perf(xmldsig): sign with one document parse - #353
Signing parses the document once per operation for templates that need no reference to read generated content: KeyInfo, digests and the generated C14N 1.1 transform all join one final splice.
Parsing, canonicalization and base64 handling drop repeated validation, hashing and per-element allocation.
Changes
Signing: deferred KeyInfo, digest values and generated canonicalization in one final mutation; budgets are checked once before work starts. A generation of its own remains only where a Reference reads the content, the document has a DTD, the writer adds an ID or merges into an element with its own namespace scope, or analysis needs placeholder text.
Parser: the xmloxide build records node positions while parsing instead of scanning again, takes slices of validated text, resolves up to eight prefixes without hashing, and refuses XML versions other than 1.0.
Limit pass: skips attribute splitting for tags that declare no namespace in documents without attribute defaults, and judges whitespace only outside the document element.
C14N: namespace maps are copied only when they change, and the attribute buffer is reused across start tags.
Base64 payloads are scanned by alphabet runs.
Testing
Tests, lints, formatting, the xmlsec1 oracle and PKCS#11 pass on macOS; CI covers Linux, Windows and the no-std builds. Generated and explicit canonicalization are compared byte for byte, and parse work is asserted through public signing paths.
- Signing commits the digests, KeyInfo and SignatureValue together, so
a template whose references do not read KeyInfo needs no intermediate
generation. The owned entry points keep the starting cell instead of
parsing a staged copy, and restore it on failure.
- Every ceiling of the final generation is decided once, before the
private key is used.
- xmloxide records node source ranges itself, so a document without a
DOCTYPE skips the separate lexical scan. The parser refuses XML
versions other than 1.0, which only that scan did before; a
differential test holds the positions and the refusals together.
Part of #352
Part of #347
Validation walks a run of alphabet bytes through one table instead of
branching per byte, and normalization copies the text between whitespace
instead of pushing each character. Refusals and their precedence are
unchanged.
- An element that declares nothing shares its parent's rendered map, so
most elements no longer copy it.
- Projection keeps one frame per open level instead of one per child, so
its stack grows with depth rather than with an element's width.
Each start tag allocated its own attribute list. One start tag finishes
before the next begins, so a single buffer on the canonical output
serves the whole walk and output stays byte-identical in every mode.
Closes#349
- The parser takes slices of its validated text instead of validating
each name, attribute value and text run again.
- Prefix lookups compare a short list without hashing and move to the
keyed table past eight bindings, so many prefixes stay constant-time.
- The limit pass skips splitting attributes of a tag that declares no
namespace in a document without attribute defaults, and judges text
as whitespace only outside the document element.
Closes#348
- A Reference without a final canonicalization no longer costs a commit
and parse: the generated C14N 1.1 transform joins the base64 values
and KeyInfo in the final splice, and its canonical text joins the
canonical SignedInfo, so the output bytes stay the same.
- It stays a generation of its own when a Reference reads the edited
element, a DTD could default its attributes, or analysis needs
placeholder text; that last case is now known before that parse.
- Splices now carry several ranges, in document order.

only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes

Walkthrough
The changes update xmloxide parsing, add parser-recorded source positions for DOM projection, and revise XML signature mutation planning. Canonicalization now reuses namespace and attribute state, and base64 payload scanning processes contiguous alphabet runs.
Changes: XML parser and source positions
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Storage-aware scanning and borrowed values scripts/patches/xmloxide-0.5.0.patch
Parser scans and lexical values use borrowed source slices where possible. Work, allocation, and diagnostic failures propagate as resource errors.
Entity expansion and attribute values scripts/patches/xmloxide-0.5.0.patch
Entity expansion uses explicit frames and storage-backed output. Attribute processing applies line-ending and whitespace normalization in separate steps.
Namespace scope and prefix lookup scripts/patches/xmloxide-0.5.0.patch, src/parser_xmloxide/parser/input.rs
Namespace scopes use undo records. Prefixes use a short list before bindings spill into a name map.
DTD and iterative tree construction scripts/patches/xmloxide-0.5.0.patch
DTD and tree data use selected storage. Element parsing uses an explicit stack, and entity-fragment nodes are grafted into the document.
The parser can return source ranges for elements and lexical nodes with the parsed document.
DOM preflight and position projection src/xml/dom/*
Eligible xmloxide parses skip lexical preflight and pass parser-recorded ranges to projection. Tests compare recorder output with scanner output.
Signing mutation and canonicalization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Canonical namespace rendering and attribute reuse src/c14n/*
Canonicalization copies namespace maps only when they change and reuses the start-tag attribute buffer.
Splice metadata and atomic document commits src/document.rs, src/xmldsig/mutation.rs, src/xmldsig/sign.rs
Splice metadata tracks replaced spans and added-node and depth bounds. Atomic signing commits retain the prior document state for rollback.
Reference analysis and deferred signing edits src/xmldsig/sign.rs, src/xmldsig/sign/*
Signing analyzes generated transforms and reference dependencies to choose deferred splices or intermediate mutations.
Final output and bounded payload processing src/xmldsig/sign.rs, src/xmldsig/whitespace.rs
Final output applies deferred edits through projected serialization when needed. Base64 scanning processes alphabet runs and retains its validation checks.
Signing with a KeyInfo writer and a content-reading transform now repeats parsing and transform work, which can hit work limits that previously passed. A narrow debug-build panic can also occur when replacing stale signature content with shorter values. Resolve the speculative analysis before merging; the arithmetic fix is a small reorder.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR implements the active coding objectives in #352, #310, #348, and #349. The signing plan defers KeyInfo, digest values, and generated C14N 1.1 output when dependency analysis permits it, and keeps intermediate generations when a reference reads the affected content. Final mutations project limits and use atomic rollback. Tests cover public signing paths, writer and non-writer paths, generated versus explicit canonicalization, parse work, and position recording. The parser uses inline namespace bindings with scoped undo and keyed fallback. Canonicalization reuses one attribute buffer for native and accounted scratch. The reported output, oracle, policy, and work-accounting tests support the required compatibility behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed parser, storage, preflight, signing, canonicalization, and Base64 code supports the linked performance, limit, atomicity, and accounting objectives. The xmloxide adaptation supplies recorded positions, generic native/accounted storage, and the namespace resolver needed by #348 and #352. No demonstrated unrelated product change appears in the reviewed scope.

- Projected length adds the splice before subtracting: stale
SignatureValue content could underflow it.
- Projected depth counts elements alone, as the parser's metrics do, so
documents at the limit are no longer refused.
- A writer that adds an ID, merges into a child with its own namespace
scope, or runs in a document with a DTD commits KeyInfo first, so
ambiguous references and over-limit scopes are still refused.
- A speculative analysis stops before the placeholder parse when
KeyInfo is pending too, not only for a generated transform.
Regression tests for each case are in generated_c14n_tests.
