fix(ui): the browser's layout page is drawn again as its map frames' tiles land - #1535
In the browser, which can't wait for tiles, a layout page was drawn once with what had arrived and not again: a map frame showing another zoom or area than the map view stayed cut off until something on the page changed. The page now notices it was drawn short and draws again as the tiles land.
layout::render_pending is layout::render that also says whether a map frame drew while some of its tiles were on their way (Rendered.tiles_pending, carried through draw_page and frame_canvas). render and the other callers are unchanged.
The layout view's legends_wait becomes page_wait: when the page drew short of tiles, a change in the tile cache's generation draws it again, at most every 0.25 s; when only legend pictures were missing, fix(layout): the browser's layout page is drawn again once its legend pictures land, not on every fetch #1177's rule holds (drawn again once they have all landed, not on every fetch). With nothing missing, other fetches don't draw it again.
Browser only, behind the same cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32") as before: the desktop page already waits for its tiles.
A frame drawn short of a streamed read counts too: a source opened by its address, or a raster reloaded or opened in place, lands through source::wake() rather than the tile cache, so the page watches both generations (landings()).
Testing
cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo nextest run --workspace (DuckDB tests skipped: DuckDB isn't installed on this machine), doc tests, cargo xtask layers and hostile_params_never_panic: all pass.
a_layout_page_drawn_short_of_its_frames_tiles_says_so: a page whose frame's tiles are held, with the native wait skipped as the browser skips it, reports itself drawn short; once they land, it doesn't.
Manual, trunk serve: a layout whose frame showed a wider area than the map view filled by itself within seconds, with OpenStreetMap tiles and with a vector-style basemap; a complete page didn't flicker while the map view fetched; WMS legend pictures still appear; the desktop layout is unchanged. The streamed-read case is covered by its test only: it wasn't tried in the browser.
UI evidence
In the web app, a layout frame whose tiles weren't cached now fills by itself as they land, instead of staying cut off until the page changes.
Browser map layouts now refresh as tiles load or streamed map data becomes available, allowing rendered content to appear while other content is still pending.
Redraws for pending map content are spaced at least a quarter-second apart to avoid refreshing too frequently.
Pages waiting on legend images refresh once those images are ready.

Walkthrough
Page rendering now reports whether map-frame tiles or streamed reads are pending. The browser layout view tracks those states and legend-picture waits, then schedules redraws based on generation changes, elapsed time, and legend status.
Changes: Pending redraw handling

Summary
Propagate map-frame pending status crates/render/src/layout.rs
render_pending returns the rendered page and whether map-frame tiles or reads were pending. Existing rendering APIs retain their return values.
LayoutView tracks tile-cache and source-read generations. Frame waits require a generation change and a 0.25-second delay. Legend-only waits require no pending legend pictures. Tests cover these redraw conditions.
opengeos/RustGIS#1177: This PR added the browser redraw rule for pending legend pictures, which this change retains for legend-only waits.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the browser layout page is redrawn as map-frame tiles arrive. It matches the raw summary, the objectives, and the linked issue #1534. The title uses the conventional fix(ui) prefix and is one sentence of 14 words.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1534 requires that, in the web app, a layout map frame fills as its uncached tiles land. It requires no page change. Desktop behavior must not change. The issue has no non-coding requirements.
Implementation at the reviewed head:
crates/render/src/layout.rs: render_pending returns the page pixmap and a flag. The flag is set in frame_canvas from Rendered.tiles_pending || Rendered.data_pending. Both fields already exist in crates/render/src/lib.rs at the base. render delegates to render_pending and discards the flag.
crates/ui-egui/src/layoutview.rs: PageWait stores the landings() pair, the frame-wait flag, and the draw time. landings() reads the tile cache generation and rustgis_engine::map::source::generation(). redraw_due redraws when landed changes and at least FRAMES_REDRAW_S (0.25 s) has passed. page_wait is set only when cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32") holds. Native builds keep page_wait as None.
Legend-only waits keep the #1177 rule. They redraw only after the legend pictures have all landed.
The tile path is the one the issue describes. Its wiring from render_complete to redraw is complete within the diff.
Tests: three unit tests cover redraw_due for tile timing, streamed reads, and the legend rule. They do not run the browser path end to end. The manual browser results in the PR description are author-reported and were not reproduced.
Uncertainty: the definition of rustgis_engine::map::source::generation was not inspected. It is not in the changed files shown in the diff. The tile requirement does not depend on it.
Note: while page_wait is set, the view requests a repaint every 250 ms. A tile that never arrives keeps the wait active. This affects cost, not the stated requirement.

Explanation
The diff changes crates/render/src/layout.rs and crates/ui-egui/src/layoutview.rs. All changes serve the tile-driven page redraw for #1534.
render_pending and the pending flag through draw_page and frame_canvas. Other callers pass &mut false or ignore the result, so their behavior is unchanged.
PageWait, redraw_due, landings(), and FRAMES_REDRAW_S. These replace legends_wait and keep the #1177 legend rule.
Three unit tests for redraw_due.
The current head adds the data_pending flag and the source-read generation. These extend the same redraw to raster layers read in place and streamed layers (#1339). The issue reports a frame drawn short and not redrawn. These reads cause the same symptom, so the extension supports the same objective. It is not an unrelated change. No refactoring or documentation changes unrelated to the objective appear in the diff.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the required template sections. Summary explains the bug (browser layout page drawn short of map-frame tiles and not redrawn), the approach (render_pending returns a tiles_pending flag, and the layout view redraws on tile-cache or streamed-read generation changes at most every 0.25 s), and the scope (browser only, desktop unchanged). Testing lists the commands run, new redraw_due tests, and manual trunk serve checks, and notes that the streamed-read case was covered only by its test. UI evidence has BEFORE and AFTER screenshots, which the template requires for a visible UI change. Related issue is Closes #1534. The template's 'No visible UI change.' line does not apply here, so the screenshots are the correct choice. The description is complete and specific.

I found no confirmed bugs. The core change holds up: render_pending reports tiles_pending through draw_page and frame_canvas, raster layers read in place are counted (tile_out.pending |= pending), and redraw_due gives the throttle and legend rules the behaviour the PR describes. Native behaviour is unchanged because every new flag is gated on web.
Bugs
None confirmed.
Security

Performance
Redraw rate under unrelated fetches (low confidence): while tiles is set, the page redraws each time the global tile-cache generation changes, at most every 0.25 s. Other panes or maps fetching tiles keep bumping that generation, so the whole layout re-renders about four times a second for as long as they run. The throttle bounds this, but a cheaper check would be to compare only this page's frames' tile keys.
Per-frame generation read (very low):cache::generation() is now read on every frame of the layout view (layoutview.rs:642), where it used to be read only when a wait was pending. It is cheap, so this is only a note.
Quality
No issues beyond the tests below.
Tests cover redraw_due only. Nothing checks that render_pending reports tiles_pending for a frame with missing tiles. Native rendering waits for tiles, so the browser path is hard to unit-test. This is a test-coverage point for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
Missing screenshots (medium confidence): the PR body says "Before and after screenshots to follow". AGENTS.md requires before and after screenshots for changed UI in the PR, so this should be added before merge.
Everything else I checked complies: no unwrap, expect or panic outside tests; web_time is not needed because the code uses egui's time; no user-visible strings were added; there is no layering or asset change. too_many_arguments is allowed workspace-wide (Cargo.toml:120), so the eight-argument draw_page is fine.

Bugs: None confirmed. I checked the wasm paths the earlier data_pending thread raised. Streamed reads that run in the background call source::wake() on completion, which bumps source::generation(). Reads that finish synchronously on wasm are already polled within the same call, so data_pending is false when they return. The generation counters the view reads are the ones the producers bump. Nothing is inconsistent.
Security: None found.
Performance:
Re-raised, changed code (medium confidence, not measured in the browser): landings() is app-global. While a page is short, any tile landing anywhere (another map, the basemap, unrelated streamed reads) redraws the whole layout, up to 4 times a second. This is an extension of the earlier "unrelated fetches" thread. Inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/src/layoutview.rs:649.
Minor (low confidence): legends_pending is computed on every web draw, including when frames is already true and the result is unused. Included in the same inline comment.
Quality:
Test coverage (medium confidence): the redraw_due tests cover the pure rule, but nothing covers the wiring that sets pending in frame_canvas. Dropping that line would leave every new test passing. Inline comment posted at crates/render/src/layout.rs:450.
AGENTS.md: No violations found in the changed lines. There are no new unwrap, expect or panic calls in non-test code, no user-visible strings that need tl!, no std::time::Instant (the Duration use predates this PR), and no layering breaks. The screenshots are attached to the PR body, as the guidelines require for visible changes.
Earlier concerns left alone (4):
The 250 ms repaint polling while a page is pending (open thread at layoutview.rs around line 673, unchanged and unanswered).
The data_pending gap (outdated; the PR now handles it, as checked above).
The unrelated-fetch redraw thread (outdated; re-raised above because the code changed and the problem remains).
A second thread on that same redraw, which is covered by the re-raise above.

Nit (test code, no bug today): in for done in std::mem::take(&mut *HELD.lock().unwrap()), the temporary MutexGuard lives until the end of the for loop, so HELD stays locked while every done(...) callback runs. Nothing in the callback path re-enters the held/ fetcher, so this doesn't deadlock now, but taking the list first makes the lock's scope obvious and removes the risk if a callback ever starts another held fetch:
Suggested change
for done in std::mem::take(&mut*HELD.lock().unwrap()){
let held = std::mem::take(&mut*HELD.lock().unwrap());
for done in held {
Confidence: high that it is harmless as written; low that it matters. Left for the release quality pass if you'd rather not change it in this PR.
I found no bugs, crash paths, security issues, or AGENTS.md violations in the changed code. I posted one low-stakes nit inline (crates/render/src/tiles.rs:1454).
Bugs
None found. I checked the new render_pending wiring, the page_wait redraw rule, and the generation ordering it depends on:
Tile results are stored before the tile-cache generation is bumped (cache.rs completion path). A page snapshot taken before a draw therefore can't miss a landing that the draw also missed. Confidence: high.
source::generation() is bumped by wake(), which the page now watches alongside the tile generation. Confidence: high.
Desktop behaviour is unchanged: frames and legends are both gated on cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32"). Confidence: high.
The held-tile test is sound. The fetcher runs synchronously during the first draw, and HOLD is cleared before the held list is taken. Confidence: medium-high, since I could not run the test.
Security
None found.
Performance
Nothing new beyond the earlier threads listed below.
Quality
tiles.rs:1454 (nit, low confidence it matters): the for loop over std::mem::take(&mut *HELD.lock()…) keeps HELD locked for the whole loop. This is harmless today. Posted as an inline comment with a suggestion.
render/src/layout.rs: render_element, record_element and render_drawing pass &mut false, so they discard the pending flag. This looks intentional, but a one-line comment would make that explicit. Confidence: medium.
AGENTS.md
No violations found. too_many_arguments is allowed workspace-wide, so the 8-argument draw_page is fine. Test code may use unwrap and panic. No new user-visible strings were added. The before/after screenshots are linked by URL, as AGENTS.md requires.
Earlier concerns left alone
I left 5 earlier threads alone:
Two concern the app-global redraw cost. The author accepted both, and this PR does not change that trade-off.
The 250 ms repaint. It was already resolved in-thread.
The data_pending gap. It was fixed in f613e764 and the current code watches the source generation.
The legends_pending call on every draw. It was fixed in 36a02936, and the current code computes it only when frames aren't being waited for.
The missing wiring test for layout.rs:450. This PR's new a_layout_page_drawn_short… test now covers it.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 183ccdd to PR head 36a0293).
