fix: preserve diagnostic reasons after secret-bearing addresses - #1501
Preserve diagnostic reasons after known addresses whose query or fragment carries a token, signature, or other credential, without relaxing the generic redactor's conservative whitespace cutoff.
Add address-aware composition helpers in data::diagnostics and engine::sources, including runtime-binding handling and repeated-redaction coverage.
Migrate audited address-plus-reason callers in the desktop/browser UI, engine, data/tiles, and supporting download paths. Remove the obsolete whitespace-splitting sources::redact_text helper, which could expose an unescaped query-value continuation.
Keep unknown URLs in free-text history errors on the conservative redaction path. Update docs/privacy.md.
Cover userinfo, secret and unknown query names, fragments, unescaped whitespace, repeated address occurrences, longer credential-prefix collisions, and login/S3 bindings.
No dependencies or third-party code added. Test-only adjustments preserve credential checks while avoiding a collision with secret in the worktree path, put accepted fixture sockets into blocking mode before bounded reads, and check history executability instead of pinning diagnostic wording.
Testing
Passed RUST_TEST_THREADS=1 cargo xtask ci: formatting, Clippy with warnings denied, workspace tests, and layering. Existing ignored tests remain ignored.
Passed cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web with Homebrew LLVM on PATH.
Passed the diagnostics security suite and targeted engine/source/history and failure-UI regressions.
Passed address_failures_keep_status_without_credentials: a local HTTP 503 server exercises GeoTIFF probing, FlatGeobuf, GeoJSON, and project downloads; notices and diagnostic history retain status without credentials.
Ran ui_shot before and after against the same local HTTP 503 endpoint using a .tif?sig=… address. Before, the notice discarded the status; after, it retains http status: 503 without the signature.
Ran the CLI's layer.addUrl validation path with an unescaped token value: the expected exit-1 error retains the cellSize/bbox explanation without the token or its trailing word.
A default-parallel full run encountered a failure in the unchanged adding_a_layer_keeps_the_view COG-framing test. No camera behavior was changed; the complete serialized gate passes. Browser runtime and the Add From Service dialog were not exercised.
Error messages across data sources, downloads, services, tiles, and plugins now hide credentials, query values, and fragments in addresses while retaining useful failure details, such as HTTP status codes.
Sensitive address information is better protected in notices, diagnostics, reports, and copied history, including when errors contain unexpected address text.
Structured parameters remain usable in copied history while credential fields and secret URL values are sanitized.
Documentation
Updated privacy guidance to describe address redaction in troubleshooting messages and copied history.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The change adds shared address-formatting and redaction helpers. It updates diagnostic messages, notices, remote request errors, and copied-history parameters across the application. Tests cover retained failure reasons and removal of address secrets. Privacy documentation describes the redaction rules.
Changes: Address-aware diagnostics
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Address formatting and redaction rules crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs, crates/engine/src/sources.rs
New helpers sanitize known addresses and replace their occurrences in failure reasons before redacting the composed message. Parameter redaction preserves ordinary structured syntax and public URL queries while removing credential-bearing data.
Network, range, remote-read, and download errors use address-aware formatting. Tests check that failure reasons and HTTP status text remain while secrets are omitted.
Engine and source-operation failures crates/engine/src/cmd/*, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/service_logins.rs, crates/map/src/source.rs, crates/map/src/tiles.rs, crates/tiles/src/{address,arcgis_auth,mbtiles,pmtiles,portal,s3,source,stac}.rs
Address-aware formatting replaces direct address interpolation in validation, parsing, lookup, and download errors. Existing checks and failure conditions remain unchanged.
UI notices and failure details use sanitized addresses and composed reasons. History redaction and tests cover diagnostic output and copied scripts. The privacy documentation describes the redaction behavior.
opengeos/RustGIS#1333: This PR changes diagnostic redaction and request-failure recording, which this change builds on.
opengeos/RustGIS#1145: This PR adds runtime login-bound addresses and credential scrubbing, which this change handles when formatting errors.
opengeos/RustGIS#1461: This PR changes credential-name classification and source redaction, which this change uses when sanitizing addresses and replay parameters.

Failure messages now keep the reason after a redacted address, and copied history keeps harmless structured parameters while still removing credentials. No open merge-blocking concern remains.

Bug (regression, ~80% confidence): Shapefile part failures are now named twice in this notice. download_parts (crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3296) returns part_failed(&part_url, …), which already reads part_address: reason. Here message_with_address(&url, &e) uses the .shp address, so named is false and the result is shp_address: part_address: reason. The removed code had an explicit named check for this case ("An error that names its own address (a Shapefile's part) isn't named again").
Suggested fix: keep the part error's own address and skip re-naming it. Add a regression test where one part returns 404 and the notice names one address.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in c298ba73: Shapefile part failures retain their own sanitized address without a parent-source prefix; the regression verifies HTTP 404 and credential removal.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Possible leak (~40% confidence): the query and fragment are only cut for URLs (url is true only when the text contains ://). For a schemeless known address with a secret query and an unescaped tail, such as tokens.tif?token=abc def, redact(address) keeps the trailing word def, because the generic redactor treats it as prose.
Suggested fix: apply the ?/# cut to every known address, not only URLs. The existing credential_words_in_file_paths case has no ?, so it still passes. Add a schemeless case to known_addresses_preserve_reasons_through_repeated_redaction.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Design trade-off, worth a decision (~70% confidence it's a regression in visible info): every known address with a query now shows as …/path[query omitted], including non-secret parameters. Before this PR, sources::redact kept them, as the existing test secrets_are_never_kept shows (…?layer=x survives). layer.addUrl errors, the "Opening …" and "Reading …" notices, and the failure "Address" row all lose layer= and f=json, which are the parameters someone debugging an ArcGIS or WMS failure needs.
The PR documents this choice in docs/privacy.md. If it's intended, say so in the PR. Otherwise, keep the non-secret parameters when no secret name is present, as sources::redact does.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This is intentional: #1475 requires query removal, and diagnostics omit all queries/fragments, including unfamiliar signing parameters. Source/persistence redaction remains separate (reviewed at 4e6e0b81).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (for the release quality pass): this function sanitizes the address three times: data::address_in_message, a second data::address_in_message call as raw_shown, and address_in_message again. It then runs a global message.replace(&raw_shown, &shown) and a nested strip_prefix dedupe. The rules are hard to follow, and the global replace can rewrite unrelated text that happens to match.
Suggest computing the sanitized address once and composing directly, with the dedupe in one place.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The composition/readability refactor is left for the release quality pass; no additional behavior-changing failure was supplied (reviewed at 4e6e0b81).
No prior review threads exist on this PR, so none were left alone. I did not run the tests: I had no shell, so every finding below comes from reading the diff and the source.
Bugs
Shapefile part failures are named twice in the download notice.crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:4162 (regression, ~80% confidence). The part error already names its own address, but the .shp address is composed in front of it. The removed code had a special case for this. Inline comment posted.
A schemeless known address can leak the tail of an unescaped secret.crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:656 (~40% confidence). The ?/# cut only applies when the text contains ://. Inline comment posted.
Security
No secrets, injection or unsafe input handling found beyond the item above. Added non-test code has no unwrap, expect or unsafe. Slicing is guarded (get, truncate on an ASCII prefix).
Performance
Nothing significant. Each message sanitizes the address a few times, but the inputs are small.
Quality
Non-secret query parameters are dropped from every known address.crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:662 (~70% confidence that this is a visible regression). layer=, f=json and similar are now replaced by [query omitted]. The existing secrets_are_never_kept test shows the old sources::redact kept them. The PR documents the choice, so it needs a decision rather than a fix. Inline comment posted.
sources::message_with_address is over-complicated.crates/engine/src/sources.rs:318 (quality pass). It sanitizes the address three times and runs a global replace. Inline comment posted, with the quality-sweep marker.
Removed test coverage.failureui.rs lost its assertions for an address-less Reason::Other failure (too many redirects). Nit, left for the quality pass.
Translation coverage. Some composed messages drop the translatable "{url}: {e}" entry, and assistant/src/http.rs and chatgpt.rs reach rustgis_engine::data::diagnostics while the rest of the PR uses rustgis_data. Nits, left for the quality pass.
AGENTS.md
Test-both-ways is largely followed, and docs/privacy.md is updated. The UI change includes before and after screenshots.
I found no unwrap in non-test code and no layering problem: assistant already depends on engine.
The Shapefile regression above also breaks the "say what was lost, once" rule.

Address-less Reason::Other assertion: extra coverage is left for the release quality pass; no failing behavior was supplied.
Translation-template consistency for {url}: {e}: left for the release quality pass; no current catalog entry or demonstrable missing translation was found.
Assistant data import: no change needed. rustgis-assistant already depends on the engine and uses its data re-export; it has no direct data dependency, and this path does not violate layering.
GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).

Security (~85% confidence): for an ambiguous slash-containing userinfo such as https://alice:hidden/x@models.test/, address_in_message(url) returns the placeholder [address omitted]. This replace then substitutes host(url), and host() takes everything before the first /, so it returns https://alice:hidden. The user name and password land in couldn't reach https://alice:hidden: …. The PR's own rule (omit ambiguous userinfo) is broken on this path.
Suggested fix: don't substitute the host when the sanitized address is the omitted placeholder.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug (~50% confidence): the filter drops the requested address whenever the reason begins with any whitespace-free scheme://…: label. Example: crate::address::check(&next, …) errors name a redirect target, so the caller's message_with_address(requested, e) returns only next: a redirect from https to http. The address the user asked for disappears from the notice.
The Shapefile part case (test shapefile_part_failures_keep_one_address_and_the_http_reason) would be better handled at its call site, where the part's address is known, rather than by a generic label rule here.
Three inline comments are posted: crates/assistant/src/http.rs:104 and crates/engine/src/sources.rs:326. The two zarr.rs findings could not be posted inline because those lines are outside the PR diff, so they appear below.
Bugs
Assistant transport error reintroduces the password for ambiguous userinfo.http.rs:104 replaces the omitted-address placeholder with host(url). For https://alice:hidden/x@models.test/, that yields couldn't reach https://alice:hidden: …. Suggested fix is in the inline comment. Confidence ~85%. Needs a regression test.
Requested address can disappear from the notice. The label-drop filter in sources.rs:326 removes the requested address when the reason starts with any other scheme://…: label, such as a redirect target. Confidence ~50%.
Zarr open path still loses the reason for secret-bearing store URLs (not in the diff).crates/engine/src/cmd/zarr.rs:905 and :915 still use format!("{root}: {e}"). The generic redactor then cuts the message at the secret query. Fix: message_with_address(root, &e). Confidence ~70%. No test covers this path.
Security
The assistant leak above is the only security issue I found. Other paths I checked (history replay, plugin fetch, S3/login bindings) hold up on reading.
Performance
crates/tiles/src/cache.rs (~line 511) formats and sanitizes every failed tile fetch eagerly, even when debug logging is off. The cost is small, but it runs once per failed tile. Confidence ~40%. Low priority.
Quality (for the release quality pass)
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:3221 and :3676 keep the old starts_with(url) pattern. They are safe only because add_url re-sanitizes. Removing them would simplify the code.
The history.rs test change replaces the exact-wording assertion with a count of s.run( lines. It is weaker: it no longer checks that the failed run is commented out.
Other items raised earlier (triple sanitize in sources::message_with_address, the global replace) are left alone.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap/panic added to non-test code. The unwrap in tests/service_logins.rs is in test support.
Layering is respected: rustgis-data is a declared dependency of geolibre, plugins and assistant (via engine).
Interface strings are wrapped in i18n::fmt. Engine errors remain English, as elsewhere.
Already raised (left alone)
I left 5 earlier concerns alone, as they are already answered or fixed: the schemeless query tail, the all-queries-omitted behaviour (answered as intentional), the Shapefile double name (fixed in c298ba73), the ambiguous userinfo (fixed), and the history structured-parameter loss (fixed). The triple-sanitize refactor is deferred to the release quality pass.
