What & why

Before: in Finder's list view you can expand a folder and select items inside it. MacPacker's Finder actions then put their result in the wrong place: one level up, in the folder the Finder window shows, instead of next to the selected items. For example, with a Finder window on Downloads and its "Demo" folder expanded, Extract Here on Demo/photos.zip put photos in Downloads. The actions' own descriptions say otherwise: "extracts every selected archive next to it", "creates the archive next to the selected files".

Selecting the result afterwards also opened a second Finder window, because Finder can only select something in an open window when it sits right in that window's folder.

Now:

  • Extract Here and Extract to "name" extract each archive next to itself.
  • Compress to "name" puts the archive in the folder the selected items are in, and names it after that folder when there are several items. The Finder menu's label follows the same rule, so it still names the file that is made. Compress Each Item Separately and Compress Contents put each zip next to its item.
  • Extract To… opens its folder dialog next to the archive, instead of in the window's folder.
  • After any of these, the result is selected only when it sits in the window's own folder, so no second Finder window opens. A result inside an expanded folder simply appears there.

Nothing new is asked: the access MacPacker holds for the window's folder also covers the folders expanded in it.

For review: the window's folder comes from FIFinderSyncController.targetedURL(). AppUrl.folder(of:) gives an item's own folder; AppUrl.folderOfFiles gives the deepest folder holding all of them, for Compress to "name"; AppUrl.itemsToSelect keeps only what landed in the window's folder. Extract To… now asks for read access only to archive folders the chosen folder doesn't contain. Starts from main and stands alone. No new strings.

Part of #350.

How it was verified

  • Tests (AppUrlTests): with the Finder window on Downloads and Demo expanded, an archive in each is extracted next to itself, not both into Downloads; only what lands in the window's own folder is selected; items compressed together go to the deepest folder that holds them all — Demo when all are in it, Downloads when some are not.
  • CI, run locally: swift test --package-path Modules passes, all 655 tests; unsigned Release (MacPacker) and Release Store (MacPacker Store) builds, both universal, pass scripts/check-architectures.sh.
  • Tried in a Debug build, in list view with a folder expanded: Extract Here and Extract to "name" on an archive inside it put the result next to the archive, and no second Finder window opens; nor does Extract To… into that folder, whose dialog opens there. Compressing two items inside that folder makes the archive there, named after it as the Finder menu said, again with no second window.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed “Extract Here” so each archive’s contents are extracted into its own folder.
    • Compression and extraction now place results in the relevant Finder window or alongside the source items, rather than using an unrelated folder.
    • When choosing an extraction destination, the folder picker now opens near the first archive.
    • Finder selects only results located in the current window’s folder and does not activate when there are no matching items to select.

Before: in Finder's list view, a folder can be expanded and items
selected inside it. MacPacker's Finder actions then put their result one
level up, in the folder the Finder window shows, instead of next to the
selected items. With a Finder window on Downloads and its Demo folder
expanded, Extract Here on Demo/photos.zip put photos in Downloads,
against the actions' own descriptions ("extracts every selected archive
next to it", "creates the archive next to the selected files").
Selecting the result afterwards also opened a second Finder window,
because Finder can only select something in an open window when it sits
right in that window's folder.

Now:

- Extract Here and Extract to "name" extract each archive next to
  itself.
- Compress to "name" puts the archive in the folder the selected items
are in, and names it after that folder when there are several items.
The Finder menu's label follows the same rule, so it still names the
file that is made. Compress Each Item Separately and Compress Contents
put each zip next to its item.
- Extract To… opens its folder dialog next to the archive, instead of in
  the window's folder.
- After any of these, the result is selected only when it sits in the
window's own folder, so no second Finder window opens. A result inside
an expanded folder simply appears there.

Nothing new is asked: the access MacPacker holds for the window's folder
also covers the folders expanded in it.

For review: the window's folder comes from
FIFinderSyncController.targetedURL(). AppUrl.folder(of:) gives an item's
own folder; AppUrl.folderOfFiles gives the deepest folder holding all of
them, for Compress to "name"; AppUrl.itemsToSelect keeps only what
landed in the window's folder. Extract To… now asks for read access only
to archive folders the chosen folder doesn't contain.

📝 Walkthrough

Compression and extraction handlers now derive output folders from selected items or archives, request access to relevant folders, and limit Finder selection to results in the window’s target folder. Shared URL helpers calculate containing folders and filter selectable results.

Changes: Finder-Window Folder Placement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Containing-folder and selection rules
Modules/Sources/FinderMenu/AppUrl.swift, Modules/Tests/CoreTests/AppUrlTests.swift
AppUrl adds helpers to find a common containing folder and filter placed items by the target folder. Tests cover folder calculation, empty input, and selection filtering.
Compression destinations and selection
MacPacker/Core/UrlHandling/AppUrlCompressHandler.swift, FinderExtension/FinderSync.swift, Modules/Tests/CoreTests/AppUrlTests.swift, Config/products/macpacker.json
Compression handlers place archives in item-related folders and request access to those folders. Finder selection is limited to results in the target folder. Multi-item archive naming uses the containing folder when available. Tests and translated changelog entries describe the compression change.
Extraction destinations and selection
MacPacker/Core/UrlHandling/AppUrlExtractHereHandler.swift, MacPacker/Core/UrlHandling/AppUrlExtractToFolderHandler.swift, MacPacker/Core/UrlHandling/AppUrlExtractToChosenFolderHandler.swift, Modules/Tests/CoreTests/AppUrlTests.swift, Config/products/macpacker.json
Extraction handlers request access to archive folders and place results beside archives or in the chosen destination. Finder selection is limited to results in the target folder. Tests and translated changelog entries describe the extraction change.

Comment thread MacPacker/Core/UrlHandling/AppUrlExtractHereHandler.swift
Before: Extract to "name" created its folder before the extraction
started, outside any activated access. A stored folder grant is only
active once taken, so after a restart, in a folder outside Downloads,
creating the folder could fail and the action do nothing. (The
extraction itself already takes the grant for the archive's folder, so
reading the archive and writing next to it were covered.)

Now: the folder is created inside the grant that covers the archive's
folder (Sandbox.accessSync).
Before: this pull request added its changelog items to the 1.1.0 block
of Config/products/macpacker.json. 1.1.0 was released on 19 October, so
that block takes no new items.

Now: macpacker.json is as on main. The full items are in the pull
request description, for a new version block, as AGENTS.md asks.
