test(tiles): answer the derived-style test's requests by path (fix macOS CI on main) - #1482
Fixes the macOS failure of `Test (macos-latest)` on main at f52b742 (run 42059573164): `cache::tests::derived_style_tilejson_sprite_and_feature_requests_carry_the_binding` panicked with `io: Connection refused (os error 61)` on the GetFeatureInfo request.
Cause. The test's server (`serve_recorded`) answered exactly five connections, in order, then stopped listening. The tiles cache is shared with tests running at the same time, and any of them may clear it. When that happens between the test storing the documents and `source::resolve`, resolving starts a background fetch of the style, which takes one of the five answers. The fifth request then finds nobody listening. It is a race, not a macOS behaviour; the macOS runner's timing hit it.
Fix. A test-only `serve_by_path` that answers every connection by its request path (style, TileJSON, `{}` for the rest), so extra background fetches don't shift or use up the answers. The assertions are unchanged: the first five requests still must carry the service key header and no `rustgis-login` marker (background fetches go through the same binding).
Evidence. Forcing the race locally (a `source::resolve` before the documents are stored, then a short wait) fails on main with the same `Connection refused` error, and passes with this change. `cargo test -p rustgis-tiles --lib` passes repeatedly; clippy clean. Labelled `ci:macos` so the failing job runs here.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Updated automated login test scenarios to handle responses that vary by requested path, including style data, tile metadata, and fallback responses.
Test checks now account for background requests and verify that the expected minimum number of requests has been received. These changes affect test coverage only; no end-user functionality has changed.
The test's server answered exactly five connections in order. A test
running at once may clear the shared cache; resolving the style then
fetches it again in the background, which took one of the five answers,
so the GetFeatureInfo request was refused (macOS CI on main).
The test server now reads complete requests and selects responses by request path. The derived-style login test checks the login header on all requests received so far, including background requests.

Summary
Serve test responses by request path crates/tiles/src/cache.rs
read_request reads through the declared Content-Length, with a five-second timeout. serve_recorded uses the helper and retains its fixed response sequence. The new serve_by_path records requests and selects responses by path. The derived-style login test returns style JSON for /style.json, TileJSON for /tiles.json, and {} for other paths. It checks the login header on all requests received so far and asserts that at least five were made.
opengeos/RustGIS#1145: Adds web-service login bindings and derived-request login inheritance, which the derived-style login test exercises.
opengeos/RustGIS#1223: Adds session-only login bindings to derived requests, which relate to the test's login-header assertion.

A rabbit checks each path with care, Style JSON and tiles appear. The fallback brings {} to light, Requests are gathered through the night. Each header joins the growing queue, Five or more must pass the view.
None found. I checked the new serve_by_path helper against the test's use of it:
asked.iter().take(5) cannot hang. The test makes at least five explicit GETs (style, TileJSON, tile, sprite, info) and each sends its request head before it gets an answer, so five messages exist before the iteration starts.
The post-deactivate assertions still hold. source::resolve, sprite::load, pmtiles::info and cog::info all call logins::check before any fetch, so the server answering /style.json forever cannot turn Failed into Ready.
logins::activate makes no HTTP request, so the server's first connection is the style request, as before.
Confidence: high.
Security
None. The change is test-only, under #[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))], and it binds to 127.0.0.1.
Performance
None.
Quality
The request reader in serve_by_path duplicates serve_recorded, but drops its Content-Length body handling. Inline comment posted on crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:2384. It is latent, since this test only sends GETs. Confidence: medium.
The accept loop in serve_by_path never exits, so the thread and listener live until the test binary exits. Harmless with one caller; noted in the inline comment. Confidence: high.
AGENTS.md
Test-only change; no unwrap issues in non-test code, no wasm impact, and the line widths fit rustfmt.toml (max 140). Nothing to flag.
Earlier concerns: none. prior-reviews.json has no threads, so I left nothing alone for being already raised.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base f52b742 to PR head bba34a9), the whole PR.
- Read the whole request, body too, in one read_request helper that both
test servers call, so a future serve_by_path POST isn't reset; note
that serve_by_path's thread lives until the test binary exits.
Test assertion may skip the test's own requests (crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:2712, anchored at 2653 because 2712 is outside the diff). asked.iter().take(5) checks the first five requests received. With serve_by_path, background style fetches can add connections, so the window can fill with background requests and leave out the test's own feature-info request, which is its fifth. The old fixture had exactly five answers, so take(5) covered every request. Suggested fix: asked.try_iter(), which does not block and sees every request sent so far. Each of the test's own native::get calls returns only after the server has sent the request on the channel, so all of them are included. Confidence: medium (~70%). Not verified by running the test.
Security
None found.
Performance
None found.
Quality
Low confidence (~20%): serve_by_path accepts connections serially, so a client that connects and sends nothing holds the accept loop for up to the 5-second read timeout. The fixed-count server had the same shape, and responses use Connection: close, so this is unlikely to matter in practice.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The new unwrap()/bind calls are in mod tests, as in the existing serve_recorded. No new dependencies, no user-visible strings, no wasm-facing code (the helpers are cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))).
Checked: the diff, the surrounding test body (lines 2636–2716), the other serve_recorded callers and their asked consumption patterns, and the prior review thread. I could not build or run the tests in this session, so the compile and test behaviour is verified by reading only.
Prior concerns left alone: 1. The thread on the duplicated body-reading loop and the never-ending accept loop was answered and addressed in 0733635, so I did not re-raise it.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base f52b742 to PR head 0733635).
Check every request the test server received, not only the first five.
The server answers any number of connections. A background style fetch that runs before the GetFeatureInfo request moves that request to position six, and take(5) never reads it. The test then passes even if that request lacks the X-Service-Key header.
try_iter() returns every request the server has already received. Each explicit request is received before its response returns, so all explicit requests are checked. A background request that has not arrived yet is not checked, and any background request that is checked carries the same header.
Suggested fix
- for request in asked.iter().take(5) {+ for request in asked.try_iter() {

- Check every recorded request, background fetches included, rather than
the first five, so the test's own GetFeatureInfo request is always
among those checked.
Scope: one file, crates/tiles/src/cache.rs, test code only (mod tests). The PR replaces the derived-style test's five fixed-order answers with a path-based server, serve_by_path, so background style fetches no longer consume answers or leave the listener closed. The read_request helper is shared by both servers.
Bugs: none found.
Request count: the test's own requests are style, TileJSON, tile, sprite.json and feature info, which is five. The requests.len() >= 5 lower bound holds, and try_iter() sees all of them because the server sends each request on the channel before writing its answer. (High confidence.)
Header assertion over all requests: background fetches reach logins::apply at cache.rs:1467 and cache.rs:1641, so they carry the service key as the assertion needs. (About 85% confidence. I did not run the test.)
Security: none. The listeners are test-only and bound to 127.0.0.1.
Performance: none that matters.read_request rescans the buffer on each read, which is negligible for test requests.
Quality (low confidence, about 20%, not posted inline):serve_by_path accepts connections serially. A client that connects and sends nothing holds the server for the 5 s read timeout and delays later answers. This only matters if a client pre-connects, which I did not see in this test.
AGENTS.md: compliant. The changes are test-only, so the unwrap() calls follow the existing serve_recorded pattern. No dependencies, assets or non-test code are touched.
Prior reviews: two threads exist on this PR. Both are resolved and addressed in the current head: the take(5) header check now uses try_iter over all requests, and the read_request extraction plus the listener-lifetime comment are in place. I left both alone, so 2 earlier concerns were not re-raised.
No inline comments posted, since no finding survived verification as a defect.
