Raise MalformedJSON for malformed negative numbers - #26
complete_num() (the slow completion path) assumed a leading - is followed by a digit, but only complete_any guards the bare-- case. A - followed by any non-digit — lowercase -inf, -.5, -e3 (all malformed JSON, all plausible LLM stream fragments) — read json_string[-1] via the backward truncation loop and returned an empty completion ("", ""), so parse_json failed downstream with a confusing Expecting value from json.loads(''). -.5 and -e3 were worse: returned as complete numbers unchanged. Meanwhile --/-e already raised MalformedJSON — three behaviors for the same family of malformed input.
Add a sign guard at the top of complete_num: a - not followed by a digit raises MalformedJSON, consistent with --/-e and with the documented error contract. Legitimate negative numbers (-0, -1.5) and -Infinity (handled at dispatch) are unaffected; the fast path reaches the same guard through _fix.
Tests
test_error_negative_number_prefix: four malformed cases (-x, -inf, -.5, -e3) raise MalformedJSON; three valid controls (-0, -1.5, -Infinity) keep their values. The new cases fail on main (JSONDecodeError leakage / silent passthrough) and pass with the change.
Validation
tests/test_examples.py + tests/test_hypotheses.py: 13 passed (Python 3.12.10), re-verified on 3.11.16.
complete_num's backward truncation loop has no lower bound: for input
starting with '-' followed by a non-number character (e.g. '-inf', '-x'),
the loop walks past index 0, reads json_string[-1] from the end of the
string, and yields an empty completion. parse_json then fails with a
confusing bare JSONDecodeError ('Expecting value') instead of the
library's documented MalformedJSON. Inputs like '-.5' / '-e3' were even
returned unchanged as if they were complete numbers.
Guard the sign: raise MalformedJSON when '-' is not followed by a digit.
'-Infinity' is dispatched before complete_num, so it is unaffected, and
every valid negative number keeps its behavior.
complete_num() now raises MalformedJSON when - is not followed by an ASCII digit. -Infinity remains handled separately.
fix_fast() validates malformed negative-number atoms in closed collections and skips matches inside strings.
Tests cover malformed prefixes and valid negative-number controls, including closed collections on fast and standard paths.
Validation
Test and CI results: not available.
complete_num now raises MalformedJSON when a leading minus sign is followed by a non-digit. fix_fast checks eligible minus signs outside closed strings and validates the corresponding atoms before returning the input unchanged. Tests cover malformed and valid negative values, including values in closed collections and -Infinity.
Large valid collections containing many negative infinities can be slow to parse. Address the quadratic copying before merging.

**Nested malformed numbers leak parser errors**
When a malformed negative number appears inside an otherwise closed collection, such as `[-x]`, `fix_fast` returns a closed collection unchanged without calling `_fix`, so `parse_json` passes a malformed negative number inside it to `json.loads` and leaks a plain `JSONDecodeError` instead of `MalformedJSON`.
Ensure the fast path validates malformed negative numbers in completed collections before returning them unchanged.
</issue_to_address>
fix_fast returned a completed collection without calling _fix, so a
malformed negative number inside it reached json.loads and leaked a
plain JSONDecodeError instead of MalformedJSON.
When the collection closes, validate any minus-prefixed atom outside
strings through the existing _fix path; valid negative values and
strings containing '-' remain untouched.
Addressed in bbdad65. Completed collections now validate minus-prefixed atoms outside strings through the existing _fix path before the fast-path return, so [-x] and {"a": -x} raise MalformedJSON instead of leaking json.JSONDecodeError.
Added regression coverage for malformed atoms in arrays and objects on both fast and slow paths, plus valid negative-number controls. The first implementation accidentally matched hyphens inside strings; the final version only checks atoms outside the string ranges discovered by the existing scan. Full test_examples.py + test_hypotheses.py: 14 passed; black and isort pass.

- Line 64: Update the negative-number lookahead in the regex used by the for
loop to recognize only ASCII digits with [0-9], matching the digit contract used
by complete_num so malformed prefixes such as a minus followed by an
Arabic-Indic digit take the same validation path.
- Around line 65-66: Update fix_fast to avoid rescanning string_ranges from the
beginning for each hyphen match: advance a current-range cursor as matches are
processed. For matches outside strings, validate only the bounded atom needed by
_fix rather than passing the remaining JSON suffix, preserving existing
recognition and correction behavior.

Use the same ASCII digit contract as complete_num so non-ASCII digits are
rejected consistently on the fast path, and walk the string ranges once
while validating only the bounded atom instead of the remaining suffix.
The fast-path lookahead now uses ASCII [0-9], matching complete_num; a minus followed by an Arabic-Indic digit is rejected as MalformedJSON instead of leaking JSONDecodeError.
Closed collections track string ranges while scanning and advance a current-range cursor over them, then validate only the bounded atom instead of the remaining suffix. This keeps the closed-collection check linear in the input size.
New regression coverage includes [-١] and {"a": -١} on both paths. test_examples.py + test_hypotheses.py: 14 passed; black and isort pass.
