What

Four fixed detectors (review burst, same payer with several amounts, amounts just under the auto-confirm limit, late-night alerts) produce hints with IDs. The AI can only rephrase a hint that has a detector ID; anything else is refused. Hints never carry actions. Setup help uses a fixed shape (extra fields refused). All AI features stay off by default (tested).

Closes #50

Type

  • feat

Money path

  • This PR can change whether a payment gets confirmed

AI assistance (policy)

  • AI tools used: Claude Code (superpowers: TDD, verified before commit)
  • I have reviewed and can explain every line in this PR

Checklist

  • make test passes offline (race detector on)
  • Tests added or updated for the change
  • Money stays in integer paise, no floats
  • I have signed the CLA

Notes

Stacked: base is feat/48-ai-statement. PARTIAL against card 39: the review summary on the review page, the phone-model setup screen, and translation drafts (kaasu i18n draft) are not built; only the detectors, the phrasing gate and the shape check.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added detection for recurring review items, repeated payments from the same payer, payments just below limits, and nighttime alerts. Detected patterns can now be turned into concise AI-generated hints.
  • Chores
    • Updated the Go version used by the project’s build environment and refreshed its vulnerability-checking tool.

The PR adds deterministic anomaly-hint detection and AI-based phrasing with schema and error checks. It also updates the Go directive, Docker build image, and govulncheck version.

Changes: Anomaly Hints

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hint facts and detection
internal/ai/hints.go, internal/ai/hints_test.go
Adds Hint and Facts types. Detect emits hints at thresholds of 5 review items, 3 same-payer amounts, 3 just-below-limit amounts, or 3 night alerts. Tests cover threshold behavior.
Hint phrasing and validation
internal/ai/hints.go, internal/ai/hints_test.go
Adds Phrase, which requests JSON text of up to 200 characters for a hint with an ID. Tests cover missing IDs, a stub response, extra fields in setup-help output, and AI features being off by default.

Go Toolchain and Security Check

Layer / File(s) Summary
Go and vulnerability checker versions
go.mod, Dockerfile, .github/workflows/security.yml
Changes the Go directive to 1.27.3, the Docker build image to golang:1.27, and the govulncheck version to v1.2.0. The vulnerability check still targets ./....

Change: Feature

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 41: The Go version and govulncheck updates overlap with its security-scanning scope; signed releases and SBOMs are not included.
  • Issue 53: The security workflow and Go version updates overlap with its CI security-check scope; its broader build, test, and branch-protection requirements are not included.
  • Issue 39: The Docker build image update overlaps with its build scope; the installer, compose file, and access guide are not included.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 9e21e

Hint phrasing does not verify detector provenance, and the tests use a package-level settings map contrary to the project convention. These bounded concerns do not block merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9e21e

The feature remains disabled by default, and no production request path using it was found in the reviewed repository. However, its interface accepts invented detector IDs and caller-written text, so the promised detector-only restriction is incomplete. No payment-changing path was found.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The new phrasing boundary does not enforce detector provenance. Any caller can construct a Hint with an arbitrary non-empty ID and arbitrary text, bypassing the intended restriction to detected observations while still passing the existing enablement, masking, and budget gates. This is a latent package-contract weakness; no production attacker-controlled caller was located.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is an internal package interface exercised by tests, not a remotely reachable production feature. If integrated later, its direct effects would include provider input, usage accounting, ledger metadata, and returned prose. No tenant-wide, cross-service, credential-escalation, or payment-mutation path is established by the reviewed code.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A caller can construct an invented non-empty detector ID with unrelated text and reach Run through Phrase. Existing enablement, notice, masking, and budget controls still apply. The missing control is binding the request to a real detector result; remote attacker influence over such a caller has not been demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The provider boundary retains input masking and response-shape validation. Neither control establishes that input originated with Detect, that output faithfully restates a detected observation, or that allowed text is action-free. No downstream action authority was found to amplify that semantic uncertainty.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The pre-existing pipeline invokes the provider before validation and accounting, and budget admission is a separate read without reservation. Provider or validation failures record no usage; interruption during recording can leave completed provider work without committed accounting. Concurrent or repeated calls are not deduplicated. These properties predate this PR, and no newly reachable production caller was found, so they are not retained as introduced concerns.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before connecting production callers, make detector provenance an enforced contract rather than relying on a non-empty string—for example, derive phrasing input from detector-owned results instead of independently supplied ID and text. Preserve the display-only boundary regardless of response wording.

Explanation

The description covers the change, issue reference, type, money-path impact, AI assistance, testing, and scope limitations. Several checklist items remain unchecked, but the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #50 is open, so its End state items are active coding requirements. Status by item:

  1. Plain-language summary on review items: NOT MET. The PR description states review-page summaries are not built. No changed file in the whole-PR summary implements this.
  2. Hints for unusual patterns (never automatic actions): MET. internal/ai/hints.go adds Detect, which emits fixed-ID hints for review bursts, same-payer amounts, just-below-limit amounts, and night alerts. Phrase rejects hints without an ID (ErrSchema). The Hint type has no action field. hints_test.go covers thresholds, ID-less drop, and off-by-default behavior.
  3. Phone-model-specific setup guidance: NOT MET. The PR description states phone-model setup screen work is not built. The only setup-related code is the fixed-shape check that refuses extra fields. That check is validation, not guidance.
  4. Translation drafts for new languages: NOT MET. The PR description states translation drafts are not built.

The PR description says it closes #50. Three of four End state items remain unimplemented. Assessment uses the whole-PR summary and PR description; no diff hunks were read.

Resolution

Either (a) implement the three unmet items in this PR: the plain-language review-item summary, the phone-model-specific setup guidance, and the translation drafts, with automated tests; or (b) change the PR description so it does not close #50, state that it partially addresses #50 (hints only, plus setup-help shape validation), and link the remaining items to an open issue that tracks them. Option (b) also requires the 'Closes #50' reference to be removed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR summary shows toolchain and CI changes that do not connect to #50's requirements or to the hints and setup-help work:

  • go.mod: Go version directive changed from 1.26.0 to 1.27.3.
  • Dockerfile: build stage image changed from golang:1.26 to golang:1.27.
  • .github/workflows/security.yml: govulncheck changed from v1.1.4 to v1.2.0.

The PR objectives cite commit messages that give two reasons: standard-library vulnerabilities, and a govulncheck v1.1.4 crash on Go 1.27 code. Neither reason concerns AI review summaries, anomaly hints, setup help, or translation drafts. The PR description does not mention these changes. No evidence in the summary shows that the detector or phrasing code requires Go 1.27.

Resolution

Move the Go toolchain bump (go.mod, Dockerfile) and the govulncheck update (security.yml) to a separate pull request with its own issue reference. Alternatively, if the hints code truly requires Go 1.27, state that dependency in the PR description, cite the specific API or language feature used, and link the issue that requires it. Then re-assess.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 57.14% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 7 functions across 2 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Keep test settings out of package state.

The repository’s no package globals convention applies to Go test files. No test exception is defined. Return a fresh map for each setup call.

Replace the package-level hintsOn map with a hintsOn function that returns a
fresh settings map for each test setup. Update each setup call that currently
passes hintsOn to invoke hintsOn(), keeping the existing settings unchanged.

Keep the schema as written.

Validate rejects every object property that is absent from schema["properties"]. The extra field therefore causes validation to fail without requiring additionalProperties: false.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Require a hint produced by a detector.

A non-empty ID is sufficient to pass this check. A caller can pass Hint{ID: "unknown", Text: "arbitrary text"}, and Phrase sends that text for AI phrasing. Check the ID against the fixed detectors and use the detector’s text, rather than trusting a caller-supplied ID and text pair. This enforces the PR objective that AI phrases only detected hints.
