fix(responses): publish stored reasoning defaults into the live request body - #1793
Conversation
…st body A stored conversation configuration_update reasoning default was merged only into ResponsesState.request_body, and the selected-upstream rebuild re-injected it from state during its projection. Later filters never observed the effective reasoning setting in the body they saw, and reasoning was the only non-state-owned member the rebuild rewrote. Rehydration now publishes the merged body through replace_json_body when a stored effort default fills a vacant effort slot, so later filters can observe, edit, or remove the effective setting like any other request field. The rebuild then byte-preserves whatever the live body carries; the request_reasoning provenance capture and selected_reasoning_default injection are gone. Explicit per-request effort, including an explicit null, still wins over the stored default, and the translated lane reads the same merged state, so its behavior is unchanged. Tests: unit coverage for the published live body across absent, empty, explicit-null, and explicit-effort request shapes; rebuild tests assert byte-preservation against a state that still carries the stored default; the conversations SDK test extends the effective-effort loop with explicit null and empty reasoning objects on both lanes. The conversations SDK loop read effort through
body.get("reasoning", {}).get("effort"), which returns None both when an
explicit null effort was forwarded and when the reasoning object was
dropped entirely, so the explicit-null turn only proved the weaker of the
two. On the native lane, additionally require the reasoning object to be
present with effort null. The translated lane is untouched: its body
carries the top-level reasoning_effort field instead.

Adversarial Review — fix(responses): publish stored reasoning defaults
Excellent simplification that removes a complex RequestReasoningPresence provenance tracker in favor of publishing the merged default early. Net deletion of 59 lines while maintaining all existing behavior. CI has 3 failures (coverage, test-inference, lint-xtask) that need investigation.
Findings
- M1: Both
request_body_accessandbound_upstream_request_body_accessupgraded fromReadOnlytoReadWrite. Necessary for the design, but ensure no other code path in the rehydrate filter inadvertently modifies the body with the new permissions. - L1:
apply_stored_configurationreturn value drives whetherreplace_json_bodyis called. The fail-open behavior on write failure is appropriate. - L2: The 62-line
RequestReasoningPresenceenum removed entirely — genuine simplification reducing bug surface. 👍
Verdict: Recommend merge after CI issues are resolved.

@leseb the approval was dismissed by the last push (dismiss-stale-reviews). CI is green on the current head and the remaining review thread is resolved. Could you take another look when you get a chance? |
|
Closing out the remaining adversarial-review notes as stale. F2 (redhat-chai-bot M1, rehydrate body access): F3 (redhat-chai-bot L1/L2): The "CI has 3 failures" line in that review predates the merge that fixed the inference-fixture manifest drift; CI is green now. |

Signed-off-bytrailer.No new filter or config surface: the change tightens where an existing default is published, so no new example config applies. The only body-level cost is one re-serialization when a stored default actually fills a vacant effort slot, which the existing charge accounting already covers.
Breaking changes
None. Requests that relied on the old state-side injection still observe the same effective effort at the backend; the difference is only where the merged default becomes visible.
