What this PR does / why we need it:

Remove verify-crd-schema from make verify-ci, which is shared by Prow's ci/prow/verify and GitHub Actions' verify / Verify. Schema compatibility will instead be enforced by the dedicated required Prow context ci/prow/verify-crd-schema, allowing intentional API changes to be accepted without overriding unrelated verification.

Keep schema compatibility in local make verify, correct the checker's override guidance, and document the dedicated check and API review requirement. This does not change crdify's validation rules or add a new test harness.

Which issue(s) this PR fixes:

No linked issue; this is a CI wiring and documentation change.

Special notes for your reviewer:

Depends on openshift/release#87818. Merge and activate that PR's new required schema context before merging this PR to avoid a gap in schema compatibility enforcement.

Use /test verify-crd-schema to rerun the dedicated check and, after API review and approval, /override ci/prow/verify-crd-schema for the current commit. No aggregate or sticky override is necessary.

Validation:

  • make verify-crd-schema PULL_BASE_SHA=<base SHA> passed: 14 CRDs checked, zero warnings.
  • Go formatting and git diff --check passed; the existing test file is unchanged.
  • Reviewed both CI entry points: both invoke make verify-ci; local make verify retains schema verification through verify-parallel.

Checklist:

  • Subject and description added to both, commit and PR.
  • Relevant issues have been referenced. (No issue; linked the required release PR.)
  • This change includes docs.
  • This change includes unit tests. (No validation behavior change; existing tests are unchanged.)

Keep schema compatibility independently overridable without waiving
general Prow or GitHub Actions verification. Preserve local make verify
coverage and document the dedicated context and API review requirement.

  • The existing checker unit suite has three baseline failures, reproduced before these edits: field removal, enum removal, and field-type-change cases expect errors while the current configuration reports warnings. These failures were not changed or fixed by this PR.

Walkthrough

The CI guidance now distinguishes GitHub Actions targets from dedicated Prow checks. verify-ci no longer runs verify-crd-schema, while local make verify still includes schema compatibility checks. Failure instructions now require API review and approval before using the commit-scoped Prow override. The path lookup comment now references the behavior used in openshift/api.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 88129

Wait until the dedicated schema check is active and required before merging, or CRD compatibility changes may no longer block a merge.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: schema compatibility checking is moved out of general verification. The PR removes verify-crd-schema from make verify-ci, adds a dedicated required Prow check (ci/prow/verify-crd-schema), and keeps schema verification in local make verify. The title is specific and matches the changeset. The NO-JIRA prefix is a tracking convention and does not affect relevance. Note that the PR references no Jira issue, as openshift-ci-robot reported, but the title itself is not misleading.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

The pull request changes only CONTRIBUTING.md, Makefile, and hack/tools/crd-schema-check/main.go. The diff adds or modifies no Ginkgo tests or test titles, so it introduces no unstable or overly-specific test name.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only CONTRIBUTING.md, Makefile, and hack/tools/crd-schema-check/main.go. The diff adds no Ginkgo test files, It blocks, or test setup, cleanup, wait, or assertion code. Therefore the listed Ginkgo test-quality requirements do not apply.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only CONTRIBUTING.md, Makefile verification wiring, and CRD checker messages/comments. It does not add or modify deployment manifests, operator code, controllers, replicas, affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, or PDBs. The topology-aware scheduling check is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only CONTRIBUTING.md, Makefile, and hack/tools/crd-schema-check/main.go. The diff adds no Ginkgo e2e tests or test code, so it introduces no IPv4 assumptions or external connectivity requirements covered by this check.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes CI documentation, the verify-ci Makefile prerequisites, and CRD schema-checker guidance only. The diff introduces no MD5, SHA1, DES, RC4, 3DES, Blowfish, ECB, custom cryptography, or secret/token comparison code.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only CONTRIBUTING.md, Makefile, and hack/tools/crd-schema-check/main.go. It adds no container or Kubernetes manifest, and no changed line introduces privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation, or root settings.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes CI documentation, Makefile dependencies, and static CRD-checker guidance. The only new checker output is fixed text about API review and the current-commit override. No new logging of passwords, tokens, API keys, PII, session IDs, hostnames, or customer data is introduced. Existing path and validation-result output is unchanged.

L167: ## Summary
L168:
L169: * Add the required, always-run `ci/prow/verify-crd-schema` presubmit for HyperShift&#39;s public and private `main` branches.
L170: * Run the existing `make verify-crd-schema` target from `src`, using the current verification resource allocation, with its own `/test verify-crd-schema` rerun command.
L171: * Regenerate the public and private Prow job definitions using the release repository tooling.
L172: This is the additive first step of separating schema compatibility from general verification. Merge and activate this configuration before merging the companion HyperShift change that removes schema compatibility from `make verify-ci`. Temporary duplicate checking is intentional during rollout.
L173: ## Test plan
L174: * [Input] Run `make update CONTAINER_ENGINE=podman`.
L175: * [Input] Inspect the generated diff: only the two intended source configurations and their two generated presubmit files changed.
L176: * [Input] Validate that both generated schema jobs are required and always-run, have distinct contexts/targets, preserve general verification, and support `/test verify-crd-schema`.
L177: * [Input] Run `git diff --check`.
L178: * [Input] Validate Prow configuration in CI.
L179: * [Input] Rehearse the new presubmit and confirm the context is active after merge.
L180: ## Summary by CodeRabbit
L181:
L182: * Adds a dedicated `verify-crd-schema` presubmit to the public and private HyperShift `main` CI configurations.
L183: * The job runs `make verify-crd-schema` in the `src` container on arm64, with a one-hour timeout and 4,000m CPU and 8Gi memory requests and limits.
L184: * This separates schema verification into its own CI job while the existing `make verify-ci` job remains configured.

L216: &gt; ## Summary
L217: &gt;
L218: &gt; * Add the required, always-run `ci/prow/verify-crd-schema` presubmit for HyperShift&#39;s public and private `main` branches.
L219: &gt; * Run the existing `make verify-crd-schema` target from `src`, using the current verification resource allocation, with its own `/test verify-crd-schema` rerun command.
L220: &gt; * Regenerate the public and private Prow job definitions using the release repository tooling.
L221: &gt; This is the additive first step of separating schema compatibility from general verification. Merge and activate this configuration before merging the companion HyperShift change that removes schema compatibility from `make verify-ci`. Temporary duplicate checking is intentional during rollout.
L222: &gt;
L223: &gt; ## Test plan
L224: &gt;
L225: &gt; * [Input] Run `make update CONTAINER_ENGINE=podman` (with PyYAML provided through uv and an isolated anonymous registry auth file).
L226: &gt; * [Input] Inspect the generated diff: only the two intended source configurations and their two generated presubmit files changed.
L227: &gt; * [Input] Validate that both generated schema jobs are required and always-run, have distinct contexts/targets, preserve general verification, and support `/test verify-crd-schema`.
L228: &gt; * [Input] Run `git diff --check`.
L229: &gt; * [Input] Complete Prow `make checkconfig CONTAINER_ENGINE=podman`: attempted locally, but the container failed before validation with `stat /release/core-services/prow/02_config: invalid argument` (the checkconfig image is amd64 and the Podman VM is arm64).
L230: &gt; * [Input] Rehearse the new presubmit and confirm the context is active after merge.

Do not merge until ci/prow/verify-crd-schema is active and required.

verify-ci no longer runs verify-crd-schema, and GitHub Actions still runs make verify-ci. The referenced openshift/release#87818 change is still open and draft. Its description requires the dedicated required presubmit to be merged and activated before this companion change. Until then, CRD compatibility is not a merge-blocking check.

Review comment at @Makefile at line 188:
Update the verify-ci prerequisites to include verify-crd-schema so the GitHub
Actions workflow running make verify-ci checks CRD compatibility.
