fix: first-install fixes from the Studio dry run (realm-safe log, error codes, thread guard, schemas, docs) - #174
Fixes from using @statelyai/agent for the first time in an existing app. A subagent installed the package in Studio's registry app (yarn 1, XState 4.38, zod 3.22, jest, TS 5.2), then ran the loop-to-machine and add-traces skills on its AI machine-generation flow. The fixes below come from what it hit. Each library fix has a test that fails without it.
Library
Values from another realm count as JSON. Jest runs each test file in its own vm context. Objects from that context (and structuredClone output inside it) have a different Object.prototype and Error, so the log rejected them. As a result:
a nested metadata stamp silently dropped a run's whole log, which is the 2.0.0-alpha.30 bug;
entries read back from createInMemoryEventLogStore failed replay.
The checks now use realm-safe isPlainObject and isError.
A run with a store no longer runs unlogged. If its first entry can't be built, it settles { status: "error", cause: "journal" }.
Journaled errors keep their code (a string or a number). replay turns them back into Error objects, so an onError that checks instanceof Error behaves the same on replay.
Observers never fail the run. An onTrace, onTransition, onChunk or onResult that throws is reported with console.error.
thread-input-mismatch: a thread that already has entries, given different input, throws instead of returning the other run's result. The same input still resumes.
invalid-schema:setupAgent throws for a schema without ~standard (zod 3.23 and earlier) instead of silently skipping its validation.
describeMachine prints ? for a transition whose target comes from a helper call, instead of (stays).
typesVersions: subpath types (/testing, /log, …) now resolve under moduleResolution: "node".
engines: lowered from 22.18 to >=22; the package ran fine on 22.17.
Docs: the verification docs now say what the hash proves: the log wasn't altered. They no longer claim it matches the live run.
Docs and skills
README:
Requirements: TypeScript 5.4+, a Standard Schema library, and openai 5+ for the /openai subpath.
XState 4/5 apps: a pointer to the workspace-package route, plus a table of the errors you see when versions mix.
New Agent skills section: what each skill does and how to install them.
Links: every relative link is now absolute, since relative links are dead inside the installed package.
Links to blob/main/: the 12 in skills and docs pointed at the v1 branch from 2024 and were dead. They now point to next.
add-traces:
The replay test compares status, context and output, not just the state value, and asserts the log isn't empty.
It explains what to stamp when the machine has only text requests.
It explains how a store failure differs from a throwing observer.
It says OTel needs @opentelemetry/api.
It corrects which states foldTraces gives rows to.
A loosened test variant gets its own version.
It warns against putting the log in a table that already means something else.
loop-to-machine:
It covers generate → validate → repair loops (text requests, no decision).
It covers pinning a baseline when the loop lives inline in a framework handler.
It notes that the mock-model link isn't in the package.
generate-machine: corrected the path to agent-workflow.json.
Checked
This repo:pnpm run check, all 1,623 tests, and docs:check pass.
In Studio: with this build installed, all six workarounds the dry run needed were removed one at a time, and every suite still passed (99 tests) after each removal, with the TS 5.9 check clean:
--ignore-engines
tsconfig paths for the subpaths
the jest JSON store wrapper
the onTrace try/catch
the custom thread guard
the plain-object error branch
The XState 6 alias and symlink are still needed for an app on XState 4, as documented.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved event-log replay across JavaScript realms, preserving error details and handling undefined fields consistently.
Observer callback errors are reported without stopping runs; journal write failures stop runs with an error.
Resuming a stored thread with different input is rejected, and unsupported schemas or incomplete requests are identified during setup.
Helper-call transition targets are shown as unknown when they cannot be determined.
New Features
Seam responses can now be asynchronous, and additional testing types are available.
Compatibility
The minimum Node.js requirement is now 22, TypeScript subpath resolution is improved, and the minimum supported AI SDK version is updated.
Documentation
Added upgrade guidance and expanded information on replay verification, error handling, agent workflows, and supported requirements.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The PR updates journal serialization and replay, observer and logging error handling, stored-thread input checks, setup validation, asynchronous seam responses, machine descriptions, and testing types. It also changes package metadata and updates documentation and skills guidance.
Shared helpers recognize cross-realm plain objects and errors. Journal entries prune undefined fields, preserve selected error data, and restore marked errors during replay.
Observers, logging, and stored-thread resumes src/run-agent.ts, src/run-agent.test.ts, docs/event-log.md, docs/observability.md, skills/add-traces/SKILL.md
Observer exceptions are reported without stopping dispatch. Logging failures stop runs with a store and warn while continuing without one. Resumed threads reject supplied input that differs from the recorded input.
Setup validation and asynchronous seam responses src/setup-agent.ts, src/setup-agent.test.ts, src/seam.ts, src/seam.test.ts
Setup validates declared schemas and requests. Seam responses may be promise-like, and runSeam awaits them before continuing.
Machine descriptions and testing types src/describe-machine.ts, src/describe-machine.test.ts, src/verify.ts, src/testing/index.ts
Descriptions show ? when a function returns a helper-call result. Exploration callbacks use exported snapshot and target aliases, which the testing entry point re-exports.
Package compatibility and usage guidance package.json, readme.md, docs/*, skills/*, .changeset/studio-dryrun-fixes.md
Package metadata updates published files, subpath type mappings, peer requirements, and the Node.js engine range. Documentation and skills describe compatibility, migration, runtime behavior, and updated links.
statelyai/agent#173: Its policy decider uses stored threads, which are subject to this PR’s input-mismatch behavior.
Suggested reviewers:claude
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to c3412
Resuming a stored thread that started without input will accept newly supplied input instead of throwing thread-input-mismatch, which weakens the new guard. In rare cases a live run can also behave differently from its replay when event shapes contain undefined fields. Tighten the input-free resume check before merging; the other concerns are narrow.

Reject undefined event schemas instead of replacing them.
If a supplied event map contains { SUBMIT: undefined }, assertStandardSchema accepts the value and normalizeEventSchemas registers SUBMIT with emptyEventSchema. The declared event then gets empty-payload validation instead of a setup error. Reject undefined for event entries; keep it permissible for optional schema slots.

createAgentRuntime.transition passes the original event to execution.transition before appendLogEntry removes undefined fields. A machine can therefore take different branches for Object.hasOwn(event, "detail") or "detail" in event during live execution and replay. The verification hash cannot detect this difference because it hashes the normalized replay fold.
The documentation makes undefined-field pruning intentional, so this is a narrow replay-equivalence edge case, not a major data-integrity issue. If replay equivalence is required, normalize the input and event before live execution, or document that own-property-sensitive checks are not replay-equivalent.

🟡 Minor · Preserve plain error payloads that contain the normalization marker. · event-log.ts:1029-1072
src/event-log.ts:1029-1072 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Preserve plain error payloads that contain the normalization marker.
errorEvent accepts any error value, including a plain object. normalizeEventErrors copies that object unchanged. During replay, restoreJournaledEvent then treats its @error, name, and message fields as an internal normalized Error. A live onError transition receives the plain object, but replay receives an Error, so checks such as error instanceof Error can take different branches.
Tag normalized errors at the event boundary instead of inferring their origin from the serialized error payload. Remove that tag before the replayed event reaches the machine.
The existing unmarked plain-object test does not cover this marker collision. The issue is limited to plain error objects that match the normalized shape and to transitions whose behavior depends on the error value or type.
