CNTRLPLANE-4829: surface a condition when operatorConfiguration settings are not honored by the CPO - #10139
Reports, on the HostedCluster, when a setting configured under spec.operatorConfiguration is not actually in effect because the reconciling control-plane-operator predates it.
During an HO/CPO skew window the API server accepts and persists the setting, the HO mirrors it onto the HostedControlPlane, and the CPO drops it on decode. The cluster stays Available, nothing is Degraded, and the only way to find out is to read the rendered flag off the kube-apiserver config ConfigMap or the running pods on the management cluster — which a hosted-cluster administrator cannot do at all.
This adds a single generic condition covering the whole stanza, not one per setting.
$ oc get hostedcluster -n clusters example -o jsonpath='{.status.conditions[?(@.type=="OperatorConfigurationHonored")]}'
type: OperatorConfigurationHonored
status: "False"
reason: OperatorConfigurationNotHonored
message: operatorConfiguration setting kubeAPIServer.eventTTLMinutes is not in effect:
control plane operator version 5.0.3 does not support it. It will take effect
once the control plane is upgraded to a version that does.
How it works
The CPO publishes, on HostedControlPlane.status.operatorConfiguration.honoredFields, the paths of the settings that survived decoding into its own build's types. Because the API server serves settings added after that build but they are dropped on decode, re-encoding what survived yields exactly the settings that CPO understands — with no knowledge of which settings exist in later releases.
The HO derives the same paths from the spec using its build and names the difference. Neither side needs per-field knowledge of the other, so settings added in future releases are covered automatically with no new wiring.
A CPO released before this reporting existed cannot report anything, so the condition is Unknown for those versions rather than claiming the settings are honored. Settings that shipped alongside the mechanism carry a recorded minimum CPO version and are still named in that window. That floor map is a closed, shrinking set; a unit test fails if a setting introduced after the mechanism is added to it.
Design points from the card

Resolution
Condition type and polarity
OperatorConfigurationHonored, positive polarity. One generic condition for the whole stanza; the message names the settings.
How the HO learns what the CPO supports
The CPO reports the settings it honored, derived from its own decode. No version table, no per-field wiring.
Behaviour outside a skew window
True when nothing is configured or everything is honored. It does not flap through a routine control plane upgrade: an upgrade bumps the HCP generation without changing any setting, and the condition only reacts when a configured setting is genuinely missing from the report. A discrepancy against a report for an earlier generation is Unknown, not a false alarm.
Informational or affects Progressing
Informational. The setting is persisted and takes effect on upgrade; this is not a reason to hold a rollout.
Prior work reused
HostedClusterConfigurationDeprecated — the generic, message-carrying condition that the CPO sets on the HCP and the HO folds up onto the HostedCluster. Same shape and plumbing.
SupportsGCPRuntimeCredentialValidation in support/conditions/gcp.go — the established semver predicate over hcp.Status.ControlPlaneVersion.Desired.Version. This PR also replaces that path's literal "UnsupportedControlPlaneVersion" reason with the new shared constant.
Acceptance criteria
Setting an unsupported operatorConfiguration field produces an observable condition naming the unhonored setting(s)
The condition clears once the CPO is upgraded and the setting takes effect
No condition is reported when every configured setting is honored, including through a normal control plane upgrade
The mechanism is generic and does not require per-field wiring for each new setting
Unit and e2e coverage
Testing
Unit tests cover the full state machine: honored, unhonored, stale report, CPO too old, version unknown, not yet reported, and partial-honored. support/operatorconfig tests cover path derivation, the cross-build decode property the mechanism rests on, the version predicate, the floor map, and the closed-set invariant. N-1/N+1 serialization tests cover the new status field for consumers that embed these types.
The v2 e2e suite asserts the CPO reports exactly what the HCP spec configures, that the HostedCluster reports it honored without flapping, and that a newly configured real setting (kubeAPIServer.logLevel) is tracked through to the CPO.
One limitation worth calling out in review: the False path is not covered by e2e. Deterministically exercising it needs an actually-older CPO — on a same-version cluster the CPO rewrites honoredFields on its next reconcile, so patching it away races the controller and would be flaky. The False path is covered by unit tests; the e2e specs run under the upgrade jobs, which is where a real skew window occurs.
honoredFieldsReportingMinVersion is set to 5.1.0 on the assumption this lands in 5.1.
A setting the installed CRD accepts but the HyperShift operator predates is dropped by the HO too, and is not reported. That is the second skew direction in the enhancement and is out of scope here.
Hosted clusters now report whether configured control plane operator settings are honored and identify settings that are not applied.
The status reflects control plane operator version support and updates when a newer operator can apply previously unsupported settings.
The condition may be unknown when compatibility or status information is unavailable, including with older operators that do not report honored settings.
Documentation
Added guidance on how operator configuration behaves when the HyperShift Operator and Control Plane Operator versions differ, including how to interpret the new status condition.
…ds status
Settings under HostedCluster.spec.operatorConfiguration are accepted by the API
server, mirrored onto the HostedControlPlane, and then silently ignored by a
control plane operator that predates them. The cluster stays Available and no
condition says the configured value is not the value in effect.
Add the generic OperatorConfigurationHonored condition on the HostedCluster, so
that one condition covers the whole stanza and every setting added to it rather
than needing a condition per setting.
Add HostedControlPlane.status.operatorConfiguration.honoredFields, where the
control plane operator reports the settings that survived decoding into its own
build's types. That list is exactly the set of settings it understands, so the
difference from what the spec configures names the settings that are not in
effect, with neither operator needing per-field knowledge of the other.

Walkthrough
The change adds operatorConfiguration status to HostedControlPlane, including the observed generation and honored field paths. The control-plane operator reports those paths. The HostedCluster operator compares them with configured settings and control-plane operator version support to set the OperatorConfigurationHonored condition. Unit, compatibility, and end-to-end tests cover reporting and condition outcomes. Documentation describes behavior during operator version skew.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: a new condition, OperatorConfigurationHonored, that is set when the control plane operator (CPO) does not honor a spec.operatorConfiguration setting. The raw summary confirms the changeset adds this condition, the honored-fields status reporting, and the HO-side evaluation. The title also carries the CNTRLPLANE-4829 Jira key, which the repository convention accepts. The title is specific and matches the PR objectives.
Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names
Explanation
The pull request adds only static Ginkgo titles. The new When, two It titles, and Describe title contain no pod names, timestamps, UUIDs, node or namespace names, IP addresses, or other run-dependent values. They also contain none of the prohibited legacy metadata tokens. The titles are descriptive and generic.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request adds status reporting, API fields, version checks, tests, documentation, and generated CRD schema updates. The modified controller code only reads operatorConfiguration and writes status or conditions. The reviewed diff adds no anti-affinity, topology spread, replica, node selector/affinity, toleration, PDB, or other scheduling constraint. No topology-aware scheduling failure is introduced.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
The new Ginkgo e2e test only uses cluster API clients and HostedCluster/HostedControlPlane resources. It contains no hardcoded IPv4 addresses or CIDRs, IPv4-only parsing, IP-based URL construction, or connections to public or external services. The Apache license URL is not used by the test.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
PASS. The pull-request diff adds status, field-path, version, and condition logic only. The new helper imports encoding/json, fmt, slices, and semver; no crypto packages, weak algorithms, custom cryptography, or secret/token comparisons appear in the changed lines.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
No privileged configuration was introduced. The pull request adds CRD schema fields and controller logic, not container or workload manifests. Added YAML lines contain only operatorConfiguration status schema fields. No added lines contain privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation, root, or securityContext settings.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
The PR adds only two production log calls in control-plane-operator/controllers/hostedcontrolplane/hostedcontrolplane_controller.go. The error log records the JSON path-processing error without the operator configuration, and the info log records only numeric count and max values. No added log statement emits passwords, tokens, keys, hostnames, PII, or customer data.
Full details: Test Structure And Quality
Explanation
The standing failure remains unresolved in the reviewed PR. The new Ginkgo test has cluster-operation assertions without diagnostic messages: HostedCluster setup at line 121, HCP List/Get at lines 52 and 62, CRD Get at line 76, cleanup Patch at line 171, and configuration Patch at line 182. The initial honored-fields precondition at line 177 also has no message. The second test skips only when the existing value is Debug (lines 163-165). The API accepts Normal, Debug, Trace, and TraceAll (api/hypershift/v1beta1/operator.go:21-40), and the CPO reports any configured decoded logLevel (support/operatorconfig/operatorconfig.go:53-77; control-plane-operator/...:639-657). Therefore an existing Normal, Trace, or TraceAll value is reported as honored, and the initial NotTo assertion can fail on a valid cluster. The test does have bounded waits, cleanup, and informing labels.
Resolution
Add meaningful messages to every cluster-operation and precondition assertion, including the HostedCluster/HCP/CRD reads and both configuration patches. Make the second test require an absent kubeAPIServer.logLevel, or explicitly handle and restore every existing value before asserting that the path is initially unhonored. Keep the bounded waits and cleanup.

Exercise the version-floor path through the reconciler.
The subtest calls operatorconfig.UnhonoredBefore directly and does not assert an OperatorConfigurationHonored=False condition. The other reconciler False cases use honored-field comparison and do not enter the version-floor branch.
Provide a test seam for the floor lookup, then invoke reconcileOperatorConfigurationHonoredStatus with a floored path and assert the False condition and setting name. Renaming this subtest alone would leave that reconciler branch untested.

TestFieldPathsIsStableAcrossBuilds does not exercise the unknown-field decode that its comment describes.
The test never decodes JSON that contains an unknown key. The DeepCopy() case compares two identical values. The nil case re-tests Unhonored, which TestUnhonored already covers. If decoding stopped dropping unknown settings, this test would still pass.
Decode raw JSON that includes an unknown key into hyperv1.OperatorConfiguration. Compare the paths from that struct with the paths from the raw document. The test then checks the behavior its comment describes.

Add "encoding/json" and "slices" to the imports.
If decoding ever retains unknown settings, the honored set would include kubeAPIServer.futureSetting. The final assertion would then fail.

Compute the OperatorConfigurationHonored condition on the HostedCluster from two
sources, in order of precision: the settings the control plane operator echoed
back on status.operatorConfiguration.honoredFields, which covers every setting
generically including ones added after this code was written; and, for settings
that predate that reporting, a recorded minimum control plane operator version.
Reuse the HCP-reports / HO-surfaces shape already used by
HostedClusterConfigurationDeprecated.
Keep the condition quiet in the normal case. It is True when nothing is
configured or everything is honored, and it does not flap through a routine
control plane upgrade: an upgrade bumps the HostedControlPlane generation
without changing any setting, and the condition only reacts when a configured
setting is actually missing from what the control plane operator reports. A
discrepancy against a report for an earlier generation is reported as Unknown
rather than as a false alarm, since the control plane operator may simply not
have caught up yet.
A control plane operator released before this reporting existed cannot report
anything, so the condition is Unknown for those versions rather than claiming
the settings are honored. The per-setting version floors are a closed set that
covers settings shipped alongside the mechanism; settings added later are
reported generically and must not be added to it.
Also replace the literal UnsupportedControlPlaneVersion reason in the GCP
credential conditions with the shared constant.

Echo back on status.operatorConfiguration.honoredFields the settings this build
understood from spec.operatorConfiguration, so a newer HyperShift operator can
name the settings a lagging control plane operator silently ignores.
The echo needs no knowledge of which settings exist in later releases: the API
server serves settings added after this build, but they are dropped when the
spec is decoded into this build's types, so re-encoding what survived yields
exactly the settings that are in effect.
Report nothing rather than a truncated list when a configuration exceeds what
the status field can hold, since a truncated list is indistinguishable from
settings having been dropped and would read as a false skew report.

Add a v2 e2e suite that asserts the control plane operator reports exactly the
settings the HostedControlPlane spec configures, that the HostedCluster reports
them as honored without flapping, and that a newly configured real setting is
tracked through to the control plane operator.
Add N-1 and N+1 serialization tests for the new HostedControlPlane status
field, so a consumer that embeds these types can still read a status written by
the other version.

Document the OperatorConfigurationHonored condition in the versioning and
support reference, next to the existing skew policy: what each status and
reason means, how the honoredFields comparison works, why the condition does
not flap through a control plane upgrade, and how to resolve it.
Regenerate the API reference and aggregated docs.

What this does
Reports, on the HostedCluster, when a setting configured under
spec.operatorConfigurationis not actually in effect because the reconciling control-plane-operator predates it.During an HO/CPO skew window the API server accepts and persists the setting, the HO mirrors it onto the HostedControlPlane, and the CPO drops it on decode. The cluster stays
Available, nothing isDegraded, and the only way to find out is to read the rendered flag off the kube-apiserver config ConfigMap or the running pods on the management cluster — which a hosted-cluster administrator cannot do at all. This adds a single generic condition covering the whole stanza, not one per setting.
How it works
The CPO publishes, on
HostedControlPlane.status.operatorConfiguration.honoredFields, the paths of the settings that survived decoding into its own build's types.
A CPO released before this reporting existed cannot report anything, so the condition is
Unknownfor those versions rather than claiming the settings are honored. Settings that shipped alongside the mechanism carry a recorded minimum CPO version and are still named in that window. That floor map is a closed, shrinking set; a unit test fails if a setting introduced after the mechanism is added to it.Design points from the card
OperatorConfigurationHonored, positive polarity. One generic condition for the whole stanza; the message names the settings.Truewhen nothing is configured or everything is honored. It does not flap through a routine control plane upgrade: an upgrade bumps the HCP generation without changing any setting, and the condition only reacts when a configured setting is genuinely missing from the report. A discrepancy against a report for an earlier generation isUnknown, not a false alarm.ProgressingPrior work reused
HostedClusterConfigurationDeprecated— the generic, message-carrying condition that the CPO sets on the HCP and the HO folds up onto the HostedCluster. Same shape and plumbing.SupportsGCPRuntimeCredentialValidationinsupport/conditions/gcp.go— the established semver predicate overhcp.Status.ControlPlaneVersion.Desired.Version. This PR also replaces that path's literal"UnsupportedControlPlaneVersion"reason with the new shared constant.Acceptance criteria
operatorConfigurationfield produces an observable condition naming the unhonored setting(s)Testing
Unit tests cover the full state machine: honored, unhonored, stale report, CPO too old, version unknown, not yet reported, and partial-honored.
support/operatorconfigtests cover path derivation, the cross-build decode property the mechanism rests on, the version predicate, the floor map, and the closed-set invariant. N-1/N+1 serialization tests cover the new status field for consumers that embed these types. The v2 e2e suite asserts the CPO reports exactly what the HCP spec configures, that the HostedCluster reports it honored without flapping, and that a newly configured real setting (
kubeAPIServer.logLevel) is tracked through to the CPO.One limitation worth calling out in review: the
Falsepath is not covered by e2e. Deterministically exercising it needs an actually-older CPO — on a same-version cluster the CPO rewriteshonoredFieldson its next reconcile, so patching it away races the controller and would be flaky. TheFalsepath is covered by unit tests; the e2e specs run under the upgrade jobs, which is where a real skew window occurs.Notes for reviewers

The entry is a string key, so it compiles and is inert until that lands — at which point the motivating case is covered against pre-5.1 CPOs.
