Summary

Adds explicit, reproducible Anthropic SDK v1 and v2 test lanes for Messages routes (issue #1825):

  • tests/integration/sdk/anthropic/conftest.py (new): --sdk-version flag (auto/1.x/2.x) with installed-version lane detection and pytest.UsageError on mismatch, plus a session-scoped autouse scrub of ambient ANTHROPIC_* environment variables (including ANTHROPIC_CUSTOM_HEADERS, which otherwise injects a stray Authorization header) so wire-header assertions are deterministic. Re-exports the sdk-level shared subprocess helpers so from conftest import ... in existing suites keeps resolving to them.
  • tests/integration/sdk/anthropic/test_anthropic_sdk_compat.py (new): matrix suite exercising both pinned lanes against local recording backends across the two routes where the Anthropic SDK is the client — native /v1/messages passthrough (per-lane wire headers, JSON round-trip, SSE lifecycle, tool use) and Anthropic Messages → Chat Completions translation (no version/credential leakage, JSON + SSE + tool translation, sampling parameter mapping, and the route-owned 2026-10-21 constraints: empty vs active citations, document and thinking block rejection). No credentials, no external calls.
  • tests/integration/sdk/openai/test_selected_anthropic_chat_completions.py: recording backend now captures request headers; new test asserts the Anthropic backend wire headers on the OpenAI → Anthropic route (pinned anthropic-version: 2023-06-01, injected x-api-key, stripped caller authorization) — a genuine gap, since the route's client is the OpenAI SDK and does not vary on the Anthropic SDK axis.
  • Pins: floating anthropic>=0.40 headers pinned to anthropic==1.17.0 in five suites; the vLLM GPU acceptance suites keep anthropic==1.9.0 with the qualification rationale documented.
  • Build/CI/docs: make test-anthropic-sdk / -v1 / -v2 targets (aggregate stays complete; CI runs lanes as parallel steps in the anthropic-sdk job), lane instructions in docs/developing/getting-started.md, and SDK v1 vs v2 compatibility notes in docs/anthropic-messages.md.

Walkthrough

The PR adds pinned Anthropic SDK 1.x and 2.x compatibility lanes. Local integration tests exercise native Messages passthrough and Anthropic Messages-to-Chat Completions translation with recording backends. CI targets, test dependency pins, and documentation are updated.

Changes: Anthropic SDK compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure SDK version lanes
tests/integration/sdk/anthropic/conftest.py
Pytest accepts auto, 1.x, or 2.x, reports the detected SDK version and lane, rejects mismatched explicit selections, and removes environment variables prefixed with ANTHROPIC_.
Build the local test harness and cover native Messages
tests/integration/sdk/anthropic/test_anthropic_sdk_compat.py
Local recording backends and scripted responses support native Messages tests for SDK-specific headers, JSON and streaming responses, and tool exchanges.
Cover translated routes and wire headers
tests/integration/sdk/anthropic/test_anthropic_sdk_compat.py, tests/integration/sdk/openai/test_selected_anthropic_chat_completions.py
Tests cover Anthropic Messages-to-Chat Completions translation, sampling parameters, and rejected content blocks. The OpenAI SDK test records upstream headers and checks the Messages route, selected model, and injected API key.
Pin and run the compatibility lanes
Makefile, .github/workflows/integration.yaml, docs/anthropic-messages.md, docs/developing/getting-started.md, tests/integration/sdk/anthropic/*
Make and CI run SDK 1.x and 2.x with pinned versions. Existing test pins and documentation identify the 1.9.0 GPU acceptance baseline and provide lane commands.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #1825 is open and active, so its coding requirements apply. Requirement groups:

  1. Explicit, pinned SDK v1 and v2 lanes [#1825]. tests/integration/sdk/anthropic/conftest.py adds --sdk-version (auto, 1.x, 2.x). It detects the installed anthropic version and raises pytest.UsageError on a lane mismatch. Makefile and CI run the lanes with anthropic==1.17.0 and anthropic==2.3.0. Five floating suites are pinned to anthropic==1.17.0.

  2. Expected wire headers asserted at a recording backend [#1825]. test_anthropic_sdk_compat.py asserts per-lane native headers: 1.x sends anthropic-version 2023-06-01 and x-api-key; 2.x sends anthropic-version 2026-10-21 and Bearer authorization. Forbidden headers are also checked. The OpenAI suite asserts the Anthropic backend headers for the OpenAI-to-Anthropic direction: anthropic-version 2023-06-01, injected x-api-key, and no caller authorization.

  3. Native passthrough distinct from translated routes [#1825]. The compat suite separates TestNativePassthrough (messages-protocol.yaml) from translated-route classes (messages-to-openai.yaml).

  4. Representative JSON, streaming, and tool use [#1825]. The native route covers JSON round trip, SSE lifecycle, and tool-use round trip. The Messages-to-Chat direction is covered in the compat suite and in test_anthropic_messages_to_chat_completions.py. The OpenAI-to-Anthropic direction is covered by test_selected_anthropic_chat_completions.py: JSON, streaming with usage, tool-call round trip, provider errors, and disabled translation.

  5. Sampling and document/citation constraints for 2026-10-21 [#1825]. The compat suite docstring and the PR description state coverage of sampling parameter mapping, empty versus active citations, and document and thinking block rejection on the Messages-to-Chat route. The route owns this behavior. The assertion bodies lie beyond the readable evidence window, so their exact assertions are established only by the docstring, the AI summary, and the reported 13-passed results per lane.

  6. No credentials or external calls [#1825]. Local stub backends are used. conftest.py scrubs ANTHROPIC_* environment variables at session scope.

  7. GPU acceptance stays pinned and documented [#1825]. test_anthropic_messages_vllm.py and test_anthropic_web_search_vllm.py keep anthropic==1.9.0 with documented qualification rationale.

Open points that do not change the verdict:

  • The OpenAI-to-Anthropic direction is not run as a v1/v2 matrix. Its client is the OpenAI SDK, so the Anthropic SDK lane does not change its behavior. Its backend headers are asserted once.
  • The inline PEP 723 metadata in test_anthropic_sdk_compat.py lists unpinned anthropic. Lane pins apply through the Makefile, CI, and documented uv --with commands.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed areas map to #1825 or support its requirements:

  • conftest.py (new): lane selection, version detection, and ANTHROPIC_* environment scrub. Needed for pinned lanes and deterministic headers.
  • test_anthropic_sdk_compat.py (new): the v1/v2 matrix for native and translated routes.
  • test_selected_anthropic_chat_completions.py: header recording and the new wire-header test. This covers the OpenAI-to-Anthropic direction named in the issue.
  • Pins to anthropic==1.17.0 in five suites: addresses the floating-dependency problem described in the issue.
  • vLLM suites: documentation only. They keep the 1.9.0 pin with rationale.
  • Makefile, .github/workflows/integration.yaml: lane targets and parallel CI steps. Needed for reproducible lanes.
  • docs/anthropic-messages.md and docs/developing/getting-started.md: lane instructions and compatibility notes. Supporting documentation for the lanes.

No Rust code changed. No unrelated behavior change appears in the summaries.

Note: the environment scrub is autouse and session-scoped for the whole anthropic directory. It affects any existing suite in that directory that reads ANTHROPIC_* variables. The PR reports those suites as passing, but their exact env use was not inspected.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 10.42% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 48 functions across 10 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Use the qualified SDK versions in the documented commands.

These ranges can install different releases from the 1.17.0 and 2.3.0 releases used by Makefile and CI. The test script does not pin anthropic, and --sdk-version checks only the major version. A developer can therefore run a different test matrix while following instructions that say each lane is pinned. Use the exact versions from the lane targets. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Based on learnings: “dependencies—including dev/test dependencies—should be pinned to exact versions.”

Concur, minor. The repo isn't strict about exact pins (the OpenAI lanes document ranges and CI uses ranges), so I wouldn't treat this as a repo rule — but the inconsistency here is real: the Anthropic CI/Makefile pin exact while the docs use ranges, and --sdk-version compares only the major version, so a developer can run a different matrix under instructions that say "pinned". Exact pins in the docs are the cheap fix; a stronger one is to let the conftest verify the exact version too.

@nathan-weinberg Agreed. My repository-rule rationale was too broad. The finding remains valid as a minor reproducibility mismatch, not a pinning-policy violation.

Using anthropic==1.17.0 and anthropic==2.3.0 in the documented commands is sufficient to align them with Makefile and CI. Keep the existing --sdk-version arguments as major-version checks. Exact-version verification in conftest would be an optional improvement, not a requirement for this fix.

<title>Writing hook functions - pytest documentation</title>

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 months ago; This is because conftest.py files are discovered and loaded after builtin plugins, third-party plugins, and command-line plugins have already been initialized (including the execution of their `pytest_addoption()` hooks).

However, initial conftest files themselves can implement `pytest_addoption()` to add their own command-line options.
        default_value = pluginmanager.hook.pytest_config_file_default_value()
        parser.addoption(
            &quot;--config-file&quot;,

            default=default_value,
        )

Another plugin (installed via setuptools entry points, or via the `-p` command-line option) could then define the hook implementation to provide the default value:

    # contents of third_party_plugin.py

    def pytest_config_file_default_value():
        return &quot;config.yaml&quot;

Note

Hook implementations in conftest.py files are not available to other plugins during their `pytest_addoption()` execution. This is because conftest.py files are discovered and loaded after builtin plugins, third-party plugins, and command-line plugins have already been initialized (including the execution of their `pytest_addoption()` hooks).

However, initial conftest files themselves can implement `pytest_addoption()` to add their own command-line options. When an initial conftest is loaded, its `pytest_addoption()` hook will be called immediately.

During a plugin’s `pytest_addoption()` execution, only hook implementations from plugins that were loaded earlier will be available. These include:

  * builtin plugins

  * plugins explicitly loaded with `-p` on the command line

  * installed third-party plugins (via setuptools entry points)

  * plugins specified via the `PYTEST_PLUGINS` environment variable

#### Use in conftest plugins¶

This hook is only called for initial conftests.

### Initialization hooks¶

Initialization hooks called for plugins and `conftest.py` files.

pytest_addoption(parser, pluginmanager)[source]¶

Register argparse-style options and config-style config values, called once at the beginning of a test run.

Parameters:

  * parser – To add command line options, call `parser.addoption(...)`. To add config-file values call `parser.addini(...)`.

  * pluginmanager – The pytest plugin manager, which can be used to install `hookspec()`’s or `hookimpl()`’s and allow one plugin to call another plugin’s hooks to change how command line options are added.

Options can later be accessed through the `config` object, respectively:

  * `config.getoption(name)` to retrieve the value of a command line option.

  * `config.getini(name)` to retrieve a value read from a configuration file.

Only collect tests, don’t execute them. Shows which tests would be collected and run.

--pyargs¶

Try to interpret all arguments as Python packages. Useful for running tests of installed packages:

    pytest --pyargs pkg.testing

--ignore=PATH¶

Ignore path during collection (multi-allowed). Can be specified multiple times.

--ignore-glob=PATTERN¶

Ignore path pattern during collection (multi-allowed). Supports glob patterns.

--deselect=NODEID_PREFIX¶

Deselect item (via node id prefix) during collection (multi-allowed).

--confcutdir=DIR¶

Only load `conftest.py` files relative to specified directory.

--noconftest¶

Don’t load any `conftest.py` files.

--keep-duplicates¶

Keep duplicate tests. By default, pytest removes duplicate test items.

--collect-in-virtualenv¶

Don’t ignore tests in a local virtualenv directory. By default, pytest skips tests in virtualenv directories.

--continue-on-collection-errors¶

Force test execution even if collection errors occur.

--import-mode¶

Prepend/append to sys.path when importing test modules and conftest files.

  * `prepend` (default): prepend to sys.path

  * `append`: append to sys.path

  * `importlib`: use importlib to import test modules

See pytest import mechanisms and sys.path/PYTHONPATH for more information.

<title>Writing hook functions - pytest documentation</title>

L203: Now your hook is ready to be used. To register a function at the hook, other plugins or users must now simply define the function `pytest_my_hook` with the correct signature in their `conftest.py`.
L204:
L205: Example:
L206:
L207:     def pytest_my_hook(config):
L208:         &quot;&quot;&quot;
L209: Print all active hooks to the screen.
L210:         &quot;&quot;&quot;
L211:         print(config.hook)
L212:
L213: Note
L214: Unlike other hooks, the 【75†pytest_generate_tests】 hook is also discovered when defined inside a test module or test class. Other hooks must live in 【76†conftest.py plugins】 or external plugins. See 【77†How to parametrize fixtures and test functions】 and the 【78†Hooks】.
L215: ## Using hooks in pytest_addoption【79†¶】
L216:
L217: Occasionally, it is necessary to change the way in which command line options are defined by one plugin based on hooks in another plugin. For example, a plugin may expose a command line option for which another plugin needs to define the default value. The pluginmanager can be used to install and use hooks to accomplish this. The plugin would define and add the hooks and use pytest_addoption as follows:
L218:
L219:     # contents of hooks.py
L220: # Use firstresult=True because we only want one plugin to define this
L221:     # default value
L222:     @hookspec(firstresult=True)
L223:     def pytest_config_file_default_value():
L224:         &quot;&quot;&quot;Return the default value for the config file command line option.&quot;&quot;&quot;
L225:
L226:     # contents of myplugin.py
L227:
L228:     def pytest_addhooks(pluginmanager):
L229:         &quot;&quot;&quot;This example assumes the hooks are grouped in the &#39;hooks&#39; module.&quot;&quot;&quot;
L230:         from . import hooks
L231:
L232:         pluginmanager.add_hookspecs(hooks)
L233:     def pytest_addoption(parser, pluginmanager):
L234:         default_value = pluginmanager.hook.pytest_config_file_default_value()
L235:         parser.addoption(
L236:             &quot;--config-file&quot;,
L237: help=&quot;Config file to use, defaults to %(default)s&quot;,
L238:             default=default_value,
L239:         )
L240:
L241: Another plugin (installed via setuptools entry points, or via the `-p` command-line option) could then define the hook implementation to provide the default value:
L242:
L243:     # contents of third_party_plugin.py
L244:     def pytest_config_file_default_value():
L245:         return &quot;config.yaml&quot;
L246:
L247: Note
L248:
L249: Hook implementations in conftest.py files are not available to other plugins during their `pytest_addoption()` execution. This is because conftest.py files are discovered and loaded after builtin plugins, third-party plugins, and command-line plugins have already been initialized (including the execution of their `pytest_addoption()` hooks).
L250: However, 【80†initial conftest files】 themselves can implement `pytest_addoption()` to add their own command-line options. When an initial conftest is loaded, its `pytest_addoption()` hook will be called immediately.
L251:
L252: During a plugin’s `pytest_addoption()` execution, only hook implementations from plugins that were loaded earlier will be available. These include:
L253:
L254:   * builtin plugins
L255:
L256: * plugins explicitly loaded with `-p` on the command line
L257: * installed third-party plugins (via setuptools entry points)
L258:
L259: * plugins specified via the `PYTEST_PLUGINS` environment variable
L260:
L261: See 【80†Plugin discovery order at tool startup】 for the complete plugin discovery order.
L262: ## Optionally using hooks from 3rd party plugins【81†¶】
L263:
L264: Using new hooks from plugins as explained above might be a little tricky because of the stan…[truncated]</excerpt>

Use a distinct option name for the Anthropic SDK lane.

tests/integration/sdk/openai/conftest.py already registers --sdk-version. A pytest run that collects both SDK directories can load both conftests and register the same option twice, which can fail during pytest setup. Use a distinct Anthropic option, such as --anthropic-sdk-version, and update its config.getoption(...) call and Anthropic test commands.

The current Makefile and CI commands run individual SDK test files, so they do not currently trigger the combined-directory case.

Concur — confirmed as a hard failure:

$ pytest tests/integration/sdk
ValueError: option names {'--sdk-version'} already added

main collects the whole tree cleanly (455 tests with deps installed), so this is a regression. Your caveat is right that current CI/Makefile invocations don't trigger it. Renaming to --anthropic-sdk-version (or hoisting the option into tests/integration/sdk/conftest.py) fixes it; note the two registrations also disagree on choices (auto|2.x|3.x vs auto|1.x|2.x).

@nathan-weinberg Your reproduction confirms a collection regression, not just a potential conflict.

The different choices favor separate options. Renaming the Anthropic option to --anthropic-sdk-version preserves independent SDK lane selection. Hoisting one shared option would also require reconciling both providers’ lane validation.

Update the Anthropic config.getoption(...) call, Makefile, CI commands, and documentation with the rename. Then check whole-tree collection with dependencies installed:

pytest --collect-only tests/integration/sdk

# Find ANTHROPIC_* env reads in the suites that share this conftest.
rg -n -C2 'ANTHROPIC_[A-Z_]+' tests/integration/sdk/anthropic tests/integration/sdk/conftest.py Makefile .github/workflows/integration.yaml

Length of output: 2015

Restore the scrubbed ANTHROPIC_* variables when the session ends.

The autouse session fixture deletes ANTHROPIC_* variables from os.environ and never restores them. The deletion persists for the rest of the pytest process. Code that runs later in that process and reads these variables at runtime, including SDK clients built without an explicit key, sees them unset. Import-time and collection-time reads still see the original values.

Wrap the scrub in pytest.MonkeyPatch.context(). delenv records each original value, and the context exit restores it.

Concur in principle, low priority. I checked every suite in the directory: all construct clients with explicit arguments, and test_anthropic_messages_llmkatan.py reads its env at import time, so nothing currently reads ANTHROPIC_* after the fixture runs. MonkeyPatch.context() is the right shape for future-proofing. The Ruff ANN202 sub-note can be disregarded — the repo has no Ruff configuration, so it reflects CodeRabbit's defaults rather than project policy.

Import the shared subprocess helpers instead of redefining them.

_free_port, _find_binary and _wait_for_proxy duplicate free_port, find_binary and wait_for_proxy in tests/integration/sdk/conftest.py. The new tests/integration/sdk/anthropic/conftest.py re-exports those helpers for the suites in this directory. The copies have already diverged: the shared find_binary also checks target/debug/praxis and target/release/praxis. Two copies of the binary lookup will keep drifting.

Import the helpers, as test_vertex_anthropic.py does:

from conftest import find_binary as _find_binary
from conftest import free_port as _free_port
from conftest import wait_for_proxy as _wait_for_proxy

The anthropic conftest loads when pytest runs this file. It also loads when the file runs as a script, because the script's directory is sys.path[0] and pytest.main then collects it.

Concur. The drift is real: the local _find_binary drops the target/debug/praxis and target/release/praxis candidates that tests/integration/sdk/conftest.py supports. The new conftest already re-exports find_binary/free_port/wait_for_proxy, so importing them here is a three-line change.

Clean up all fixture resources when startup fails.

native_client and translated_client create the backend and temporary config before installing cleanup. If _start_proxy fails, the backend, config file, and proxy child are not fully cleaned up. _start_proxy only sends SIGINT; it does not wait or kill the child. _stop_backend calls shutdown() but not server_close(), so it does not close the listening socket.

Concur, low priority. Both specifics check out: _stop_backend never calls server_close(), and _start_proxy sends SIGINT without reaping on the failure path. The ExitStack callback ordering in the proposal is correct although the impact is limited to test hygiene.

Review

Solid, correctly scoped test PR — the lane premise is real and both lanes pass. One substantive gap and one real regression; the rest is small.

Verified locally (against a built target/debug/praxis-ai)

  • --sdk-version=1.x with anthropic==1.17.0 — 13 passed
  • --sdk-version=2.x with anthropic==2.3.0 — 13 passed
  • test_anthropic_messages_to_chat_completions.py 30 passed, test_anthropic_web_search.py 7 passed, test_selected_anthropic_chat_completions.py 8 passed
  • test_anthropic_error_formatter.py errors reproduce identically on main with this binary (it needs openai-all), so that is not a regression from this PR
  • Pins are current: 1.17.0 is the latest 1.x, 2.3.0 the latest 2.x
  • The v2 wire defaults documented in docs/anthropic-messages.md (2026-10-21, Authorization: Bearer) are confirmed on the wire
  • The example-config drift assertions in _retarget_example hold

Findings

  1. The translated-route credential assertion is vacuous in the v2 lane (inline on test_anthropic_sdk_compat.py) — under SDK v2 the caller's Authorization: Bearer <key> reaches the Chat Completions backend, and the test still passes because it only checks x-api-key.
  2. --sdk-version collides with the OpenAI conftest (inline on conftest.py) — confirmed hard failure when both SDK directories are collected; main collects the whole tree cleanly.
  3. The "parallel steps" / "CI uses the make targets" claims are inaccurate (inline on docs/anthropic-messages.md); the same wording appears in getting-started.md and the Makefile comment.

On the five CodeRabbit comments

  • exact pins in the docs — concur, minor (the repo does mix ranges, so it isn't a hard rule, but Anthropic CI pins exact while the docs don't, and the lane check is major-only)
  • distinct option name — concur (see finding 2)
  • restore scrubbed ANTHROPIC_* env — concur, low priority; no current suite reads those variables after the fixture runs, so it is future-proofing. The Ruff ANN202 sub-note can be ignored — the repo has no Ruff configuration
  • import the shared helpers — concur; the local _find_binary loses the praxis binary candidates
  • fixture cleanup on startup failure — concur, low priority (test-only hygiene)

The v2 lane does not actually assert credential isolation.

For SDK 2.x the credential is Authorization: Bearer, not x-api-key, so this assertion is vacuous in the v2 lane. Instrumenting the recording backend shows the header is forwarded rather than stripped:

  • v1: x-api-key and anthropic-version absent (stripped)
  • v2: authorization: Bearer test-key present on the Chat Completions backend

apis/src/anthropic/messages_to_chat_completions/mod.rs:284-288 removes anthropic-version, x-api-key and accept-encoding, but not authorization. This is the exact failure mode the suite sets out to catch (the PR description claims "no version/credential leakage" on this route).

Two resolutions, but the choice should be deliberate:

  • assert authorization is absent (it fails today) and extend the filter's strip list — symmetric with openai_chat_completions_to_anthropic, which strips the caller's authorization; or
  • if credential isolation is meant to be operator-config-owned (per docs/anthropic-messages.md, "Committed example with credential isolation"), add the strip to the shipped messages-to-openai.yaml and assert that documented guarantee instead.

Minimum that stops the silent regression: assert the caller's key specifically, e.g. assert headers.get("authorization") != "Bearer test-key" for the v2 lane.

This collides with the OpenAI conftest's --sdk-version.

tests/integration/sdk/openai/conftest.py:10 already registers --sdk-version. Verified on this branch:

main collects the whole tree cleanly (455 tests with the deps installed), so this is a regression. CI and the Makefile only run individual files today, so the pipeline is unaffected — but any combined-directory run now aborts, and the two registrations also disagree on choices (auto|2.x|3.x vs auto|1.x|2.x).

Renaming to --anthropic-sdk-version (with the Makefile/CI/docs updates) or hoisting the option into tests/integration/sdk/conftest.py both fix it.

The workflow doesn't do this: integration.yaml runs the two lanes as sequential run: steps in one job and never invokes make test-anthropic-sdk-v1/-v2. The same claim appears in docs/developing/getting-started.md ("the parallel test-anthropic-sdk-v1 and test-anthropic-sdk-v2 targets") and in the Makefile comment near line 291 ("CI splits the lanes into the two parallel subtargets below"), which additionally says each lane builds the binary itself — CI builds once in the preceding step.

Two options: have the workflow call the make targets (the pattern used by make test-schema and make test-integration-core) so there is one source of truth, or reword all three places.
