feat: move an archive to the Trash once it is extracted - #354
hertza-haeon wants to merge 10 commits into
Conversation
Before: every Extract button in an archive window asked where to extract, even when the answer is always "next to the archive". Finder's Extract Here never asks. Now: a new setting, Settings ▸ General ▸ "Extract next to the archive" (off by default). With it on, the window's Extract archive, Extract selected and the list's Extract… extract straight into the archive's own folder, without a dialog. - "Close the window afterwards", a checkbox under it, closes the window once the whole archive has been extracted next to it (never while it has unsaved changes). - If MacPacker isn't allowed into that folder yet, it asks for access once, as Extract Here does. If that is refused, it asks where to extract, as before. - The result is selected in Finder when the extraction is done, if no Finder window is open. If one is open, nothing more opens: Finder can only select something in an open window when it sits right in that window's folder, and otherwise opens a second window. The result simply appears in the window that is there. - File ▸ Extract archive (⌘E) and Extract selected (⌥⌘E). When the setting is off, the toolbar, the list's menu and these shortcuts all ask with the same folder dialog, now a sheet on the window. - Quick Look's Extract buttons follow the setting too. The preview isn't allowed to write next to the archive, so it asks the app to do it, through MacPacker's url scheme, as the Finder extension does. If the app can't be reached, the preview asks where to extract. For review: the new url action is extractNextToArchive: one archive, whole or only the entries named by their paths in it, accepted only when the target is the archive's own folder. It is separate from Finder's extractHere so that its result is selected the same way as the window's. The setting is kept in the app group, like smartExtraction, for the preview to read. ArchiveState.extract(to:smart:) and extract(items:to:smart:) now return their task, whose value says how the extraction ended (@discardableResult, so existing callers don't change). ExtractedItems finds what an extraction added to its folder, leaving out hidden files such as a .DS_Store Finder writes meanwhile.

Before: "Close the window afterwards" closed the window once an extraction was done unless it had unsaved changes. Files dragged into the archive while it ran, and still being read, didn't count yet as changes, so the window could close and drop them. Separately, when an extraction went over items that were already there, a hidden one such as .DS_Store could still be picked for selecting in Finder. Now: - The window stays open while added files are still being read (ArchiveState.isAddingItems), as it does with unsaved changes. - Hidden names are left out of what is selected, in every case.

Propagate SWC full-extraction errors.
ArchiveSwcEngine.extract(_:to:passwordResolver:) catches decompression errors, logs them, and returns normally. It also ignores a failed FileManager.default.createFile call. ArchiveExtractor.extractAll therefore completes normally, so ArchiveState.extract(to:smart:) returns .done even when the LZ4 output is incomplete. With the Trash setting enabled, ExtractionFollowUp.trashIfAsked can then move the source archive to the Trash.
The full-extraction API is async throws; this is not an intentional skipped-entry success result.

Right that this can happen, but it is a separate bug, not one this PR adds: ArchiveSwcEngine.extract(_:to:passwordResolver:) swallowed decompression and write errors before this PR and is unchanged here, so a failed whole-archive SWC extraction already reports success today. It needs its own fix with a failing test, which starts with a broken .swc sample in MacPacker-TestArchives, so it stays out of this PR.

@hertza-haeon Thanks for clarifying the scope. The SWC error handling is a pre-existing bug, not a change introduced by this PR. A separate fix with a failing test is appropriate.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for error propagation and a regression test using a broken .swc sample in MacPacker-TestArchives?

Learning: In MacPacker, a fix for swallowed full-extraction errors in Modules/Sources/Core/Engine/ArchiveSwcEngine.swift, in ArchiveSwcEngine.extract(_:to:passwordResolver:), should include a failing regression test backed by a broken .swc sample in MacPacker-TestArchives.

Before: the entries of an extractNextToArchive link are encoded twice. One that survived the first decoding but not the second was silently dropped. If that left no entries, the link meant "the whole archive", so a garbled request extracted everything, and could then move the archive to the Trash when that setting is on (sarensw#354). Now: an entry that does not decode refuses the whole link (AppUrl.ParseError.invalidItems). Any app can send these links, so refusing is the safe answer.

Before: a link with an entry list that was there but empty (items= or items=,), or had an empty entry in it, parsed as "no entries", which means the whole archive. A malformed selection could still extract everything. Now: only a link without an entry list asks for the whole archive. An empty list, or an empty entry in it, refuses the link (AppUrl.ParseError.invalidItems), like an entry that doesn't decode.
Before: Cancel stops an extraction through the engine. If it came just as the engine finished, or the engine never looked for it, the extraction still ended as done. "Close the window afterwards", and Move to Trash (sarensw#354), then acted as if the user hadn't cancelled. Now: both extractions check for a cancel once the engine is through, before they say they are done (Task.checkCancellation), and end as cancelled when there was one. sarensw#339 checks the same before it puts the result in place. The test uses a stand-in engine that ignores Cancel and is released only after the cancel, so the moment is controlled rather than left to timing.
Before: after extracting an archive, it had to be found in Finder and moved to the Trash by hand. Now: a new setting, Settings ▸ General ▸ "Move to Trash after extraction" (off by default). When the whole archive has been extracted successfully, MacPacker moves it to the Trash, without asking: the Trash is the way back. This works from the archive window's Extract archive, from Finder's Extract actions, and from Quick Look's Extract archive when it extracts next to the archive. - Only after a complete, successful extraction of the whole archive: never after a cancelled or failed one, never after Extract selected (only part of the archive), and never while the window has unsaved changes. - Every part of a split archive goes too: x.z01, x.z02 and x.zip of a spanned zip; x.zip.001, x.zip.002 … of a numbered set, but not a separate x.zip next to them; RAR's x.part1.rar … and x.rar, x.r00 …. - The archive window closes, since its archive is in the Trash. - Finder's "Put Back" isn't offered for these files. That is how macOS treats any app that moves files to the Trash itself, the App Store-safe way (FileManager.trashItem). For review: the parts of a split archive are found by name, using the catalog's split types plus RAR's two schemes (ArchiveFiles).
Before: the archive went to the Trash after a finished extraction unless its window had unsaved changes. Files dragged into the archive while it ran, and still being read, didn't count yet as changes, so the archive could go to the Trash with them on their way into it. Now: it stays while added files are still being read (ArchiveState.isAddingItems), as it does with unsaved changes.
Before: two cases could leave part of a split archive in the Trash and part in its folder, useless in both places: - If the archive's own file couldn't be moved to the Trash, its other volumes still were. - If the archive's folder couldn't be read, its other volumes couldn't be found, and the opened file went to the Trash alone. Now: - The archive's own file goes first; if it can't, nothing moves. - When the folder can't be read, ArchiveState.filesOnDisk() names no files at all, so nothing moves either.
Before: before moving the archive to the Trash, MacPacker may have to ask for access to its folder, which can show a panel and wait. While it waited, the same window could open another archive or start adding files, and MacPacker then moved whatever the window held by then. Now: once access is granted, it checks again that the window still shows the same archive, with no unsaved changes and nothing being added. If anything changed, the archive stays where it is.

About the review note outside the diff ( |
Before: this pull request added its changelog items to the 1.1.0 block of Config/products/macpacker.json. 1.1.0 was released on 19 October, so that block takes no new items. Now: macpacker.json is as on main. The full items are in the pull request description, for a new version block, as AGENTS.md asks. The items of sarensw#353, which this builds on, come out too, as they do in sarensw#353.
What & why
Before: after extracting an archive, you had to find it in Finder and move it to the Trash yourself.
Now: a new setting, Settings ▸ General ▸ "Move to Trash after extraction" (off by default). When the whole archive has been extracted successfully, MacPacker moves it to the Trash, without asking — the Trash is the way back. This works from the archive window's Extract archive, from Finder's Extract actions, and from Quick Look's Extract archive when it extracts next to the archive.
x.z01,x.z02andx.zipof a spanned zip;x.zip.001,x.zip.002… of a numbered set, but not a separatex.zipnext to them; RAR'sx.part1.rar… andx.rar,x.r00….FileManager.trashItem).Builds on #353, which it hooks into; until that one is merged, #353's commit shows here too — only the last commit is this one. #330 does this for Finder's actions; #350 lists the differences.
For review: the parts of a split archive are found by name, using the catalog's split types plus RAR's two schemes (
ArchiveFiles). New strings (settingsTrashArchiveAfterExtractionand its hint) use the catalog's symbol keys, as since #270.Part of #350.
How it was verified
ArchiveFilesTests): a plain archive is just its own file; a spanned zip is every part plus its.zip; a numbered set leaves a separate archive of the same name alone; RAR's parts go together in both schemes; names match whatever their case; an opened archive knows its files, also a spanned zip opened at its last part; an archive never saved has none.swift test --package-path Modulespasses, all 668 tests; unsigned Release (MacPacker) and Release Store (MacPacker Store) builds, both universal, passscripts/check-architectures.sh.Screenshots — Settings ▸ General before / after ("Move to Trash after extraction").
The settings screenshots come from a build with all of these pull requests; this one adds only “Move to Trash after extraction”.
