Summary

  • add a serialized display-only placeholder channel alongside existing exact reward placeholders
  • use display values for player-visible reward text and item names/lore while preserving raw values for commands, skull owners, and interactive click actions
  • preserve legacy behavior when no display override is supplied

Motivation

VotingPlugin receives vote service identifiers from an external protocol. Those identifiers must remain literal in formatted text without changing their exact value in commands or other action sinks. AdvancedCore previously exposed only one placeholder value for both contexts.

Compatibility and behavior

  • Existing withPlaceHolder behavior is unchanged.
  • Display overrides are optional and survive delayed/offline reward serialization.
  • Player message click/URL/suggest attributes keep exact raw values; visible text receives the display value.
  • Configured PlaceholderAPI, JavaScript, color, and interactive component processing still runs, while substituted display values cannot create or terminate interactive components.
  • Broadcasts retain their previous JavaScript behavior.
  • No new module or artifact is introduced.

Validation

  • Focused reward tests: 164 passed
  • mvn -B -f AdvancedCore/pom.xml clean package: passed
  • Maven XML results: 1,004 tests/checks, 0 failures, 0 errors, 0 skipped
  • Packaged JAR: 6,836,331 bytes
  • SHA-256: e5049274e6652ebe3d76a6a67e19d4c323a9f00753171cb8fcf3b816bf551961
  • git diff --check: passed
  • Fresh independent read-only base-to-head review: No findings

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added separate display placeholders for item names, lore, reward messages, titles, action bars, and boss bars, while preserving ordinary placeholder values for commands and URLs.
    • Added prepared-message and broadcast formatting, including recipient-specific messages and support for line breaks.
    • Added display-placeholder options when configuring rewards.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Reward APIs now support display-only placeholder values while retaining ordinary values for exact actions. Built-in rewards apply the display values to item and message output. Prepared player messages and broadcasts render formatted text before sending it.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3dee6

A display-only value can create an interactive command in a reward message. Prevent display values from changing component structure before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3dee6

A display-only value can be interpreted as part of an interactive message rather than only as visible text. That could create an unintended clickable link or action when an untrusted value is used in a reward message. The risk depends on how callers supply those values and on the configured message.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Display-only values are inserted into message markup before the component parser determines click attributes. If an untrusted value contains markup delimiters, it can supply an unintended click action in a configured reward message.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant scope is reward-message recipients and, for configured broadcasts, online players. An unintended click action requires a suitable interactive template and recipient interaction; production use of attacker-controlled display overrides was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A display value containing component delimiters can enter visible text after template boundaries are chosen. The later parser interprets delimiters and recognizes click attributes, permitting an unintended link or command action. The parser weakness also existed for raw placeholders before this PR; the new concern is the additional, ostensibly display-only input channel. The deferred security candidate remains unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Substitution into visible text precedes player-placeholder processing; generated JavaScript markers have a neutralization path, but the component parser subsequently reads the completed string. Exact template attributes are rendered from raw values.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep substituted display values as literal component text after parsing template structure, or escape them for the component grammar before the completed message is parsed. Check delimiter-bearing values through both player-message and broadcast delivery.

165-189: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

The comment does not identify a defect. The legacy path did parse substituted values, but the new path intentionally protects exact interactive values. The focused test expects this behavior for command, url, and visible text. No caller contract requires raw values to be parsed again.
