Self-review of #229 and #232 (Aster.Elsa, program #58). I reproduced each defect with a probe before fixing it.

Changes

  • A resumed workflow that wrote a matching resource hung for 10 minutes, then the event was lost (high).
    • Cause: the hook called IStimulusSender.SendAsync inline, inside the Aster write. Elsa's WorkflowResumer holds a non-reentrant lock per stimulus hash for the whole resumed run. A workflow waiting on Resource Saved (Product) that saved a Product sent the same-hash stimulus while still inside that lock. It waited for LockAcquisitionTimeout (default 10 min), then the event was dropped with a warning.
    • Fix: the hook queues each committed event for a single background worker.
      • The worker sends events in commit order, one at a time.
      • It runs outside the execution context of the Aster call, and pushes each event's Elsa tenant itself.
      • Failed writes still queue nothing.
      • Delivery stays at-most-once. The queue is in memory, so events still queued when the process stops are lost (documented).
    • Why not Elsa's IStimulusDispatcher? Its BackgroundStimulusDispatcher sends each stimulus as a separate command across four workers, so ordering is lost. It also forwards the tenant only when Elsa.Tenants is installed.
  • A workflow was resumed by the same event that started or resumed it (medium).
    • Cause: one event reaches Elsa as several stimuli (one per filter combination). A workflow started by Resource Saved (Product) that then waited on another Resource Saved was resumed at once by the same event, against the README's "resumes once, on the next matching event".
    • Fix:
      • Each instance records the operation IDs its triggers received (the latest 32, in a workflow property).
      • A new bookmark ignores the events received before it was created; on one of those it waits again.
      • Bookmarks already waiting before an event still resume on it.
      • I checked that Elsa's ConvertTo<string[]> reads the property back from both persisted forms (a JSON array and a List<object>).
  • Padded identifiers faulted without a stable code (low).
    • AsterFaults now maps InvalidIdentifierException to its code (identifier-whitespace), as Aster.AspNetCore does.
    • AsterTenantMapping.FromElsaTenantId refuses padded Elsa tenant IDs with tenant-scope-invalid, as its docs promise.
  • README, design doc and wiki updated for the delivery mechanics.

Tests

  • New tests:
    • Hang: a resumed workflow writing a matching resource doesn't block on the resumer lock.
    • Double resume: same-event resume, including the same-filter case.
    • Fault codes: padded resource ID, channel and Elsa tenant (4 cases).
  • Each fails with its fix reverted.
  • Tests wait for delivery through an internal WhenAllSentAsync(), with no sleeps.
  • Aster.Elsa.Tests: 76/76 on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0. The Release build has 0 warnings.
  • Core lifecycle tests and the dependent Agents tests pass.

Behaviour change and risks

  • Ordering: workflows triggered by an Aster write now run after the Aster call returns, not inside it.
  • Head-of-line blocking: one slow workflow delays the delivery of later events, a trade-off for ordered delivery.
  • Persistence not tested: the operation-ID bookkeeping was tested on Elsa's in-memory stores, not on EF persistence.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Lifecycle events are delivered asynchronously after commits, preserving queue order for each caller.
    • Workflows respond only to subsequent matching events and avoid duplicate processing.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Tenant and resource identifiers with blank, leading, or trailing whitespace are rejected with clear faults.
    • Invalid identifier faults now preserve the original error details.
  • Documentation

    • Documented at-most-once delivery, including the possibility of queued events being lost if the process stops or crashes.

- The lifecycle hook no longer calls IStimulusSender inside the Aster
write. It queues each committed event in memory and one background
worker sends them in commit order, outside the caller's execution
context, pushing the event's Elsa tenant itself. A workflow resumed
under Elsa's per-stimulus resume lock that saves a matching resource
no longer waits on that lock until it times out and drops the event.
Delivery stays at-most-once; queued events are lost when the process
  stops.
- Lifecycle triggers remember the operation IDs their workflow instance
received; a bookmark re-creates itself instead of completing for an
event received before it was created, so a workflow started by an
event is not resumed by that same event's other stimuli.
- AsterFaults maps InvalidIdentifierException (identifier-whitespace),
as Aster.AspNetCore does, and AsterTenantMapping refuses Elsa tenant
IDs with leading or trailing whitespace (tenant-scope-invalid).
- Regression tests for each; README, design doc and wiki updated.

📝 Walkthrough

Lifecycle events now use ordered background delivery. Workflow bookmarks track recent operation IDs to avoid reprocessing earlier events. Tenant and activity identifiers with surrounding whitespace are rejected.

Possibly related issues

  • valence-works/aster issue 114 — The changes implement the described Elsa module design decisions for trigger delivery and tenant propagation.
  • valence-works/aster issue 58 — The changes add Elsa trigger delivery and workflow resumption behavior.
Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7224e

The tenant summary now states the validation rule. This documentation change is ready to merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6c0e7

Background delivery avoids the reported workflow lock re-entry, but introduces shared availability risk: one slow workflow can delay other tenants, while continued writes can grow an unlimited backlog. Tenant identity remains explicit, and shutdown-related event loss is documented.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new singleton worker serializes lifecycle delivery across tenants through an unbounded queue. A slow tenant lookup or workflow execution delays every later event, while successful writers continue enqueueing without delivery backpressure. This newly couples tenants' delivery availability and can turn sustained excess input into host-memory pressure. The path requires successful lifecycle operations; externally reachable authorization and workload controls are not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new availability coupling covers all lifecycle events using the same singleton hook, including other tenants in that container. A stalled send blocks that worker; sustained enqueueing can consume application-process memory. The evidence does not establish cross-process impact, data disclosure, or increased workflow privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional availability path is successful resource operations feeding events faster than the shared worker completes tenant lookup and workflow execution. Someone able to generate those operations, or influence a matching slow workflow, could delay unrelated tenants. This is not a verified external exploit: the concrete entrypoint, required authorization, rate controls, and production workload remain unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The worker suppresses inherited execution context and applies the event's explicit tenant before resolving and invoking the stimulus sender. Missing non-default tenants are dropped rather than redirected to the default tenant. These controls counter accidental ambient-tenant inheritance; external tenant-provider semantics and upstream authorization are not proven by this internal path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Per-stimulus exceptions are logged and contained, allowing subsequent attempts to proceed. However, a dependency that remains awaited despite cancellation can stall delivery and asynchronous disposal. Lost events are an explicit delivery tradeoff, so hosts must not assume these triggers alone provide durable enforcement of a security obligation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define bounded admission and an explicit overload policy, with delivery deadlines and backlog visibility. Consider tenant-partitioned capacity if global ordering is unnecessary, preserving required per-tenant ordering and avoiding inline delivery re-entry. Hosts requiring durable security actions should use recoverable delivery or reconciliation rather than relying solely on this volatile queue.

Keep the tenant summary consistent with the new rejection rule.

The detailed section now rejects tenant IDs with leading or trailing whitespace, but the “Decisions at a glance” table still says that any non-empty ID maps to TenantScope.FromTenantId(id) and lists only * and default as rejected. Change the summary to say “any other valid ID” and include whitespace-rejected IDs.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Retain every received operation ID until bookmark replay is no longer possible.

ReceivedKey is capped at 32 IDs, but the documented contract applies to every event received before bookmark creation. After 33 distinct events, the oldest ID is absent from IgnoredKey. Elsa can then deliver that queued stimulus later, and OnEventReceivedAsync calls CompleteActivityAsync instead of recreating the bookmark. The old event can therefore complete a wait that must accept only a subsequent event.

Outside-diff findings from review 5606112909:

  • Tenant summary in the design doc: fixed in 7224ece, being pushed now. The "Decisions at a glance" row now says "any other valid ID" and lists blank and padded IDs as refused, matching the detailed table.
  • Keep every received operation ID instead of the latest 32: not changing. Here is the path I traced.
    • For an old event to complete a new wait, Elsa has to keep that event's stimulus in its bookmark queue. It does that only when no bookmark matched at send time, and the item expires after the queue's time-to-live.
    • The instance also has to have received that same event through another of its triggers, and then 32 further events, all before the new bookmark is created and still within that time-to-live.
    • The module sends events one at a time and each workflow run handles them in order, so that is far-fetched.
    • The cost of removing the cap is real: the ID list lives in the workflow instance's properties. On a long-lived workflow that loops on a trigger, it would grow without bound and be persisted on every save.
    • Raising the cap would only move the heuristic. If this ever shows up in practice, the proper fix is to prune by age against the bookmark queue's time-to-live, not to keep everything.
