Description
On pearOS NiceC0re 26.8 (Arch Linux-based, KDE Plasma, Wayland), the system language and KDE locale are set to Simplified Chinese, but the PearOS Settings application is still displayed entirely in English.
Environment:
- pearOS NiceC0re 26.8
system-settings 26.7.0-1
- Application:
systemsettings1
LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=zh_CN
Steps to reproduce
- Set the system and KDE locale to Simplified Chinese (
zh_CN).
- Launch the PearOS Settings application (
systemsettings1).
- Inspect the sidebar and search box.
Actual behavior
The interface remains in English, including:
- Search
- Network
- Battery
- General
- Accessibility
- Appearance
- Menu Bar
- Pear Intelligence & Piri
- Desktop and Dock
- Displays
- Wallpaper
- Spotlight
- Notifications
- Sound
Expected behavior
The Settings application should follow the system/KDE zh_CN locale, or provide a language selector, and display Simplified Chinese translations.
Initial technical investigation
systemsettings1 is PearOS\x27s custom Qt/QML Settings application using the PearOSSettings QML module. In the upstream pearos-settings-app/qml/Main.qml, the navigation labels and search text appear to be literal English strings rather than translatable strings such as qsTr(). The source tree also does not appear to contain an application-specific Chinese translation catalog or translation resources.
This suggests that the issue is not caused by an incorrect system locale, but by missing i18n/l10n support in the PearOS Settings application.
Suggested implementation:
- Add Qt Linguist / Qt Quick translation support, for example by marking user-facing strings with
qsTr();
- Add at least a
zh_CN translation catalog;
- Keep English as the default fallback language;
- Install the generated translation resources in the built package and include them in CI/package builds.
Thank you for maintaining pearOS.
