Consume locally owned request fields and move generated values through the
Chat Completions to Vertex Gemini request translator, so a large request is no
longer deep-copied once at each ownership boundary.
transform_request takes the parsed body mutably and convert_messages
removes messages instead of borrowing it, so each message is consumed
field by field (std::mem::take / Value::take) during traversal.
Generated wrappers (contents, systemInstruction, parts, functionCall, functionResponse, functionDeclarations, toolConfig) are built with map
insertion and moved values instead of json! copies.
convert_image_url takes ownership of the part and drains the base64 prefix
in place, so a large inline image is moved rather than re-allocated.
Tool-result text is moved out of the disposable message; only the multipart
join still allocates, which is unavoidable.
Content-part and response_format discriminators are classified without
allocating a copy of the request string.
The tool-call name index from #1517 keeps its shape but now owns its short
id/name strings instead of borrowing them from messages. That is the change
that lets the traversal consume parsed fields at all: a borrowed index and a
mutable traversal cannot coexist over the same array. Two short strings per
tool call is the bounded cost; payloads are still moved, never copied.
Measured with the bench added here, same fixtures before and after:
cargo test -p praxis-ai-apis --features full # 1896 passed, 0 failed
cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings # clean
make lint # clean
cargo bench -p praxis-ai-apis --bench translation_overhead
The bench prints one allocation_report,<label>,count=...,bytes=... line per
fixture, which is where the before/after figures above come from. The Gemini
conversions are also driven end to end through the OpenAI client in tests/integration/sdk/openai/test_vertex_gemini_chat_completions.py.
Existing conversion tests pin the behavior this change must not alter: reused
and colliding tool-call ids, thought-signature forwarding, parallel tool-result
grouping into one user turn, absent versus null handling, schema forwarding,
and the rejection paths.

Summary
Message and tool-result conversion apis/src/vertex/gemini/request.rs, tests/integration/fixtures/inference/scenarios/vertex/invalid-content.yaml, tests/integration/sdk/openai/test_vertex_gemini_chat_completions.py
Message conversion moves text and image values into Gemini parts. Tool-result grouping uses preceding messages, and tool-call name lookup uses an owned index. Tests verify that non-string assistant text is rejected before an upstream request.
Generation settings and tool conversion apis/src/vertex/gemini/request.rs
Generation parameters, response format, tools, and tool choice are removed from the request and moved into Gemini configuration values.
Translation benchmark fixtures and measurements apis/benches/translation_overhead.rs
Gemini benchmarks measure translation for 8–256 matched call/result pairs, large multimodal and schema fields, and large system text, tool arguments, and thought signatures.
praxis-proxy/ai#1782: Adds the Gemini tool-call name index used during message traversal. This change moves call IDs into that index and changes its ownership behavior.

Explanation
The title "perf(gemini): move owned request fields and generated JSON values" matches the main change. The raw summary shows the Gemini request translator now consumes and moves owned request fields and generated JSON values instead of copying them. The PR objectives state the same intent, and the benchmark and translator changes support it. The title is specific, concise, and uses a conventional commit prefix.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR addresses the active coding requirements in [#1515]. transform_request and message conversion now consume owned fields. Map insertion moves generated wrappers, content parts, tool arguments/results, schemas, stop values, and signatures. The owned tool-call index preserves lookups during traversal. The benchmark covers inline images, schema data, tool results, large arguments, system text, and nested signatures. The PR also reports full-feature API tests and Clippy success. The added inference fixture and OpenAI integration test cover malformed content rejection. Existing conversion coverage remains the stated guard for IDs, signatures, grouping, null handling, schemas, and rejection paths.

the result wrapper instead of copying it through into_owned(). Preserve the
existing join allocation for multipart content.
- Line 411: Replace the `.to_owned()` discriminator copies with borrowed `&str`
matches in the request and multipart paths, mutating each part only in its
selected arm. Apply the same borrowing approach to `response_format.type` so
matching does not allocate copies of request strings.

Resolves the conflict with the tool-call name index (praxis-proxy#1517): the index now
owns short id/name copies instead of borrowing from the messages array, so
the traversal can consume parsed message fields without a lifetime clash
with the borrowed index.

Addresses review findings on the Gemini request translator:
- Classify user content parts into a Copy enum instead of allocating a
String per part just to select a match arm.
- Move response_format.type out of the parsed object instead of copying it.
- Move the single-string tool-result content out of the disposable message
so a large tool result is not copied through into_owned().

Splits the discriminator check out of the mutation loop so the content-part
type is borrowed only for the check instead of copied once per part, matching
the user-part path.

Move the thought signature from the owned tool call.
convert_assistant_message iterates over mutable tool calls, and the input message array is consumed during conversion. Change convert_tool_call to accept &mut Value and move thought_signature after validation and field extraction.
Suggested fix
-fn convert_tool_call(tc: &Value) -> Result<Value, String> {+fn convert_tool_call(tc: &mut Value) -> Result<Value, String> {
...
- if let Some(sig) = tc.pointer("/extra_content/google/thought_signature")+ if let Some(sig) = tc+ .pointer_mut("/extra_content/google/thought_signature")+ .map(Value::take)
&& !sig.is_null()
&& let Some(obj) = part.as_object_mut()
{
- obj.insert("thoughtSignature".to_owned(), sig.clone());+ obj.insert("thoughtSignature".to_owned(), sig);
}
This preserves the existing validation and tool-call index behavior. No later consumer needs the signature from the converted request.

REQUEST CHANGES. Two findings posted inline. Reviewed HEAD 86e26bc723d2 against merge base 3a3704c42344.
Findings
[MAJOR][Defect] Malformed text parts are silently discarded request.rs:372, also line 602. System, developer, and assistant parts containing non-string text previously returned an error. They now disappear during translation. A reproduction through the built proxy returned HTTP 200 and forwarded only the remaining user message. Restore string validation before filtering empty text and cover both conversion paths.
[MINOR][Defect] Tool-result names are unnecessarily cloned request.rs:724. The resolved name already owns a String, which is cloned and immediately dropped. Moving it into the response removes one allocation per tool result. The allocation probe confirmed this.
Missing proof and scope completion
Issue #1515 also remains partially implemented: system-instruction wrapping, parsed tool-call arguments, and thought signatures still incur redundant copies. These are unfinished requested optimizations, separate from the introduced defects above.
Restore rejection of non-string text parts in system, developer and assistant
messages; the ownership refactor had silently dropped them from the request.
Move the remaining owned values into their wrappers instead of copying:
systemInstruction parts, parsed tool-call arguments, nested thought
signatures, explicit tool-result names, and tool-call IDs in the name index.
The tool-call function name stays copied because convert_tool_call still reads
it from the same object.
Add pointer-identity regressions, separate allocation fixtures for each
boundary, and a synthetic inference turn covering the rejection path.
