perf(xmldsig): stream final Base64, hash externals once - #357
A final Base64 transform decodes straight into the terminal digest instead of materializing the filtered text and the decoded buffer.
External resource bytes are read once: the resource map is identified without hashing, and a Reference's fingerprint comes from one pass.
Signing no longer charges a final Base64 transform twice, so a document within the Base64 limits signs.
Changes
base64_stream holds the streaming decoder shared by the terminal digest and detached payloads, with a fast path for runs of alphabet bytes.
TransformTerminal::finish_base64 streams into the digest; dependency analysis does not decode.
Operation identities of the borrowed map and its entries no longer read their bytes. external_resource_fingerprint is unchanged: it comes from a valid SHA-256 DigestValue of a Reference without transforms, otherwise from one hash per URI.
The stream reports the resident decoder's error when padding ends a decoding block.
When input has both a Base64 decoding error and exceeds the output limit, the decoding error can now be reported first. Both refuse the input.
Testing
Tests, lints, formatting and PKCS#11 token tests pass on macOS; CI runs the full matrix. The decoder has a differential test against the resident decoder across chunk boundaries.
XMLDSig Base64 transforms now handle streamed input more consistently, including malformed data found late in a payload.
Resource limits are enforced against Base64 input and decoded output, including when a limit is exceeded by a single byte.
Verification evidence now reports fingerprints that correspond to the external resource bytes used during verification, including when digest verification fails.
Tests
Added coverage for Base64 decoding boundaries, resource limits, and external-resource fingerprints.
- Decode a final Base64 transform straight into the digest with the
streaming kernel shared with detached payloads.
- Do not execute a final Base64 transform during dependency analysis,
which charged its budgets twice and refused documents within limits.
- Identify the borrowed external resource map and its entries without
hashing them; report a fingerprint from one pass, taken from a valid
SHA-256 DigestValue when the Reference has no transforms.
- Report the resident decoder's error when padding ends a decoding block.

Walkthrough
The change adds a shared streaming Base64 decoder and uses it for final Base64 transform digesting. It also changes borrowed external-resource identity planning and separates resource fingerprints from identities during verification.

Borrowed resource identities now use map or byte-buffer addresses instead of hashing resource bytes. Verification obtains and caches SHA-256 fingerprints separately. Tests cover fingerprint caching and reported fingerprints for valid and invalid references.
A shared decoder filters RFC 2045 Base64 bytes, decodes bounded blocks, and retains decoding failures. Detached verification uses the shared decoder. Tests compare streamed output and errors with the resident decoder across chunk sizes and malformed input.
Base64 input traversal uses a shared iterator. Digest terminals stream decoded output and account for input and output budgets; discard terminals skip decoding. Chain output and enveloped-signature remapping use shared helpers. Integration tests cover exact limits, limit violations, and malformed data after padding.

The changed files support issue #356. They implement the shared Base64 stream, terminal digest path, dependency-analysis behavior, resource identity changes, fingerprint handling, and related automated tests. No unrelated change is demonstrated.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #356 coding objectives are implemented. The final Base64 path streams into the terminal digest, dependency analysis skips final Base64 decoding, borrowed resource identities avoid byte reads, and resource fingerprints use the required digest or one hash per URI. The added tests cover decoder behavior, signing limits, and fingerprint behavior. The issue also requires before-and-after measurements for bytes, time, and peak RSS on a large Base64 payload and a large resource map. The PR description and diff provide no such measurements.
Resolution
Add reproducible before-and-after measurements for bytes, time, and peak RSS for a large Base64 payload and a large resource map. Include the workload, limits, and results in the PR evidence.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 38.46% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 26 functions across 12 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
