What & why

Before: when an extracted item had the same name as something already in the destination:

  • Extract archive overwrote it without asking: a file there was deleted for good, and a folder there was extracted into, mixing old and new files (MacPacker is overwriting extracted files without warning #140).
  • Extract selected failed halfway: the item could not be moved into place, and whatever had been moved before it stayed.

Now: a new setting, Settings ▸ General ▸ "If an item already exists", decides for both:

  • Keep both (the default): the new item gets a free name next to the old one, which is left untouched — photo (2).jpg, photos (2), the way smart extraction already names its folder.
  • Replace: what Extract archive did until now — files are replaced, folders are extracted into, and what is replaced is deleted.
  • Replace, old one to Trash: the same, but every replaced file goes to the Trash under its own name. Where there is no Trash (a network volume, for instance), it stays next to its replacement under a free name, so nothing is ever lost.

Extract selected now places all its items or, if something goes wrong, none of them. With Keep both, Finder's Extract to "name" also gets a free folder name, which fixes the empty result in #317. Quick Look's own extractions follow the setting too.

#140 asks for a question per file, as in Total Commander. This is a setting instead, which also suits Finder's actions, where nobody is there to answer; a question could be added later.

Builds on #339 (ExtractionStaging); until that one is merged, its commits show here too — only the last commit is this one.

For review: one routine now places the result for both extractions, ExtractionStaging.place (the commit of #339, with the choice added). The setting is kept in the app group, like smartExtraction, so the preview can read it. Without the setting handed in, Core keeps replacing and ArchiveExtractor keeps both, so nothing loses anything it didn't lose before. New strings (settingsNameClash, its three choices and its hint) use the catalog's symbol keys, as since #270.

Part of #350.

How it was verified

  • Tests (NameClashTests): free names are numbered before a file's extension and don't collide with each other; a broken link counts as taken; unset means Keep both; Keep both leaves what is there alone; Replace deletes what it replaces; Replace, old one to Trash sends replaced files there under their own names and keeps them when there is no Trash; Extract archive keeps both; Extract selected onto a taken name, which failed before, now does what the setting says (Keep both and Replace).
  • CI, run locally: swift test --package-path Modules passes, all 691 tests; unsigned Release (MacPacker) and Release Store (MacPacker Store) builds, both universal, pass scripts/check-architectures.sh.
  • Tried in a Debug build: extracting the same archive twice into one folder gives name (2); Replace and Replace, old one to Trash do what they say; Extract selected onto a taken name works.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Choose how extraction handles name conflicts: keep both items with automatic numbering, replace existing content, or move replaced items to Trash.
    • View extraction progress in Finder.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Cancelled or failed extractions no longer leave behind incomplete files or folders.
    • Fixed “Extract Selected” when an item with the same name already exists.

"Extract archive", Finder's three extract actions and Quick Look's
extract button handed the destination itself to the engine. A run that
was cancelled, or met a damaged entry, left what it had written by then
in the destination, together with the container folder smart extraction
had made for it.

The engine now writes into a work folder inside the destination, which
is moved into place once the extraction has succeeded and removed
otherwise. It is on the destination's own volume, so putting the result
in place is a rename, and the access the app already holds covers it.

The work folder is a placeholder Finder can show: `<archive>.macpack`,
declared as a package type so it appears as one item, dimmed the way
Finder dims what it is still copying, with the extraction's progress
published on it.

A finished extraction ends up where it did before: same layout, same
container naming, same overwriting of what is already there. What
could not be put in place (a file where a folder goes, an item that
cannot be written) now fails before anything has moved.

"Extract selected" already went through a temp folder; it no longer
leaves the empty container folder behind when it does not finish.
… is whole

Two points from the review of this pull request.

A cancel that arrived as the engine finished was ignored: the engine had
nothing left to stop and returned normally, so the result was put in
place and the run reported as done. The run is now checked for
cancellation before anything of it is committed.

Where an extracted file replaces one that sits behind a link on another
volume, the old file was removed before the new one had been copied
across, so a copy that failed left neither. The new file is now copied
beside the old one and takes its place in a single rename.
…lled "Extract to"

Two more points from the review of this pull request.

Extracting over items that are already there puts the result in place
step by step. A step that failed after earlier ones had succeeded left
the destination partly updated, and a file already replaced did not
come back. Every step can now be taken back, and is when a later one
fails: a replaced file changes places with its replacement (or is kept
beside itself where the volume cannot do that), and an item that was
moved in goes back.

Finder's Extract to "name" created its folder before extracting, so a
cancelled run left it behind, empty. The extraction now makes that
folder itself, and takes it back with a run that does not finish.
…tovers

# Conflicts:
#	Config/products/macpacker.json
Before: when an extracted item had the same name as something already in
the destination, Extract archive overwrote it without asking: a file
there was deleted for good, and a folder there was extracted into,
mixing old and new files (sarensw#140). Extract selected failed halfway: the
item could not be moved into place, and whatever had been moved before
it stayed.

Now: a new setting, Settings ▸ General ▸ "If an item already exists",
decides for both:

- Keep both (the default): the new item gets a free name next to the old
one, which is left untouched: "photo (2).jpg", "photos (2)", the way
smart extraction already names its folder.
- Replace: what Extract archive did until now. Files are replaced,
folders are extracted into, and what is replaced is deleted.
- Replace, old one to Trash: the same, but every replaced file goes to
the Trash under its own name. Where there is no Trash (a network
volume, for instance), it stays next to its replacement under a free
name, so nothing is ever lost.

Extract selected now places all its items or, if something goes wrong,
none of them. With Keep both, Finder's Extract to "name" also gets a
free folder name, which fixes the empty result in sarensw#317. Quick Look's own
extractions follow the setting too.

For review: one routine now places the result for both extractions,
ExtractionStaging.place (the commit of sarensw#339, with the choice added). The
setting is kept in the app group, like smartExtraction, for the preview
to read. Without the setting handed in, Core keeps replacing and
ArchiveExtractor keeps both, so nothing loses anything it didn't lose
before.

Builds on sarensw#339 (ExtractionStaging).

📝 Walkthrough

MacPacker adds configurable handling for extraction name conflicts. Extraction output is staged in a temporary folder before it is committed to the destination. The changes also add Finder progress reporting and cleanup for cancelled or failed extraction runs.

The new setting needs a localization correction before release; its current catalog entries do not follow the project’s translation workflow. No extraction data-loss risk was established by the investigated fallback.

Before: this pull request added its changelog items to the 1.1.0 block
of Config/products/macpacker.json. 1.1.0 was released on 19 October, so
that block takes no new items.

Now: macpacker.json is as on main. The full items are in the pull
request description, for a new version block, as AGENTS.md asks.

The items of sarensw#339, which this builds on, come out too, as they do in
