feat(layer): reload linked local data manually - #1505
Add layer.reloadData for linked local vectors, ordinary/time-following rasters, linked Zarr/GDAL File Geodatabase folders, original GDAL/DuckDB file provenance, and editable local GeoPackage tables. Parameters: optional layer (name/id, active by default) and discardEdits (false by default). Success returns the layer ID, original path and chosen table/subdataset or null.
Open and validate a fresh candidate before installation. Repair and reload share vector compatibility checks; raster candidates share band/palette validation. Retain presentation, identity, grouping, order and camera. Reset feature-specific state with counted saved-label-move notices; retain data/configuration on failure without adding an undo step.
Refuse dirty GeoPackages unless discard is explicit. Reload never writes to the source, refreshes the existing save-conflict baseline, and supports undo of in-memory edits. Undo cannot recover overwritten files or promise historical streamed contents.
Add the native layer context action beside source repair, the active-layer Data > Data Source ribbon action, and one Command Search destination. Dirty confirmations show insert/update/delete counts and offer Cancel or Discard Edits and Reload. The ribbon action runs immediately for clean data and opens confirmation only for pending edits. No Home/View duplicate.
Manual reload only: no monitor, polling, changed-on-disk status, automatic reload, archive reload, dependencies or serialized project fields. Snapshots without live provenance remain snapshots. Keep the roadmap item open.
Integration with independent PR 2: preserve both command entries when integrating crates/engine/src/cmd/repair.rs::commands; PR 1 owns the layer helpers, not repair_tiles. In crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, preserve the ordinary layer_menu Reload Data block separately from PR 2's tile/archive menu block. Potential additional overlap is crates/engine/src/cmd/plugins.rs::READS_FILES and docs/user-guide/index.md around source repair/reload help. No other worktree was edited or merged.
Related PRs #1440 and #1339 were both open/unmerged when checked. This change uses APIs present on this checkout, not their proposed APIs.
Testing
Verification
Observed result
cargo test -p rustgis-engine --test portable_projects
Real registered layer.reloadData returned the explicit unsupported-local-file error; project unchanged, no undo entry
Post-review focused Zarr tests
8 passed, including the failing-before/passing-after summary regression
Actual rebuilt CLI/MCP Zarr smoke
Reload mean 500; summary min/max/mean 501 after unchanged-metadata external rewrites
pre-commit run --all-files
Passed, including workspace Clippy and formatting
Verification used CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_DEBUG=0 and CARGO_PROFILE_TEST_DEBUG=0. Native optional-provider tests ran with GDAL 3.13.3 and a temporary official DuckDB 2.0.0 CLI; no repository dependency/configuration was added.
Reviewed with review-loop: 3 rounds, 1 finding fixed, 0 declined.
Full CI, installed pre-commit hooks, all specified standalone crate checks and the wasm build passed again after the review rounds. The reviewed source snapshot was unchanged after these gates.
Regression coverage includes streamed FGB replacement with unchanged size/mtime and a previously rendered source, compatible empty declarations, geometry/field/expression incompatibility and retry, chosen/missing GeoPackage tables, WAL updates, each dirty edit kind, discard/baseline/save/undo, DBF/PRJ sidecars, changed raster pixels/bands/palettes, cached time-following Zarr chunks, original GDAL folder/DuckDB reconversion, unsupported snapshot/remote sources, label moves and notices, and stale/cancelled/failed UI confirmations.
Actual ui_shot runs exercised the context menu, ribbon and Command Search at 1366 px. An external process atomically replaced a streamed FGB: the red point moved from -6 to +6 longitude while camera scale and presentation stayed unchanged. Removing the file showed a source-path error while retaining the drawn point; restoring it allowed retry. Dirty GeoPackage confirmation displayed one insert, one update and one deletion; clicking the actual modal Cancel retained them, explicit discard cleared them, and Undo restored them. A separate external raster rewrite changed black pixels to white with the same fixed 0–100 stretch and camera.
The wasm engine contract was exercised in a temporary example in the existing web crate, through the generated wasm-bindgen JavaScript wrapper. Verification limit: the full GIS web canvas still stalled; screenshot/accessibility requests timed out after 20 seconds and bringing the page forward after 30 seconds. No successful full-web-UI interaction is claimed. Temporary harness files and owned browser/server were removed/stopped.
UI evidence
Captured with the actual ui_shot application. Temporary fixture paths are redacted in the screenshot copies; the original evidence remains unchanged.

Walkthrough
The PR adds desktop Reload Data for linked sources. It validates replacement data before updating a layer and adds explicit handling for pending GeoPackage edits. The UI, tests, and documentation cover the reload flow. Automatic disk change detection remains separate.
Fresh DuckDB and GDAL conversions bypass conversion caches and retain diagnostics and empty-result information. Source relinking probes converted data and records source information.
The engine registers layer.reloadData, validates replacement geometry, fields, expressions, and raster requirements, and updates datasets and GeoPackage baselines. It also reports raster read notices and classifies reload as a file-accessing command.
The desktop UI provides Reload Data controls and a confirmation dialog for pending GeoPackage edits. It rechecks source identity before dispatch and keeps the dialog open after errors.
Reload validation and documentation crates/engine/tests/portable_projects.rs, crates/engine/tests/portable_projects/reload.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, docs/user-guide/index.md, ROADMAP.md
Tests cover supported source types, rejected replacements, pending edits, and undo behavior. The user guide documents the command and its behavior. The roadmap links the manual reload item to issue #1477.

Bug (medium-high confidence): the out.parts.sort_by_key(...) line was removed, and nothing re-sorts out.parts afterwards. The per-family counts query at line 707 is GROUP BY ALL with no ORDER BY, so the order of out.parts (and therefore the order layers are appended for a mixed-geometry layer.addSql result) is now whatever DuckDB returns. The old sort made it Family::ALL order. The matching test in crates/engine/src/tests.rs was changed from asserting ["Trip (points)", "Trip (lines)"] to lookups by name, which hides the change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug, silent data loss (high confidence): when reloading a DuckDB table, the parts of other geometry families are dropped here by retain, and their row counts are not added to out.skipped or reported anywhere. source.rs only notes out.skipped (rows with no geometry), so a points layer whose table gained LINESTRING rows loses them with no notice. The test reload_reconverts_duckdb_table_and_keeps_only_its_original_geometry_branch checks that the line row is ignored but never checks for a notice. AGENTS.md requires a notice with a count for dropped features.
Suggested fix: count the dropped rows (e.g. a wrong_family total), return it on Output, and have relinked push a note such as "DuckDB: N rows of another geometry type were left out". Add a notice assertion to the test in both directions (clean input gives none).
Also, when the only rows are of another family, the error falls through to NO_ROWS ("the query returned no rows"), which is misleading.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
AGENTS.md (notices), medium confidence: each stderr line from ogr2ogr becomes its own GDAL: … notice. AGENTS.md asks for one notice per kind with a count. GDAL can repeat the same warning once per feature, and with -skipfailures removed on this path, a fresh reload can emit many of them. Group identical lines and report each kind once with its count, for example by normalising the text and tallying it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug, duplicate notice (medium confidence):Session::run already posts every top-level command error (crates/engine/src/lib.rs ~1495-1498). Errors coming from form.dispatch → app.run("layer.reloadData") therefore reach the user twice: once from the engine and once from this block. Check whether RustGisApp::run also notifies, then keep only one notice. The notice here is only needed for failures that happen before the engine call (Form::new, pending).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Accuracy, low-medium confidence: the probe reads with Request { limit: 1 }, so probe.skipped counts only the rows the reader passes before its first readable feature, not the whole source. This note, "N rows could not be read while checking the replacement", can therefore understate the loss, and the rest of the rows are not reported anywhere else. Either read the whole source to get a real count, or word the note as a lower bound ("at least N"). I did not confirm reader-specific skip behaviour, so please check it against the FlatGeobuf/GeoJSON readers.
DuckDB reload drops other-family rows silently (high confidence). crates/data/src/source/duckdb.rs:728: retain removes the parts of other geometry families without counting them or reporting them. Reloading a points layer whose table gained LINESTRING rows loses those rows with no notice. The test checks the drop but not the notice. Inline comment posted.
DuckDB part order is no longer deterministic (medium-high). duckdb.rs:722: the sort_by_key into Family::ALL order was removed. The counts query is GROUP BY ALL with no ORDER BY, so mixed-geometry layer.addSql layers can be appended in any order. The test was changed from asserting the order to looking layers up by name. Inline comment with a suggested restore posted.
Duplicate error notice on a failed reload (medium). crates/ui-egui/src/reloaddata.rs:93: Session::run already notifies command errors, and this block notifies the same error again. Inline comment posted.
Security
Nothing found. Reload only reads local paths (is_local), and the web build refuses it. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic, or unsafe.
Performance
reloaddata.rsForm::pending recomputes versions.changes(&features) on every frame while the dialog is open, which is O(n) on large GeoPackages (low confidence, not posted).
Quality
The DuckDB tests lost their diagnostic assertions (Parser Error, Permission Error, no geometry column, NO_ROWS) and now check only is_err(). This weakens regression coverage. Grouped here per the quality-pass rule.
ribbon.rs:2339 uses the redo icon for Reload Data, the same icon as Redo and Sync (low).
repair.rs:77 reads "has 1 inserts" and uses the file path as the subject (nit).
AGENTS.md
One notice per kind (medium). crates/data/src/source/gdal.rs:387: each ogr2ogr stderr line becomes its own GDAL: notice, and fresh conversions no longer use -skipfailures. Inline comment posted.
Probe count may be partial (low-medium). crates/map/src/source.rs:650: the probe reads with limit: 1, so probe.skipped is a lower bound, not the total. Inline comment posted.
Checked and fine: layering, tl! use, the engine command does not open dialogs, the ui.* command does, and editable GeoPackage layers carry no source, so reload_editable cannot leave a stale handle.
Earlier review threads: 0 (none were on this PR), so nothing was left alone for that reason. Five inline comments were posted.

Review comments at @crates/data/src/source/duckdb.rs:
- Around line 722-730: Restore deterministic family ordering in the DuckDB
result handling by sorting out.parts using the established Family::ALL order
before the selected-family filtering and empty-part handling. Keep the existing
filtering and empty-output behavior unchanged.
- Around line 661-663: Update the reload cleanup path around selected.is_none
and external::prune so obsolete full conversions are reclaimed even when no
ordinary conversion runs pruning. Establish which conversions are still
referenced by layers or undo snapshots and preserve those files; prune only
conversions confirmed obsolete.
Review comments at @crates/data/src/source/gdal.rs:
- Around line 229-234: Update the layer lookup around list(src) to search the
requested layer using an uncapped listing, so readable layers beyond the
64-layer display cap can be found. Preserve the cap for bulk conversion and keep
the existing exact-name and case-insensitive matching behavior.
- Around line 355-359: In the fresh GDAL reload path, an empty filtered
conversion may leave no temporary FlatGeobuf, causing `open_path` to fail before
`replace_source` runs. Ensure the temporary candidate is a valid empty dataset
declared with the selected geometry family before probing it, while preserving
the existing read-failure handling for candidates that do exist.
- Around line 547-554: Extend the fresh-conversion test around
`convert_one_fresh_in` with an M-only point fixture, alongside the existing Z
and XY cases. Assert that the M-only conversion includes the loss notice and
sets `zm_dropped` to true.
Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/gpkg.rs:
- Around line 381-384: When `gpkg.discardEdits` replaces the dataset, reset
saved label moves and the label lock so reused feature IDs cannot inherit stale
label state; match the reset and notice behavior used by the editable reload
path.
Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/plugins.rs:
- Line 309: Update the saved-workflow file-access classification in READS_FILES
to include layer.reloadData, so the saved-workflow gate blocks it alongside
gpkg.discardEdits.
Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/repair.rs:
- Around line 186-188: Update the label validation in the `required.extend`
block to check saved label fields and expressions regardless of
`l.labels.enabled`. Ensure disabled labels still validate the configured field
and expression references so re-enabling them cannot leave labels without their
source data.
- Around line 115-116: Move the fresh candidate creation around
`src.relinked(path, table)` off the UI thread so large-layer conversion does not
block rendering or input. Use the existing worker mechanism, then validate and
install the completed candidate on the UI thread; preserve the current error
handling and establish the appropriate worker and UI-thread handoff from the
surrounding repair flow.
- Around line 190-193: Validate fields used by graduated symbology in the reload
flow before installing the candidate: when a matching field changes from numeric
to nonnumeric, reject the reload instead of allowing affected features to use
the fallback symbol. Reuse the existing field matching around required and
fields, and preserve the current handling of other fields.
Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/zarr.rs:
- Around line 538-547: Update the reload flow around the selected-period slice
and `ZarrTime` construction to reconcile slider windows with the replacement
store’s dates, so the raster is visible at a slider step; if no valid
reconciliation is possible, reject the reload. Preserve the existing behavior
for replacement dates that overlap a slider window.
- Line 1003: Update the ordinary-slice reload path that returns SeriesSource so
it uses a fresh cache generation instead of hard-coding read_generation to 0,
and propagate that generation through zarr.reduce and cube analysis. Reuse the
established generation mechanism so reloaded slices and their analysis share the
same generation.
Review comments at @crates/engine/src/lib.rs:
- Around line 796-797: Update the same_source exemption so matching same_opening
identity and unchanged reads are not enough to accept an edit: establish that
the streamed source was not replaced or reopened before allowing the change.
Reject edits whose rows would be overwritten by the next window read, while
preserving the existing handling of unrelated row edits.
Review comments at @crates/engine/tests/portable_projects/reload.rs:
- Line 425: Extend the reload test around the active-layer selection to include
a second spatial table, select the non-first table named survey using layer
rather than table, and verify reload returns its updated data. Then drop survey
while retaining the other table and verify reload fails, ensuring it does not
fall back to the first table.
- Line 390: Update the reload test around GdalOrigin so it exercises the public
import path: add the File Geodatabase fixture through layer.addData with
streaming enabled instead of assigning provenance directly. Then change the
folder and assert that reload returns the changed features, preserving the
test’s coverage of provenance through import.
Review comments at @crates/map/src/raster.rs:
- Around line 309-311: In the project-opening flow, assign a fresh process-local
value to Raster’s read_generation before following reopened layers, so cached
slices and pending reads from the previous generation cannot be reused. Preserve
the serde skip behavior and avoid changing generation handling outside project
opening.
Review comments at @crates/map/src/source.rs:
- Around line 653-655: Update load_all_counted to preserve the layer’s existing
Z/M-loss marker when replacing the dataset with the XY-converted
materialization; ensure the resulting marker remains true if either the original
layer or the conversion recorded dimension loss, matching chunk_export’s
behavior.
- Around line 639-647: Update the replacement-source validation path to read and
validate the candidate’s full payload, including later GeoParquet row groups,
before installing it; the current one-feature probe via handle.read with limit:
1 is insufficient. Validate through the candidate handle, and keep the live
source unchanged if any payload read fails.
Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs:
- Around line 971-978: Remove the special-case skip for layer.reloadData in the
command-search loop over app.session.registry.commands. Keep the registry entry
in the search results when the command is unavailable so Command Search can
display its disabled reason; preserve the existing command_available and
command_matches filtering.
Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/reloaddata.rs:
- Around line 99-153: Update show and its dispatch path to recheck pending edit
counts when the user confirms, since edits may have been cleared while the
dialog was open. When all counts are zero, perform the clean reload without
requesting discard; preserve the discard path when pending edits remain.
- Around line 89-96: Update the reload-confirmation flow that assigns
`app.dialogs` with `open: Some("reloadData")` so it does not discard an
already-open dialog or its inputs; defer showing the confirmation while another
dialog is open, or preserve and restore that dialog and its state afterward.

If a later GeoParquet row group is corrupt, the one-feature probe can miss it. Reload then reports success and clears the current view, but a later view read can fail. Validate the candidate’s payload before installing it.

Update the replacement-source validation path to read and validate the

insufficient. Validate through the candidate handle, and keep the live source

Preserve dimension-loss metadata when loading all features.
After a GDAL reload drops Z or M, Load All Features replaces the dataset with one materialized from the XY conversion. The loss marker becomes false, so later exports omit the warning. Preserve the layer’s marker in load_all_counted, as chunk_export does.

Silent state loss, medium confidence.label_lock is a map-wide Option<Vec<(LabelKey, LockedPlace)>>, and LabelKey is (layer id, feature id, …) (crates/map/src/symbology.rs:2800). reset_labels clears the whole lock unconditionally, but the notice only fires when moved > 0. So reloading one layer that has no saved label moves drops the locks held by every other layer, with no notice.
Keeping the whole-lock reset is defensible, because a partial lock would hide this layer's labels. The loss still has to be disclosed, the same way the move reset is. For example, when the lock held entries, report how many were cleared, such as "N label lock(s) reset in {name}: {layer} reloaded". Add a test in both directions: a lock on another layer with no moves on the reloaded one gives the notice, and no lock gives none.
Reloading a layer clears the map-wide label lock even when that layer had no saved label moves, and no notice is given, so other layers' locked labels are silently dropped. Medium confidence. Posted inline at crates/engine/src/cmd/repair.rs:154.
Security
Nothing new found. layer.reloadData is added to READS_FILES in plugins.rs, and the reload is refused for remote and snapshot sources. Remote sources are gated by is_local. The DuckDB path keeps the confined-read check.
Performance
Nothing new beyond the existing thread about running the reload on the UI thread.
Quality
Nit, left for the release quality pass: the DuckDB tests at crates/data/src/source/duckdb.rs:1180 and :1205 now assert only is_err(). The confinement test at :1205 can no longer tell a refusal from an unrelated failure. High confidence on the observation, low on impact.
Nit: discard_edits and reload_editable replace the whole Dataset. That resets crs_incomplete to false, a field the old discard path left alone. Low confidence that it matters.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe appears in non-test code in the diff. unreachable! appears only in tests.
New UI strings use tl! or i18n::fmt. The ribbon tooltip is translated by big.
The change is wasm-gated correctly and adds no dependencies.
The ROADMAP entry stays open, as the PR says.
Earlier concerns: I left 26 earlier review threads alone (25 open, 1 resolved), because the code they point at is unchanged. Among them are the DuckDB other-family silent drop, the GDAL per-line notices, the duplicate error notice, the dropped dialogs on reload, the label-lock and label-move gaps in discardEdits, the load-all Z/M marker, and the Zarr cache generation.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 523d4d0 to PR head a4663bd).
GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).

Full CI, installed pre-commit hooks, all specified standalone crate checks and the wasm build passed again after the review rounds. The reviewed source snapshot was unchanged after these gates.
Regression coverage includes streamed FGB replacement with unchanged size/mtime and a previously rendered source, compatible empty declarations, geometry/field/expression incompatibility and retry, chosen/missing GeoPackage tables, WAL updates, each dirty edit kind, discard/baseline/save/undo, DBF/PRJ sidecars, changed raster pixels/bands/palettes, cached time-following Zarr chunks, original GDAL folder/DuckDB reconversion, unsupported snapshot/remote sources, label moves and notices, and stale/cancelled/failed UI confirmations.
Actual
ui_shotruns exercised the context menu, ribbon and Command Search at 1366 px.
