perf(analysis): zonal means test only the cells in their zone's window - #1508
zonal_means, and class_means built on it (the supervised classifier's training), tested every cell of the raster against each zone: one longitude/latitude projection and one point test per cell, for every zone. They now test only the cells in the zone's window.
zone_window takes the zone's longitude/latitude extent, samples its outline at 64 points a side, places the samples on the raster's grid and adds two cells to spare. On a longitude/latitude raster that window is exact. On a projected one, a continuous projection takes the extent's outline to the outline of its image, so the image's extremes lie on the sampled outline. The spare cells cover a side bowing between samples. If any sample can't be placed, the window is the whole raster.
Inside the window, each cell gets exactly the old test, in the same row-major order: its centre in longitude/latitude, inside the outer ring and in no hole (polygon_contains). So the sums, the means and the pixel counts are the same as before. Progress still totals the raster's rows per zone: the rows outside the window are counted at once, and cancelling is checked on each row inside it.
I first used the Placed scanline that Zonal Statistics uses. I dropped it, because it picks a zone's cells differently: it counts holes even-odd, a centre on a top or bottom edge goes the other way on a north-up raster, and edges are straight in pixels on projected rasters. That would have changed the output.

Tests
zonal_means_are_those_of_testing_every_cell compares the means' bits and the pixel count with a test of every cell. It runs three zones on a longitude/latitude raster and on a Web Mercator one:
a polygon with a hole and slanted edges;
a hole reaching past its outer ring, which counts nowhere;
edges through rows' and columns' centres.
It also checks that a zone off the raster has none. single_passes_stop_when_cancelled still checks that class means count all their progress and stop when cancelled.
cargo xtask ci checks fmt, clippy, tests and layers, and the wasm build passes. Besides the known box-only failures, one run failed tests::a_zarr_step_is_read_off_the_frame_in_the_app. That's an engine Zarr test this change doesn't touch, and it passed 5 out of 5 times when re-run, so it looks flaky.

Improvements
Polygon-based raster averages now limit calculations to the area around each polygon, which can improve performance on large rasters.
Calculation progress reflects rows skipped outside the polygon area as well as rows processed.
Results continue to use raster cell centers and polygon containment, including for zones with holes, slanted edges, or boundaries that cross cells.
Zones outside the raster are handled alongside zones in longitude/latitude, Web Mercator, and polar rasters.
zonal_means now scans a raster window around each zone extent instead of testing every raster cell. The change updates row-based progress reporting and adds tests that compare windowed results with a full-raster scan.

Summary
Windowed scan and progress crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs
zone_window samples and projects the zone extent to determine a raster window, adds a two-cell margin, and falls back to the full raster if projection fails. means_under scans the window and reports skipped and scanned rows. class_means advances progress by the reported row count. Tests compare results with a full-raster scan across geographic, Web Mercator, and polar rasters.
opengeos/RustGIS#1416: This PR adds class_means and the cancellable row callback that this change updates to report row counts.

A rabbit maps the zone with care, And skips the rows beyond its square. The cell-centre checks remain in place, While windowed scans pick up the pace. Three projections join the test, And full-scan results confirm the rest.
Possible silent cell loss on large zones in curved projections (confidence: medium, ~60%). zone_window samples each zone side at 1/64 of its length and adds a fixed 2-cell margin. The bow between samples grows with zone size, so a wide zone on a strongly curved CRS (Albers, polar stereographic) can bow past that margin. Edge cells inside the zone would then be skipped without any notice. The existing test only uses a Web Mercator raster and small zones, so it can't catch this. Posted inline at crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs:810 with a suggested direction (sample at about one cell's spacing, plus a wide-zone test on a curved CRS).
Security
None found. The change is internal arithmetic over raster and zone geometry. Non-finite projected coordinates fall back to the whole raster, and the window clamps to the raster bounds.
Performance
None found. The window cuts the per-cell projection work as described. The per-zone sampling cost is negligible.
Quality
Nothing I'd raise now. I checked the 140-column limit (no added line exceeds it) and the test module's unwrap() use, which matches the rest of the file (53 existing uses).
AGENTS.md
No violations found. There are no unwrap/expect/panic calls in non-test code, no unsafe, and no new silent loss. The change is performance-only, so no new notice is needed.
Prior reviews: the thread file had no existing threads, so I left none alone.
I didn't build or run the tests, since I had no shell access. The findings rest on reading the diff and the surrounding source.

Scope: One file, crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs (+152/−14). I read the diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, the prior review threads, and the surrounding code (GeoTransform::to_pixel, Transformer::from_lonlat/to_lonlat, Extent, control::advance, Crs). I could not compile or run the tests here (no shell), so the claims below rest on reading the code, not on a test run.
Bugs
None confirmed. I checked the window logic and found no path where a cell that passes e.contains and polygon_contains falls outside the window:
The corner, side and halving logic in zone_window is consistent with to_pixel (no rotation term in GeoTransform).
rows.end - rows.start cannot underflow, because the clamp is monotone and c0 <= c1.
Empty extents, NaN or infinite coordinates, and off-raster zones all return an empty or whole-raster window and never panic.
The progress total (height per polygon) is unchanged.
Confidence: high for the paths above.
Security
None found. No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. Casts from f64 saturate, and f64::clamp bounds are valid.
Performance
None. Each polygon now costs about 260 projections plus a halving pass proportional to its outline in cells, instead of a projection for every raster cell. r.transformer() returns a reference, so the per-sample call is cheap.
Quality
Nit, posted inline at crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs:829: the far condition is hard to scan. The inline suggestion names the min/max spans without changing the logic.
Nit, not posted: the stretches entries are a five-field tuple (t0, p0, t1, p1, depth). A small struct would read better.
Nit, not posted: the new test does not cover non-finite zone coordinates or a zero pixel size through zone_window's place failure path. Both return the whole raster, which is correct, but no test checks that the output still matches testing every cell.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. Layering is respected, the new unwrap calls are inside the test module like the existing tests, and no user-visible strings or assets were added.
Prior threads
I left 3 earlier concerns alone, as they are already raised:
The bow-between-samples bound (outdated, fixed in b0209fb and resolved).
The github-actions bow concern (resolved).
The coderabbit note on cancellation inside wide rows in class_means (unresolved). The column loop is unchanged by this PR, so the problem is still present but not new.

zone_window's "far" prune uses the chord between two projected samples as its reach bound, but a curve's arc is at least as long as its chord. A stretch that folds back toward the raster could be skipped while cells still fall inside the bow. Posted inline at crates/analysis/src/rasterops.rs:829. Confidence: low (~25%). It needs a projection fold within a 1/64-side stretch, so it is rare.
I found no other correctness problems. The window is a superset of the cells whose lon/lat centre is inside the extent. Sums, counts and iteration order match the old per-cell test. Progress still totals height per zone, and the early returns cover empty extents and failed placements. Non-finite and overflowing coordinates fall back to the whole raster and do not panic.
Security
None found. The diff adds no unsafe, no unwrap or expect in non-test code, and no new input handling beyond the bounded clamps.
Performance
The window cuts the per-zone work as the PR's table claims. Subdivision only happens for stretches near the raster, so the extra projection calls stay bounded by the outline's length in cells. Confidence: medium. I did not run the benchmark.
Quality
Nothing new beyond the earlier threads. The far naming nit and the in-row cancellation point were already raised and answered, so I left them alone.
AGENTS.md
No violations. Lines are within the 140-column rustfmt.toml limit as far as I can tell by eye. I could not run cargo fmt, clippy, or the tests in this environment.
Prior concerns: 5 earlier threads on this PR were left alone. Four were already answered or fixed (the bow-between-samples issue, the curved-projection window, cancellation within rows, and sinusoidal coverage). The remaining one is the far naming nit, which the author deferred to the release quality pass.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base b30aefd to PR head e247f56).
I found no new bugs, security issues or AGENTS.md violations in this change. I read the diff, the surrounding means_under/class_means code, and the helpers it depends on (GeoTransform::to_pixel, Extent::is_empty/expand/contains, Transformer::to_lonlat/from_lonlat, the sinusoidal inverse, Raster::new). I did not run cargo xtask ci or the tests, so this is from reading the code only.
Bugs: none found (high confidence). The window only skips cells whose centres fall outside the sampled outline's bounds, and the sampling plus halving keeps the bow between samples under a cell. The 2-cell margin covers the rest. Row-major order is unchanged, so the sums are bit-identical. r.height - (rows.end - rows.start) cannot underflow because the window is clamped and start <= end. An empty extent or any unplaceable point falls back to the whole raster. For sinusoidal rasters, out-of-domain inverses return None, and wrapped longitudes only widen the window.
Security: none. The change works only on raster geometry that is already loaded. It does no parsing or I/O.
Performance: nothing worth raising. The window costs roughly 260 projections plus halving per zone, which scales with the zone's perimeter in cells rather than its area. Halving also runs on lon/lat rasters where the outline is straight, but that is a few thousand extra projections per zone, which is negligible.
Quality: nothing new. The open points are the naming of far and the cancellation granularity inside wide rows. Both are already in threads that the author has deferred to the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md: no violations found.
The new non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic, unsafe or indexing.
The halving stack is depth-capped at 40.
It uses std::ops::Range and no std::time, so the wasm build is unaffected.
No user-visible text is added.
The longest new line is within the 140-column rustfmt width.
The new test compares against testing every cell on both lon/lat and projected rasters, including a polar case.
Earlier concerns left alone: 6. These are the sagitta bow, the cancellation granularity, the naming of far, sinusoidal coverage, the chord-based prune, and the conservative window. The sagitta and window concerns were fixed in b0209fbe. The rest were answered. I did not re-post the chord-versus-arc prune. Its answer documents an assumption that holds for the sides this code samples: lon/lat rectangle edges through smooth projections. The antimeridian and antipode discontinuities I checked only widen the window.

Check cancellation during window subdivision
For a tall, narrow raster with a training polygon alongside it, zone_window can process millions of stretches before class_means checks cancellation. A cancellation requested during setup must wait for that work to finish. Check cancellation before and periodically during subdivision, while preserving the uncancellable zonal_means path.
