Summary

  • ProxyServer::from_config no longer installs a process-wide jsonwebtoken provider. Only building the built-in verifier does, and a provider the host installed first stands. A proxy without auth: or with an injected verifier leaves the choice to its host.
  • The README and rustdoc state which entry points are for an application that leaves authentication to the proxy.
  • CI takes the current taiki-e/install-action v2, which replaces ci(deps): bump taiki-e/install-action from 2.87.29 to 2.87.31 #156.

This carries the part of #155 that #159 did not. The rest of #155 is the crypto stack #159 already landed, plus a reformat under another rustfmt style edition.

Behavior change

A host that relied on merely building a proxy without auth: to install the provider for its own jsonwebtoken use must call install_default_crypto_provider or install its own.

Testing

a_proxy_without_auth_installs_no_jwt_provider failed before the change. cargo nextest run: 923 passed on the default build, 951 with all features. Clippy with all features and cargo fmt --check pass.

Closes #162

A proxy installed a process-wide jsonwebtoken provider while being built,
even when it verifies no token, so an application with its own token checks
got the proxy's provider or lost the race to install its own. Only building
the built-in verifier installs one now, and a provider installed first stands.

The docs state which entry points are for an application that leaves
authentication to the proxy.

CI takes the current taiki-e/install-action v2.

Closes #162

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior
    • Proxies without a built-in JWT verifier no longer automatically install a process-wide crypto provider. Applications using this setup must select a provider themselves if needed.
    • Building the built-in JWT verifier continues to install a provider.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified when to use proxy authentication hooks versus handling authentication and authorization in the application.
    • Explained provider installation behavior for built-in verification, externally supplied verifiers, and deployments without proxy JWT authentication.

The built-in JWT verifier now installs the process-wide jsonwebtoken provider during construction. Proxy construction without a built-in verifier does not install a provider. The README and Rust documentation describe this behavior and the proxy authentication hooks. CI action revisions also changed.

The new embedding guidance can lead applications that authenticate in their own tonic interceptor to leave proxy-owned endpoints unguarded. Clarify the README and src/hooks.rs wording before or soon after merge. The provider-installation change itself looks sound.

Explanation

Issue #162 requires provider installation only for the built-in verifier, no provider for a proxy without auth:, and README/rustdoc guidance. ProxyServer::from_config no longer installs a provider. ConfigVerifier::build retains provider installation. Tests cover both provider cases. The README and rustdoc describe the host-owned choice and the relevant entry points.

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 5 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The .github/workflows/ci.yml change updates taiki-e/install-action to v2 and replaces work from #156. Issue #162 does not request a CI action update. The provider implementation, tests, and documentation are within #162 scope, but this CI change has no demonstrated connection to that issue.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated .github/workflows/ci.yml action update from this pull request, or link and assess it under a requirement that explicitly covers the CI change.

An application's checks never see the proxy's own routes, so they need a
guard of their own or must stay off.

[Medium impact] Safe to merge within the reviewed scope: built-in JWT authentication retains its provider, and the host’s prior provider selection is respected.

Summary

Moves automatic JWT provider selection out of ProxyServer::from_config. Only building the built-in verifier selects one.

  • A proxy without built-in JWT verification leaves the provider choice to its host.
  • CI jobs use a refreshed pinned installer for their tools.

polaz explicitly acknowledges that hosts relying on proxy construction to select their JWT provider must now install one themselves. This is intentional.

No blocking issues were found. The change is safe to merge within the reviewed scope.
