fix(ui): test authenticated service connections before saving - #1522
A new WMTS connection with Basic authentication could only be saved: Test stayed disabled even after entering credentials and consenting to unencrypted HTTP. New authenticated web-service forms can now test the entered login before saving.
The test owns a disposable, origin-bound request binding and never borrows a saved connection's login or changes its definition. Form edits, cancellation and project changes revoke the temporary binding and discard late results. Existing HTTP consent and transport redirect protections remain in force; edited saved service definitions retain their existing save-before-test guard. The public command contract is unchanged.
Passwords and keys bypass command parameters/history and are cleared from the form when the temporary test starts. Saving a session login afterward requires entering the secret and HTTP consent again. The user guide explains this workflow.
No dependency added. No external project's code was followed.
Testing
cargo xtask ci passed: formatting, workspace Clippy, workspace tests and layer checks.
Targeted runs passed: 11 service-login UI integration tests, 9 connection-dialog unit tests and 45 engine service-login tests. Coverage includes Basic/header credentials, saved-login isolation, HTTP consent, cache isolation/revocation and late results after edits, cancellation or project changes.
Rebuilt and ran the actual ui_shot example before and after. A controlled local WMTS endpoint verified the received Basic credential: correct credentials produced WMTS: 1 layers, wrong credentials produced HTTP 401, and denied HTTP consent sent no request. The connection remained unsaved.
Reviewed with review-loop: 1 round, 0 findings fixed, 0 declined. The fresh reviewer approved all five changed files; the loop stopped early under its approval rule.
UI evidence
Before: fresh baseline build, authenticated form with HTTP consent checked and Test disabled.
After: entered authenticated form, Test available before saving.
Successful authenticated capabilities response:
Wrong credentials:
HTTP consent denied; no request reached the endpoint:
The after images were rendered before a behavior-preserving Clippy guard simplification; full CI and the WebAssembly build passed afterward.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Test a new web-service connection before saving it using a Basic password or header API key.
Testing an HTTP address requires confirmation before credentials are sent unencrypted.
Changes
Credentials and HTTP confirmation are cleared when a test starts. Tests do not save the connection or retain its login.
Save address or login changes to an existing service connection before testing it.
Documentation
Updated the Named Connections guide with the testing flow and security requirements.
The engine adds temporary, origin-bound login probes for unsaved service connections. The UI uses a typed secret to test a new connection without including credentials in public command parameters, and retains the temporary login through response parsing. Tests and user documentation cover the workflow.

Summary
Temporary probe binding and validation crates/engine/src/service_logins.rs, crates/engine/src/tests/service_logins.rs
A temporary probe validates the unsaved connection and URL, activates an origin-bound login, and returns a guard that deactivates the binding when dropped. Engine tests cover validation, isolation, HTTP consent, and cache behavior.
UI test setup and lifecycle crates/ui-egui/src/connectionui.rs
Unsaved authenticated tests use a temporary probe and omit typed credentials from command parameters. The UI retains the probe through response parsing and clears test state when the form or project changes or the dialog closes.
Workflow tests and user guide crates/ui-egui/src/connectionui.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/service_logins/mod.rs, docs/user-guide/data.md
Tests cover authenticated unsaved probes, secret redaction, saved-login isolation, and stale results. The guide explains testing new connections and the confirmation required for HTTP credentials.

The workflow has two bounded issues: echoed credentials can appear in test status, and opening another dialog during a test can erase its error message. Address these before merging or explicitly accept the limited exposure and feedback loss.

Possible test failure on macOS/BSD (medium confidence). The listener is set non-blocking at line 186. On BSD-derived systems (macOS), an accepted socket inherits O_NONBLOCK, so the stream.read(...) call in the request loop can return WouldBlock before the client's request arrives. That unwrap() then panics the server thread and the test fails. Linux doesn't inherit the flag, so Linux CI won't catch it; the nightly macOS run would.
Suggested fix: clear the flag on the accepted stream.
Suggested change
Ok((stream, _)) => break stream,
Ok((stream, _)) => {
stream.set_nonblocking(false).unwrap();
break stream;
}
Confidence: medium (about 70%); I haven't run this on macOS.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Typed secret stays in the form when the anonymous probe fails (low severity, high confidence).clear_secrets runs only for non-temporary tests, and the temporary branch clears later. If connection.test returns Err, or the response has no fetch ("Nothing to test"), start_test returns early with the password or API key still in app.ui.connection. The PR's docs and comments say the secret is cleared "when the temporary test starts", so this contradicts them.
Nothing is sent on those paths, so the impact is limited to secret hygiene and the stated guarantee. The fix is to take a copy of the secret, and of allow_insecure, before the probe, and clear the form right after it on every service path. Alternatively, clear it in the two early-return arms when temporary is true.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance: every authenticated Test teardown wipes the whole tile cache (medium confidence).logins::deactivate calls crate::cache::clear() when it removes a binding. That function keeps only Pending slots and then clears the sources, sprites, PMTiles, MBTiles, COG and warp caches. So each time an unsaved authenticated Test is dropped, after its result, on edit, on cancel, or when a project changes, every public basemap tile in the open map is evicted and re-downloaded.
The existing saved-login revocation has the same effect, but this PR adds a new, frequent trigger. Scoping the clear to entries bound to this login, or deferring it to the next frame, would avoid it. This is a performance concern, not a correctness one. The Drop ordering and lock release are fine.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (may wait for the release quality pass): the two new messages are private consts inside temporary_probe, and this match repeats their literal text. The two copies can drift apart silently. Moving them to pub const next to the other messages in service_logins.rs would let this match use web::BAD_DEFINITION and web::BAD_ADDRESS, like the arms above it.
Prior review threads on this PR: none, so no earlier concerns were skipped.
Checked: the new temporary-probe path in service_logins.rs (validation order, origin and consent checks, guard lifetime), the connection-dialog test flow (start_test, poll, the Save path, the edit reset), the tile-logins revocation and cache-clear behaviour, and the new engine and UI tests against the PR's claims. I found no crash path, no silent data loss, and no credential leak into command parameters, history or saved connections.
Bugs
Typed secret stays in the form when the anonymous probe fails (crates/ui-egui/src/connectionui.rs:396). The early returns on probe error or missing fetch skip the temporary-path clear, so the password or key remains in the form, contrary to the docs. Nothing is sent. Low severity, high confidence.
Possible test failure on macOS/BSD (crates/ui-egui/tests/service_logins/mod.rs:198). An accepted socket inherits the listener's non-blocking flag on BSD-derived systems, so the request read can hit WouldBlock and panic. Linux CI would not catch this. Medium confidence (about 70%), not run on macOS.
Security
No findings.
Performance
Each authenticated Test teardown evicts the whole tile cache (crates/engine/src/service_logins.rs:108). logins::deactivate calls cache::clear(), which drops every ready tile, style and sprite. Every unsaved authenticated Test that ends therefore re-downloads the basemap. Medium confidence.
Quality
Duplicated message literals (crates/ui-egui/src/connectionui.rs:100). The two new translated() arms repeat text from private consts in temporary_probe. Moving them to pub const would remove the drift risk. Left for the release quality pass.
Nits, also for the release quality pass: st.id.as_ref()?; in test_blocked (connectionui.rs:352) returns None, meaning "not blocked", which is easy to misread. The poll form comparison duplicates the reset already done on field change.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. The unwrap, unreachable and panic uses are in test code only, and the wasm-gated test is correctly cfg-guarded.

Preserve the replacement dialog’s status.
If a connection test is pending when Add Delimited Text opens with a file-read error, the next poll clears that error. Clear the status only when no replacement dialog is open.
