perf(data): band statistics count on several threads, summing in the band's order - #1509
BandStats::compute_with runs for every raster band made or read. It is now counted on several threads for a band of more than about a million values:
The count, the range and whether every value is whole are counted on the worker threads, while the calling thread makes the sums.
The histogram, the bit set of whole values within 16 bits, and the set of distinct values (which gives up past 256) are then counted on the threads, and their results are merged in order.
The sums of values and squares stay on the calling thread, in the band's order. Summing them in parts would change the mean and spread in the last bit.
on_runs and on_runs_beside follow the cores-track rules:
at most 16 threads, and at most one per 256 Ki values;
the calling thread works too;
one thread under 2^20 values, and one in the browser (cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32"));
a worker's panic is raised again;
std::thread::scope, so no new dependency.
valid gains a Sync bound. Both callers' closures capture only an Option<f32>.
Measured (release, 40 threads available), one 4000 × 4000 band:

0.070 s

0.063 s

0.232 s

About 0.03 s of the remaining time is the sequential sums.
Same output
Counts, bit sets and sets don't depend on the order. The merged track is true exactly when the union has at most 256 values. Min and max are folded in runs, and Rust's min already treats ±0 either way. stored overview statistics are applied after the merge, as before.
Tests
band_stats_on_several_threads_are_one_threads compares every field, to the bit, with a copy of the old one-pass code. It uses five 2-million-value bands: byte-like values, 200 negative whole values, more than 256 whole values, fractions, and one with NaN, no-data, −0 and 0. It also checks a band too small for threads and one with no valid value.
cargo xtask ci checks fmt, clippy, tests and layers, and the wasm build passes. The only failures are the known box-only ones.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Performance
Statistics, histograms, and distinct-value categories for larger raster datasets are now calculated using multiple processing threads on supported platforms. Smaller datasets continue to use a single processing run.
Reliability
Results remain consistent across processing modes, including sums, ranges, validity and integer metadata, histograms, and distinct-value categories.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Band statistics use ordered runs to calculate range metadata, histograms, and categories for larger native inputs. Sum and squared-sum accumulation remains in input order. Tests compare results across thread counts with a one-pass reference.

Summary
Parallel run processing crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs
compute and compute_with delegate to compute_on. Multiple-thread processing accumulates sums and squared sums in input order and calculates range metadata across ordered runs. Small inputs and wasm32 use one thread; larger native inputs use up to 16 threads.
Merged tallies and validation crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs
Per-run histogram and distinct-value tallies are merged. Tests compare statistics, histograms, and categories with a one-pass reference for multiple thread counts and input cases.

The change is one file, crates/data/src/raster/mod.rs. It moves band statistics onto threads for bands of 2^20 values or more. I read the split, the merge, and the track/categories logic, and found no correctness bug in the threaded path. The findings below are about the single-threaded path, panic safety, and test coverage.
Bugs
Sign of zero in min/max (low, ~30%). The bit-equality claim depends on f64::min/max ordering ±0, which Rust leaves unspecified. Strict comparisons would make it deterministic. (inline comment posted at mod.rs:196)
Security
None found.
Performance
Single-threaded path does three passes instead of two (sums, range, tally). That path covers every wasm band and every band under 2^20 values, and the PR only measures the threaded path (medium, ~70%). (inline at mod.rs:191)
Quality
The fallback runs.next().unwrap_or_else(|| Tally::run(&[], &valid, b)) is unreachable, because on_runs always returns at least one run. This can wait for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
Never crash: scope.spawn panics if the OS refuses a thread, so a band load could panic instead of falling back (low-medium, ~40%). The same pattern already exists in crates/render/src/raster.rs. (inline at mod.rs:313)
Never crash: a worker panic is re-raised with resume_unwind. The worker code has no panic sites, so the practical risk is low (~20%).
The test's threaded branch only runs when available_parallelism() is at least 2. On a one-CPU runner it compares the sequential path with itself (~50%). (inline at mod.rs:1291)
Otherwise the change follows the repo rules: no unwrap/expect/panic! in the new code, no unsafe, and the wasm path is gated with cfg!. The layering is unchanged.
I did not build, test, or run clippy. Those checks are the author's claim and are not verified here.
Earlier concerns: none. There were no prior review threads on this PR, so I left none alone.

Preserve result order and ensure panics from spawned workers still propagate.
- Around line 1282-1284: Extend the test’s band cases with a pattern containing
257 distinct whole-number values, updating the array length accordingly. Keep
the existing cases unchanged so the comparison covers behavior beyond the
256-category bit-set boundary.
- Around line 1282-1286: Update the test data and assertions around the `bytes`,
`few whole`, `wide whole`, `fractions`, and `gaps` patterns to deterministically
create multiple runs, each with at most 256 distinct negative integers, whose
union has more than 256 distinct values. Assert that the merge result’s
`categories` is `None`, ensuring the test exercises the union-size cutoff.
- Line 1291: The parallel-equivalence test currently relies on available
parallelism and may exercise only one run. Add a deterministic test path that
forces multiple runs independently of available_parallelism, then compare the
merged BandStats result with the one_pass result; leave the existing computation
behavior unchanged.

I found no bugs, security issues, or AGENTS.md violations. The threaded merge keeps the one-pass results: counts, min/max (first of equal values in band order), sums, histogram, and distinct-value categories all match, and the sums are added in band order. I checked the thread-count limits, the wasm guard, the spawn-failure fallback, worker panic propagation, and the new test's oracle and band layouts against the code.
Bugs: none found.
Security: none found.
Performance
The calling thread's sums pass also computes the range, whole flag and count, and calls valid once more per value, all discarded. A sums-only fold gives identical results and does less work on the serial pass that bounds the threaded time. Low confidence (~35%) that it matters measurably. Posted inline with a suggestion (mod.rs:202).
Quality
The doc on on_runs_beside says the calling thread runs beside "first", but it starts the other runs, then runs beside, then its own chunk. Nit, left for the release quality pass with the <!-- quality-sweep --> marker (mod.rs:322).
The test comment "two runs keep theirs" holds only for a two-thread split. Nit, not posted.
The spawn-failure fallback (Err(run) => f(run)) has no test, since it can't be forced easily. Not posted.
AGENTS.md
No violations. Wasm stays on one thread, the cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32") guard is present, the threads follow the cores-track rules (at most 16, one per 256 Ki values, one below 2^20), there is no unwrap or expect, and the change adds no user-visible text.
Prior review threads: 9 earlier threads are on this PR. I left all 9 alone and did not re-raise them, because the code they point at has since changed and the problems are addressed:
The ±0 min/max concern is fixed by lower/higher.
The spawn-panic concern is fixed by Builder::spawn_scoped with a fallback.
The one-CPU test concern is fixed because the thread count is now forced.
The 257-value bit-set test is covered by the 257 small whole band.
The 32-bit overflow in at is fixed with u64.
The single-thread "three passes" concern no longer applies: the code now makes two passes, the same as before.
The distinct-merge cutoff test is covered by the halves band. Removing the union check would make categoriesSome for two threads and fail the assertion at line 1336. The thread is still unresolved, so the author may want to resolve it.
Coverage: the new test forces thread counts 1, 2, 7 and 16, so the merge is exercised on any machine.
