Summary

Implements design 2a from Sleepypod Biometric Calibration.dc.html (claude.ai/design project 533ccaee…, impl notes impl/Biometric-Calibration.md) as the Settings → Biometric calibration page.

The page is now a single overview instead of six tabs:

  • Control row: side segmented, a lifecycle strip (Saved › Requested › Processor) and a Restore… ▾ menu (Previous / System defaults).
  • Saved profile against previous: sentence rows with inline values (white when they differ from previous), a slider per parameter (HR tolerance and history, breathing lower/upper ratio, HRV minimum windows) and an effect cell. A sleep-stage summary counts overrides against the shipped rules and links to Sleep stages.
  • Evaluation dataset: frozen nights as chips with their T/V/H split and reference source, split counts, plus Import reference and Freeze a new dataset, which open the existing workbench views.
  • What the saved profile did: per-night previous/saved HR error bars (0–5 bpm scale), a night trace (reference, previous dashed, saved) for waveform replays, and the previous/saved table with holdout emphasised and better/worse colouring.
  • Actions: Save and request creates a revision, requests it (next_session), and re-runs the latest experiment on its tuning and validation nights. Restore previous and the menu open a diff review before rollbackProfile / resetProfile.
  • Activity: activation events (saved, requested, acknowledged, restored), backtests, dataset freezes and reference imports, with AGENT / YOU / POD badges.

Everything is wired to the existing biometricTuning procedures; there are no new endpoints or schema changes. The derivation logic lives in a pure, tested calibration-model.ts.

Where this differs from the mock or spec, and why

  • No local "preview" predictions. No local model maps a slider value to HR error, so edited rows read tested on save instead of showing invented numbers. The real job runs when you save.
  • Holdout is not re-run on save. Each exposure weakens it, so it stays a deliberate action in the workbench.
  • No "raw" trace layer. The trace API has no raw series. HRV is shown as the index MAE in ms, because the reports carry no agreement score.
  • Backtests, dataset freezes and imports are badged POD. Those records don't store who requested them.
  • Workbench links stay at the bottom (References, Profiles, Backtests, Observations). The revision library, validated activation, dataset/experiment builders and shadow runs are not part of 2a but are still needed. Overview, ProfileRecovery and History are removed because 2a replaces them.
  • Lifecycle values and relative times are English mono tokens. All other new strings are localised, and es.po is complete.
  • New theme tokens: --calib-* and --actor-* in globals.css, with light-theme variants.

Test plan

  • tsc --noEmit clean
  • eslint clean on changed paths
  • vitest: 22 new model tests (lifecycle, overrides, backtest grouping, per-night scoring, trace paths, clock labels) and 7 page tests (lifecycle, evidence, activity, save → revision → request → re-run, restore review, workbench navigation, loading/error)
  • Calibration and Settings suites: 431/431 pass. Unit failures elsewhere are the Python-venv integration tests, which need uv sync in the worktree.
  • Visual check with a fixture harness in dark, light and 390 px phone widths against the mock
  • Browser e2e (tests/browser/workflow.e2e.ts): the restore step now uses Restore previous → review dialog → lifecycle strip. CI runs this.
  • On a pod: move a slider, Save and request. The strip should show waiting, then acknowledged, and the processor should switch to running saved. Activity should log the save and request.

📝 Walkthrough

The biometric calibration interface is reorganized as a workbench for profile editing, restore requests, lifecycle status, datasets, backtest evidence, activity, and related views. Supporting changes add evaluation setup, raw archive discovery, retained-record replay ordering, and legacy-reference linking.

Changes: Biometric calibration and evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Profile model and controls
src/components/biometrics/Calibration/calibration-model.ts, src/components/biometrics/Calibration/CalibrationProfileCard.tsx, src/components/biometrics/Calibration/CalibrationControls.tsx, src/components/biometrics/Calibration/tests/calibration-model.test.ts
Model helpers derive editable values, actor identities, lifecycle states, sleep-stage differences, backtest scores, and time labels. The profile card displays and edits settings against a previous profile. Restore controls review a profile diff before rollback or reset. Tests cover model calculations and states.
Workbench page and evidence
src/components/biometrics/Calibration/BiometricCalibration.tsx, src/components/biometrics/Calibration/CalibrationPage.tsx, src/components/biometrics/Calibration/CalibrationEvidence.tsx, src/components/biometrics/Calibration/CalibrationActivity.tsx, src/components/biometrics/Calibration/tests/*, tests/browser/workflow.e2e.ts
The page loads profile and evaluation data, saves revisions, requests next-session activation, and queues eligible backtests. Dataset and backtest views display split, per-night, aggregate, and trace information. Activity displays recent events. Navigation removes History and replaces the former overview and recovery components. Tests cover page, evidence, restore, and browser rollback flows.
Evaluation setup and retained replay
src/components/biometrics/Calibration/evaluation-setup.ts, src/biometrics/backtest/*, modules/common/biometrics/*, modules/common/test_raw_records.py, modules/piezo-processor/test_retained_replay.py
Evaluation setup links references, selects sessions with readable archives, freezes datasets, retains waveform sources, creates experiments, and queues backtests. RAW decoding supports multiple typed records, and replay orders events within a configured window. Artifact event bounds may share a timestamp but may not overlap.
Reference services and route wiring
src/biometrics/references/legacy.ts, src/biometrics/references/tests/legacy.test.ts, src/server/routers/biometricTuning.ts, src/demo/handlers/*, src/demo/biometrics/worker-build.json
Reference services count and link legacy rows by side. Router endpoints expose legacy-reference operations and raw archive lookup. Demo handlers return empty archive results and zero legacy-reference counts.
Presentation and translations
app/globals.css, src/components/Settings/sections.ts, src/lib/i18n/locales/*.po
Theme palettes add calibration-state and actor-identity tokens. Locale catalogs add workbench, profile, dataset, evidence, activity, and restore text and remove entries associated with the deleted history, overview, and recovery views. The settings description no longer mentions evaluation history.

111-118: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Stabilize finished so the useMemo calls can cache.

Line 91 creates a new finished array on every render. scores and activity both list finished as a dependency. The trpc.useQueries result array can also change on every render. Both memos therefore recompute on every render, including the 15 s clock tick and the 3–5 s polling refetches. Memoize finished on group. Use a stable key for summaries, for example the dataUpdatedAt values.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make compareTone symmetric for regressions.

The function marks an improvement as better only when delta is below -threshold. It marks a result as worse when delta is above 0. A regression of 0.01 bpm is therefore shown in amber, while an improvement of 0.04 bpm is shown as same. The test at Line 229 (compareTone(3, 3.01) → worse) treats this as intended. The doc comment says the colour "only marks a real difference", so the regression branch contradicts it. If the asymmetry is deliberate, update the doc comment. Otherwise, use the threshold on both sides.

Show keyboard focus on the active thumb.

Both range inputs are transparent, and these visible thumbs do not change when an input receives focus. A keyboard user cannot see which breathing cut-off will move. Add a visible focus-visible style to the thumb associated with each input.

Based on learnings: interactive controls need a visible focus indicator after native and shared behavior are checked.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Handle backtest enqueue failure as a partial save.

If an enqueue fails after activate succeeds, the catch reports “Save failed” even though the new revision was requested. The refresh then makes the draft clean, so Save and request cannot retry the missing backtest. Preserve the successful activation state and provide a way to retry failed enqueues.

Do not enqueue holdout on every save.

When the dataset has holdout assignments, this loop enqueues a holdout job for each saved edit. The stated calibration policy keeps holdout exposure as a deliberate workbench action, because repeated exposure weakens its value. Limit automatic save reruns to tuning and validation. (github.com)

Keep default-profile evidence within one comparison group.

When the saved profile has no revision ID, this predicate admits candidate jobs from different experiments that share the saved hash. bySplit can then combine those jobs on one dataset, even if their previous configurations differ. The page presents the resulting scores as one previous-versus-saved comparison. Group jobs by experiment and comparison configuration before selecting splits.

Require a waveform experiment before reporting replay readiness.

Line 108 can select onDataset[0] when it is not signal_replay, or fall back to jobs[0] from another dataset. This condition still reports ready, and saving enqueues that experiment. The page can therefore claim to test edited waveform parameters without running a waveform replay on the displayed dataset. Select only a signal_replay experiment for this dataset; otherwise report no-experiment.

🌐 Web query:

github sleepypod/core PR 836 evaluation-setup.ts useEvaluationSetup freeze idempotency key

💡 Result:

In PR #836, `useEvaluationSetup` creates one random key in a `useRef` and reuses namespaced versions for dataset creation (`${key}:dataset`), waveform retention, experiment creation, and backtest enqueueing. That supports retries using the same mounted hook instance. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sleepypod/core/81b8be4c90fe9e3651db1575a9c41e7a46d416a3/src/components/biometrics/Calibration/evaluation-setup.ts))

**Potential idempotency gap:** the key is never rotated after a run completes or fails. Clicking “run” again on the same mounted hook reuses the same dataset key—even if the chosen sessions or references have changed—so the server may treat a deliberate new freeze as a retry and return the earlier dataset. The code establishes key reuse; whether that actually returns stale data depends on the server’s idempotency semantics, which this hook doesn’t establish. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sleepypod/core/81b8be4c90fe9e3651db1575a9c41e7a46d416a3/src/components/biometrics/Calibration/evaluation-setup.ts))

A safer pattern is to keep the key for retries of one attempt, but generate a fresh key when starting a new attempt after `done` or `failed`. The test verifies the workflow completes, but doesn’t test key stability across retries versus new runs. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sleepypod/core/81b8be4c90fe9e3651db1575a9c41e7a46d416a3/src/components/biometrics/Calibration/tests/evaluation-setup.test.ts))

Rotate the setup key after a completed freeze.

useEvaluationSetup keeps one key for the mounted page. A second click after done can therefore return the existing dataset for an identical request, or fail with an idempotency conflict when new nights change the request. Keep the key for retries after failed, but rotate it before a new run after done.

Retry with a new selection fails because of the idempotency key.

key is created once per hook instance. After a failure, run() uses the same ${key.current}:dataset key again. The demo createDataset handler throws REVISION_CONFLICT when the request hash changes under the same key. The real coordinator probably does the same. Assume the first run froze sessions A and B. On retry, new archives appear or a new reference is imported, so chooseSessions returns a different set. The retry then fails with a conflict and never recovers until the page remounts. The same problem affects :waveform when inspection adds source IDs. The message on line 155 tells the user to "freeze again once its archives are inspected", so this retry path is the expected one, and it is blocked.

Generate a new key when a run starts after a failed or done state. This keeps resume-within-a-run safe and allows a changed retry.

Proposed fix
   async function run() {
     const api = utils.client.biometricTuning
+    if (progress.step === 'failed' || progress.step === 'done') key.current = randomKey()
     try {

If identical retries must stay idempotent, compare a hash of the selection with the previous run before you rotate the key.

A double click can start two concurrent runs.

running comes from React state. The state does not update until the next render. Two rapid clicks in the same render both see running === false, so run() starts twice. Track an in-flight ref as well.

Lock preparation does not handle a pre-existing lock with wrong ownership, mode, or size.

The command appends to the file, then runs chown and chmod. acquire_execution_lock also requires the file to be empty (st_size == 0). It requires a single link, and it uses O_NOFOLLOW.

The step creates or adopts a regular file correctly. It does not remove a stale symlink or hardlink at /run/sleepypod-shadow.lock. /run is root-owned tmpfs and is cleared on boot, so this is a narrow case. If it occurs, the workers fail with Invalid biometric execution lock on every start, and the step never repairs it.

The : >> redirect and the chown and chmod calls follow a symlink. Because the step runs as root, a symlink in /run would redirect chown to an arbitrary target. Only root can create entries in /run, so the risk is low. Consider adding [ ! -L path ] as a guard.

Calculate the night from local noon, not elapsed hours.

On March 8, 2026, 12:30 PM in America/Los_Angeles belongs to the March 8 night. Subtracting 12 hours reaches March 7, 11:30 PM because daylight-saving time began that morning. nightKey therefore returns March 7 and can group a session with the wrong cohort. Compare the local hour with noon, then adjust the local calendar date. Add a spring-transition test.

Prioritize the main session when two sessions touch one night.

If a session runs from 11 PM to 1 PM and a one-hour nap starts after noon, both touch the nap’s night. Sorting by starting night selects the newer nap first. The conflict check then rejects the longer session, so evaluation uses the nap instead of the main sleep. Rank conflicting sessions by their touched nights and duration before applying the one-session-per-night rule.
