Code of Conduct

Our pledge

We as members, contributors and maintainers pledge to make participation in our community a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body size, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, caste, colour, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.

We pledge to act and interact in ways that contribute to an open, welcoming, diverse, inclusive and healthy community.

Our standards

Examples of behaviour that contributes to a positive environment:

  • Demonstrating empathy and kindness toward other people
  • Being respectful of differing opinions, viewpoints and experiences
  • Giving and gracefully accepting constructive feedback
  • Accepting responsibility, apologising to those affected by our mistakes, and learning from the experience
  • Focusing on what is best for the community as a whole

Examples of unacceptable behaviour:

  • Sexualised language or imagery, and sexual attention or advances of any kind
  • Trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
  • Public or private harassment
  • Publishing others' private information — physical or email address — without their explicit permission
  • Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting

Standards specific to this project

This community works on tooling over records involving real victims of sexual abuse, and real people who were never charged with anything. The following are treated as conduct violations, not merely as bad contributions:

  • Accusing named individuals. Do not use issues, pull requests, discussions or commit messages to assert that a person in the data is guilty of anything. Inclusion in the dataset is not an accusation, and this community does not make it into one.
  • Targeting people named in records. Do not post contact details, home or work addresses, family information, or coordinate contact with anyone appearing in the data.
  • Identifying victims. Do not name, speculate about, or attempt to de-anonymise victims, including those anonymised in the source records.
  • Recruiting for harassment. Do not use this project's spaces to organise pressure campaigns against any individual.

These apply regardless of whether a claim is true, widely reported, or motivated by good intentions.

Enforcement responsibilities

Maintainers are responsible for clarifying and enforcing these standards and will take appropriate and fair corrective action in response to any behaviour they deem inappropriate, threatening, offensive or harmful.

Maintainers have the right and responsibility to remove, edit or reject comments, commits, code, issues and other contributions not aligned to this Code of Conduct, and will communicate reasons for moderation decisions when appropriate.

Scope

This Code of Conduct applies within all community spaces, and also applies when an individual is officially representing the community in public spaces.

Reporting

Report abusive, harassing or otherwise unacceptable behaviour privately to the maintainers — use the contact address on the maintainer's GitHub profile, or GitHub's Report content control on the offending item.

If a report concerns information published about a living person, say so in the subject line; those are handled first.

All complaints will be reviewed and investigated promptly and fairly. Maintainers are obligated to respect the privacy and security of the reporter.

Enforcement guidelines

1. Correction — Community impact: inappropriate language or unprofessional behaviour. Consequence: a private written warning with clarity about the violation, and possibly a public apology.

2. Warning — Community impact: a violation through a single incident or series of actions. Consequence: a warning with consequences for continued behaviour, and no interaction with those involved for a specified period.

3. Temporary ban — Community impact: a serious violation of community standards. Consequence: a temporary ban from any interaction with the community.

4. Permanent ban — Community impact: demonstrating a pattern of violation, harassment of an individual, or aggression toward classes of individuals. Consequence: a permanent ban from public interaction within the community.

Publishing personal information about, or organising harassment of, anyone named in the records ordinarily starts at level 3 or 4 rather than level 1.
