What

The assistant picks one of four fixed, parameterised questions (total received, orders by state, refunds, review backlog) and typed dates; it never writes SQL. The answer shows the numbers used. Injection text maps to none. Cross-cutting: the store's read pool now sets query_only at the connection, so a write through it fails (tests show nothing relied on writing through it). Dates are validated, windows capped at 366 days.

Closes #49

Type

  • feat

Money path

  • This PR can change whether a payment gets confirmed

AI assistance (policy)

  • AI tools used: Claude Code (superpowers: TDD, verified before commit)
  • I have reviewed and can explain every line in this PR

Checklist

  • make test passes offline (race detector on)
  • Tests added or updated for the change
  • Money stays in integer paise, no floats
  • I have signed the CLA

Notes

Stacked: base is feat/47-ai-fallback. Not built: the Ask screen, the language of the sentence (only numbers are returned), and the per-question list beyond the four. Model mapping is covered by the stub only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Adds an AI path that selects and runs fixed, read-only queries against stored data. The change also configures the reader pool as read-only and updates the Go and govulncheck versions.

Changes: Read-only assistant queries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fixed queries and read-only execution
internal/askdata/askdata.go, internal/askdata/askdata_test.go, internal/store/store.go
Adds four named queries for receipts, order counts, refund totals, and review backlog. Validates date windows and order states. Executes queries through the read pool, which is configured as read-only. Tests cover parameters, query execution, unknown names, and read-only behavior.
AI query selection and dispatch
internal/ai/ask.go, internal/ai/ask_test.go
Adds schema-limited query selection, defaults missing date bounds, and passes the selected query and parameters to askdata.Run. Tests cover a known query, a no-query response, and an unrecognized query name.

Possibly related issues

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 55bc1

Assistant totals can be wrong for valid date bounds or omit records from the current second. Correct the date handling before merging; also address the test-coverage gap and Go guideline violations.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 55bc1

Assistant requests are restricted to fixed data reads, with additional write prevention. No new externally reachable access path was found. Real-provider behavior and connection-lifecycle validation remain incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The reader configuration affects every consumer of a Store's shared reader pool, not just assistant queries. Writer transactions remain on a separate, single-connection pool.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An adversarial question or provider response can influence selection among permitted aggregates, but the inspected path does not allow that text to become SQL. The injection test supplies a predetermined none response; it does not demonstrate that a real provider will classify every injection attempt as none.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Provider output crosses an enum-and-schema validation boundary before query dispatch. Fixed SQL, bound parameters, state validation, and date-window checks independently constrain database access rather than relying solely on provider instructions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Source supports enforcement across pool expansion and replacement: each driver open applies the DSN pragmas before returning a connection, pragma failure closes that connection, and session reset does not clear the setting. Store initialization has no fallback from the reader to writer pool. The direct INSERT test exercises the real store path, but runtime concurrency, cancellation, and reopen scenarios remain unvalidated in this review.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before adding an external Ask entrypoint, require appropriate owner authorization and bind the store server-side. Validate real-provider query selection separately from the deterministic SQL restrictions; these are future integration requirements, not observed authorization defects in this PR.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(ai): read-only questions over fixed queries; read pool refuses writes" matches the main changes: a fixed-query assistant (internal/ai/ask.go, internal/askdata) and a read-only reader pool in internal/store/store.go. It is specific and follows conventional-commit style. It omits the dependency-version bumps (Go 1.27.3, golang:1.27, govulncheck v1.2.0), which are minor and do not need to appear in the title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: What, Type, Money path, AI assistance, Checklist, and Notes. The What section explains the change and references Closes #49. Type is marked feat, and AI tool use is declared. The Money path box is unchecked, which the template allows. Several items remain open: the CLA box is unchecked, the Screenshots section is absent, and the Checklist omits the simulator, string catalogue, and design-doc items. The description also does not justify the new Go version and govulncheck bumps in the Notes, and it does not state the new dependency status. These gaps are not critical, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #49 requires read-only answers with the numbers used and answers in the merchant's language. The fixed queries use SELECT statements, return named numeric rows, and use a read pool with SQLite query_only, so the read-only and evidence requirements are implemented. The result is machine-readable data only. It has no merchant-language answer text. The four query names also provide no dedicated unmatched-items or top-days answer listed in #49.

Resolution

Implement the remaining #49 coding requirements: provide merchant-language answer output and add supported queries for unmatched items and top days, with automated tests. Keep the read-only and numbers-used behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The fixed-query assistant, its tests, and the read-only pool support #49. The changes to go.mod Go version, the Docker build image, and the govulncheck workflow version do not support the linked issue's assistant behavior or read-only data access.

Resolution

Revert these version and workflow changes from this PR, or move them to a separate version-maintenance PR.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 46.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 15 functions across 5 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Construct the schema per request instead of sharing a mutable map.

askSchema is a mutable package global passed to the provider and validator. Construct a fresh schema for each call so one call cannot change another call’s validation rules. As per coding guidelines: “no package globals.”

Detect standalone write statements in SQL literals.

TestNoWriteVerbsInAskPackage requires SELECT on the same line, so a standalone literal such as `DELETE FROM orders` can pass. Remove that requirement.

Suggested fix
-			if strings.Contains(line, "`") && write.MatchString(line) && !strings.Contains(line, "Scan") && strings.Contains(line, "SELECT") {
- t.Errorf("%s: write verb near a SELECT: %s", f, strings.TrimSpace(line))
+			if strings.Contains(line, "`") && write.MatchString(line) && !strings.Contains(line, "Scan") {
+ t.Errorf("%s: write verb in SQL literal: %s", f, strings.TrimSpace(line))

This improves regression coverage. TestEveryNameRuns may catch a write in an executed registered query, but it does not enforce the source-file invariant for unexecuted literals.

Preserve the default upper bound’s precision.

If now has fractional seconds, Format(time.RFC3339) moves p.To back to the start of that second. askdata.Run uses an exclusive upper bound, so a record from the current second is omitted even if it precedes now. Use a bound that represents the intended instant at the database’s timestamp precision. (pkg.go.dev)

Normalize date bounds before the SQL comparison.

window accepts offsets and fractional seconds, but the queries format the parsed values with time.RFC3339. That format preserves an offset and discards fractional seconds. For example, a bound of 2026-01-01T00:00:00+05:30 does not compare as its UTC instant against UTC timestamp text. A bound ending in .500Z also moves back to the whole second. Normalize bounds to the stored timestamp format, or reject bounds that the format cannot represent. (pkg.go.dev)
