fix(data): refuse a GeoParquet dictionary page that claims more values than it holds - #1527
The nightly fuzz run found a 9 KB GeoParquet file that made the reader try to allocate 34.6 GB. The file's dictionary page header claimed about 1.08 billion values for a page holding 300 bytes. The parquet crate's DictDecoder::set_dict resizes the dictionary to the header's count before decoding anything, so the count alone sets the allocation. The same code is still on arrow-rs main (60.1.0).
The reader now wraps each column's page reader. A dictionary page is refused when its count can't fit in its bytes: plain encoding needs at least 1 bit per boolean, 4 bytes per BYTE_ARRAY (the length prefix), and the type's width for everything else. The read fails with GeoParquet: … a dictionary page says it holds 1082196492 values, more than its 300 bytes can. All four places that open a column reader go through the check: attributes, geometry, the bbox covering and vector lists.
Testing
geoparquet_refuses_dictionary_counts_its_page_cannot_hold writes a GeoParquet file, sets the last column chunk's dictionary count to two billion and checks that the read is an error. Without the guard the test aborts with memory allocation of 64000000000 bytes failed.
The fuzz input from the run now reads as the error above.
Parquet data with dictionary pages that declare more values than the page can hold is now rejected with an error, rather than being processed as valid input.
Added regression coverage confirming that valid GeoParquet files remain readable and malformed dictionary-page counts produce an error.
…s than it holds
The parquet crate's DictDecoder::set_dict sizes the dictionary from the
page header's count before decoding, so a few header bytes could ask for
tens of gigabytes (fuzzing found 34.6 GB from a 9 KB file). Each column's
page reader is now wrapped to refuse a dictionary page whose count its
plain-encoded bytes can't hold.

Parquet column reads now validate dictionary-page value counts against page-buffer capacity. Value, byte, floating-point, and list readers use the checked page reader. A regression test confirms that an excessive declared count causes read_layers to return an error.
A new CheckedPages wrapper rejects dictionary pages when the declared value count, multiplied by the column’s minimum bits per value, exceeds the page buffer’s bit capacity.
Reader integration and regression test crates/data/src/source/parquet.rs, crates/data/src/source/tests.rs
Value, byte, floating-point, and list readers use the checked reader. The regression test confirms that a patched dictionary-page count is rejected and that the original file remains readable.
The dictionary-count safeguard covers the identified reader paths. Additional non-geometry regression tests would improve protection against future regressions, but no concrete merge-blocking defect remains.

Explanation
[#1498] CheckedPages guards column dictionary counts, and the new test covers an inflated count. The issue also requires the failing fuzz input as a regression test. The test generates a different file with a count of 2,000,000,000; it does not run the reported input with a count of 1,082,196,492.
Resolution
Add the reported fuzz input as an automated regression test, following fuzz/README.md.

Quality (low confidence, edge case):.max(1) * 8 treats a zero-length FIXED_LEN_BYTE_ARRAY as 8 bits per value. A zero-width value takes 0 bytes, so a dictionary of any size with an empty buffer would be refused. Such a file is probably invalid per the spec, so this is only a false refusal on an edge case. If you want to keep the guard exact, use type_length * 8 with a 0 lower bound (num_values > 0 is then never refused) rather than .max(1).

Keeping .max(1). With a 0 lower bound a zero-width column would accept any count from an empty buffer, and the dictionary decoder still makes a 32-byte slot per claimed value, so a header saying two billion would allocate 64 GB again: the crash this PR fixes. A FIXED_LEN_BYTE_ARRAY of length 0 holds nothing, so refusing a non-empty dictionary for one loses no real file.

Quality (nit, AGENTS "says where"): the error names the count and the bytes but not the column, and the CheckedPages type doesn't know its column. A user with several GeoParquet columns can't tell which one is bad. Consider storing desc.name() (or the column index) in CheckedPages and naming it in the message. This is an error path, so it's not a silent-loss bug.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit, test robustness): the marker search runs from the page start to the end of the file, not just the page header. The first match is in the header today, but the test would silently patch the wrong bytes if the header layout changed. The patch also assumes that the geometry chunk is the last thing before the footer: original[end..start + compressed_size] drops everything after the chunk. The comment says "no other chunk moves" but doesn't state that assumption. Consider a .take(header_len) window and a sentence stating the layout assumption. Per AGENTS this can wait for the release quality pass.

A wrong patch wouldn't pass silently: the test ends by asserting the exact message for two billion values, so any other bytes patched fail it. Bounding the search to the header and stating the last-chunk assumption are left for the release quality pass.
I checked the guard's logic against the four read paths (read_values, read_bytes, read_f64, read_lists) and the new test's byte patching. I found no bugs, crash paths, or silent data loss, and no AGENTS.md violations. The PR is sound. I did not build or run the tests, since I only had read access.
Bugs
None found. The per-type lower bounds are correct for PLAIN dictionary pages: 1 bit per BOOLEAN, 32 for INT32/FLOAT/BYTE_ARRAY (the length prefix), 64 for INT64/DOUBLE, 96 for INT96, and type width for FLBA. The saturating_mul calls prevent overflow. Dictionary pages are checked after decompression, so buf.len() is the uncompressed size. The guard covers all four column-reader call sites, and the RemoteFile path goes through the same helper. Confidence: high.
Security
None found. The check runs before the parquet crate allocates. Confidence: high.
Performance
None. The wrapper adds one indirection per page. Confidence: high.
Quality
FLBA .max(1) (low confidence, edge case): a zero-length FIXED_LEN_BYTE_ARRAY is treated as 8 bits per value, so a dictionary with values and an empty buffer is refused. Such a file is probably invalid per the spec. Inline comment posted.
Error lacks the column name (nit, medium confidence): AGENTS.md asks that reports say "where". This is an error path, not silent loss. Inline comment posted.
Test robustness (nit): the marker search runs to the end of the file rather than the header, and the patch assumes the geometry chunk is last before the footer. Inline comment posted. This can wait for the release quality pass.
Open question (low confidence): the guard covers only dictionary pages. I could not check whether data-page num_values can drive a similar pre-allocation in parquet 60. The PR should say whether it does.
AGENTS.md
The change is in L1 with no layering or wasm concerns. It includes a regression test and a clean-input check. Error handling follows the "unusable results are errors" rule. Confidence: high.
Earlier concerns: there were no prior review threads, so none were skipped.

reader returns the checked-page error, so the tests verify these paths remain
protected even if geometry reading no longer uses column_reader.
