Closes #238. Program #58.

Problem

ResourceLifecycleMarkerTransitionService read the current marker, ran the before hooks, then upserted with SaveMarkerAsync. Two concurrent marker writes on one resource both passed the read, for example an archive and a soft-delete, or two policy applications. Both returned Applied, both after-archive hooks saw Succeeded, and the last write won.

That broke the documented lifecycle-marker-conflict contract under concurrency. Hook consumers saw two successful archive points for one marker: the Aster.Elsa trigger could send Resource Archived for a resource that ended up soft-deleted.

Change

  • New store method: IResourceLifecycleMarkerStore.CreateMarkerAsync returns ResourceLifecycleMarkerCreateResult { Created, Marker }. Marker is the marker it wrote, or the one already there. The API is still unshipped, and PublicAPI.Unshipped.txt is updated.
    • In-memory: ConcurrentDictionary.GetOrAdd.
    • SQLite and Postgres: a new RelationalJsonDialect.InsertPayloadIfAbsent, which runs INSERT … ON CONFLICT (tenant_id, resource_id) DO NOTHING.
    • SQL Server: INSERT … SELECT … WHERE NOT EXISTS (… WITH (UPDLOCK, HOLDLOCK)). The range lock makes a second insert wait, then find the first row. It keeps the DATALENGTH comparison used by the existing upsert.
    • Relational, when nothing was inserted: the store reads the existing marker on the same connection. If a concurrent restore cleared it in between, the insert runs again.
  • Service: the transition service uses CreateMarkerAsync. A write that loses the race runs the after-archive hooks with Failed. It then returns what the pre-check would have returned had it run second: AlreadySatisfied for the same state, otherwise Failed with lifecycle-marker-conflict.
  • Unchanged: SaveMarkerAsync stays an upsert, and portability import still uses it.
  • Docs and tests: the core README and the in-repo test doubles are updated.

Tests

  • New file Persistence/LifecycleMarkerRaceStoreTests.cs, with one class per provider (in-memory, SQLite, Postgres, SQL Server):
    • ArchiveAndSoftDeleteRace_OneAppliesAndTheOtherConflicts
    • TwoArchivesRace_OneAppliesAndTheOtherIsAlreadySatisfied
    • CreateMarkerAsync_WritesOnlyWhenTheResourceHasNoMarkerInItsTenant
  • A before-archive hook holds both writers until both arrive, so the race is deterministic, with no sleeps.
  • All 8 race tests fail on main: both writes succeed, and the same-state case gets two Succeeded after-hooks.
  • With the fix, all 12 pass, and they passed in each of five repeated runs.
  • Aster.Tests: 1949/1949 on each of net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0, with Postgres and SQL Server required.
  • Aster.Elsa.Tests: 76/76 on net10.0.

Notes

  • Any third-party implementation of IResourceLifecycleMarkerStore must add CreateMarkerAsync. This is acceptable before 1.0; all in-repo stores and doubles are updated.
  • On SQL Server, the range lock covers one key per write, so contention only arises between writers marking the same resource.

    • Concurrent writes now prevent duplicate markers and return the existing marker when appropriate.
    • Added tenant-scoped marker handling to preserve resource isolation.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Archive and restore operations now correctly handle competing writes and concurrent marker changes.
    • Lifecycle hooks accurately reflect whether an operation succeeded or lost a race.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified concurrency behavior for lifecycle-marker writes and lifecycle hooks.

…#238)

Two concurrent marker writes on one resource both passed the "no marker"
check, both reported Applied and both ran their after-archive hooks as
Succeeded, while the stored marker was whichever upsert landed last.

IResourceLifecycleMarkerStore gains CreateMarkerAsync, an atomic
create-if-absent write that returns the marker written or the one already
there (ResourceLifecycleMarkerCreateResult). In memory it is GetOrAdd; the
relational store inserts with ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING (SQLite, Postgres) or
INSERT ... WHERE NOT EXISTS under UPDLOCK, HOLDLOCK (SQL Server), then reads
the existing marker when nothing was inserted.

The transition service writes through it. A call that loses the race runs
the after-archive hooks with a Failed status and returns what the pre-check
would have returned: AlreadySatisfied for the same state, otherwise Failed
with lifecycle-marker-conflict. SaveMarkerAsync keeps its upsert semantics
for portability import.

📝 Walkthrough

Lifecycle marker stores now support atomic create-if-absent writes. Transition handling reports concurrent writes using the existing marker state and invokes after hooks with the corresponding status. Tests cover in-memory, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server providers.

Changes: Lifecycle marker races

Layer / File(s) Summary
Marker creation contract and in-memory store
src/core/Aster.Core/Abstractions/IResourceLifecycleMarkerStore.cs, src/core/Aster.Core/Models/Instances/ResourceLifecycleMarker.cs, src/core/Aster.Core/InMemory/InMemoryResourceLifecycleMarkerStore.cs, src/core/Aster.Core/PublicAPI.Unshipped.txt
The store interface adds CreateMarkerAsync, which returns a creation status and the stored marker. The in-memory store creates a marker only when no marker exists for that tenant and resource.
Relational insert-if-absent
src/persistence/Relational/RelationalJsonDialect.cs, src/persistence/Aster.Persistence.SqlServerJson/SqlServerJsonDialect.cs, src/persistence/Relational/RelationalJsonResourceStore.cs
Relational dialects add insert-if-absent SQL. The resource store returns an existing marker after a competing insert and retries if a concurrent restore removes it before it can be read.
Transition outcomes and race validation
src/core/Aster.Core/Services/ResourceLifecycleMarkerTransitionService.cs, src/core/Aster.Core/README.md, test/Aster.Tests/Persistence/LifecycleMarkerRaceStoreTests.cs, test/Aster.Tests/Lifecycle/*, test/Aster.Tests/Operational/OperationalHardeningTests.cs
The transition service uses atomic creation and handles same-state and conflicting existing markers. Race tests cover four providers, and the documentation and test stores describe or implement the updated contract.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed mutation decision is scoped to one tenant/resource marker. Its downstream effects include registered lifecycle hooks and archive-triggered workflows. The inspected change preserves the existing addressable tenant/resource set rather than establishing a new remote entrypoint.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — A losing writer invokes after-hooks with Failed rather than Succeeded. The Elsa archive consumer independently requires both Succeeded and Archived before publishing ResourceArchived, preventing a losing archive attempt from producing that successful event through this path.
  • observed — The relational create path binds tenant, resource, and payload as parameters. SQL Server retains identifier validation against trailing-space aliases and a composite tenant/resource primary key, preserving the inspected isolation controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Marker persistence and completion hooks remain separate operations. Cancellation after persistence can interrupt hook completion, and a successful-hook failure can become a diagnostic without undoing the marker. Base comparison shows this failure window predates the PR; atomic creation does not establish transactional or exactly-once hook delivery.

Explanation

The changes meet the coding requirements in [#238]. CreateMarkerAsync provides atomic create-if-absent behavior for in-memory, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server stores. ResourceLifecycleMarkerTransitionService uses it and reports AlreadySatisfied or lifecycle-marker-conflict for race losers. Failed race losers run after hooks with Failed. SaveMarkerAsync remains the upsert path. Provider-specific tests cover the required archive and soft-delete race.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within [#238]. The API update, relational dialect support, documentation, test doubles, and provider-specific tests support the marker creation contract or its concurrency behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.
