fix(map): a streamed view applies its definition query before its feature limit - #1525
A streamed layer's view read samples the features in view down to its limit (250,000 on the desktop) and the definition query then filters that sample, so a match the sample skipped never drew (#1456). With 250,001 rows the reader keeps every second one, and the issue's only match was the second.
Now the layer's definition query goes with the view read (crates/map/src/source/window.rs):
The view is read as before. If that read holds every feature in view, the layer filters it exactly, as it did.
If the read was a sample and the source can be walked a chunk at a time (GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet, Shapefile on disk or uploaded), the source is walked instead. Each chunk is tested against the query and the view keeps up to its limit of the matches: all of them when they fit, otherwise an even sample of them, as before but now of matches. Interactive views keep the matches within half of the view's byte budget, and their projection and display levels use the rest. Exports and renders keep the row limit only.
Changing the query, through the command, the dialog, undo or a project load, reads the view again.
A query that doesn't parse leaves the view read without one, as for loaded layers. So does a query using @row_number: a row number is a row's place in the view, which a walk can't number the same way.
When the walked view is itself a sample, the Layers pane says it is a sample of the features in view matching the definition query.
Sources that can't be walked filter a sample as before: databases (PostGIS, MySQL, SQL Server), GeoJSON or LiDAR read in place, and files read by web address. A query change keeps their window, since their reads don't depend on it. layer.definitionQuery now says that the query filters each view's features, at most how many of the layer's a view reads, and that a crowded view is a sample, pointing to Load All Features. It says so when such a source holds more features than a view reads, doesn't say how many, or its view read is already a sample (a view can be thinned by bytes below the row limit), and likewise for a query using @row_number on any source (found in the parsed query, whatever its quoting).
The walk costs more than the sampled read. GeoPackage's walk scans the table rather than its spatial index, so it runs only when a view's read was a sample, not for zoomed-in views read whole. On the issue's file the export with the query takes 0.9 s. On a 2.5 million-row GeoPackage a whole-extent export takes 2.4 s without the query and 4.5 s with it.
Testing
cargo xtask ci and the wasm32-unknown-unknown build of rustgis-web.
New rustgis-map test a_streamed_view_reads_its_definition_querys_matches: a streamed layer reading 2 of 5 features gets the match its sample left out. When more features match than it reads, it gets an even sample counted as matches. A query using @row_number, or one that doesn't parse, leaves the view unfiltered. It fails without the fix.
New rustgis-engine test definition_query_on_a_streamed_layer_says_when_it_filters_a_sample: a FlatGeobuf read in place gets no notice, nor does a GeoJSON read in place holding fewer features than a view reads. A GeoJSON holding more, one whose view read is already a sample, and an @row_number query on the FlatGeobuf get it.
The issue's reproduction with rustgis-cli: 250,001 points with one rare = 1 match. Before, the streamed export was empty. After, it shows the point, as the export after Load All Features does. With 250,000 points the match showed before too.
UI evidence
The issue's streamed export (share.exportMap after layer.definitionQuery {"where":"rare = 1"}).
Definition queries on streamed layers can find matching features beyond the initially loaded sample, subject to the view’s feature limit.
Sample indicators clarify when displayed features match the definition query and report sample and match counts.
Bug Fixes
Streamed views now apply definition queries while reading, so matching features are included in results. Invalid queries leave the view unfiltered.
User Notices
When a source may show only a sample, applying a query displays a notice explaining that some matches may not appear and that Load All Features filters every feature.
…ture limit
A sampled view of a streamed source is now walked with the layer's
definition query, keeping up to the view's limit of the matches, so a
match the unfiltered sample skipped still draws (opengeos#1456). Sources that
can't be walked say that the query filters a sample.

Walkthrough
Definition queries now filter matching features during supported streamed reads, before the view limit is applied. The view tracks whether it contains sampled query matches. The layer command reports when a query may filter only a sample.

The read path parses supported queries, walks chunks to retain matches, and fits results to read and cache limits. Shared helpers handle row padding, oversized features, and cache trimming.
Store and pass layer queries crates/map/src/source.rs, crates/map/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs
SourceLayer stores the query and fields, rereads when they change, and passes the query to view reads. Layer::sync_source updates the query before polling. The view tracks whether samples contain query matches, and the tooltip identifies those samples. Tests cover matching features outside the initial sample, request limits, row-number queries, and invalid queries.
The layer command reports when a nonempty query targets a source that may only filter a sample. Tests check notice conditions for streamed FlatGeobuf and GeoJSON.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#1456] The reproduction needs a streamed GeoPackage view that filters before its limit. The diff in crates/map/src/source/window.rs adds read_mode with an optional Query. For a source that visits chunks, a sampled first read (complete == false) triggers read_filtered. That walk tests each chunk against the parsed definition query and keeps up to req.limit matches, or an even sample of them. A complete first read is returned unchanged, so the layer filters it exactly. Query changes reread the view (source.rs set_query), and sync_source sets the query before polling. This covers the issue case where the query is set before the first streamed read. A test named a_streamed_view_reads_its_definition_querys_matches covers a match outside the initial sample. The author reports that the CLI reproduction shows the point after the fix. I did not run the CLI or the tests. The result rests on the diff and the author's report. Limitation: database sources (PostGIS, MySQL, SQL Server) and non-walkable files still filter the sample. The issue names GeoPackage, so this does not leave the linked requirement unmet.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#1456] The changes support the streamed definition-query fix or its user-visible disclosure. window.rs: read_filtered, walked, numbers_rows and the Query type implement the walk. The pad, refuse_oversized, fit and trim helpers hold the interactive byte budget for the filtered path. Full filtered reads use an unlimited allowance, which the export acceptance case needs. source.rs: filtered, sampled_matches and query_sample let the view report its sample status. lib.rs: sync_sources stops restoring selection on reread, and the query is passed to the source. engine/cmd/layer.rs: definitionQuery notice when a walkable or non-walkable source is sampled. ui-egui/panes.rs: tooltip wording for sampled matches. Tests in lib.rs, tests.rs and window.rs cover the new paths. The generalization to every chunk-walkable format (FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet, Shapefile) uses the same source trait path. It does not add unrelated behavior. The walk cost for GeoPackage is a disclosed trade-off in the PR description and does not expand scope. No change was found that is unrelated to the linked issue.

Performance (medium confidence): whenever a sampled view with a definition query is read, this walks every chunk of the source inside the view extent on the source worker. Nothing in read_filtered checks whether the view has since moved, so a superseded walk runs to completion. On GeoPackage the walk scans the table (per the PR body), so each pan or zoom outside the current window can cost a full scan of a large table. The sampled first read at line 76 is also thrown away whenever the walk runs, so those views pay for two reads.
The PR measures only the export (0.9 s). It would help to record interactive pan and zoom timings on a large GeoPackage with a query, and to say whether the walk can be cancelled or debounced.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Measured on a 2.5 million-row GeoPackage (the issue's layout, one rare = 1 match), with a whole-extent streamed export from the CLI: 2.4 s without the query, 4.5 s with it. So the walk adds about 2 s at that size. It runs only when the view's first read came back as a sample: views that are read whole (most zoomed-in views) are filtered as before, with no walk.
Walks don't pile up while panning. SourceLayer::wanted starts no read while one is pending, so a layer has one read in flight and the next frame asks for wherever the view has gone. The first read is what tells us whether a walk is needed; skipping it would walk every view, including the ones that fit. Cancelling a superseded walk would need a cancellation path through visit_chunks for every provider, which is beyond this fix.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Silent-loss gap (low-medium confidence):filters_while_reading() returns None until the source's handle is open (source.rs:885). With == Some(false), a query set while the handle is still None, for example a web-address source still opening, gets no notice. That source can then filter a sample of crowded views for the rest of the session with nothing said. The check also can't be flipped to != Some(true) as-is, because it would fire for loaded layers without a source. Consider notifying when the source exists and its walkability is unknown, or deferring the notice until the handle opens.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The notice reports what can be known when the query is set: a source that's open, can't be walked, and holds more features than a view reads (or doesn't say how many). A source still opening, or a query that comes from a project or an undo, never goes through this command. Those views are still reported where they happen: the Layers pane says "a sample of n of the m features in view (zoom in to see them all)" for any streamed view that is a sample, whatever set the query. Reporting each sampled read itself would need a route from the render path's reads to the session's notices, which doesn't exist yet. That's a change of its own, not part of this fix.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
AGENTS.md, "Test both ways" (medium confidence): the notice fires for any non-walkable source, whatever its size. The new test (engine/src/tests.rs:21947) asserts that a one-feature GeoJSON gets it, but no view of a one-feature layer can be crowded, so clean input gets a notice that can't apply. The notice should only fire when a view can actually hold more features than it reads. Gating on the source's known count against the view limit would fix this. The test would then need a GeoJSON large enough to exceed the limit, or a lower limit set on the source.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed. Fixed in 6e1e72a: the notice now needs the source to hold more features than a view reads, or not to say how many (SourceLayer::query_filters_a_sample). The test now covers both ways: a GeoJSON read in place with fewer features than the view reads gets no notice, and one with more gets it.
I did not run cargo here (no shell), so the build, clippy and tests are unverified. The findings come from reading the diff and the surrounding source. Prior review threads: none, so no concerns were skipped.
Bugs
None confirmed. I traced the sampling logic in read_filtered (the stride doubling, the complete flag, matched, and the parse-failure fallback) and found it consistent.
Security
None found. The query text goes through the existing parser, and the new code has no indexing or unwrap in non-test paths.
Performance
A sampled view with a definition query now walks every chunk of its extent on the source worker (window.rs:81). Superseded walks are not cancelled, and each pan or zoom outside the current window can repeat the walk. On GeoPackage the walk scans the whole table, per the PR body. The sampled first read (window.rs:76) is discarded when the walk runs, so those views read twice. Confidence: medium. The PR only measures the export (0.9 s), not interactive pans.
Quality
source.rs:1028 clones the whole Query, including its Vec<Field>, on every read. This is minor. Confidence: high, low impact.
engine/src/tests.rs:21947 builds a temp directory and removes it only at the end, so a failed assertion leaks it. Confidence: high, low impact.
AGENTS.md
Clean input gets a notice. The notice (layer.rs:509) fires for any non-walkable source, whatever its size, and the new test asserts it for a one-feature GeoJSON where no view can be crowded. This goes against "clean input none". Confidence: medium.
Silent-loss gap: filters_while_reading() returns None until the handle opens, so a query set during opening gets no notice (layer.rs:504). Confidence: low-medium.
Engine notices use format! without tl!, but the engine crate has no tl! calls at all, so this is the existing convention and not a violation.

… a query can't change
The Layers pane says a walked view's sample counts the features matching
the definition query. A query using @row_number keeps the view read
without it. Changing the query keeps the window of a source that can't
be walked. The sampling notice only applies to a source holding more
features than a view reads.

Silent sampling gap (medium confidence). This gate compares the source's total feature count with the row limit, but a view is also capped by bytes: budget() is VIEW_BYTES / sources, and read_with_fields / pad / trim thin the rows and set complete = false when they exceed it. So a non-walkable source with fewer features than most can still be sampled, and nothing is said.
Failure scenario: a streamed 120,000-feature GeoJSON of building footprints, about 1.5 KB each (about 180 MB). count is 120,000, which is under VIEW_LIMIT (250,000), so this returns false and no notice is given. The view keeps a byte-limited sample, and layer.definitionQuery then filters only that sample, so matches go missing silently.
This is separate from the earlier count-gating thread. That one asked the notice to stop firing for small sources, and the count check does that. What's missing is the byte limit. Possible fixes: also notify when the rows' estimated size times the count exceeds the budget, or record on each sampled non-walkable read that its query was applied to a sample and say so then.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed: a view can be thinned by bytes below the row limit. Fixed in 479ddda. The notice now also fires when the view already read is a sample, whatever the source's count (SourceLayer::query_filters_a_sample). In the app a layer has normally been drawn before a query is set, so this covers the footprints case. A query set before any read still gets the Layers pane's "a sample of n of the m features in view" once its view is read. The engine test covers a GeoJSON whose count fits the row limit but whose view read was a sample.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
New failure path in the walk (low-medium confidence). The walk can now reach a feature that the sampled read never included. read_filtered keeps a single match even when it's larger than the budget, and fit then calls refuse_oversized(&batch, bytes)?, so the whole window fails. read_mode returns the error, sync_source calls install(Vec::new()), and the view draws nothing.
Failure scenario: a streamed layer with 16 MB of view budget (several streamed layers), where one matching polygon is about 20 MB and the sample never reached it. Before this PR the view drew the other features. Now the whole view is blank.
Suggested fix: in the interactive walk, skip a matching feature that alone exceeds bytes and say so through the notice path, instead of failing every feature in view. Add a regression test with an oversized match outside the sample.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
That refusal isn't new to the walk. The unfiltered view read applies the same refuse_oversized and trim limits, and fails the same way whenever its sample reaches a feature larger than the view's budget ("one feature exceeds the view memory budget; load it explicitly for full processing"). The error is kept on the source and shown in the Layers pane, so nothing is lost silently. Leaving the oversized match out of the walk would draw the others but quietly drop a feature the query keeps, which the never-silent rule doesn't allow. Load All Features still reads it.
The walk itself looks sound: visit_chunks honours the extent and matches a complete read, eval reads attributes through get(), and a query change does reset in-flight reads through reset_window. Two new findings are posted inline. I couldn't run the build or tests here (no shell), so compilation and test results are not verified.
Bugs
Silent sampling gap for non-walkable sources (crates/map/src/source.rs:892). The notice gate compares total count with the row limit and ignores the byte budget, so a sampled view can go unannounced. Confidence: medium.
Oversized match fails the whole view (crates/map/src/source/window.rs:197). A matching feature larger than the view budget, which the sample never reached, makes fit error and blanks the view. Confidence: low-medium.
Security
None found. Query text and fields from project files go through parse, which returns errors instead of panicking, and eval is panic-safe.
Performance
Already raised: the walk runs on every window change, and the sampled first read is discarded. Left alone.
Quality
Nit: panes.rs:1974 passes a variable to i18n::fmt. Catalog extraction that keys on literals would miss the two new strings. Confidence: low.
Nit: the map test doesn't exercise the interactive half-budget path or the fit thinning. Confidence: medium. Left for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
"Never silent", low confidence: a @row_number query on a walkable source still filters a sample of a crowded view with no notice, because query_filters_a_sample returns false for walkable sources. The PR body treats row numbers as deliberate, so this may be an accepted design choice.
Checked and fine: no unwrap in non-test code, no unsafe, line lengths within the 140-column rustfmt limit, and too_many_arguments is allowed workspace-wide.
Earlier threads: 5 open concerns left alone (the GeoPackage walk cost, the discarded sample read, the count-gating notice, the handle-not-yet-open silent gap, and the row-number point, which the code now addresses). 2 resolved threads were not re-raised.

…ses a row number
The sampling notice also covers a view already read as a sample (one
thinned by bytes below the row limit) and a query using @row_number,
which no view is walked with (a text holding the words doesn't count).

AGENTS.md, translatable text (low confidence, about 35%): the two Layers-pane sentences are now bound to sample and passed to i18n::fmt as a variable. Before, each was a literal argument to fmt. If the release extraction of the catalogs keys on literal fmt("…") calls, the sentence is not extracted and stays English. Runtime lookup still works. The extraction tool isn't in this repo, so I couldn't confirm it. The safe shape keeps each literal at its call site, for example one fmt call per branch.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 9ef2bf4: each Layers-pane sentence is again a literal at its own i18n::fmt call. Lookup happens at runtime either way, but this keeps them easy to find for the catalogs.

AGENTS.md, "never silent" (medium-low confidence, about 45%): the rule asks a notice to say what, how much and where. This one names the layer and the cause but not how much may be missing. The source's count and the view limit are both known at this point (SourceLayer::query_filters_a_sample has them), so the message could say, for example, "the source holds {count} features and a view reads up to {limit}". Where the count is unknown, it could say so.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 9ef2bf4: the notice now says how much, for example "Sites: the query filters the features each view reads (at most 250000 of the layer's 400000 features), a sample where a view holds more, so some matches may not show (Load All Features filters every one)". It says "an unknown number of" when the source doesn't give a count. The engine test checks the numbers.
I found no bugs or crash paths in the changed code. I checked the chunk walk's sampling arithmetic (halving keeps an even spread, and complete is set correctly), the @row_number and quoted-text handling in walks(), the consistency of eval with the layer's own filter (both use a default Env), trim clearing complete when it thins, and the MSRV (1.90 covers is_multiple_of and is_none_or).
Bugs: none new.
Security: none found.
Performance: none new. The walk-per-pan cost is already raised in an unresolved thread.
Quality:
The engine test removes its temp directory only after the assertions, so a failed assertion leaves it behind. Minor; a drop guard would fix it. (high confidence, nit)
The walks() check is a substring match on @row_number, so an identifier like @row_numbers takes the conservative non-walk path. Harmless. (high confidence, nit)
AGENTS.md:
Translatable text: the Layers-pane sentences are now passed to i18n::fmt as a variable. If catalog extraction keys on literal fmt("…") calls, they won't be extracted. Inline comment on crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs:1974. (about 35%)
Never silent: the definition-query notice doesn't say how many features may be missing. Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:512. (about 45%)
Already raised, left alone (10 earlier threads): I did not repeat any of them. Four are still open:
the walk's per-pan cost, unresolved (window.rs:83)
a single oversized match failing the whole window, unresolved and disputed by the author (window.rs:218)
the notice for sources still opening, outdated and answered (layer.rs:504)
the byte-limit gap, outdated and fixed in 479ddda (source.rs:892)
The other six are resolved or withdrawn.

…le may hold
A row number is now found in the parsed query, whatever its quoting.
The sampling notice says the most a view reads of the layer's
features. The Layers pane's sample sentences are literals at their
translation calls again.

Bug (high confidence): when the source doesn't say how many features it holds, the notice reads "(at most 250000 of the layer's an unknown number of features)". The phrase "the layer's {count} features" is built around a number, so the word-substitution produces a broken sentence. The unknown-count branch has no test either, since the test only covers 2 features.
Suggested fix: build the whole phrase for each case.
Suggested change
letcount = count.map_or_else(|| "an unknown number of".to_string(), |c| c.to_string());
lettotal = count.map_or_else(|| "the layer's features (their number unknown)".to_string(), |c| format!("the layer's {c} features"));
s.notify(
format!(
"{name}: the query filters the features each view reads (at most {most} of {total}), a sample where a view holds more, so some matches may not show (Load All Features filters every one)"
),
false,
);
This also needs the count binding removed from the line above, which the suggestion replaces. A test for a source with an unknown count would cover the other branch.

Fixed in a2d30f9: without a count the notice now reads "(at most 250000 features; the layer doesn't say how many it holds)", and with one "(at most 250000 of the layer's 400000 features)".
crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs:510 (high confidence, about 95%): when the source doesn't report its feature count, the notice reads "(at most 250000 of the layer's an unknown number of features)". The phrase is built around a number. The unknown-count branch has no test. Inline comment posted with a suggestion. The suggestion replaces only line 510, so applying it alone would leave the s.notify below referencing the removed count. The whole count line and the notify block need replacing together.
No other defects found in the changed lines. I checked:
The new numbers_rows match covers all 19 Expr variants.
Dataset::value uses get(), so the walk can't panic on short attribute rows.
The walk's sample-halving arithmetic keeps complete and matched consistent.
reread() drops pending, so a stale walk's result is discarded.
Remote FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet are excluded from visits_chunks.
The too_many_arguments lint is allowed workspace-wide.
I did not compile or run the tests. I have no shell here, so the compile and test status is unverified; everything above comes from reading the code.
Security
None found. The new parsing and walk run on bounded chunks, with no new input surface.
Performance
Already raised in the earlier thread on window.rs (the walk on every sampled view, with no cancellation). The author answered it. Left alone.
Quality
Nit: the engine test in crates/engine/src/tests.rs removes its temp directory only on success. An assertion failure leaves the directory behind. Left for the release quality pass.
Nit: the notice's unknown-count branch (see Bugs) is untested.
AGENTS.md
Compliant on the points checked: no unwrap() in non-test code, Session::notify is used for the notice, and the Layers-pane literals sit at their i18n::fmt call sites.
Prior review threads
13 threads on the PR. I left 12 alone: the open ones the author answered, and the resolved ones. The layer.rs:512 "how much may be missing" concern is largely answered by the current message, which includes the count and the view limit; the remaining gap is the unknown-count wording above.

Browser: the walk blocks the UI thread (medium confidence).SourceLayer::start only spawns a thread under #[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))] and otherwise calls job() synchronously (crates/map/src/source.rs:1081-1106). So in the web app, read_filtered runs inside the frame. A browser GeoPackage (gpkg_mem, which reports visits_chunks() == true) gets a full-table scan on every sampled view that needs a query walk, so each pan or zoom out of the current window freezes the page for as long as the scan takes. The 2.4 s / 4.5 s figures in the PR are desktop timings on the source worker; in the browser they would be stalls, not background work.
Options: skip the walk on wasm and say so through the existing Layers-pane sample message, run it through the async path the remote reads use, or measure a browser-sized GeoPackage and document the cost. Worth a decision before merge.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
In the browser every local view read already runs in the frame, by design: today's sampled read decodes up to 100,000 features of an uploaded GeoPackage synchronously, and the walk follows the same path. So the walk adds the scan's cost to a cost the browser already pays, and only for a view whose read was a sample while a query is set. Skipping the walk on wasm would bring back the silently wrong results this issue is about. Moving local reads off the frame (as remote reads are) is a change to the browser's read path in its own right, beyond this fix. Removing the query brings back the old cost, and Load All Features filters an uploaded layer in memory once.

Re-raising the oversized-match concern, with a point the earlier reply doesn't cover (low-medium confidence). The reply says the unfiltered read fails the same way when its sample reaches an oversized feature. That is true, but the walk reaches every match in the view, not only the sample. So a view that drew before (its sample missed the oversized match, and the query filtered that sample) now gets refuse_oversized from fit and draws nothing whenever a walk keeps that match. The error does show in Layers, so nothing is silent. It is still a regression for a view that used to draw.
Trade-off to decide: dropping such matches from the walk needs a notice, since the never-silent rule applies. Alternatively, keep the error but only when the oversized match is in the unfiltered sample. Either way, a test with an oversized match outside the sample would pin the behaviour.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Right: a walk can now reach an oversized match that the sample happened to miss. It takes a single matching feature larger than the whole view budget (128 MiB shared among the map's streamed layers). When it happens the view says so in the Layers pane rather than drawing a partial answer, and Load All Features reads it. Dropping that match instead would need its own notice from the read worker, which has no route to the session's notices today (see the thread on reporting sampled reads). Keeping the error only when the sample reaches it would make the outcome depend on which rows the sample picked. I'd rather keep the refusal predictable.
I checked the walk logic, the @row_number detection, the query-change reread path and the notice gating. The core logic holds up. I found two new concerns (posted inline) and a few nits, and I left the rest alone because earlier threads already raise them.
Bugs
Browser walk blocks the UI thread (medium confidence). In the web app SourceLayer::start runs the read synchronously, so a GeoPackage walk becomes a frame stall on every pan out of the window. Posted inline at crates/map/src/source/window.rs:77.
Walk can fail a whole view on an oversized match (low-medium confidence). This is a re-raise of the earlier thread. The author's reply covers the unfiltered read only. The walk reaches every match in view, so a view that drew before can now draw nothing. Posted inline at crates/map/src/source/window.rs:223.
Security
None found. Query parsing is depth-bounded (MAX_DEPTH), and the new code has no unchecked indexing or unwraps outside tests.
Performance
Already raised and answered: the walk on every sampled pan (window.rs:77 thread), and the first read being discarded (answered with measurements). Not repeated.
Minor: set_query rereads the view whenever the query text changes, including queries whose read does not depend on the query (@row_number, unparseable). Harmless but wasteful.
Quality
start() (source.rs:1037) and query_sample (source.rs:892) each compute the view limit (REMOTE_VIEW_LIMIT / VIEW_LIMIT / explicit limit). Extracting one helper would keep them in sync.
The walk path has no test for a non-walkable source keeping its window across a query change (the rule added in 6e1e72a).
The engine test writes into a fixed temp directory and only removes it on success.
AGENTS.md
Never-crash, never-silent and wasm rules hold: the new notices go through s.notify, and the engine notices are plain English like the other engine notices. The tests cover both the lossy and the clean case.
Docs gap, low confidence: docs/user-guide/data.md (around lines 905 and 971) still describes the streamed sample without saying a definition query now filters matches in a walked view. Not required by AGENTS.md.
The i18n concern about literal fmt calls is addressed (9ef2bf4).
Already raised (left alone)
I left 11 earlier concerns alone, because the author answered them and I had no new evidence: the walk cost on pan, the first-read cost, the unknown-count message (fixed), the row-number and quoting handling, the byte-limited notice gap, the count-gated notice, the source-still-opening notice gap, the i18n literals, the notice wording, and the window-preservation for non-walkable sources.

Summary
A streamed layer's view read samples the features in view down to its limit (250,000 on the desktop) and the definition query then filters that sample, so a match the sample skipped never drew (#1456). With 250,001 rows the reader keeps every second one, and the issue's only match was the second.
Now the layer's definition query goes with the view read (
crates/map/src/source/window.rs):@row_number: a row number is a row's place in the view, which a walk can't number the same way.Sources that can't be walked filter a sample as before: databases (PostGIS, MySQL, SQL Server), GeoJSON or LiDAR read in place, and files read by web address. A query change keeps their window, since their reads don't depend on it.
layer.definitionQuerynow says that the query filters each view's features, at most how many of the layer's a view reads, and that a crowded view is a sample, pointing to Load All Features. It says so when such a source holds more features than a view reads, doesn't say how many, or its view read is already a sample (a view can be thinned by bytes below the row limit), and likewise for a query using@row_numberon any source (found in the parsed query, whatever its quoting).
Testing
cargo xtask ciand thewasm32-unknown-unknownbuild ofrustgis-web.rustgis-maptesta_streamed_view_reads_its_definition_querys_matches: a streamed layer reading 2 of 5 features gets the match its sample left out. When more features match than it reads, it gets an even sample counted as matches. A query using@row_number, or one that doesn't parse, leaves the view unfiltered. It fails without the fix.rustgis-enginetestdefinition_query_on_a_streamed_layer_says_when_it_filters_a_sample: a FlatGeobuf read in place gets no notice, nor does a GeoJSON read in place holding fewer features than a view reads.
