Closes #1499

Tests that fail when the UI suite runs in parallel take turns. A COG whose header was just read is framed even if the cache was emptied since. Two coverage tests come from #1484's review.

Changes

  • ui-egui: tests take turns (fetching::turn). These tests now take the turn: those that download through the tile cache, those that log in to a connection (a login that ends empties the cache), and those that wait for what the cache read (tiles, an archive's header). The rule's comment says so. The download tests share a first_request helper, so a request that never comes fails the test after 10 s instead of hanging it.
  • engine: add_cog(…, probed). When layer.addUrl or embeddings.add has just read a COG's header natively, add_cog waits for it (info_blocking) instead of asking the cache once (info). If something emptied the cache in between (a login ended), the layer is still framed. A dated address passes probed only when its probe answered that it is a COG. GeoLibre project imports and the web build never wait.
  • ui-egui: the plugin tab's harness allows 8 steps: a widget shown for the first time takes one more pass.
  • engine: tests for a locked feature's neighbour and for a lock left empty. The doc of forget_label_state_of_removed_features now says it compares layer ids too.

Testing

  • cargo test --workspace --no-fail-fast: 4224 passed, 0 failed, 21 ignored.
  • record_tests:: + mapgpu:: and parity_vector_tile_meshes + connectiontree:: failed on every run before the change. They now pass 3/3, and the whole UI suite passes 5/5.
  • Not reproduced locally, fixed from reading the code: adding_a_layer_keeps_the_view and unloaded_plugins_offer_retry_and_remove.
  • cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings (engine, ui-egui) and cargo check -p rustgis-engine --target wasm32-unknown-unknown pass on 3c341af.

UI evidence

None: the app's behaviour is unchanged, apart from the framing of a COG whose header was just read when a login ended at the same moment.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved loading of cloud-optimized GeoTIFF layers, including dated URLs, on desktop. When layer metadata cannot be read, a warning is now shown with available error details.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for loading dated GeoTIFFs, handling unreadable cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs, and preserving label-lock state through feature deletion and undo/redo.
    • Improved reliability of tests for connections, downloads, logins, and map rendering by coordinating tests that share fetching and cache resources.

A test that replaces the process's one fetcher (parity_raster_tiles) answered other tests' downloads with a 404, so their local servers never got a request: one failed and two hung. The tests that download through the cache now take the turn the rule in lib.rs asks for, and their servers wait 10 s at most for a request (first_request), so a lost one fails instead of hanging.
…rns too

A login replaced or ended empties the tile cache, which dropped the tiles and archive headers other tests had just waited for: parity_vector_tile_meshes drew no tiles beside connectiontree, and the source layers test lost its archive's header. The tests that log in, and those that wait for what the cache read, take the same turn.
…ache was emptied since

add_cog asked for the header without waiting, so one dropped since the probe (the tile cache emptied by a login ending) left a first COG unframed, as adding_a_layer_keeps_the_view saw on CI. It now waits for it natively when the caller has just read it (layer.addUrl, a dated address, embeddings); a project's GeoLibre import still doesn't wait for each file.
A widget shown for the first time asks for one more pass to take its style, so the rows that change after Retry settle in six passes, past the harness's default four.
What the review of opengeos#1484 noted: a deleted feature keeps its neighbour's lock entry and line anchor, and a lock whose last layer goes stays on, empty. The pruning's comment says layer ids are compared too.

Walkthrough

The changes update COG metadata retrieval based on probe state and build target, add label-lock cleanup coverage, and coordinate tests that share fetching state. A plugin UI test also sets an explicit harness step limit.

Changes: COG Metadata Retrieval

Layer / File(s) Summary
Probe state and COG callers
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/embeddings.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/geolibre.rs
add_cog now takes a probe-state argument. Callers pass true after a successful native probe and false for other paths and targets.
Metadata retrieval and validation
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Dated URLs receive a native probe when downloads are not left to the app. Native metadata retrieval is blocking when probed; web retrieval remains asynchronous. Metadata warnings include available read errors. Tests cover dated URLs with app-managed downloads and probed readable or unreadable COGs.

Label-Lock Cleanup Coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lock cleanup behavior and coverage
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The documentation describes label-lock and line-anchor cleanup, including behavior when a layer ID is reused. Tests cover removing the final locked layer and deleting one of multiple locked features, including undo and redo.

Fetching Test Coordination

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared fetching turn and test serialization
crates/tiles/src/cache.rs, crates/tiles/src/logins.rs, crates/tiles/src/pmtiles.rs, crates/tiles/src/source.rs, crates/tiles/src/stac.rs, crates/tiles/src/draw.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/connectiontree.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/connectionui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/mapgpu.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/s3ui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/serviceui.rs
A test-only turn guard serializes tests that share fetching state. Affected tile and UI tests acquire the guard.
Bounded download requests
crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
Download tests acquire the fetching turn and use a helper that polls for a local request for up to 10 seconds.
Plugin test harness limit
crates/ui-egui/src/pluginsui.rs
The retry-and-remove test sets the harness maximum to eight steps.

Possibly related issues

  • opengeos/RustGIS#1331 — The changes preserve asynchronous metadata retrieval for web builds while changing retrieval for probed native COGs.
  • opengeos/RustGIS#1483 — The changes add tests for retaining another feature’s lock and anchor and for leaving an empty lock after layer removal.

The production caller currently passes the probe flag correctly, but its cache-clear behavior is not tested at that boundary, so a future regression could go unnoticed. A rare port-reuse race can also make the warning test fail spuriously; these are bounded test concerns.

Code review

Bugs: None found. The COG probed plumbing is consistent across all five add_cog callers. The probe is ?-gated where it matters, and the wasm branches compile without unused bindings. The new turn() lock handles poisoning, and no test nests turn(). The new engine tests use the correct ids: features start at 1, and Dataset::push hands them out that way.

Security: None found. Nothing here adds input parsing or I/O beyond what the existing code already does.

Performance:

  • Low confidence: when probed is true and the tile cache was emptied in between, add_cog now calls info_blocking, which can wait up to 120 s on the native UI thread. The existing probe_blocking already blocks up to 60 s on that path, so this follows an existing pattern rather than adding a new one.

Quality:

  • Doc claim inaccurate (posted inline, crates/engine/src/lib.rs:859-860): layer ids are not reused only after u32::MAX. restore_layers also rewinds the counter after a failed add. Medium-high confidence.
  • Low confidence: embeddings.rs:157 uses cfg!(not(target_arch = "wasm32")) where the same function uses #[cfg] attributes at line 152. Minor style point.
  • Low confidence: a_deleted_feature_leaves_its_neighbours_lock_alone (tests.rs) closely mirrors the existing a_deleted_feature_leaves_another_layers_lock_alone. It covers a different case (same layer, two features), so it is not a duplicate. The rename is fine as is.

AGENTS.md: No violations found. The new panic! in first_request already existed inline in the same test module, and the module's #[allow] covers unwrap. No new unwrap or expect appears in non-test code. No silent-loss paths were added.

Not verified: I had no shell, so I did not compile or run the tests. I did not confirm that with_max_steps exists on egui_kittest's harness builder; that is an external API. The author reports cargo test --workspace passing, and CI will confirm.

Prior concerns: There were no earlier review threads, so none were left alone.

Check the anchors after removing the last locked layer.

If cleanup leaves the final layer’s anchor behind, this assertion still passes. Check that label_lock_line_anchors is empty as well.

Suggested fix

     assert!(s.map().label_lock.as_ref().is_some_and(Vec::is_empty));
+    assert!(s.map().label_lock_line_anchors.is_empty());

Round 1, in 8cdfacd..90cb02d. The threads are answered inline. The rest:

  • CodeRabbit nitpick (tests.rs:4165): the test now also checks that the anchors are empty (ab7485a).
  • Bot, info_blocking up to 120 s: only on native paths that already blocked on probe_blocking. The case on the frame, a plugin's dated address, is fixed in fea7e5f.
  • Bot, cfg! in embeddings.rs:157: kept. add_cog ignores probed on the web, and the expression says what the line means.
  • Also in this round (Tests: UI tests that fail when the suite runs in parallel, and #1484's coverage follow-ups #1499), 90cb02d:
    • cache::tests::fetches_through_the_fetcher_once failed twice in fix(engine): add a source split into several layers polygons first, so its points stay on top #1491's CI, both times at cache.rs:2913. The cache starts fetches on whichever thread is already starting them, so another test's thread could run this test's fetch later. A login another test ends also empties the cache.
    • The fix: tiles gets the same turn as ui-egui. This test, the PMTiles test that fetches through the cache, and the tests that end a login take it, and it puts the native fetcher back when it ends.
  • Not fixed: service_logins::a_reopened_http_raster_recovers_its_pixels_after_login_without_reloading_unchanged_paths. It was seen failing once with the suite in parallel, but there's no log of it, and it passed three full engine runs here. Its likely cause is another engine test's login emptying the cache, but engine tests log in about 150 times, so it isn't changed without the failing assertion.

Checked: cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings (engine, tiles, ui-egui) and the engine's wasm32 check all pass. The tiles suite passed 3/3 runs (283 tests each) and the engine suite 3/3 runs (757 tests each).

Code review

Bugs

  • add_cog blocks on info_blocking (up to 120 s) whenever probed is set, without checking s.leave_downloads. embeddings.rs:157 passes probed = true natively, so a plugin's AlphaEarth add run in the app can wait on the frame, against the function's own doc comment. This adds to a wait the embeddings probe at line 153 already has. Suggested one-line gate posted inline. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • None found in the changed lines.

Performance

  • Nothing beyond the blocking wait above.

Quality

  • The test-turn mechanism is duplicated: tiles::cache::turn() (cache.rs:149) and ui-egui's fetching::turn() (lib.rs:4852) are near-identical static-mutex guards that clear the fetcher on drop. They can't easily share code across crates, so this is a nit for the release quality pass.
  • with_max_steps(8) in pluginsui.rs raises the step budget for a whole harness to cover a first-frame effect. The comment explains it. Nit, quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Never silent: the probe's Err(String) is discarded at layer.rs:3557 (== Ok(true)), and the info_blocking error is dropped too. The warning then says only "couldn't be read yet". Posted inline. Confidence: medium.
  • Test both ways: the new probed behaviour (cache cleared then framed, and the new warning) has no regression test. Only the leave_downloads dated branch is tested. Posted inline. Confidence: medium.
  • No unwrap/panic in non-test code, no unsafe, and the cfg(test) turn helpers are gated correctly. The wasm branch of add_cog looks consistent.

Not verified: I had no shell, so I did not run cargo test, clippy, or the wasm build. The PR's test-count claims are unchecked. The two tests the PR says were fixed "from reading the code" (adding_a_layer_keeps_the_view, unloaded_plugins_offer_retry_and_remove) are unverified.

Prior threads: 3 left alone. The lib.rs:860 doc thread (outdated) now matches its suggested wording, so it is addressed. The layer.rs:3556 "dated probes off the UI thread" thread is addressed for the plugin path; the remaining app-path blocking predates this PR. The layer.rs:3569 "report failed framing" thread is resolved in commits 8cdfacd to 90cb02d. The new point about discarded error text is different from it.

Round 2, in e57307a..5180047. The threads are answered inline. The two nits:

  • The two turn() helpers: they are alike, but they live in different crates' test code (tiles and ui-egui), which can't share it without a test-support crate. They're kept as they are.
  • with_max_steps(8) in pluginsui.rs: kept. The comment says why: a widget shown for the first time asks for one more pass.

Checked: cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings (engine, tiles, ui-egui) and the engine's wasm32 check all pass. The tiles suite passed 3/3 runs (283 tests each) and the engine suite 2/2 runs (758 tests each).

Bugs

  • layer.rs:3608: an undated address that isn't probed drops its info() error. The new why capture is ignored by the warning condition, so the layer is added unframed with no notice. Confidence: medium-high. Inline comment posted, with a one-line suggestion.
  • New engine test a_probed_cog_is_framed_after_the_cache_forgets_it (tests.rs:15673) touches the global cache without a turn. Engine commands (service, navigate, arcgis, service_logins) call cache::clear(), and the turn helper is not reachable from the engine test binary. serve_ranges serves indefinitely, so I don't expect a failure. Confidence: low.

  • None found. The new warnings redact the URL and the error text.

Performance

  • None found. The blocking reads are skipped when leave_downloads is set.

Quality

  • lib.rs:4972: panic! in first_request under record_tests, which allows only unwrap_used, while the crate root denies clippy::panic. Likely fails clippy -D warnings. Confidence: high-ish, not compiled here. Inline comment posted.
  • Nit, left for the release quality pass: a_plugins_dated_cog_is_added_without_waiting sets s.leave_downloads by hand; run_leaving_downloads does the same and restores the flag.

AGENTS.md

  • embeddings.rs:154: with leave_downloads, a non-COG file is no longer rejected and gets inPlace: true with no warning. The "Never silent" rule applies. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted.

Left alone, already raised in prior threads: 7 (leave_downloads gating, test coverage, cache-turn coverage, redaction, failed-framing warning, lib.rs doc, dated probe off the frame). All are fixed or answered in the current diff. None was re-raised.

Round 3, in 1ffbeac..d2a8b05. The threads are answered inline. The rest:

  • a_plugins_dated_cog_is_added_without_waiting set leave_downloads by hand: it now runs through run_leaving_downloads (d2a8b05).
  • The new engine test without a cache turn: that's by design. It forgets only its own address (cache::forget(url)), and what it checks, info_blocking, is meant to work when another test's login empties the cache.

Checked: cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings (engine, tiles, ui-egui) and the engine's wasm32 check all pass. The engine's COG and embeddings tests pass, and the full engine suite passed 2/2 runs (758 tests each).

Plugin path still waits on the frame, so the reply to the earlier thread doesn't match the code. The reply in e57307a says AlphaEarth's probe here "is skipped there too" under leave_downloads. This line has no such guard: probe_blocking(file)? still runs whenever s.leave_downloads is set. embeddings.add is a registered command (embeddings.rs:27, listed in cmd/tiles.rs:50), and Session::run_leaving_downloads documents that the app runs plugin commands this way so that "a plugin adding data by address doesn't freeze it".

Failure: a plugin calls embeddings.add with an AlphaEarth address the server is slow to answer, and the app frame blocks for up to the 60 s probe_blocking timeout. add_cog drops probed under leave_downloads, so the layer itself is not waited for; the wait is entirely this probe.

Confidence: high on the mismatch, medium-high on user impact (depends on the plugin reaching this command). Fix: skip the probe under leave_downloads and let the layer's own status report an unreadable file, or keep the probe and correct the reply. A test with a server that never answers, as a_plugins_dated_cog_is_added_without_waiting does, would cover it.

Code review

Bugs

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/embeddings.rs:153: the AlphaEarth probe still blocks the app frame when a plugin runs the command, so the reply in e57307a ("is skipped there too") does not match the code. Posted inline. Confidence: high on the mismatch, medium-high on impact.

Security

  • None found in the changed lines.

Performance

  • None new. info_blocking in add_cog can wait up to 120 s on the frame, but only when the cache was emptied between the probe and the read, and the probe before it already blocks. Low concern.

Quality

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3552: probed is shadowed in the tuple destructuring at line 3554, and probe == Ok(true) reads awkwardly. Left for the release quality pass.
  • crates/engine/src/tests.rs:~15700 (a_probed_cog_is_framed_after_the_cache_forgets_it): the "said" check retries three times, so it passes if any one attempt records the failure. The retry hides the flake rather than removing it. Confidence: medium. Left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • The new #[cfg(test)] helper first_request in crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs uses panic! under a module that allows only unwrap_used, which clippy::panic denies. I confirmed this against lib.rs:7 and lib.rs:4953. This is already raised in an open, unanswered thread on the same line, so I did not re-post it.
  • Turn guards are applied consistently across crates/tiles and crates/ui-egui, and none nest. I found no tests in the touched crates that replace the fetcher or end a login without a turn.
  • Wasm: the probed path is cfg-gated correctly, and cog::info / redact are used on both targets.

Prior review threads

  • 10 earlier threads exist. I re-raised 1 (the embeddings thread, because its answer is contradicted by the code). I left 9 alone: 7 are resolved or answered and their fixes are in the diff, and the panic! thread is still open and unanswered.

Confidence overall: medium-high on the findings above. I did not compile or run the tests (no Bash here); the test code was checked by reading.

crates/engine/src/tests.rs:15684-15686
Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Keep the unreadable COG endpoint isolated for the full assertion.

The test drops the listener before its add_cog calls. A parallel test can then reuse the port and serve a valid COG at /gone.tif, so the warning assertions can fail for an unrelated reason. Keep the port reserved with a small listener that accepts and immediately closes connections, and stop that listener after the assertions. Do not leave a bound listener that never accepts connections, because info_blocking can wait for up to two minutes.

Exercise the native layer.addUrl caller in the cache-clear test.

The new test verifies the add_cog(..., true) branch, but it does not verify that native layer.addUrl passes true. Add a caller-level scenario that clears the cache after the successful probe and asserts that layer.addUrl still returns bounds without a warning.
