Role-Based Emergency Pause & Circuit Breaker #45

Closed

Description

Description

This issue aims to address the implementation of Role-Based Emergency Pause & Circuit Breaker.

The core objective is to: Implement an authorized pausable/circuit-breaker mechanism with granular role checks that halts sensitive entrypoints during incidents without stranding user funds.

By completing this feature, we will ensure that the TrustFlow protocol maintains its high standards for security, usability, and decentralized logic. This issue requires careful attention to the Smart Contracts architecture and adherence to the existing project conventions.

When picking up this issue, please ensure you document any new dependencies or architectural decisions made during development.

Tasks

  • Review Soroban architecture and soroban-cli usage
  • Implement Rust logic for: Role-Based Emergency Pause & Circuit Breaker
  • Write comprehensive unit tests in Rust
  • Ensure proper event emission for indexing
  • Run cargo fmt and cargo clippy
  • Verify soroban contract build successfully compiles to WASM without bloating size

Acceptance Criteria

  • Feature accurately implements the objective: Implement an authorized pausable/circuit-breaker mechanism with granular role checks that halts sensitive entrypoints during incidents without stranding user funds.
  • Any PR that introduces Rust errors is automatically blocked
  • CI pipeline runs in under 3 minutes per PR
  • Code is properly reviewed and approved by codeowners

Hi. I am a web3 fullstack developer. Kindly assign this issue to me. I have years of Rust and smart contract development experience with deep expertise in Soroban, access control patterns, circuit breaker mechanisms, and building secure pausable systems that protect user funds while maintaining emergency response capabilities across production-grade DeFi protocols.

My approach begins by implementing a granular role-based pause system with three key components: a Pausable storage struct tracking paused status per function category (e.g., FUNCTION_PAUSED for deposit, withdraw, trade, claim), role-based authorization using HasRole checks (PAUSER_ROLE for pausing, UNPAUSER_ROLE for resuming, ADMIN_ROLE for configuration), and a circuit breaker that automatically triggers on anomalous conditions (e.g., excessive losses, suspicious withdrawal patterns). I will add modifiers to sensitive entrypoints that check require_not_paused() and require_role() before execution, ensuring halt operations do not block emergency fund withdrawals or user balance views, with clear error types like Error::Paused and Error::Unauthorized.
I will emit comprehensive events (Paused, Unpaused, CircuitBreakerTriggered) with metadata (caller, timestamp, function category) for indexing and monitoring, and implement a timelock mechanism that requires multi-signature or delayed execution for critical pause/resume actions. My testing strategy includes unit tests for each role's pause capabilities, circuit breaker triggers (simulating loss thresholds, repeated failures), the combination of pause + emergency withdrawal ensuring funds remain accessible, and event emission verification. I will adhere to Soroban best practices by using env.storage().instance() for pause state, minimizing storage reads/writes for gas optimization, and ensuring WASM size stays lean with cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown --release.

I am ready to deliver this comprehensive pause mechanism within 4-5 hours with full test coverage, cargo fmt and clippy compliance, and documentation of all architectural decisions
