R CMD check on macos-latest fails to extract mac.cran.dev's odbc binary #388

Description

@jat255

The macos-latest (release) job in R CMD check fails while it installs dependencies. pak downloads the odbc 1.7.1 binary from mac.cran.dev, and that file is Zstandard data with a .tgz name, so pak stops with "unknown archive type". CRAN has a valid gzip binary of the same build.

#389 works around this. It installs odbc from CRAN before pak runs, and pak keeps that copy.

Agent-written detail: verification
  • Posit Package Manager has no odbc binary for macOS arm64 and R 4.6. The file returns 404 and the PACKAGES index has no odbc entry, so pak resolves odbc from cran.rstudio.com, with mac.cran.dev as the second source.
  • cran.r-project.org and cran.rstudio.com serve a gzip file whose MD5 matches their PACKAGES index.
  • mac.cran.dev lists the same MD5 in its own PACKAGES index, but the file it serves has a different MD5.
  • The failure is repeatable. Both CI runs on 2026-09-23 failed the same way (on main after ci: bump the R CMD check dependency cache version #385, and on ci: install odbc from CRAN before pak on macOS #389 before its current approach), and a local run on R 4.6.1 arm64 with a fresh library reproduces it. In each pak log, the downloaded file is the 3.24 MB mac.cran.dev file, not the 3.81 MB CRAN file.
  • The cache bump in ci: bump the R CMD check dependency cache version #385 did not change the result.
