording "Cancel leaves the file being read and those waiting" (docs/user-guide/data.md, and the same phrase in the PR body) reads as if Cancel does nothing. The code drops both. Suggest "Cancel drops…". This is a wording point, so it can wait for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
Never silent (re-posted, inline on crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:2712). The earlier Load All silent-loss concern is partly fixed: the skipped-row count is now warned. Layer::load_all_counted still discards ReadReport.messages, which add_read notifies for the same reads (for example the Z/M note). The new comment says what is new.
Test both ways. The new unread warning in load_all has no test for lossy input or clean input.
Prior review threads. There were 8 threads. I re-posted 1 (the Load All silent loss, partly fixed). I left 7 alone: they are fixed in this push (macOS-only reads_off_frame, Load All name reset, cancelled-read overlap, in-place GeoJSON route, crash guard around read_ahead, the resolved thread), or unchanged and still open (the stale-repair frame block in readjob.rs, and the in-order claim in the chooser docs).
I did not build or run tests (no shell in this review), so compile and test status is unverified.

…ing its read
A field added or deleted while a Load All read ran would have been lost or brought back by the
prepared read; it is now used only while the layer lists the same fields. Tests cover the
skipped-rows warning both ways, read ahead and here.
I read the full diff, the prior review threads, and the surrounding code in layer.rs, raster.rs, reads.rs and readjob.rs. I did not run the build or tests; I only have read access here. I posted two new inline comments. The other concerns below are summarised here, not posted.
Bugs
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:2708: the field-list guard l.dataset.fields.is_empty() || lets a stale prepared Load All read through when the user deletes every field during the read. The deleted fields would come back. Confidence: medium-low. Posted inline with a suggested exact comparison, pending a check of whether streamed layers can have empty field lists.
Security
No findings. The new code takes only local paths and parameters, which are already handled by the existing readers.
Performance
add_data_ahead (layer.rs) and load_all_ahead run on the UI thread before the read starts. They do some file-system checks (metadata, zarr::is_store), and load_all_ahead clones the layer. These are small, but they are work on the frame that this PR is meant to move off it. Confidence: low.
Quality
crates/ui-egui/src/readjob.rs:111: Gone's Display uses tl!, and the result is passed into i18n::fmt in land. The tl_raw! doc says that form is for fmt values. Only right-to-left or otherwise transformed languages would show a difference. Confidence: low-medium. Posted inline.
readjob.rsstatus: the status bar label uses tl!(job.name) on a value from a &'static str. This is probably fine, but it is worth checking when the catalogs are next translated.
AGENTS.md
No new unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe code in non-test paths. The catch_unwind guards are in place, and the earlier crash-path concern is addressed.
Silent-loss and test coverage now match the rule, except for the ReadReport.messages point left alone below.
Quality items for the release quality pass: the long line in docs/user-guide/data.md (the paragraph that starts "On the desktop, a file Add Data reads whole") breaks the file's wrap style, and "Cancel leaves the file being read and those waiting" is ambiguous. Neither changes behaviour.
Earlier concerns left alone: 10 threads. Seven were fixed or answered in 090c6159 or a66869b4: the GeoJSON route, chooser order, the macOS-only flag, the rename, the cancelled-slot overlap, the Load All warning, and the panic guard. One was declined with a reason and accepted (the repaired-source read on the frame). One was declined with a reason and re-posted by github-actions, which I did not repeat (the ReadReport.messages on Load All). The field-list concern was fixed in a66869b4; my comment above is about an edge of that fix, not the original concern.
Change size

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Keep field-mismatch rereads off the UI thread.
If a field changes during Load All, this guard causes load_all_counted() to reread the source during UI landing. A large or remote source can freeze the window, and Cancel is no longer available. Reconcile the prepared dataset with the live fields, or schedule the replacement read on a worker. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the UI evidence section. The status bar for Add Data and Load All is
visible UI, so replace the 'No visible UI change.' line with before and after
screenshots of the status bar during a read, or at least an after-only
screenshot for the new status bar. Replace the placeholder comment in the

The prepared read is used while the layer lists the fields it listed when the read began (an
empty list too), and a prepared failure is said instead of reading again on the frame. The
reasons a read was left are filled into their notice in logical order (tl_raw).
Delimited Text… still reads on the frame. The ribbon's Delimited Text… item (ui.addDelimited) adds through dialogs::open_csv, which calls app.run("layer.addData") directly (dialogs.rs:819). The scripted form with options does the same (lib.rs:2869). The new docs and PR body say delimited text and spreadsheets are read in the background, so this path contradicts them. Posted inline on layerchooser.rs:76. Confidence: high.
Security
None found. The new reads use the same path handling and size limits as the code they replace.
Performance
No new concern beyond the Delimited Text path above. The Load All fallback that reads on the frame when the source or fields changed was already raised and declined on an earlier thread, so I left it alone.
Quality
The routing predicates in add_data_ahead (GeoJSON size and stream, .json with crs/layer, the photo and zarr checks) duplicate add_data's routing. The "only where add_data takes that read" invariant depends on the two staying in step. Consider sharing one predicate. Confidence: medium. This is a quality point, so it may wait for the release quality pass.
reads::Read shares its name with std::io::Read. Minor naming nit. Confidence: low.
data.md line 1041 is over 100 columns and does not match the wrapping around it. Nit.
AGENTS.md
The PR body has no screenshot. The status bar is a visible new UI, and AGENTS.md asks for an "after" screenshot on new UI (docs/contributing.md#documentation). Confidence: high.
hostile_params_never_panic does not run reads::read_ahead, which takes command parameters on the UI thread. The catch_unwind in readjob::start covers the crash risk, but AGENTS.md asks for junk parameters to run through the hostile tests. Confidence: low to medium.
Checked and left alone
14 earlier threads were already on this PR. I re-posted none. Several are resolved and fixed in fa41e1ba or 090c6159. The Load All messages thread is declined by the author, and I agree: materialize builds its messages from info.notes, and add_source_with already notifies each note when the layer is added (layer.rs:1984).
Verified by reading: the read-ahead routing matches add_data's branch order for rasters, GDAL rasters, GeoJSON, delimited text and sheets; Session::run notifies refused commands, so let _ = app.run in landing is not silent; cancelled reads keep their slot until the thread ends.
I could not compile or run the tests here. The findings come from reading the diff and the surrounding source.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 5f79ae2 to PR head fa41e1b).

Replace the UI evidence placeholder. The change adds a status bar read indicator
with Cancel and changes Load All Features behavior, so it is visible. Attach
screenshots: before and after for the existing Add Data and Load All Features
behavior, and after-only for the new status bar read indicator. Keep the 'No
visible UI change.' line only if the author confirms that no UI is visible,
which the status bar contradicts.

I read the full diff, the staged guidelines, the prior threads, and the code around the changed lines (add_data routing, load_all, run_under, Session::run). Routing in add_data matches the ahead path for every file type, so no read is wasted or intercepted. The engine landing path is sound: load_all clears l.source, so a prepared read can't overwrite a layer loaded or edited meanwhile. Cancel does reach readers that count their steps, because run_under hooks the control into the data progress probe.
Bugs
Load All asked again for a layer whose cancelled read is still running is dropped without a queue entry; the check ignores gone jobs. Medium confidence. Inline comment on readjob.rs:64.
Security
None found. No new parsing of untrusted input outside the existing readers, and no secrets or path handling changes beyond what add_data already does.
Performance
load_all_ahead clones the whole Layer on the UI thread, deep-copying the streamed window's features before the frame returns. Low confidence, since I didn't measure window size. Inline comment on layer.rs:2739.
Quality
A user-visible notice in land (readjob.rs:203) is built with format!, not i18n::fmt. Medium confidence. Inline comment with suggestion.
Nits, not posted inline: the long line in docs/user-guide/data.md (~150 chars, unwrapped while its neighbours wrap near 100); reads::take consumes a read and silently re-reads when the downcast type doesn't match. Nothing triggers that today, so it is latent.
AGENTS.md
Same format! finding as Quality (interface text must be translatable). Otherwise the non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe, and the warnings use Session::warn with counts.
Earlier concerns: 15 existing threads. 11 are fixed in the code I read, 1 was withdrawn, and 3 were declined by the author with reasons I agree with: Delimited Text still reads on the frame, the Load All stale read after Repair, and the reader notes on Load All. I didn't re-raise any of them.
Not verified: I had no shell, so I did not build or run the tests or the wasm target. The findings come from reading the code.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 5f79ae2 to PR head 729ad0c).
…, not dropped
A read whose map or project went is cancelled but runs on until its thread ends; it no longer
counts as reading its layer, so a Load All asked again then waits behind it. A reader's failure
notice is put together with i18n::fmt. Docs: Delimited Text… keeps the dialog for a read that
fails, not for every column picked wrongly.
layer.loadAll is gated by need_streamed, and load_all_ahead returns None for non-streamed layers.
connectiontree.rs calls app.run directly, so its Err bookkeeping is unaffected.
Wasm: reads.rs is compiled everywhere but uses only wasm-safe types, and the desktop-only functions are gated consistently.
Security
None found.
Performance
Low confidence (~25%). The landing step still runs the command's add on the frame: add_read → add_dataset → extent and zoom (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:4071, :1055). The PR body is accurate that reading is off-frame, but a very large file may still show a hitch on landing. I have not measured it.
Quality
Medium confidence.docs/user-guide/data.md:1042 says "Cancel leaves the file being read and those waiting". A reader can take "leaves" to mean "keeps running". The code discards them and says so. Suggested wording: "Cancel stops the file being read and drops those waiting". The same paragraph is also one very long line, unlike the rest of the section.
Low confidence.reads::take (crates/engine/src/cmd/reads.rs:358-364) consumes the placed read even when the downcast fails. Today every key has a single type, so this is not reachable. If a future key collides, the command would silently re-read on the frame instead of failing loudly. Checking the type before consuming would prevent that.
Nit.load_all looks up the layer twice (layer.rs:2701-2702). Harmless.
AGENTS.md
High confidence (~90%). AGENTS.md requires screenshots for any visible change: before and after for changed UI, after only for new UI. This PR adds a new status-bar item and changes what Add Data and Load All show, and the PR body has no screenshots. Please add an after screenshot of the status bar while a read runs, and link it from opengeos/rustgis-assets as AGENTS.md specifies.
Everything else I checked conforms: no unwrap in non-test code, i18n::fmt and tl_raw! used for the notices, one notice per kind with a count, and the load_all warning has a test both ways.
Earlier concerns left alone
I left alone all 19 earlier threads and re-posted none of them: 14 resolved, 4 declined by the author (the stale Load All repair read, the reader messages on Load All, the Delimited Text dialog reading on the frame, and the layer clone cost), and 1 withdrawn.

Part of #1291 step 3 (item 1 of the UI-thread track in #1252).
On the desktop, Add Data's whole-file reads and Load All Features now run on a thread of their own, so a large file no longer holds the window.
How it works
cmd/reads.rs):read_aheadpicks the read a command would make and takes what it needs of the session; for Load All that's a detached copy of the layer.ReadAhead::runreads under the run control, so Cancel and progress work.Read::placed). The command's read sites (add_data's whole reads,raster::add_path,add_gdal_path,load_all) take it by key instead of reading again.ui-egui/src/readjob.rs):RustGisApp::reads_off_frame). Scripts, the command line and the tests read where the command runs.Not changed
layer.addDataBytes, and there are no threads there, so a large parse still blocks the tab. Moving that needs a Web Worker or a parse split across frames, and is left for a follow-up."stream"given and Load All from the ribbon or command search.ui.addDelimitedwith options) also reads as the command runs.ui.addFilewith reads off the frame: answersstartedorwaitinginstead of the added layer.Tests
